During August and September 2012, a study was conducted to determine the sources of PM2.5 adjacent to the I-710 Long Beach Freeway. The site is directly affected by the emissions from heavy diesel traffic flowing from major container ports about 10 km south of the sampling site. Hourly average data were obtained for particulate species including PM2.5, black carbon and UV absorbing carbon, EC, fine particulate nonvolatile and semi-volatile organic material (NVOM and SVOM), sulfate, nitrate, chloride, ammonium ion, and Na ion, and for related factors including O3, CO, NOX, SO2, and total traffic flow on the I-710. A total of 520 hourly averaged data sets with 15 measured variables were analyzed by EPA-PMF v5.0. The data were best described by a 10-factor solution. Based on the composition and diurnal patterns of the factors, they were assigned to three diesel-related factors (two of which appeared to represent traffic from the ports and one general freeway diesel factor), a light-duty, spark-ignition vehicle-related factor, three secondary factors (one of which was associated with O3 formation processes), and three factors dominated by sulfate, SO2, and chloride, respectively. The diurnal patterns for these last three factors are strongly correlated. Meteorological and refinery upset data indicate that they are associated with emissions from a nearby refinery. The results of the PMF analysis were combined with nephelometer light scattering, corrected for coarse particle scattering and estimated aerosol water content in a multilinear regression analysis to identify visibility degradation sources. Major contributors were the aerosol water content, and the secondary PMF factors associated with either Nitrate and NVOM or NVOM and SVOM. The use of hourly average data made possible the identification of factors associated with gasoline vehicle emissions and both port and non-port diesel emissions.Implications: Hourly averaged data were obtained for PM2.5, its components and factors related to primary emissions and the formation of secondary material at a near freeway sampling location adjacent to the I-710 freeway just south of the Long Beach Boulevard entrance and 10 km north of the Ports of Long Beach and Los Angeles. The major objective of the study was to determine the impact of traffic from the ports at the monitoring site. This manuscript reports on the PMF analysis of the data set. Factors related to both diesel traffic originating from the ports and diesel traffic from non-port origins were identified. The diesel traffic originating from the ports was responsible for 9% of the total traffic and 95% of the BC measured at the sampling site. The non-port diesel traffic was responsible for 15% of the total traffic and 5% of the BC. While the Port 1 diesel traffic coming from the ports contributed a large fraction of the BC, this source contributed only 2% of the CO and 5% of the NOX at the sampling site. The impact of these traffic sources on light scattering was also small. Analysis of sources of sulfate and SO2 at the sampling site indicated that these species did not come from port activities of ships at or approaching the port, but rather from upset flare events at a nearby oil refinery.

Visibility impairment, particularly at the iconic southwestern U.S. national parks, was an early and persistent concern that helped motivate parts of the Clean Air Act (CAA) and its 1977 and 1990 amendments. Grand Canyon National Park (GCNP), Arizona, in particular, was the site of many early air quality studies that found that before 1990 particulate sulfate was the largest contributor to light extinction at GCNP. Since a peak in the 1960s, sulfate concentrations at GCNP have declined dramatically as sulfur dioxide (SO2) emissions in the southwestern United States and northern Mexico have been reduced, often due to successful regulations. The relative importance of upwind source regions has also changed. During the 1960s and 1970s the predominant SO2 emitters were copper smelters in Arizona and surrounding states. As smelter emissions declined, in the 1980s and 1990s electric generating units (EGUs) became the largest upwind SO2 sources. More recently, EGU emissions have also been reduced, especially since about 2000. Three back trajectory methods are used to examine the sulfate concentrations at GCNP as a function of upwind source regions. 1) Residence time analysis shows that Arizona, southern California, southern Utah, and northern Mexico are most often upwind of GCNP. There were highly significant reductions in mean sulfate concentrations at GCNP when air arrived after transport through most source regions. 2) Concentration trends by source region show that the maximum rates of decline for 1980–2018 were about −2%/year when there was transport through Colorado and the Navajo Generating Station (NGS) source regions. 3) The Trajectory Mass Balance (TrMB) model was used to apportion sulfate seasonally for 3-year rolling averages during 1981–2017. As expected, relative source attributions have evolved through time. Largest mean contributors in summer are northern Mexico (25–70%), Baja (0–25%), Arizona smelters (0–35%), the Mohave Generating Station (

Few electricity generating stations received more environmental scrutiny during the last quarter of the twentieth century than did the Mohave Power Project (MPP), a coal-fired facility near Grand Canyon National Park. Terhorst and Berkman (2010) examine regional aerosol monitoring data collected before and after the plant’s 2006 retirement for retrospective evidence of MPP’s impact on visibility in the Park. The authors’ technical analysis is thoughtfully conceived and executed, but is misleadingly presented as discrediting previous studies and their interpretation by regulators. In reality the Terhorst–Berkman analysis validates a consensus on MPP’s visibility impact that was established years before its closure, in a collaborative assessment undertaken jointly by Federal regulators and MPP’s owners.

Positive matrix factorization (PMF2) was used to elucidate sources of fine particulate material (PM2.5) for a study conducted during July and August 2005, in Riverside, CA. One-hour averaged semi-continuous measurements were made with a suite of instruments to provide PM2.5 mass and chemical composition data. Total PM2.5 mass concentrations (non-volatile plus semi-volatile) were measured with an R&P filter dynamic measurement system (FDMS TEOM) and a conventional TEOM monitor was used to measure non-volatile mass concentrations. PM2.5 chemical species monitors included a dual-oven Sunset monitor to measure both non-volatile and semi-volatile carbonaceous material, an ion chromatographic-based monitor to measure sulfate and nitrate and an Anderson Aethalometer to measure black carbon (BC). Gas phase data including CO, NO2, NOx and O3 were also collected during the sampling period. In addition, single-particle measurements were made using aerosol time-of-flight mass spectrometry (ATOFMS). Twenty different single-particle types consistent with those observed in previous ATOFMS studies in Riverside were identified for the PMF2 analysis. Finally, time-of-flight aerosol mass spectrometry (ToF-AMS) provided data on markers of primary and secondary organic aerosol. Two distinct PMF2 analyses were performed. In analysis 1, all the data except for the ATOFMS and ToF-AMS data were used in an initial evaluation of sources at Riverside during the study. PMF2 was able to identify six factors from the data set corresponding to both primary and secondary sources, primarily from automobile emissions, diesel emissions, secondary nitrate formation, a secondary photochemical associated source, organic emissions and Basin transported pollutants. In analysis 2, the ATOFMS and ToF-AMS data were included in the analysis. In the second analysis, PMF2 was able to identify 16 factors with a variety of both primary and secondary factors being identified, corresponding to both primary and secondary material from both anthropogenic and natural sources. Based on relationships with Basin meteorology, the PMF identified source profiles and diurnal patterns in the source concentrations, sources were identified as being of local origin or resulting from transport of pollutants across the Basin due to onshore flow. Good agreement was observed between the PMF2 predicted mass and the FDMS measured mass for both analyses.

The concentration of fine particulate nitrate, sulfate, and carbonaceous material was measured for 12-hr day-night samples using diffusion denuder samplers during the Project Measurement of Haze and Visibility Effects (MOHAVE) July to August 1992 Summer Intensive study at Meadview, AZ, just west of Grand Canyon National Park. Organic material was measured by several techniques. Only the diffusion denuder method measured the semivolatile organic material. Fine particulate sulfate and nitrate (using denuder technology) determined by various groups agreed. Based on the various collocated measurements obtained during the Project MOHAVE study, the precision of the major fine particulate species was +/- 0.6 microg/m3 organic material, +/- 0.3 microg/m3 ammonium sulfate, and +/- 0.07 microg/m3 ammonium nitrate. Data were also available on fine particulate crustal material, fine and coarse particulate mass from the Interagency Monitoring of Protected Visual Environments sampling system, and relative humidity (RH), light absorption, particle scattering, and light extinction measurements from Project MOHAVE. An extinction budget was obtained using mass scattering coefficients estimated from particle size distribution data. Literature data were used to estimate the change in the mass scattering coefficients for the measured species as a function of RH and for the absorption of light by elemental carbon. Fine particulate organic material was the principal particulate contributor to light extinction during the study period, with fine particulate sulfate as the second most important contributor. During periods of highest light extinction, contributions from fine particulate organic material, sulfate, and light-absorbing carbon dominated the extinction of light by particles. Particle light extinction was dominated by sulfate and organic material during periods of lowest light extinction. Combination of the extinction data and chemical mass balance analysis of sulfur oxides sources in the region indicate that the major anthropogenic contributors to light extinction were from the Los Angeles, CA, and Las Vegas, NV, urban areas. Mohave Power Project associated secondary sulfate was a negligible contributor to light extinction.

Grand Canyon National Park (GCNP) is a mandatory Class I federal area that is afforded visibility protection under the Federal Clean Air Act. In this paper, we have examined the effects on visibility and particulate sulfur (Sp) at GCNP as a result of reducing sulfur dioxide (SO2) emissions by 90% from the Navajo Generating Station (NGS). Scrubbers were retrofitted to each of the three units at NGS during 1997, 1998, and 1999. The Inter-agency Monitoring of Protected Visual Environments aerosol network database affords us an opportunity to examine trends in Sp and extinction both prescrubber and postscrubber. The NGS impacts GCNP primarily during the winter (December to February). During winter, at times, there are fogs, stratus, and high-relative humidity in the Grand Canyon. When the NGS plume interacts with these fogs and stratus, rapid conversion of SO2 to Sp can occur. A variety of analytical techniques were used, including cumulative frequency plots of Sp and extinction, and chemical mass balance and tracer source apportionment analysis. We also deployed P value statistical analysis of "extreme" Sp values. Before scrubbers were installed, values of Sp approaching 2 microg/m3 were occasionally observed. Because scrubbers have been installed, high levels of Sp have been markedly reduced. Statistical P value analysis suggests that these reductions were significant. Furthermore, we have also observed that Sp has been reduced throughout the cumulative frequency curve during winter by approximately 33% since scrubbers were installed. By contrast, during summer when the NGS impact on the Canyon is minimal, there has been only a relatively small decrease in Sp.

The Nested Grid Model (NGM) is a primitive-equation meteorological model that is routinely exercised over North America for forecasting purposes by the National Meteorological Center. While prognostic meteorological models are being increasingly used to drive air quality models, their use in conducting annual simulations requires significant resources. NGM estimates of wind fields and other meteorological variables provide an attractive alternative since they are typically archived and readily available for an entire year. Preliminary evaluation of NGM winds during the summer of 1992 for application to the region surrounding the Grand Canyon National Park showed serious shortcomings. The NGM winds along the borders between California, Arizona and Mexico tend to be northwesterly with a speed of about 6 m/sec, while the observed flow is predominantly southerly at about 2-5 m/sec. The mesoscale effect of a thermal low pressure area over the highly heated Southern California and western Arizona deserts does not appear to be represented by the NGM because of its coarse resolution and the use of sparse observations in that region. Tracer simulations and statistical evaluation against special high resolution observations of winds in the southwest United States clearly demonstrate the northwest bias in NGM winds and its adverse effect on predictions of an air quality model. The "enhanced" NGM winds, in which selected wind observations are incorporated in the NGM winds using a diagnostic meteorological model provide additional confirmation on the primary cause of the northwest bias. This study has demonstrated that in situations where limited resources prevent the use of prognostic meteorological models, previously archived coarse resolution wind fields in which additional observations are incorporated to correct known biases provide an attractive option.

The Grand Canyon Visibility Transport Commission (GCVTC) was established by the U.S. Congress to assess the potential impacts of projected growth on atmospheric visibility at Grand Canyon National Park and to make recommendations to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency on what measures could be taken to avoid such adverse impacts. A critical input to the assessment tool used by the commission was three-dimensional model-derived wind fields used to transport the emissions. This paper describes the evaluation of the wind fields used at various stages in the assessment. Wind fields evaluated included those obtained from the Colorado State University Regional Atmospheric Modeling System (RAMS), the National Meteorological Center's Nested Grid Model (NGM), and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Atmospheric Transport and Dispersion (ATAD) trajectory model. The model-derived wind fields were evaluated at multiple vertical levels at several locations in the southwestern United States by determining differences between model predicted winds and winds that were measured using radiosonde and radar wind profiler data. Model-derived winds were also evaluated by determining the percent of time that they were within acceptable differences from measured winds. All models had difficulties, generally meeting the acceptable criteria for less than 50% of the predictions. The RAMS model had a persistent bias toward southwesterly winds at the expense of other directions, especially failing to represent channeling by north-south mountain ranges in the lower levels. The NGM model exhibited a substantial bias in the summer months by extending northwesterly winds in the eastern Pacific Ocean well inland, in contrast to the observed southwesterlies at inland locations. The simpler ATAD trajectory model performed somewhat better than the other models, probably because of its use of more upper air sites. The results of the evaluation indicated that these wind fields could not be used to reliably predict source-receptor impacts on a particular day; thus, seasonally averaged impacts were used in the GCVTC assessment.

Perfluorocarbon tracers were released continuously from several surface locations and one power plant stack location during the winter (30 days) and summer (50 days) intensive studies as part of Project MOHAVE. Tracers were released in winter from the Mohave Power Plant (MPP) and Dangling Rope, UT, located on the shore of Lake Powell near Page, AZ; and in summer from MPP, the Tehachapi Pass between the Mojave Desert and the Central Valley in California, and El Centro, CA, on the California-Mexico border. At the Tehachapi tracer release site six-hour pulses of a separately identifiable perfluorocarbon tracer were released every four days in order to assess the time for the tracer to clear the monitoring network. Daily 24-hr integrated samples were collected at about 30 sites in four states. Limited tracer concentration data with higher time resolution is also available. Graphical displays and analyses identify several regional transport paths, including a convergence zone in the Mojave Desert, the importance of terrain channeling, especially in winter, and a relationship between 24-hr maximum influence function and distance that may prove useful as a scoping tool and to test regional scale air quality models. In winter, Dangling Rope tracer was routinely transported through the entire length of the Grand Canyon, while in summer, MPP tracer was routinely transported over most of Lake Mead.

Windblown fugitive dust contributes to violations of air quality standards for particulate matter

Nursery-grown, native plant species have potential application for revegetating disturbed arid and semiarid lands. We evaluated nursery-grown fourwing saltbush [Atriplex canescens (Pursh) Nutt.], allscale saltbush IA. polycarpa (Torrey) S. Watson], bladderpod (Isomeris arborea Nutt.). honey mesquite [Prosopis glandulosa Torrey var. torreyana (L. Benson) M. Johnston]. and rubber rabbitbrush Chrysothamnus nauseosus (Pallas) Britton transplanted to abandoned agricultural land throughout the western Mojave I)esert. Two types of temporary plant enclosure for herbivory and environmental protection (plastic cones and wire cages) and three mulch treatments (straw. bark, and none) were tested at all six sites. Rubber rabbitbrush was difficult to propagate in the nursery and is not recommended for transplanting. Significant differences in plant performance occurred between sites with similar aerial environments but contrasting degrees of edaphic disturbance. Plastic cones were significantly superior to wire cages for plant vigor and survival but no differences were detected between mulch treatments. Fourwing salthush was generally successful over all treatments and sites and is recommended for transplanting in this area. In a larger plot study, narrow augered holes led to superior survival of honey mesquite relative to wide, hand-dug holes, and plastic cones were superior to wire cages. Mortality of all species was high due to dry, but not atypical, weather during the 2 yr of the study. We conclude that transplanting without intensive irrigation does not guarantee survival of even the most successful species. Its greater cost relative to direct seeding may not be warranted for large-scale restoration of arid and semiarid environments.

The Mohave Power Project (MPP) is an isolated 1580-MW coal-fired electric generating plant located in Laughlin, NV. Laughlin is a small desert gambling town situated in the lower Colorado River Valley near the junction of three states: Nevada, California, and Arizona. The location of the MPP is approximately 115 km southwest of the western end of the Grand Canyon National Park and about 240 km southwest from the Grand Canyon Village. This paper describes the summer transport patterns of the MPP emittants using illustrated examples from the Project MOHAVE (Measurements of Haze and Visual Effects) 1992 summer intensive study. The intensive study lasted 50 days from mid-July through August and encompassed the major meteorological patterns associated with southwestern U.S. summer meteorology. The MPP emittants were transported toward the Grand Canyon (north to the northeast) during more than 80% of the total hours. Airflow was from the south most of the time due to a combination of the semi-permanent thermal low, differential heating between the Gulf of California and lower Colorado River Valley, and upslope heating of the southern and western slopes of the nearby Colorado Plateau.

Total fluoride (gas plus fine particle), spherical aluminosilicate particles, particulate selenium, arsenic, lead, bromine, and absorption of light by fine particles have been used to characterize chemical profiles for sources of sulfur oxides impacting the Grand Canyon National Park Class I Visibility Region. During the Project MOHAVE (Measurement of Haze and Visual Effects) winter and summer intensive studies in 1992, these various species were determined at seven sampling sites in and around the Grand Canyon. Extensive upper air and surface-based meteorological measurements were examined to determine probable geographical origins of the air mass present during a given sampling period for each sampling site. Samples corresponding to air masses dominated by transport from a single major source region were used to determine a source profile for each region. Source regions which have been characterized by this analysis include the San Joaquin Valley area, the southern California coastal urban area, the Baja, California-Imperial Valley area, the Arizona and Mexico area (including major smelters) south of the Grand Canyon, the area southeast of the Grand Canyon, the Colorado Plateau area, the Wasatch Front in Utah, and the area in Nevada to the west and northwest of the Grand Canyon. Source profiles giving the ratio of each endemic marker to SO x for each identified regional source in these areas have been determined. The source profiles for the various regional sources are all statistically different and distinguishable from those for other geographically adjoining sources.

Correct assessment of the factors associated with visibility impairment is dependent on accurate determination of the chemical composition as a function of size of particles present in the atmosphere. Collection of particles on a filter results in underestimation of particulate organic compounds due to losses from the semi-volatile organic fraction during sample collection, i.e. a “negative sampling artifact”. These semi-volatile organic compounds lost from particles collected on a filter can be correctly measured using a diffusion denuder sampling system. This paper describes a multi-system, multi-channel, high-volume diffusion denuder sampler for the accurate determination of the particle size distribution and chemical composition of semi-volatile organic compounds in atmospheric fine particles. Data obtained in Provo, UT and Los Angeles, CA on the chemical composition and particle size distribution of semi-volatile organic compounds in atmospheric fine particles indicate that the majority of the semi-volatile organic compounds lost from particles during sampling were present in particles in the 0.4–0.8 μm size range in the atmospheres sampled. Organic compounds lost from the particles during sampling include paraffinic compounds, aromatic compounds and organic acids and esters.

Intensive monitoring studies of aerosol have been conducted in two regions of California with poor air quality. Winter monitoring in the Fresno area was conducted in December 2003. Two summer samplings were collected from the eastern Los Angeles Basin, from Rubidoux in 2003 and Riverside in 2005. All three of these studies featured a suite of semicontinuous aerosol monitors. The speciated aerosol data with continuous gaseous measurements from these studies were combined with continuous Automated Surface Observing System (ASOS) measurements of visibility and extinction from nearby airports and modeled aerosol water content to conduct source apportionment analyses. The data were analyzed using three different techniques. A conventional positive matrix factorization (PMF) method was used. Then a novel approach was used that coupled PMF with added extinction and modeled water data. Another technique involved integrating conventional PMF with linear regression to obtain the extinction associated with each source. The novel PMF with added extinction and modeled water data provided the most robust results. The Fresno winter study was meteorologically characterized by stagnant conditions, a shallow mixing height, and intermittent periods of fog and low clouds. Six factors were identified using PMF. The secondary nitrate and gasoline mobile combustion emission associated sources exhibited the highest extinction coefficients. PMF also identified six factors in the summer 2003 study at Rubidoux. The secondary nitrate and the ozone-related secondary semi-volatile organic material (SVOM) sources exhibited the highest extinction levels. Water associated with the aerosols plays an important role because of the marine influence and stratus clouds typically occurring in the basin during the summer months. The summer of 2005 study in Riverside lead to the identification of 11 sources. The highest contributors to extinction are associated with material transported across the basin, the relative humidity secondary source, followed by secondary nitrate.

An Aerosol Trajectory Model (ATM) is applied to the South Coast Air Basin of California for a two-day episode in August 1982 to evaluate proposed control strategies that aim to reduce atmospheric aerosols. Model predictions indicate that secondary organic aerosols decrease linearly with reactive hydrocarbon emissions. In addition, the model shows that if sulfate is produced only in the gas phase by oxidation of SO{sub 2}, then reduction in SO{sub 2} emissions yields a nearly proportional decrease in sulfate levels. Reduction in ammonia emissions, combined with reduction of NO{sub x} emissions, gives the best results in terms of nitrate control. The order in which the emission controls are implemented is predicted to have a major impact on the reduction of secondary atmospheric aerosols.

Project MOHAVE (Measurements of Haze and Visual Effects) encompassed a 1-yr field study in the southwestern United States from September 1991 through August 1992. The congressionally mandated study was a joint partnership between the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Southern California Edison, and the National Park Service. A major objective of this study was to quantify the potential haze impacts on the nearby Grand Canyon National Park from the 1580 MW coal-fired MOHAVE Power Project (MPP). Any regional impacts from MPP were from secondary fine sulfate. In this paper, we explore the temporal and spatial patterns of particulate sulfur (Sp) and "organic mass by hydrogen" (OMH) during the summer intensive, conducted from mid-July through the end of August 1992. Using an innovative hierarchical pattern recognition classification scheme, we developed 6 groups of Sp and 8 groups of OMH temporally similar behaving patterns in the sampling region. From a regional understanding of synoptic meteorology, these Sp patterns were explainable. We observed two regional gradients. One gradient was a west-to-east decreasing gradient, most likely the result of major sources from urban southern California, including the San Joaquin Valley. The other decreasing gradient was from south-to-north, perhaps the result of emissions emanating from the large urban centers in northern Mexico. The patterns for OMH were not as regionally homogeneous as the patterns for Sp. A west-to-east decreasing gradient was observed for OMH, along with reduced values in the lower Colorado River Valley and some higher values in central and eastern Arizona. The west-to-east decreasing gradient suggests the presence of the Los Angeles urban plume, while the higher values in central and eastern Arizona may be due to biogenic emissions and increased seasonal fires.

Receptor-based chemical mass balance (CMB) analysis techniques are designed to apportion species that are conserved during pollutant transport using conserved source profiles. The techniques will fail if non-conservative species (or profiles) are not properly accounted for in the CMB model. The straightforward application of the CMB model developed for Project MOHAVE using regional profiles resulted in a significant under-prediction of total sulfate oxides (SOx, SO2 plus fine particulate sulfate) for many samples at Meadview, AZ. In addition, for these samples the concentration of the inert tracer emitted from the MOHAVE Power Project (MPP), ocPDCH, was also under-predicted. A second-generation model has been developed which assumes that separation of particles and SO2 can occur in the MPP plume during nighttime stable plume conditions. This second-generation CMB model accounts for all SOx present at the various receptor sites. In addition, the concentrations of ocPDCH and the presence of other inert tracers of emission from regional sources are accurately predicted. The major source of SOx at Meadview was the MPP, but the major source of sulfate at this site was the Las Vegas urban area. At Hopi Point in the Grand Canyon, the Baja California region (Imperial Valley and northwestern Mexico) was the major source of both SOx and sulfate.

Accurately predicting the rise of a buoyant exhaust plume is difficult when there are large vertical variations in atmospheric stability or wind velocity. Such conditions are particularly common near shoreline power plants. Simple plume rise formulas, which employ only a mean temperature gradient and a mean wind speed, cannot be expected to adequately treat an atmosphere whose lapse rate and wind velocity vary markedly with height. This paper tests the accuracy of a plume rise model which is capable of treating complex atmospheric structure because it integrates along the plume trajectory. The model consists of a set of ordinary differential equations, derived from the fluid equations of motion, with an entrainment parameterization to specify the mixing of ambient air into the plume. Comparing model predictions of final plume rise to field observations yields a root mean square difference of 24 m, which is 9% of the average plume rise of 267 m. These predictions are more accurate than predictions given by three simpler models which utilize variants of a standard plume rise formula, the most accurate of the simpler models having a 12% error.

Several diffusion denuder-filter-sorbent bed and filter-sorbent bed sampling systems with varying selectivity for the collection of different classes of organic compounds have been used for the collection and determination of atmospheric organic material present at Hopi Point in the Grand Canyon. The data show that the amount of semivolatile organic compounds in particles in the atmosphere in the Southwest United States has been underestimated by sampling with only a filter. The collection of gas-phase organic compounds by the filter causes a small positive artifact. However, a much larger, negative error results from the loss of 40%–80% of the organic material in the particles collected by the filter. The concentration of organic particulate matter present at the Hopi Point site is probably about 2 μg/m3 larger than inferred from previous data.

The design, evaluation and field testing of two devices (called decelerators) for reducing the velocities with respect to an aircraft of airborne cloud and precipitation particles are described. With the aid of these decelerators delicate ice crystals in excess of 1 mm in size can be collected without breakage from aircraft flying at 50 m sec−1, and somewhat smaller ice crystals can be collected intact at aircraft speeds up to 100 m sec−1.
