Dr David Dymond is a Vice President of the British Association for Local History and of the Suffolk Institute of Archaeology and History, President of the Suffolk Records Society, and an honorary fellow of the University of East Anglia. The author of several valued books about the practice of local history, his contribution to the study of local history generally, and in his adopted county of Suffolk in particular, has been immensely influential. The essays in this Festschrift are offered as a token of esteem and affection by colleagues, friends, and students of David. They consist of new research on aspects of local history from the medieval period to the twentieth century, with a particular focus on Eastern England. Taken together, they illustrate David's philosophy of local history (that it should be ‘wide ranging, inclusive, integrating, and interdisciplinary'). These essays, in turn, aim to reflect the values that have always characterised David's approach: a focus on primary sources meticulously interrogated and a concern to avoid the pitfalls of parochialism by remaining sensitive to the wider influences upon communities. The very varied contributions to this collection aptly reflect the breadth and depth of David Dymond's own scholarship whilst offering a rich choice of material to anyone with an interest in local history.

With the time available to surgeons-in-training ever dwindling, there is great emphasis placed on practical learning tools. In most medical schools, most emphasis is placed on orthopaedic trauma surgery, with elective techniques often delayed until much later in a surgeon's training.

A very useful analysis of the political debates of the times. ANCESTORS [for volume I]This second volume of BHRS`s series of late seventeenth and early eighteenth century poll books continues the story of Bedfordshire voting in the context of local and national politics up to the election in 1734. It contains transcriptions of the poll books for four Bedford borough elections and three county elections held between 1722 and 1734. Except for the 1722 county election, the poll books are taken from hitherto unpublished manuscripts.Much of the political and local background to voting is recounted in volume 1. For this volume, each chapter has an introduction which draws upon letters to provide an insight into the political alliances and manoeuvres which occurred in selecting candidates, including the part played by the Duchess of Marlborough.The poll books themselves are a mine of local information about Bedfordshire. The 10,000 names in this volume (fully indexed), added to the 8,500 names in the first volume, provide evidence for in-depth study of people, places and landholding in Bedfordshire. They will also help family historians find ancestors between the 1671 Hearth Tax and the 1841 Census.

This book brings together a variety of primary sources that inform the reader about the colony's earliest European inhabitants and the sparsely populated and fragile communities in which they lived, resulting in the most comprehensive collection of annotated biographical sketches yet published. From the earliest records relating to Virginia, we learn the basics about many of these original colonists: their origins, the names of the ships they sailed on, the names of the'hundreds'and'plantations'they inhabited, the names of their spouses and children, their occupations and their position in the colony, their relationships with fellow colonists and Indian neighbors, their living conditions as far as can be ascertained from documentary sources, their ownership of land, the dates and circumstances of their death, and a host of fascinating, sometimes incidental details about their personal lives, all gathered together in the handy format of a biographical dictionary. Maps provided here identify the sites at which Virginia's earliest plantations were located and enable genealogists and students of colonial history to link most of the more than 5,500 people included in this volume to the cultural landscape.

This is the most famous of all ships'passenger lists and historically the most important single-volume list of English-speaking immigrants of the colonial period ever published. Transcribed from the records of the British State Paper Office, it contains the names of over 11,000 immigrants with their ages, former places of residence, and the names of ships in which they embarked. The use of the book is greatly enhanced by a sixty-six page index, giving the Christian as well as the family name of all immigrants cited in various lists throughout the work.

The third volume in BHRS's series of poll books and covers the years from the fall of Walpole to the rise of William Pitt the younger.This is the first volume of BHRS's series of late seventeenth and early eighteenth century poll books. Poll books tell the story of local people and their link with national history. This book is the first in a series by BHRS containing transcripts of the poll books for the county and borough seats of Bedford, and also includes some election accounts showing candidates'expenditure.The introductory commentary gives an insight into political influences in Bedfordshire during the seminal period of English history from the Glorious Revolution to the accession of George I. It enables comparisons and political trends to be detected, including allegiances of regions of the county and parishes, the survival of the Tory party, the political allegiance of Anglican clergy and the role of Protestant nonconformists. Major landowners were important in Bedfordshire politics, but not dominant, and local gentry played a crucial role.The transcriptions list all those who voted in four county and one borough election. The 8,500 names, fully indexed, will give unparalleled information on local landholding and help family historians find ancestors between the 1671 Hearth Tax and the 1841 Census.

A collection of some of the earliest documents of colonial Virginia, this book includes a 1623 census of the inhabitants of the colony arranged according to their place of residence and a list of persons who died in Virginia between April 1622 and February 1623. Altogether, nearly 2,000 of the earliest inhabitants of Virginia are identified.

This work is an exhaustive study of 160 families. For each family covered, a skeletal genealogy is given, showing births, marriages, and deaths in successive generations of the 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries. This is then followed by a narrative detailing the known facts about each person and family according to existing records. The narratives commence with the first member of the family to come to New England, identifying his place of origin and occupation, the date and place of his arrival in New England, and his residence--all information that was accumulated from the author's extensive research in wills, inventories, deeds, land records, and church records. The narratives then turn to the children of the original settler, treating them in like manner, and to their children, and so on until the genealogy is fully developed.

This is a heroic attempt to bring together from English sources a complete list of immigrants to the New World from 1607 to 1660. No doubt records of passengers leaving for America were kept in this period, but while no systematic record has survived, the remaining records are substantial. Some were collected and published by John Camden Hotten over 100 years ago, and they were the passenger lists he found in the British State Papers. Since then a great many sources have been found and the time has been long overdue for these facts to be assembled in one comprehensive book. Hence the publication of this work by the English scholar Peter Wilson Coldham, the leading authority on early English emigration records.

Taking as its subject the first fifty years of the eighteenth century and following the arrangement of the two earlier works in this distinguished series, the third volume of'The Complete Book of Emigrants'provides a comprehensive list of emigrants from surviving records in English archives. The records used in this volume, in addition to the usual spread of sources, derive principally from (1) Plantation Apprenticeship Bindings; (2) Port Books; and (3) Convict Pardons on Condition of Transportation. Again, as with the other volumes, there are indexes of names and ships. Altogether some 25,000 emigrants are identified, bringing the total names in the three volumes to over 75,000.
