Purpose Product development process (PDP) in the context of Industry 4.0 may present several marketing implications. To understand these implications, the purpose of this study is to identify the benefits and difficulties of Industry 4.0 related to the PDP and its impact in marketing strategies and operations. Design/methodology/approach The methodology used to perform this research was a systematic literature review. For this, five steps were followed, namely, research question formulation; studies location; studies selection and evaluation; analysis and synthesis; and reporting and use research results. Findings The systematic literature review considering PDP in Industry 4.0 context resulted in 28 benefits and 14 difficulties, in a total of 53 articles. From the analysis of these benefits and difficulties, several implications for marketing were identified, namely, better understand customer preferences; greater agility in marketing decision-making; better align marketing, product development and operations processes issues; better understand product/service lifecycle; analyze possibilities of new ways of distribution and communication channels; better define the value of products and services and location requirements. Originality/value The findings presented here can be used both by market professionals, interested in the subject and by researchers for future studies. The better understanding of PDP in the context of Industry 4.0 can enhance marketing strategies for market professionals and provide insights for researchers. No similar studies were found in the literature.

The textile industry is an important sector of the Brazilian economy, being considered the fifth largest textile industry in the world. To support further growth and development in this sector, this document proposes a process for production analysis through the use of Discrete Event Simulation (DES) and optimization through genetic algorithms. The focus is on production planning for weaving processes and optimization to help make decisions about batch sizing and production scheduling activities. In addition, the correlations between some current technological trends and their implications for the textile industry are also highlighted. Another important contribution of this study is to detail the use of the commercial software Tecnomatix Plant Simulation 13®, to simulate and optimize a production problem by applying genetic algorithms with real production data.

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic is challenging companies worldwide and undergraduate courses need to consider this context within their disciplines, especially regarding human factors and ergonomics. For this, professors should plan how to insert this knowledge into the program content of their discipline. OBJECTIVE: This commentary aims to present how this insertion will be conducted in the second academic semester of 2020 in the discipline “Productive Systems” of the mechanical engineering undergraduate course offered by a Brazilian university. METHODS: This commentary is based on the authors’ points of view and experiences. However, the presented discussion is based on institutional websites and international articles. RESULTS: It is possible to verify that human factors and ergonomic aspects related to the pandemic can be debated in several topics of the analyzed discipline. CONCLUSIONS: Besides presenting the planning of inserting these aspects, this commentary expands the debates on the subject.

Goal: The purpose of this paper is to present a proposal of steps for the implementation of Industry 4.0 in the industrial context, considering management and operational aspects. The reason is to discuss that technological change is accompanied by many organizational implications, in which it is perceivable that some companies already experience strategic and operational turbulence due to the lack of understanding of the this structure’s complexity. Design / Methodology / Approach: This study assumes an exploratory character because the subject of analysis is still in the knowledge-structuring phase. In this sense, data was collected from the literature review. Results: A theoretical proposal for the Industry 4.0 implementation framework is presented in flow format. It is organized in steps that cover the strategic and operational aspects during the implementation flow. Limitations of the investigation: The limitations of this study are directly related to its theoretical nature and the difficulty of finding tools that help in the execution of each proposed stage. Practical implications: However, based on theoretical insights, a trajectory of a transformation model is proposed, thus this research intends to show clearly and direct how companies can introduce the aspects of Industry 4.0 to their own benefit. Originality / Value: In this study, a conceptual model is structured, and it indicates a potential of application because it contributes to support and encourage the adoption of technologies and concepts indicated in the Industry 4.0 literature in a structured way.

The main objective of this exploratory research was to develop and validate a model to measure the maturity of manufacturing cells that operate according to the lean philosophy. A theoretical model was constructed based on parameters from the literature and information provided by a panel of experts. Using a questionnaire based on this theoretical model, a survey of 101 cell managers was carried out and the data collected were analyzed by partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM). The results show that the maturity of a manufacturing cell can be measured using the three constructs ‘Employee Knowledge and Skills’, ‘Quality and Continuous Improvement’ and ‘Cell Configuration’. Of these, the second had the greatest impact on cell maturity. The results also show that a fourth construct, ‘Leadership, Autonomy and Communication’, influences maturity indirectly. These findings may be used by managers of manufacturing cells and by researchers.

Recently the technological evolution resulting from the fourth industrial revolution, especially with the advancement of the internet of things and bigdata, coupled with the change in consumer behavior, are forcing companies to improve the efficiency of production systems. Now, companies must mass produce to keep costs low, but they must also be flexible and offer a wide variety of products. Thus, companies are increasingly using computational tools to improve decision making, especially with the application of simulation and digitization of production systems. However, online data collection is presenting itself as a solution to decrease the time for the development of simulation models and, thus, speed up decision making. In this way, this work shows the steps required for online data exchange between a real system and a virtual production system. For this, a prototype will be used that demonstrates these basic concepts.

The transformation of companies into organizations that respect environmental limits while meeting social needs and desires has become a platform for innovation and strategy for product development. In this context the development of products has become a key process to increase the competitiveness of the company. However, there is still a lack of clarity in the way in which sustainability tools or approaches should be incorporated within this process, generating uncertainties in their adoption. To analyze this incorporation, this work uses methodological procedures such as a bibliographic review and the application of surveys of industry professionals working in product development and sustainability. The main objective is to analyze the degree of incorporation of tools and concepts of sustainability in the product development process of companies in different industrial sectors located in Brazil, with the intention of discovering what can be the approximation of the conceptual developments in the academic world and the practical applications in industry.

Cleaner production is a fast-growing area with numerous important developments seen over the years, which have led to substantial improvements, both in technological, process and organization terms. Yet there is a paucity of literature organizing the body of knowledge on the benefits and difficulties seen in this field. Thus, following a systematic literature review protocol, this paper provides a ten-year state-of-the-art analysis on the benefits and difficulties faced in the implementation of cleaner production strategies, and outlines some means via which they may be addressed. Main results point out that companies and governments have been able to successfully reap both tangible and intangible benefits after Cleaner Production implementation as its appeal to attract customers and reap reputation gain increases, for example. However, the results also show a series of difficulties that remain and hinders the widespread advancement of this methodology.

The concept of corporate social responsibility (CSR) is associated with the idea that every organization should integrate environmental, economic and social issues as part of their organizational philosophy. In companies with a higher degree of development in terms of CSR, sustainable practices are integrated into management systems. When focusing on Latin America, this integration may be at its first steps, but there is a vacuum in the literature in this field. Based on this reality, this paper aims to evaluate the integration between CSR practices and management systems in companies in Brazil based on experts’ perceptions. Employing a conceptual model covering how stakeholder demands are incorporated in organizational practices using a continuous improvement approach, we performed a survey with experts in the area. Results revealed opportunities for improvements in all CSR practices evaluated, most of which were considered by the experts to have been implemented only superficially. In a comparative analysis, two practices stood out in relation to the others: reporting of CSR results to stakeholders and evaluation of the performance of CSR activities using pre-established indicators. Practices associated with planning of CSR activities are the most superficially implemented, adversely affecting CSR performance. The authors believe that the findings of this study could be useful for business managers and academics as guidance towards improved CSR efforts.

In 2016, the Brazilian pet industry had revenue of R$ 18.9 billion and ranked third place worldwide. Thus, it is a sector that is always looking for enhancements in its productivity levels. Based on the previous statements, a case study was conducted in a selected company of the pet care business, with the goal to augment its monthly revenue, identify the bottleneck that impedes reaching this goal, and proposed solutions to bring the production and loading fluxes of merchandise to its optimal state, making the company’s revenue also optimal. The classical tools of the theory of constraints were used in this analysis. The first step was to obtain the undesirable effects of the process to define the bottleneck. After that, some injections were proposed as solutions to eliminate the undesirable effects and bring the production and loading model of the company to its full state. Finally, by means of a computational tool, the current situation of the company (with the bottleneck), and the situation in a virtual state (without the bottleneck) were simulated and compared, showing the potential of the found solution.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to analyze the difficulties observed during implementation of quality management systems (QMSs) in Brazilian manufacturing companies. Design/methodology/approach The methodological strategy used was a literature review, a panel of experts and a survey. Through the literature review, 15 difficulties associated with the implementation of QMS were raised; these were organized into latent variables by specialists in the subject and served as the basis for a survey. In total, 123 professionals working with quality management in manufacturing companies participated in the research and the data collected were analyzed by means of second-order confirmatory factorial analysis. Findings The results allowed the validation of the 15 difficulties observed in the literature, and it was evidenced that these difficulties are structured in four latent variables as follows: difficulties associated with employees; difficulties associated with QMS structuration; difficulties associated with integration; and difficulties resulting from the planning. Research limitations/implications The main limitation of this research is the sample size, because 123 professionals that work with quality management in manufacturing companies participated in the research. It should be noted, however, that all parameters evaluated through the second-order confirmatory factorial analysis were validated. Practical implications The findings have great value for both quality management professionals, who may use those findings to guide the pre-implementation phase of a QMS, and researchers, who may use those findings as a foundation for future studies, in the development of models or tools related to QMS implementation. Originality/value No other paper was found on the scientific basis with the same focus for Brazilian manufacturing companies, thus demonstrating originality. The value of the research lies in the fact that the results presented here, statistically validated, may be used by other researchers and market professionals.

This article aims to analyze the existent literature on sustainability reports and its use on academic research, looking forward to contribute by identifying gaps and tendencies. A search on the world’s main research bases was narrowed down to 45 relevant articles. These articles were then analyzed and classified into 6 categories, previously defined by a panel of experts. They were: 1) stakeholder engagement; 2) quality and credibility of the reports; 3) tools and practices of sustainability reporting; 4) motivations and consequences of sustainability reporting; 5) sector/local corporate social responsibility practices; and 6) specific subjects. Results uncovered relevant gaps in the motivations and consequences of sustainability reporting, as well as the use of techniques to improve credibility of the documents, for the sake of accountability. It is also important to highlight the lack of studies focused on Latin America and Africa, impairing further development in sustainable practices on those regions. It is also worth emphasizing the originality of this article, since no similar articles were found in literature.

The purpose of this paper is to analyse the integration of discrete event simulation (DES) in operations management manufacturing tools. Due to the movement of the fourth industrial revolution (Industrie 4.0), the integration of manufacturing is a topic constantly discussed in many areas. Moreover, it presents great research and innovation opportunities. To achieve the objective of this study, a search was conducted using the main keywords found in papers related to manufacturing systems and operations management manufacturing tools. Also, academic databases were literature research to identify the keywords relevant to the study added to DES. We considered only articles from the last 8 years. At the end between the search, the integration between tools such as manufacturing execution system, enterprise resource planning, radio frequency identification, core manufacturing simulation data, e-Kanban with DES were analysed. Furthermore, it was observed that the tools cannot always be used separately, but in some cases, these tools should be used jointly to solve problems related to production systems. Another aspect observed was how the data collected in production systems are fed to the DES models. Through, it was possible to analyse an existing gap regarding how the data is used between DES and manufacturing systems, thereby enabling research development in this area.

Em um mundo globalizado, as organizações estão constantemente expostas a incertezas. Por isso, a gestão de riscos é fundamental. Para realização da análise de risco em projetos, seis processos de gerenciamento são definidos, de acordo com o guia de gerenciamento de projetos do Project Management Institute, sendo o foco deste trabalho o estudo do processo de avaliação quantitativa. Por meio de uma revisão de literatura, buscou-se entender quais os meios (técnicas) de analisar quantitativamente os riscos em projetos. Notou-se que toda aplicação exige grande investimento seja ele computacional, financeiro ou de conhecimento humano, tornando quase inviável a utilização desse processo de gerenciamento em projetos de menor porte. Nos 33 artigos analisados, foram levantados ao todo 8 métodos quantitativos para análise de risco em gestão de projetos. Os resultados dessa pesquisa podem ser utilizados tanto por pesquisadores, para pesquisas futuras, como por profissionais de mercado, para analisar a ferramenta que mais se adequa às suas necessidades.

In 1997, Eliyahu Goldratt proposed a method called Critical Chain Project Management (CCPM) to minimize the inefficiencies identified in traditional project management. The project management community accepted the proposed method as a viable alternative. However, to allow its implementation with a multiproject system, more research was necessary. Seeking to identify the key factors that influence the performance of the multiproject system applying the CCPM method, we performed a case study. Logistic regression analysis showed that applying the CCPM method in a multiproject system allows for better time estimation of activities and facilitates the allocation of critical resources. Esta pesquisa possui como principal foco a gestão de projetos associada ao desenvolvimento de novos produtos da indústria aeronáutica, destacando-se em especial a importância e eficiência dos processos de manufatura. A análise realizada tomou por base um questionário com os 47 processos disseminados pelo PMBOK, uma coleção de processos e conhecimentos aceitos como melhores práticas na área de gerenciamento de projetos. 20 profissionais com larga experiência no setor aeronáutico responderam à pesquisa e os dados foram tratados estatisticamente por meio das técnicas de Escalonamento Multidimensional e Análise Fatorial Exploratória para um único fator. Os resultados evidenciaram que os dez processos de maior importância estão associados às seguintes temáticas: 1º Desenvolver a equipe do projeto, 2º Controlar a qualidade, 3º Determinar o orçamento, 4º Conduzir as aquisições, 5º Controlar os riscos, 6º Identificar os riscos, 7º Planejar o gerenciamento de custos, 8º Gerenciar a equipe do projeto, 9º Planejar o gerenciamento das aquisições e 10º Planejar o gerenciamento de riscos. Apesar de bons resultados globais para os níveis de eficiência para os processos anteriores, observam-se ainda possibilidades de melhoria para a empresa estudada.

Highlights: The product development methodology aims to assist the planning and design of the product throughout its life cycle. Using selection criteria it is possible to choose a solution will be followed until the end of the development process and this process is known as optimization of product solutions. Design for Manufacturing and Assembly (DFMA) is an approach that allows selecting a product solution with better manufacturing and assembly performance. Computational modeling allows representing systems in virtual environment in order to reproduce its characteristics and to compare scenarios through simulation. Goal: The objective of this work was to apply the computer simulation to compare the productive performance, according to production times, productivity and resource utilization rate, of three solutions proposed for a raincoat for pets with thermal protection. Methodology: Initially, conceptual models representing the production systems for the three product solutions were generated. The systems were modeled in discrete event simulation software, enabling different scenarios testing, resulting in production performance indicators for each product solution. Results: The analysis of the performance indicators allow identifying that the third solution proposed for the product obtained the best productive performance in all proposed scenarios; therefore, it was chosen as the best solution for the product according to the DFMA approach. Limitations of the investigation: The application of the methodology indicated in this work was limited to the study of a single productive system of a specific product. Practical implications: This work presents a practical application of computer simulation tools applied to product development. Originality / Value: The original contribution of this work is the application of computational simulation of production systems in product development following the DFMA approach.

This article aims to analyze the primary criteria used by Brazilian business incubators to select new enterprises. The research method used was a documentary analysis with 124 selection notices available in the websites of business incubators. These criteria were divided into 17 categories, and the most mentioned among them were: innovation level, economic feasibility, and team capability, corroborating the ideas mentioned by other studies. The results presented in this research may be of great value for incubator managers and academics. Incubator managers may use these results to critically analyze their criteria and/or complement them. Academics, in turn, may use these results as a starting point for future research.

This study shows the contribution of Discrete Event Simulation (DES) for improvement of statics production scheduling process in the environment of dynamic demand. Using simulation software - Tecnomatix Plant Simulation 13 ® by Siemens, makes it possible to structure a digital factory model. It defines and validates the operating logic of this model and enables the automatic reconfiguration of production planning. This virtual model represents the operations of eyewear industry starting from placing customer request till collecting final product. The primary purpose is to automate most of the production planning process and enable automatic execution in virtual settings, which will potentially guide the physical operation. The result is to provoke integration between production management systems with simulation tools, therefore increase productivity, reduce waste and improve the use of labor.

Green Supply Chain Management (GSCM) has been receiving increased attention because of the urgent need of organizations to address sustainability issues as a condition for their competitiveness, and the issue of how performance should be measured becomes crucial. This paper performs a literature review on an academic basis in order to identify the main subjects and sustainable dimensions of research studies involving the performance measurement of GSCM and the gaps for further research. Sixty three percent of the analyzed papers are associated with framework, mathematical modelling, empirical research and application, and the principal gaps to be explored are the metrics, measures and integration of the GSCM with existing quality methods. Almost all of these subjects are discussed in an economic and environmental dimension, remaining the social dimension a relevant gap to be explored. Based on this scenario, this paper intends to make a contribution to the academia and professionals of the area.

The business incubators have an essential role at any global entrepreneurial ecosystem. Through the support offered to entrepreneurs in terms of infrastructure and management, they reduce mortality risk of startup companies and contribute to better performance of the country's economy. In order to make a contribution to the academia and to business incubators, this paper is primarily engaged in performing a literature review on Brazilian and international academic basis in order to identify which are the main themes of research conducted involving Brazilian business incubators. The results show that most of the themes are associated with the services provision by the incubators and its management; however, there are many gaps yet to be explored by academic researchers, such as internal characteristics or the interrelationship between business incubators and triple helix.

This paper analyzes the main difficulties in managing of Micro and Small enterprises of construction sector in Jundiai city. For this, a survey was done with 51 entrepreneurs and the difficulties analyzed in nine categories. Some results stand out among many others presented in this paper, such as 46% of respondents indicated that the tax burden as one of the most problematic aspects in economic and financial management, 41% who reported differences between the theoretical and real inventory and 52% who have problems in the strategic management of their business. Finally, it emphasizes that this research presents a deductive character and their results are valid only focused for entrepreneurs reported sample.

The high competitivity in the market and the theme of environmental conservation that has emerged in the last 30 years has led companies, governments and many other groups to introduce solutions that meet the market needs. Indicators have been created as tools of action and control both for internal and external issues, aiming to meet the new demands of economic, social and environmental sustainability. Within these concepts, the companies organised in clusters have real possibilities to be in evidence because of their potential in knowledge use, experience exchange, flexibility and social impact. This article aimed to understand how sustainability indicators can be used for small and medium enterprises (SMEs) belonging to clusters, and what is the approach of academic articles. Through a bibliographic search, we understood the importance of the concepts of sustainability for the creation of competitiveness and social structuring. However, the low number of articles related to the proposed theme shows that, although sustainability is widely disseminated, its use by SMEs is not yet common, offering opportunity for deeper academic research.
