Search

The LargE Area burst Polarimeter (LEAP) is one of two NASA Missions of Opportunity proposals that are currently in a Phase A Concept Study, with a final selection due later this year. It is a wide Field of View (FoV) Compton polarimeter designed to study Gamma-Ray Burst (GRB) polarization over the energy range from 50- 500 keV and to measure GRB spectra in the range from 20 keV - 5 MeV. During the Phase A Concept Study, lab measurements were conducted with a small-scale (5x5) prototype polarimeter module. This included both spectral and polarization measurements with laboratory calibration sources. Here the prototype measurements and the comparisons made with simulations of the prototype detector are described. These results demonstrate the basic functionality of the LEAP design.

The LargE Area Burst Polarimeter (LEAP) will radically improve our understanding of some of the most energetic phenomena in our Universe by exposing the underlying physics that governs astrophysical jets and the extreme environment surrounding newborn compact objects. LEAP will do this by making the highest fidelity polarization measurements to date of the prompt gamma-ray emission from a large sample of Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRBs). The science objectives are met with a single instrument deployed as an external payload on the ISS – a wide FOV Compton polarimeter that measures GRB polarization from 50–500 keV and GRB spectra from ~10 keV to 5 MeV. LEAP measures polarization using seven independent polarimeter modules, each with a 12x12 array of optically isolated high-Z and low-Z scintillation detectors readout by individual PMTs. LEAP is one of two NASA Missions of Opportunity proposals that are currently in a Phase A Concept Study, with a final selection due later this year.

We present the systematic spectral analyses of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) detected by the Fermi Gamma-Ray Burst Monitor during its first ten years of operation. This catalog contains two types of spectra: time-integrated spectral fits and spectral fits at the brightest time bin, from 2297 GRBs, resulting in a compendium of over 18,000 spectra. The four different spectral models used for fitting the spectra were selected based on their empirical importance to the shape of many GRBs. We describe in detail our procedure and criteria for the analyses, and present the bulk results in the form of parameter distributions both in the observer frame and in the GRB rest frame. 941 GRBs from the first four years have been refitted using the same methodology as that of the 1356 GRBs in years five through ten. The data files containing the complete results are available from the High-Energy Astrophysics Science Archive Research Center.

Fermi-Gamma-ray Burst Monitor observed a 1 s long gamma-ray signal (GW150914-GBM) starting 0.4 s after the first gravitational wave detection from the binary black hole merger GW150914. GW150914-GBM is consistent with a short gamma-ray burst origin; however, no unambiguous claims can be made as to the physical association of the two signals due to a combination of low gamma-ray flux and unfavorable location for Fermi-GBM. Here we answer the following question: if GW150914 and GW150914-GBM were associated, how many LIGO-Virgo binary black hole mergers would Fermi-GBM have to follow up to detect a second source? To answer this question, we perform simulated observations of binary black hole mergers with LIGO-Virgo and adopt different scenarios for gamma-ray emission from the literature. We calculate the ratio of simulated binary black hole mergers detected by LIGO-Virgo to the number of gamma-ray counterpart detections by Fermi-GBM, BBH-to-GRB ratio. A large majority of the models considered here predict a BBH-to-GRB ratio in the range of 5 to 20, but for optimistic cases can be as low as 2 or for pessimistic assumptions as high as 700. Hence we expect that the third observing run, with its high rate of binary black hole detections and assuming the absence of a joint detection, will provide strong constraints on the presented models., Comment: 11 pages, 2 tables, 7 figures, accepted to ApJ

We demonstrate how pulse structures in Short gamma-ray bursts (SGRBs), coupled with observations of GRB/GW 170817A, constrain the geometries of dying HMXRB systems composed of merging neutron stars., 5 pages, 8 figures

The weak transient detected by the Fermi Gamma-ray Burst Monitor (GBM) 0.4 s after GW150914 has generated much speculation regarding its possible association with the black-hole binary merger. Investigation of the GBM data by Connaughton et al. (2016) revealed a source location consistent with GW150914 and a spectrum consistent with a weak, short Gamma-Ray Burst. Greiner et al. (2016) present an alternative technique for fitting background-limited data in the low-count regime, and call into question the spectral analysis and the significance of the detection of GW150914-GBM presented in Connaughton et al. (2016). The spectral analysis of Connaughton et al. (2016) is not subject to the limitations of the low-count regime noted by Greiner et al. (2016). We find Greiner et al. (2016) used an inconsistent source position and did not follow the steps taken in Connaughton et al. (2016) to mitigate the statistical shortcomings of their software when analyzing this weak event. We use the approach of Greiner et al. (2016) to verify that our original spectral analysis is not biased. The detection significance of GW150914-GBM is established empirically, with a False Alarm Rate (FAR) of $\sim 10^{-4}$~Hz. A post-trials False Alarm Probability (FAP) of $2.2 \times 10^{-3}$ ($2.9 \sigma$) of this transient being associated with GW150914 is based on the proximity in time to the GW event of a transient with that FAR. The FAR and the FAP are unaffected by the spectral analysis that is the focus of Greiner et al. (2016)., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJL

On August 17, 2017 at 12:41:06 UTC the Fermi Gamma-ray Burst Monitor (GBM) detected and triggered on the short gamma-ray burst GRB 170817A. Approximately 1.7 s prior to this GRB, the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory (LIGO) triggered on a binary compact merger candidate associated with the GRB. This is the first unambiguous coincident observation of gravitational waves and electromagnetic radiation from a single astrophysical source and marks the start of gravitational-wave multi-messenger astronomy. We report the GBM observations and analysis of this ordinary short GRB, which extraordinarily confirms that at least some short GRBs are produced by binary compact mergers., Comment: Published in Astrophysical Journal Letters

The Gamma-ray Burst Monitor (GBM) on board the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope has triggered on over 300 terrestrial gamma-ray flashes (TGFs) since its launch in June 2008. With 14 detectors, GBM collects on average ~100 counts per triggered TGF, enabling unprecedented studies of the time profiles of TGFs. Here we present the first rigorous analysis of the temporal properties of a large sample of TGFs (278), including the distributions of the rise and fall times of the individual pulses and their durations. A variety of time profiles are observed with 19 of TGFs having multiple pulses separated in time and 31 clear cases of partially overlapping pulses. The effect of instrumental dead time and pulse pileup on the temporal properties are also presented. As the observed gamma ray pulse structure is representative of the electron flux at the source, TGF pulse parameters are critical to distinguish between relativistic feedback discharge and lightning leader models. We show that at least 67% of TGFs at satellite altitudes are significantly asymmetric. For the asymmetric pulses, the rise times are almost always shorter than the fall times. Those which are not are consistent with statistical fluctuations. The median rise time for asymmetric pulses is ~3 times shorter than for symmetric pulses while their fall times are comparable. The asymmetric shapes observed are consistent with the relativistic feedback discharge model when Compton scattering of photons between the source and Fermi is included, and instrumental effects are taken into account.

We present a search for gamma-ray bursts in the Fermi-GBM 10 year catalog that show similar characteristics to GRB 170817A, the first electromagnetic counterpart to a GRB identified as a binary neutron star (BNS) merger via gravitational wave observations. Our search is focused on a non-thermal pulse, followed by a thermal component, as observed for GRB 170817A. We employ search methods based on the measured catalog parameters and Bayesian Block analysis. Our multi-pronged approach, which includes examination of the localization and spectral properties of the thermal component, yields a total of 13 candidates, including GRB 170817A and the previously reported similar burst, GRB 150101B. The similarity of the candidates is likely caused by the same processes that shaped the gamma-ray signal of GRB 170817A, thus providing evidence of a nearby sample of short GRBs resulting from BNS merger events. Some of the newly identfied counterparts were observed by other space telescopes and ground observatories, but none of them have a measured redshift. We present an analysis of this sub-sample, and we discuss two models. From uncovering 13 candidates during a time period of ten years we predict that Fermi-GBM will trigger on-board on about one burst similar to GRB 170817A per year., Comment: 18 pages, 9 figures, 4 tables. [1] The observed γray fluence distribution of terrestrial gamma ray flashes (TGFs) detected by the Fermi Gamma-ray Burst Monitor (GBM) is altered by instrumental effects. We perform corrections for dead time, pulse pileup, and detection efficiency in a model-independent manner. A sample of 106 GBM TGFs is selected to include both TGFs that triggered GBM and weaker TGFs found using an off-line search. Detector dead time and pulse pileup lower the observed fluence of each TGF and the detection efficiency causes weaker TGFs to have a lower probability of detection than brighter TGFs. Monte Carlo simulations are performed in each case to correct for these effects. The corrected fluence distribution is well fit with a power law of index α=−2.20±0.13. This is consistent with previous estimates using other techniques. Neither a high-fluence cutoff nor a low-fluence limit is found. The fluence distribution is also expressed in units of TGF h−1 km−2 versus photons cm−2 per TGF.

[1] A new data mode and new analysis methods are used to detect Terrestrial Gamma-ray Flashes (TGFs) with the Fermi Gamma-ray Burst Monitor (GBM) 10 times more frequently than previously. In 1037 h of observations at times and over regions for which TGFs are expected, 384 new TGFs were found in addition to the 39 TGFs and two Terrestrial Electron Beam events already detected without the new data mode and methodology. Cosmic ray showers were found to be an important background; they show characteristic signatures in the data of both GBM and the Fermi Large Area Telescope Calorimeter that enable their removal, leaving a sample estimated to consist of ≈98% TGFs. The sample includes shorter TGFs than previously found with GBM. The true duration distribution likely contains additional short TGFs because their detection by GBM is limited by detector dead time. One-third of this sample has matches with locations from the World Wide Lightning Location Network (WWLLN)—maps of these locations show the geographic and meteorological features more clearly than maps of spacecraft locations. The intrinsic TGF rate is evaluated using the lightning rate maps of the Lightning Imaging Sensor, accounting for the detection efficiency of GBM as a function of spacecraft-source offset, from which we estimate a global TGF rate of ≈400,000 per year. With continuous production of data in the new mode we estimate that GBM will detect ≈850 TGFs per year.

[1] We show that the rate of association between terrestrial gamma ray flashes (TGFs) observed by the Fermi gamma ray burst monitor and VLF discharges detected by the World Wide Lightning Location Network (WWLLN) depends strongly on the duration of the TGF, with the shortest TGFs having associated WWLLN events over 50% of the time, and the longest TGFs showing a less than 10% match rate. This correlation is stronger if one excludes the WWLLN discharges that are not simultaneous (within 200 µs) with the TGF. We infer that the simultaneous VLF discharges are from the relativistic electron avalanches that are responsible for the flash of gamma rays and the nonsimultaneous VLF discharges are from related intracloud lightning strokes. The distributions of far-field radiated VLF stroke energy measured by WWLLN for the simultaneous and nonsimultaneous discharges support the hypothesis of two discrete populations of VLF signals associated with TGFs, with the simultaneous discharges among the strongest measured by WWLLN.

To elucidate the radiation mechanism of gamma ray bursts, we are developing the polarimeter which consists of segmented plastic scintillators and GAGG(Ce) scintillators attached with multi-anode photomultipliers and avalanche photodiodes, respectively. Constructing the bread board model with 36 pieces of plastic scintillator and 24 pieces of GAGG(Ce) scintillator, we have carried out the beam experiments at the KEK Photon Factory in Japan. At the same time, we carried out also computer simulation and we compared the experimental data with results of simulations. As the results, it was recognized that the modulation factor by the experiments is consistent with that by the simulations. On the other hand, though the detection efficiency obtained by the experiments is in rough agreement with that by the simulation, the value of the detection efficiency can not be well explained reasonably. This discrepancy is likely due to the incomplete energy calibration of the plastic scintillators.

We explain the results of Yu et al. (2015b) of the novel sharpness angle measurement to a large number of spectra obtained from the Fermi gamma-ray burst monitor. The sharpness angle is compared to the values obtained from various representative emission models: blackbody, single-electron synchrotron, synchrotron emission from a Maxwellian or power-law electron distribution. It is found that more than 91% of the high temporally and spectrally resolved spectra are inconsistent with any kind of optically thin synchrotron emission model alone. It is also found that the limiting case, a single temperature Maxwellian synchrotron function, can only contribute up to 58+23 -18% of the peak flux. These results show that even the sharpest but non-realistic case, the single-electron synchrotron function, cannot explain a large fraction of the observed spectra. Since any combination of physically possible synchrotron spectra added together will always further broaden the spectrum, emission mechanisms other than optically thin synchrotron radiation are likely required in a full explanation of the spectral peaks or breaks of the GRB prompt emission phase., 9 pages, 7 figures. The possible short gamma-ray burst (GRB) observed by {\it Fermi}/GBM in coincidence with the first gravitational wave (GW) detection, offers new ways to test GRB prompt emission models. Gravitational wave observations provide previously unaccessible physical parameters for the black hole central engine such as its horizon radius and rotation parameter. Using a minimum jet launching radius from the Advanced LIGO measurement of GW~150914, we calculate photospheric and internal shock models and find that they are marginally inconsistent with the GBM data, but cannot be definitely ruled out. Dissipative photosphere models, however have no problem explaining the observations. Based on the peak energy and the observed flux, we find that the external shock model gives a natural explanation, suggesting a low interstellar density ($\sim 10^{-3}$ cm$^{-3}$) and a high Lorentz factor ($\sim 2000$). We only speculate on the exact nature of the system producing the gamma-rays, and study the parameter space of a generic Blandford Znajek model. If future joint observations confirm the GW-short GRB association we can provide similar but more detailed tests for prompt emission models., 10 pages, 4 figures, minor additions, ApJL accepted

We aim to obtain high-quality time-resolved spectral fits of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) observed by the Gamma-ray Burst Monitor (GBM) on board the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope. We perform time-resolved spectral analysis with high temporal and spectral resolution of the brightest bursts observed by Fermi GBM in its first 4 years of mission. We present the complete catalog containing 1,491 spectra from 81 bursts with high spectral and temporal resolution. Distributions of parameters, statistics of the parameter populations, parameter-parameter and parameter-uncertainty correlations, and their exact values are obtained and presented as main results in this catalog. We report a criterion that is robust enough to automatically distinguish between different spectral evolutionary trends between bursts. We also search for plausible blackbody emission components and find that only 3 bursts (36 spectra in total) show evidence of a pure Planck function. It is observed that the averaged time-resolved low-energy power-law index and peak energy are slightly harder than the time-integrated values. A characteristic energy of individual gamma-ray burst (GRB) spectra can in most cases be determined from the peak energy of the energy density spectra ($\nu{\cal F}_{\nu}$), called '$E_{\rm peak}$'. Distributions of $E_{\rm peak}$ have been compiled for time-resolved spectra from bright GRBs, and also time-averaged spectra and peak flux spectra for nearly every burst observed by CGRO-BATSE and Fermi-GBM. Even when determined by an instrument with a broad energy band, such as GBM (8 keV to 40 MeV), the distributions themselves peak at around 240 keV in the observer's frame, with a spread of roughly a decade in energy. $E_{\rm peak}$ can have considerable evolution (sometimes greater than one decade) within any given burst, as amply demonstrated by single pulses in GRB110721A and GRB130427A. Meanwhile, several luminosity or energy relations have been proposed to correlate with either the time-integrated or peak flux $E_{\rm peak}$. Thus, when discussing correlations with $E_{\rm peak}$, the question arises, "Which $E_{\rm peak}$?". A single burst may be characterized by any one of a number of values for $E_{\rm peak}$ that are associated with it. Using a single pulse simulation model with spectral evolution as a proxy for the type of spectral evolution observed in many bursts, we investigate how the time-averaged $E_{\rm peak}$ emerges from the spectral evolution within a single pulse, how this average naturally correlates with the peak flux derived $E_{\rm peak}$ in a burst and how the distribution in $E_{\rm peak}$ values from many bursts derives its surprisingly narrow width., Comment: 49 pages, 15 figures, 3 tables; accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal (version 2: prettified 2-column format; content unchanged)

We examine electron and nuclear recoil backgrounds from radioactivity in the ZEPLIN-III dark matter experiment at Boulby. The rate of low-energy electron recoils in the liquid xenon WIMP target is 0.75$\pm$0.05 events/kg/day/keV, which represents a 20-fold improvement over the rate observed during the first science run. Energy and spatial distributions agree with those predicted by component-level Monte Carlo simulations propagating the effects of the radiological contamination measured for materials employed in the experiment. Neutron elastic scattering is predicted to yield 3.05$\pm$0.5 nuclear recoils with energy 5-50 keV per year, which translates to an expectation of 0.4 events in a 1-year dataset in anti-coincidence with the veto detector for realistic signal acceptance. Less obvious background sources are discussed, especially in the context of future experiments. These include contamination of scintillation pulses with Cherenkov light from Compton electrons and from $\beta$ activity internal to photomultipliers, which can increase the size and lower the apparent time constant of the scintillation response. Another challenge is posed by multiple-scatter $\gamma$-rays with one or more vertices in regions that yield no ionisation. If the discrimination power achieved in the first run can be replicated, ZEPLIN-III should reach a sensitivity of $\sim 1 \times 10^{-8}$ pb$\cdot$year to the scalar WIMP-nucleon elastic cross-section, as originally conceived., Comment: 12 pages, 5 figures

Photospheric (thermal) emission is inherent to the gamma-ray burst (GRB) "fireball" model. We show here, that inclusion of this component in the analysis of the GRB prompt emission phase naturally explains some of the prompt GRB spectra seen by the Fermi satellite over its entire energy band. The sub-MeV peak is explained as multi-color black body emission, and the high energy tail, extending up to the GeV band, results from roughly similar contributions of synchrotron emission, synchrotron self Compton(SSC) and Comptonization of the thermal photons by energetic electrons originating after dissipation of the kinetic energy above the photosphere. We show how this analysis method results in a complete, self consistent picture of the physical conditions at both emission sites of the thermal and non-thermal radiation. We study the connection between the thermal and non-thermal parts of the spectrum, and show how the values of the free model parameters are deduced from the data. We demonstrate our analysis method on GRB090902B: We deduce a Lorentz factor in the range 920 = 3.5 - 4.1 * 10^{15} cm. By comparison to afterglow data, we deduce that a large fraction, epsilon_d ~85% - 95% of the kinetic energy is dissipated, and that large fraction, ~equipartition of this energy is carried by the electrons and the magnetic field. This high value of epsilon_d questions the "internal shock" scenario as the main energy dissipation mechanism for this GRB.

The Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope observed the bright and long GRB090902B, lying at a redshift of z = 1.822. Together the Large Area Telescope (LAT) and the Gamma-ray Burst Monitor (GBM) cover the spectral range from 8 keV to >300 GeV is covered. Here we show that the prompt burst spectrum is consistent with emission from the jet photosphere combined with non-thermal emission described by a single power-law with photon index -1.9. The photosphere gives rise to a strong quasi-blackbody spectrum which is somewhat broader than a single Planck function and has a characteristic temperature of ~290keV. We derive the photospheric radius Rph = (1.1 \pm 0.3) x 10^12 Y^{1/4} cm and the bulk Lorentz factor of the flow, which is found to vary by a factor of two and has a maximal value of Gamma = 750 Y^{1/4}. Here Y is the ratio between the total fireball energy and the energy emitted in the gamma-rays. We find that during the first quarter of the prompt phase the photospheric emission dominates, which explains the delayed onset of the observed flux in the LAT compared to the GBM. We model the photospheric emission with a multi-color blackbody and its shape indicates that the photospheric radius increases at higher latitudes. We interpret the broad band emission as synchrotron emission at R ~ 4x10^15 cm. The Energetic Gamma Ray Experiment Telescope (EGRET) calorimeter, Total Absorption Shower Counter (TASC), was triggered by the Burst And Transient Source Experiment (BATSE) and thus observed several bursts in the energy range of 1-200 MeV. The analysis of combined BATSE Large Area Detector and EGRET TASC data have been developed and discussed previously. Spectroscopy of GRB941017 based on this analysis uncovered an MeV component that would be hidden in the brightness of the synchrotron component in a time-integrated spectrum of the whole burst, while separation into shorter time intervals allowed a unique identification of a new component different from the synchrotron component. In this paper the spectral temporal evolution of the 68 brightest long BATSE bursts, in the broadest energy range yet reported, is studied using the analysis used for GRB941017. We consider the Band function to describe the spectra from keV to MeV energies. Only 21 of the 68 bursts showed MeV emission detectable by TASC. We observed three bursts that contained spectra with peak energy E {sub peak}>2 MeV.

We present the spectral analysis of duration-integrated broadband spectra (in $\sim30 $keV$-200 $MeV) of 15 bright BATSE gamma-ray bursts (GRBs). Some GRB spectra are very hard, with their spectral peak energies being above the BATSE LAD passband limit of $\sim$2 MeV. In such cases, their high-energy spectral parameters (peak energy and high-energy power-law indices) cannot be adequately constrained by BATSE LAD data alone. A few dozen bright BATSE GRBs were also observed with EGRET's calorimeter, TASC, in multi-MeV energy band, with a large effective area and fine energy resolution. Combining the BATSE and TASC data, therefore, affords spectra that span four decades of energy ($30 $keV$-200 $MeV), allowing for a broadband spectral analysis with good statistics. Studying such broadband high-energy spectra of GRB prompt emission is crucial, as they provide key clues to understanding its gamma-ray emission mechanism. Among the 15 GRB spectra, we found two cases with a significant high-energy excess, and another case with a extremely high peak energy (\epeak $\gtrsim$ 170 MeV). There have been very limited number of GRBs observed at MeV energies and above, and only a few instruments have been capable of observing GRBs in this energy band with such high sensitivity. Thus, our analysis results presented here should also help predict GRB observations with current and future high-energy instruments such as AGILE and GLAST, as well as with ground-based very-high-energy telescopes., Comment: 18 pages (emulateapj) including 7 figures & 2 tables. A sterile neutrino of ~keV mass is a well motivated dark matter candidate. Its decay generates an X-ray line that offers a unique target for X-ray telescopes. For the first time, we use the Gamma-ray Burst Monitor (GBM) onboard the Fermi Gamma-Ray Space Telescope to search for sterile neutrino decay lines; our analysis covers the energy range 10-25 keV (sterile neutrino mass 20-50 keV), which is inaccessible to X-ray and gamma-ray satellites such as Chandra, Suzaku, XMM-Newton, and INTEGRAL. The extremely wide field of view of the GBM enables a large fraction of the Milky Way dark matter halo to be probed. After implementing careful data cuts, we obtain ~53 days of full sky observational data. We observe an excess of photons towards the Galactic Center, as expected from astrophysical emission. We search for sterile neutrino decay lines in the energy spectrum, and find no significant signal. From this, we obtain upper limits on the sterile neutrino mixing angle as a function of mass. In the sterile neutrino mass range 25-40 keV, we improve upon previous upper limits by approximately an order of magnitude. Better understanding of detector and astrophysical backgrounds, as well as detector response, will further improve the sensitivity of a search with the GBM., 16 pages, 11 figures, references added, discussion expanded, some typos fixed, matches the published version

We study the time-resolved spectra of eight GRBs observed by Fermi GBM in its first five years of mission, with 1 keV - 1 MeV fluence $f>1.0\times10^{-4}$ erg cm$^{-2}$ and signal-to-noise level $\text{S/N}\geq10.0$ above 900 keV. We aim to constrain in detail the spectral properties of GRB prompt emission on a time-resolved basis and to discuss the theoretical implications of the fitting results in the context of various prompt emission models. We perform time-resolved spectral analysis using a variable temporal binning technique according to optimal S/N criteria, resulting in a total of 299 time-resolved spectra. We fit the Band function to all spectra and obtain the distributions for the low-energy power-law index $\alpha$, the high-energy power-law index $\beta$, the peak energy in the observed $\nu F_\nu$ spectrum $E_\text{p}$, and the difference between the low- and high-energy power-law indices $\Delta s=\alpha-\beta$. Using the distributions of $\Delta s$ and $\beta$, the electron population index $p$ is found to be consistent with the "moderately fast" scenario which fast- and slow-cooling scenarios cannot be distinguished. We also apply a physically motivated synchrotron model, which is a triple power-law with constrained power-law indices and a blackbody component, to test for consistency with a synchrotron origin for the prompt emission and obtain the distributions for the two break energies $E_\text{b,1}$ and $E_\text{b,2}$, the middle segment power-law index $\beta$, and the Planck function temperature $kT$. A synchrotron model is found consistent with the majority of time-resolved spectra for these eight energetic Fermi GBM bursts with good high-energy photon statistics, as long as both the cooling and injection break are included and the leftmost spectral slope is lifted either by inclusion of a thermal component or when an evolving magnetic field is accounted for., Comment: 20 pages, 7 figures, 8 tables, accepted for publication in A&A

The Fermi Gamma-ray Burst Monitor (GBM) has detected over 1400 Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRBs) since it began science operations in July, 2008. We use a subset of over 300 GRBs localized by instruments such as Swift, the Fermi Large Area Telescope, INTEGRAL, and MAXI, or through triangulations from the InterPlanetary Network (IPN), to analyze the accuracy of GBM GRB localizations. We find that the reported statistical uncertainties on GBM localizations, which can be as small as 1 degree, underestimate the distance of the GBM positions to the true GRB locations and we attribute this to systematic uncertainties. The distribution of systematic uncertainties is well represented (68% confidence level) by a 3.7 degree Gaussian with a non-Gaussian tail that contains about 10% of GBM-detected GRBs and extends to approximately 14 degrees. A more complex model suggests that there is a dependence of the systematic uncertainty on the position of the GRB in spacecraft coordinates, with GRBs in the quadrants on the Y-axis better localized than those on the X-axis., accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal Supplement Series

The next large NASA mission in the field of γ-ray astronomy is the Gamma-Ray Large Area Space Telescope (GLAST), which is scheduled for a launch end of 2007. This satellite consists of the main instrument LAT (Large-Area Telescope) which is sensitive in the energy range between 10 MeV and 300$>>300 GeV, and a secondary instrument, the Gamma-Ray Burst Monitor (GBM), sensitive from 10 keV to 30 MeV. This omnidirectional monitor is an important instrument for γ-ray burst (GRB) science with GLAST, as it provides the link between the majority of the γ-ray busts emitting at lower energies and the high-energy events of γ-ray bursts and other transients. It will also serve as a trigger to increase the detection rate of γ-ray burst with the LAT. The GBM will provide real-time burst locations over a wide field-of-view (FoV) with sufficient accuracy to repoint the whole GLAST spacecraft. Time-resolved spectra of bursts recorded with LAT and the burst monitor will allow the investigation of the relation between the keV and the MeV–GeV emission from GRBs over seven decades in energy and will provide new insights into the physics of GRBs in general. In addition, the excellent localization of GRBs by the LAT will stimulate follow-up observations at other wavelengths which may yield clues about the nature of the burst sources.

We present a physical framework that can account for most of the observed spectral properties of the prompt gamma-ray burst emission. This includes the variety of spectral shapes, shape evolutions, and spectral correlations between flux and spectral peak, within bursts described by Borgonovo & Ryde, and among bursts described by Amati/Ghirlanda. In our proposed model the spectral peak is given by the photospheric emission from a relativistic outflow for which the horizon length is much smaller than the radial width. The observed duration of the thermal flash will be given by the radial light-crossing time. This then gives that the typical emission site is at ~10e11 cm from the center, with a Lorentz factor of ~300. This emission is accompanied by non-thermal emission from dissipation locations outside the photosphere. The relative strength of these two components depend on injection effects at the central engine leading to varying relative location of the saturation and photospheric radii. The total emission can then reproduce the observed variety. The spectral correlations are found by assuming that the amount of energy dissipated depends non-linearly on the averaged particle density. We present a systematic spectral analysis of 350 bright GRBs observed with BATSE, with high spectral and temporal resolution. Our sample was selected from the complete set of 2704 BATSE GRBs, and included 17 short GRBs. To obtain well-constrained spectral parameters, four different photon models were fitted and the spectral parameters that best represent each spectrum were statistically determined. A thorough analysis was performed on 350 time-integrated and 8459 time-resolved burst spectra. Using the results, we compared time-integrated and time-resolved spectral parameters, and also studied correlations among the parameters and their evolution within each burst. The resulting catalog is the most comprehensive study of spectral properties of GRB prompt emission to date, and provides constraints with exceptional statistics on particle acceleration and emission mechanisms in GRBs., To appear in the proceedings of the meeting "Gamma Ray Bursts in the Swift Era"

Shock acceleration is an ubiquitous phenomenon in astrophysical plasmas. Plasma waves and their associated instabilities (e.g., Buneman, Weibel and other two-stream instabilities) created in collisionless shocks are responsible for particle (electron, positron, and ion) acceleration. Using a 3-D relativistic electromagnetic particle (REMP) code, we have investigated particle acceleration associated with a relativistic jet front propagating into an ambient plasma. We find small differences in the results for no ambient and modest ambient magnetic fields. Simulations show that the Weibel instability created in the collisionless shock front accelerates jet and ambient particles both perpendicular and parallel to the jet propagation direction. The small scale magnetic field structure generated by the Weibel instability is appropriate to the generation of ``jitter'' radiation from deflected electrons (positrons) as opposed to synchrotron radiation. The jitter radiation resulting from small scale magnetic field structures may be important for understanding the complex time structure and spectral evolution observed in gamma-ray bursts or other astrophysical sources containing relativistic jets and relativistic collisionless shocks., Comment: 6 pages, 1 figure, revised and accepted for Advances in Space Research (35th COSPAR Scientific Assembly, Paris, 18-25 July 2004)

On January 6th 2004, the IBAS burst alert system triggered the 8th gamma-ray burst (GRB) to be located by the INTEGRAL satellite. The position was determined and publicly distributed within 12s, prompting ESA's XMM-Newton to execute a ToO observation just 5 hours later, during which an X-ray afterglow was detected. The GRB had a duration ~52s with two distinct pulses separated by \~42s. Here we present the results of imaging and spectral analyses of the prompt emission from INTEGRAL data and the X-ray afterglow from XMM-Newton data. The gamma-ray spectrum is consistent with a single power-law of photon index -1.72 +/- 0.15. The fluence (20-200 keV) was 8.2 x 10^-7 erg cm^-2. The X-ray afterglow (F_nu (t) propto nu^-beta_X t^-delta) was extremely hard with beta_X = 0.47 +/- 0.01 and delta = 1.46 +/- 0.04. The 2-10 keV flux 11 hours after the burst was 1.1 x 10^-12 erg cm^-2 s^-1. The time profile of the GRB is consistent with the observed trends from previous analysis of BATSE GRBs. We find that the X-ray data are not well-fit by either a simple spherical fireball or by a speading jet, expanding into a homogeneous medium or a wind environment. Based on previously determined correlations between GRB spectra and redshift, we estimate a redshift of ~0.9^+0.5_-0.4 (1 sigma) and a lower limit on the isotropic radiated energy of ~5 x 10^51 erg in this burst., Comment: accepted for publication in A&A

We report initial results on the statistical properties of the dimmest gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) observed with the Burst and Transient Source Experiment (BATSE), using new ground-based methods to obtain a sample of GRBs from 502 days of BATSE data. Using the most sensitive ground-based detection of GRBs, the sample extends to GRBs much fainter than those detected by the onboard trigger, but because of the temporal resolution of the data, the sample is limited to GRBs of duration of at least 2 s. For each detected event, Bayesian probabilities are calculated for the event to belong to each of seven classes of differing physical origins. The sample of GRB candidates is defined by the requirement that the Bayesian probability for belonging to the GRB class is higher than 0.5. The intensity distribution of the GRB sample is corrected using a Monte Carlo simulation of the postflight detection efficiency. The sky distribution of the dimmest BATSE bursts is consistent with isotropy. The dimmest bursts are softer than the brightest triggered bursts.

The small reference sample of six BATSE gamma-ray bursts with known redshifts from optical afterglows is compared with a comparison group of the 218 brightest BATSE bursts. These two groups are shown to be consistent both with respect to the distributions of the spectral peak parameter in the observer's frame and also with respect to the distributions of the frame-independent cosmological invariant parameter (CIP). Using the known values of the redshifts (z) for the reference sample, the rest-frame distribution of spectral parameters is built. The deredshifted distribution of the spectral parameters of the reference sample is compared with distribution of these parameters for the comparison group after deredshifting by the factor 1/(1 + z), with z a free parameter. Requiring consistency between these two distributions produces a collective estimation of the best fitting redshifts for the comparison group z = 1.8-3.6. These values can be considered as the average cosmological redshift of the sources of the brightest BATSE bursts. The most probable value of the peak energy of the spectrum in the rest frame is 920 keV.

The two instruments aboard the Gamma-Ray Large Area Space Telescope (GLAST) mission will make unprecedented spectral observations of gamma-ray bursts. I will discuss what new science we can expect from GLAST.

The current scenario for gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) involves internal shocks for the prompt GRB emission phase and external shocks for the afterglow phase. Assuming optically thin synchrotron emission from isotropically distributed energetic shocked electrons, GRB spectra observed with a low-energy power-law spectral index greater than -2/3 (for positive photon number indices E(exp alpha) indicate a problem with this model. For spectra that do not violate this condition, additional tests of the shock model can be made by comparing the low- and high-energy spectral indices, on the basis of the model's assertion that synchrotron emission from a single power-law distribution of electrons is responsible for both the low-energy and the high-energy power-law portions of the spectra. We find in most cases that the inferred relationship between the two spectral indices of observed GRB spectra is inconsistent with the constraints from the simple optically thin synchrotron shock emission model. In this sense, the prompt burst phase is different from the afterglow phase, and this difference may be related to anisotropic distributions of particles or to their continual acceleration in shocks during the prompt phase.

The connection between Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRBs) and their afterglows is currently not well understood. Afterglow models of synchrotron emission generated by external shocks in the GRB fireball model predict emission detectable in the gamma-ray regime ($\gax 25$ keV). In this paper, we present a temporal and spectral analysis of a subset of BATSE GRBs with smooth extended emission tails to search for signatures of the ``early high-energy afterglow'', i.e., afterglow emission that initially begins in the gamma-ray phase and subsequently evolves into X-Ray, uv, optical, and radio emission as the blast wave is decelerated by the ambient medium. From a sample of 40 GRBs we find that the temporal decays are best described with a power-law $\sim t^{\beta}$, rather than an exponential, with a mean index $ \approx -2$. Spectral analysis shows that $\sim 20%$ of these events are consistent with fast-cooling synchrotron emission for an adiabatic blast wave; three of which are consistent with the blast wave evolution of a jet, with $F_{\nu} \sim t^{-p}$. This behavior suggests that, in some cases, the emission may originate from a narrow jet, possibly consisting of ``nuggets'' whose angular size are less than $1 / \Gamma$, where $\Gamma$ is the bulk Lorentz factor., Comment: 17 pages, 4 color PostScript figures, to appear in ApJ May 10, 2002 issue

Recent observations by the $Fermi$ Gamma-ray Space Telescope have confirmed the existence of thermal and non-thermal components in the prompt photon spectra of some Gamma-ray bursts (GRBs). Through an analysis of six bright Fermi GRBs, we have discovered a correlation between the observed photospheric and non-thermal $\gamma$-ray emission components of several GRBs using a physical model that has previously been shown to be a good fit to the Fermi data. From the spectral parameters of these fits we find that the characteristic energies, $E_{\rm p}$ and $kT$, of these two components are correlated via the relation $E_{\rm p} \propto T^{\alpha}$ which varies from GRB to GRB. We present an interpretation in which the value of index $\alpha$ indicates whether the jet is dominated by kinetic or magnetic energy. To date, this jet composition parameter has been assumed in the modeling of GRB outflows rather than derived from the data.

A study of a set of well-isolated pulses in Long and Intermediate gamma ray burst light curves indicates that simple pulse models having smooth and monotonic pulse rise and decay regions are inadequate. Examining the residuals of fits of pulses to such models suggests the following patterns of departure from smooth pulses: three separate wavelike peaks found in the residuals of each pulse (the precursor peak, the central peak, and the decay peak) combine with the underlying Norris et al. (2005) pulse model to produce five distinct regions in the temporal evolution of each pulse. The Precursor Shelf occurs prior to or concurrent with the exponential Rapid Rise. The pulse reaches maximum intensity at the Peak Plateau, then undergoes a Rapid Decay. The decay gradually slows into an Extended Tail. Despite these distinct temporal segments, the pulses studied are almost universally characterized by hard to soft spectral evolution, arguing that the new pulse features reflect a single evolution, rather than being artifacts of pulse overlap. The fluctuations can give a single pulse the appearance of having up to three distinct localized peaks, leading to ambiguities in pulse-fitting if an incorrect pulse model is used. The approach demonstrates that complex GRBs may be composed of fewer pulses than indicated by the number of peaks. The large degree of similar spectro-temporal behavior within gamma-ray burst pulses indicates that a single process is responsible for producing pulses spanning a tremendous range of durations, luminosities, and spectral hardnesses, and the correlated characteristics of the wavelike peaks are related to the pulse asymmetry, suggesting kinematic origins that seem supportive of relativistic shocks., 52 pages, 20 figures, accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal

The observations of the exceptionally bright gamma-ray burst (GRB) 130427A by the Large Area Telescope aboard the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope provide constraints on the nature of such unique astrophysical sources. GRB 130427A had the largest fluence, highest-energy photon (95 GeV), longest $\gamma$-ray duration (20 hours), and one of the largest isotropic energy releases ever observed from a GRB. Temporal and spectral analyses of GRB 130427A challenge the widely accepted model that the non-thermal high-energy emission in the afterglow phase of GRBs is synchrotron emission radiated by electrons accelerated at an external shock., Comment: 30 pages, 6 figures. The early and late stages of gamma-ray bursts are studied in a statistical analysis of the large sample of long BATSE events. The primary peak is used as the boundary between the early and late stages of emission. Significant differences are found between the stages: the early stage is shorter, it has harder emission, and it becomes a smaller fraction of the total burst duration for burst groups of decreasing intensity.

This is the first in a series of gamma-ray burst spectroscopy catalogs from the Burst And Transient Source Experiment (BATSE) on the Compton Gamma Ray Observatory, each covering a different aspect of burst phenomenology. In this paper, we present time-sequences of spectral fit parameters for 156 bursts selected for either their high peak flux or fluence. All bursts have at least eight spectra in excess of 45 sigma above background and span burst durations from 1.66 to 278 s. Individual spectral accumulations are typically 128 ms long at the peak of the brightest events, but can be as short as 16 ms, depending on the type of data selected. We have used mostly high energy resolution data from the Large Area Detectors, covering an energy range of typically 28 - 1800 keV. The spectral model chosen is from a small empirically-determined set of functions, such as the well-known `GRB' function, that best fits the time-averaged burst spectra. Thus, there are generally three spectral shape parameters available for each of the 5500 total spectra: a low-energy power-law index, a characteristic break energy and possibly a high-energy power-law index. We present the distributions of the observed sets of these parameters and comment on their implications. Six intensity groups with ~150 BATSE gamma-ray bursts each are compared using average emissivity curves. Time-stretch factors for each of the dimmer groups are estimated with respect to the brightest group, which serves as the reference, taking into account the systematics of counts-produced noise effects and choice statistics. A stretching/intensity anti-correlation is found with good statistical significance during the average back slopes of bursts. A stretch factor ~2 is found between the 150 dimmest bursts, with peak flux 4.1 ph cm^{-2} s^{-1}. On the other hand, while a trend of increasing stretching factor may exist for rise fronts for burst with decreasing peak flux from >4.1 ph cm^{-2} s^{-1} down to 0.7 ph cm^{-2} s^{-1}, the magnitude of the stretching factor is less than ~ 1.4 and is therefore inconsistent with stretching factor of back slope., 21 pages, 3 figures. The concept of emission time tau N is suggested as a temporal parameter which is complementary to the classical parameters of duration times T 50 and T 90. The emission time is defined as the time of emission of N% of the total fluence. The definition adds the time bins of high fluence in decreasing fluence rank until N% of the fluence has been reached. The emission time interval excludes low-emission intervals of bursts and so the emission time characterizes the state of high power emission. The distribution of this new parameter is found to be bimodal for bright bursts. The distributions of emission time tau-30 and tau-50, for groups based on burst intensity, are also compared.

We have analyzed the evolution of the spectral hardness parameter Epk as a function of fluence in gamma-ray bursts. We fit 41 pulses within 26 bursts with the trend reported by Liang & Kargatis (1996) which found that Epk decays exponentially with respect to photon fluence. We also fit these pulses with a slight modification of this trend, where Epk decays linearly with energy fluence. In both cases, we found the set of 41 pulses to be consistent with the trend. For the latter trend, which we believe to be more physical, the distribution of the decay constant is roughly log-normal, with a mean of 1.75 +/- 0.07 and a FWHM of 1.0 +/- 0.1. Regarding an earlier reported invariance in the decay constant among different pulses in a single burst, we found probabilities of 0.49 to 0.84 (depending on the test used) that such invariance would occur by coincidence, most likely due to the narrow distribution of decay constant values among pulses., 17 pages, 7 figure pages, 2 table pages, submitted to The Astrophysical Journal

The Burst and Transient Source Experiment (BATSE) on the Compton Gamma Ray Observatory (CGRO) has triggered on 1637 cosmic gamma-ray bursts between 1991 April 19 and 1996 August 29. These events constitute the Fourth BATSE burst catalog. The current version (4Br) has been revised from the version first circulated on CD-ROM in September 1997 (4B) to include improved locations for a subset of bursts that have been reprocssed using additional data. A significant difference from previous BATSE catalogs is the inclusion of bursts from periods when the trigger energy range differed from the nominal 50-300 keV. We present tables of the burst occurrence times, locations, peak fluxes, fluences, and durations. Gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) are thought to arise when an extremely relativistic outflow of particles from a massive explosion (the nature of which is still unclear) interacts with material surrounding the site of the explosion. Observations of the evolving changes in emission at many wavelengths allow us to investigate the origin of the photons, and so potentially determine the nature of the explosion. Here we report the results of γ-ray, optical, infrared, submillimetre, millimetre and radio observations of the burst GRB990123 and its afterglow. Our interpretation of the data indicates that the initial and afterglow emissions are associated with three distinct regions in the fireball. The peak flux of the afterglow, one day after the burst, has a lower frequency than observed for other bursts; this explains the short-lived radio emission. We suggest that the differences between bursts reflect variations in the magnetic-field strength in the afterglow-emitting regions.

Variable X-ray sources that appear to be the afterglows of the strong gamma-ray bursts GRB 970616 and GRB 970828 have been discovered with the RXTE PCA. First seen less than 4 hours after the burst, the flux from the sources decreased with time. Although near the sensitivity limit of the PCA, the sources are the brightest afterglows yet seen in X-rays. Similar observations of two other bursts did not detect any afterglows. These results are part of a continuing collaboration between RXTE, BATSE, and IPN scientists to rapidly detect X-ray afterglows of bright gamma-ray bursts.

We present evidence for burst emission from SGR 1900+14 with a power-law high energy spectrum extending beyond 500 keV. Unlike previous detections of high energy photons during bursts from SGRs, these emissions are not associated with high-luminosity burst intervals. Not only is the emission hard, but the spectra are better fit by Band's GRB function rather than by the traditional optically-thin thermal bremsstrahlung model. We find that the spectral evolution within these hard events obeys a hardness/intensity anti-correlation. Temporally, these events are distinct from typical SGR burst emissions in that they are longer (~ 1 s) and have relatively smooth profiles. Despite a difference in peak luminosity of > 1E+11 between these bursts from SGR 1900+14 and cosmological GRBs, there are striking temporal and spectral similarities between the two kinds of bursts, aside from spectral evolution.
