WOCS 4540 is the longest orbital period ($P_{\rm orb}=3030$ days) blue straggler (BSS) - white dwarf (WD) pair in the old open cluster NGC 188 . It also contains one of the most luminous BSS in the cluster. Prior \textit{Hubble Space Telescope} COS spectroscopy measured a WD mass of 0.53 $M_{\odot}$, indicative of a carbon-oxygen WD and suggesting previous mass transfer from an asymptotic branch giant (AGB). Detailed modeling of the system evolution, including red giant branch phase wind mass transfer, AGB wind Roche-lobe overflow and regular Roche-lobe overflow, is done with Modules for Experiments in Stellar Astrophysics. The best-fit model produces excellent agreement with a wide array of observational constraints on the BSS, the WD and the binary system. To produce the observed luminosity and effective temperature of the BSS, all three donor mass-transfer mechanisms contribute similarly to build a 1.5 $M_{\odot}$ BSS. The overall mass-transfer efficiency is 55%. Regular Roche-lobe overflow occurs only during the largest AGB thermal pulse, but yields a very high accretion rate at 75% efficiency and briefly (less than 1 Myr) a very high luminosity boost from the accretor., Comment: 17 pages, 17 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

We present the orbital solution of a peculiar double-lined spectroscopic and eclipsing binary system, 2M17091769+3127589. This solution was obtained by a simultaneous fit of both APOGEE radial velocities and TESS and ASAS-SN light curves to determine masses and radii. This system consists of an $M=0.256^{+0.010}_{-0.006}$ $M_\odot$, $R=3.961^{+0.049}_{-0.032}$ $R_{\odot}$ red giant and a hotter $M=1.518 ^{+0.057}_{-0.031}$ $M_\odot$, $R=2.608^{+0.034}_{-0.321}$ $R_{\odot}$ subgiant. Modelling with the MESA evolutionary codes indicates that the system likely formed 5.26 Gyrs ago, with a $M=1.2$ $M_\odot$ primary that is now the system's red giant and a $M=1.11$ $M_\odot$ secondary that is now a more massive subgiant. Due to Roche-lobe overflow as the primary ascends the red giant branch, the more evolved "primary" (i.e., originally the more massive star of the pair) is now only one-sixth as massive as the "secondary". Such a difference between the initial and the current mass ratio is one of the most extreme detected so far. Evolutionary modelling suggests the system is still engaged in mass transfer, at a rate of $\dot{M} \sim 10^{-9}$ $M_\odot$ yr$^{-1}$, and it provides an example of a less evolved precursor to some of the systems that consist of white dwarfs and blue stragglers., Accepted to AJ; 12 pages, 8 figures

Models of stellar structure and evolution can be constrained using accurate measurements of the parameters of eclipsing binary members of open clusters. Multiple binary stars provide the means to tighten the constraints and, in turn, to improve the precision and accuracy of the age estimate of the host cluster. In the previous two papers of this series, we have demonstrated the use of measurements of multiple eclipsing binaries in the old open cluster NGC6791 to set tighter constraints on the properties of stellar models than was previously possible, thereby improving both the accuracy and precision of the cluster age. We identify and measure the properties of a non-eclipsing cluster member, V56, in NGC\,6791 and demonstrate how this provides additional model constraints that support and strengthen our previous findings. We analyse multi-epoch spectra of V56 from FLAMES in conjunction with the existing photometry and measurements of eclipsing binaries in NGC6971. The parameters of the V56 components are found to be $M_{\rm p}=1.103\pm 0.008 M_{\odot}$ and $M_{\rm s}=0.974\pm 0.007 M_{\odot}$, $R_{\rm p}=1.764\pm0.099 R_{\odot}$ and $R_{\rm s}=1.045\pm0.057 R_{\odot}$, $T_{\rm eff,p}=5447\pm125$ K and $T_{\rm eff,s}=5552\pm125$ K, and surface [Fe/H]=$+0.29\pm0.06$ assuming that they have the same abundance. The derived properties strengthen our previous best estimate of the cluster age of $8.3\pm0.3$ Gyr and the mass of stars on the lower red giant branch (RGB), which is $M_{\rm RGB} = 1.15\pm0.02M_{\odot}$ for NGC6791. We present and analyse 120 spectroscopic binary and triple cluster members of the old (4 Gyr) open cluster M67 (NGC 2682). As a cornerstone of stellar astrophysics, M67 is a key cluster in the WIYN Open Cluster Study (WOCS); radial-velocity (RV) observations of M67 are ongoing and extend back over 45 years, incorporating data from seven different telescopes, and allowing us to detect binaries with orbital periods, Comment: Accepted for publication in AJ; 13 figures, 7 tables

We present a study of the bright detached eclipsing main sequence binary WOCS 11028 (Sanders 617) in the open cluster M67. Although the binary has only one eclipse per orbital cycle, we show that the masses of the stars can be derived very precisely thanks to a strong constraint on the orbital inclination: $M_A = 1.222\pm0.006 M_\odot$ and $M_B = 0.909\pm0.004 M_\odot$. We use a spectral energy distribution fitting method to derive characteristics of the component stars in lieu of the precise radii that would normally be derived from a doubly-eclipsing binary. The deconvolution of the SEDs reveals that the brighter component of the binary is at the faint turnoff point for the cluster -- a distinct evolutionary point that occurs after the convective core has been established and while the star is in the middle of its movement toward lower surface temperature, before the so-called hook at the end of main sequence. The measurements are in distinct disagreement with evolution models at solar metallicity: higher metal abundances are needed to reproduce the characteristics of WOCS 11028 A. We discuss the changes to model physics that are likely to be needed to address the discrepancies. The clearest conclusions are that diffusion is probably necessary to reconcile spectroscopic abundances of M67 stars with the need for higher metallicity models, and that reduced strength convective overshooting is occurring for stars at the turnoff. At super-solar bulk metallicity, various indicators agree on a cluster age between about 3.5 and 4.0 Gyr., Comment: 31 pages, 20 figures, accepted for AJ

The blue-straggler binary WOCS 5379 is a member of the old (6-7 Gyr) open cluster NGC 188. WOCS 5379 comprises a blue straggler star with a white dwarf companion in a 120-day eccentric orbit. Combined with the orbital period, this helium white dwarf is evidence of previous mass transfer by a red giant. Detailed models of the system evolution from a progenitor main-sequence binary, including mass transfer, are made using the Modules for Experiments in Stellar Astrophysics (MESA). Both of the progenitor stars are evolved in the simulation. WOCS 5379 is well reproduced with a primary star of initial mass 1.19 $M_{\odot}$, whose core becomes the white dwarf. The secondary star initially is 1.01 $M_{\odot}$. 300 Myr ago, the secondary finished receiving mass from the donor, having moved beyond the NGC 188 turnoff as a 1.20 $M_{\odot}$ blue straggler. The successful model has a mass transfer efficiency of 22\%. This non-conservative mass transfer is key to expanding the orbit fast enough to permit stable mass transfer. Even so, the mass transfer begins with a short unstable phase, during which half of the accreted mass is transferred. With increasing mass, the secondary evolves from a radiative core to a convective core. The final blue straggler interior is remarkably similar to a 2.1 Gyr-old 1.21 $M_{\odot}$ main-sequence star at the same location in the HR diagram. The white dwarf effective temperature is also reproduced, but the modeled white dwarf mass of 0.33 $M_{\odot}$ is smaller than the measured mass of 0.42 $M_{\odot}$., Comment: 17 pages, 16 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

We present time-series, high-resolution optical spectroscopy of the eccentric T Tauri binary TWA 3A. Our analysis focuses on variability in the strength and structure of the accretion tracing emission lines H alpha and He I 5876A. We find emission line strengths to display the same orbital-phase dependent behavior found with time-series photometry, namely, bursts of accretion near periastron passages. Such bursts are in good agreement with numerical simulations of young eccentric binaries. During accretion bursts, the emission of He I 5876A consistently traces the velocity of the primary star. After removing a model for the system's chromospheric emission, we find the primary star typically emits ~70% of the He I accretion flux. We interpret this result as evidence for circumbinary accretion streams that preferentially feed the TWA 3A primary. This finding is in contrast to most numerical simulations, which predict the secondary should be the dominant accretor in a binary system. Our results may be consistent with a model in which the precession of an eccentric circumbinary disk gap alternates between preferentially supplying mass to the primary and secondary., 29 pages, 16 figures, AJ, accepted

Recent studies show that the majority of blue straggler stars (BSSs) in old open clusters are formed through mass transfer from an evolved star onto a main-sequence companion, resulting in a BSS and white dwarf (WD) in a binary system. We present constraints on the mass transfer histories of two BSS-WD binaries in the open cluster NGC 188, using WD temperatures and surface gravities measured with HST COS far-ultraviolet spectroscopy. Adopting a Gaia-based cluster distance of $1847\pm107$ pc, we determine that one system, WOCS 4540, formed through Case C mass transfer resulting in a CO-core white dwarf with $T_{\text{eff}}=17000^{+140}_{-200}$ K and a $\log g=7.80^{+0.06}_{-0.06}$, corresponding to a mass of $0.53^{+0.03}_{-0.03}$ $M_{\odot}$ and a cooling age of $105^{+6}_{-5}$ Myr. The other system, WOCS 5379, formed through Case B mass transfer resulting in a He-core white dwarf with $T_{\text{eff}}=15500^{+170}_{-150}$ K and a $\log g=7.50^{+0.06}_{-0.05}$, corresponding to a mass of $0.42^{+0.02}_{-0.02}$ $M_{\odot}$ and an age of $250^{+20}_{-20}$ Myr. The WD parameters are consistent across four different cluster distance assumptions. We determine possible progenitor binary systems with a grid of accretion models using MESA, and investigate whether these systems would lead to stable or unstable mass transfer. WOCS 4540 likely resulted from stable mass transfer during periastron passage in an eccentric binary system, while WOCS 5379 challenges our current understanding of the expected outcomes for mass transfer from red giant branch stars. We introduce the stellar sample of the WIYN Open Cluster Study radial-velocity survey for the rich open cluster NGC 7789 (1.6 Gyr, [Fe/H] = +0.02). This sample lies within an 18$'$ circular radius from the cluster center (10 pc in projection, or about 2 core radii), and includes giants, red-clump stars, blue stragglers, red stragglers, sub-subgiants, and main-sequence stars down to one mag below the turnoff. Our survey began in 2005 and comprises more than 9,000 radial-velocity measurements from the Hydra Multi-Object Spectrograph on the WIYN 3.5m telescope. We identify 564 likely cluster members and present the orbital solutions for 83 cluster binary stars with periods between 1.45$\,$d and 4200$\,$d. From the main-sequence binary solutions we fit a circularization period of 8.22$^{+3.51}_{-1.35}\,$d. We calculate an incompleteness-corrected main-sequence binary frequency of 31% $\pm$ 3% for binaries with periods less than 10$^{4}$ days, similar to other WOCS open clusters of all ages. We detect a blue straggler binary frequency of 31% $\pm$ 15%, consistent with the similarly aged cluster NGC 6819., 47 pages, 16 figures. Submitted to AJ

For a sample of 38 Galactic globular clusters (GCs), we confront the observed distributions of blue straggler (BS) proper motions and masses (derived from isochrone fitting) from the BS catalog of Simunovic & Puzia with theoretical predictions for each of the two main competing BS formation mechanisms. These are mass transfer from an evolved donor on to a main-sequence (MS) star in a close binary system, and direct collisions involving MS stars during binary encounters. We use the \texttt{FEWBODY} code to perform simulations of single-binary and binary-binary interactions. This provides collisional velocity and mass distributions for comparison to the observed distributions. Most clusters are consistent with BSs derived from a dynamically relaxed population, supportive of the binary mass-transfer scenario. In a few clusters, including all the post-core collapse clusters in our sample, the collisional velocities provide the best fit., 10 pages, 8 figures, 1 table; accepted for publication in MNRAS

The open cluster M67 offers the unique opportunity to measure rotation periods for solar-age stars across a range of masses, potentially filling a critical gap in the understanding of angular momentum loss in older main sequence stars. The observation of M67 by NASA K2 Campaign 5 provided light curves with high enough precision to make this task possible, albeit challenging, as the pointing instability, 75d observation window, crowded field, and typically low-amplitude signals mean determining accurate rotation periods on the order of 25 - 30d is inherently difficult. Lingering, non-astrophysical signals with power at >25d found in a set of Campaign 5 A and F stars compounds the problem. To achieve a quantitative understanding of the best-case scenario limits for reliable period detection imposed by these inconveniences, we embarked on a comprehensive set of injection tests, injecting 120,000 sinusoidal signals with periods ranging from 5 to 35d and amplitudes from 0.05% to 3.0% into real Campaign 5 M67 light curves processed using two different pipelines. We attempted to recover the signals using a normalized version of the Lomb-Scargle periodogram and setting a detection threshold. We find that while the reliability of detected periods is high, the completeness (sensitivity) drops rapidly with increasing period and decreasing amplitude, maxing at 15% recovery rate for the solar case (i.e. 25d period, 0.1% amplitude). This study highlights the need for caution in determining M67 rotation periods from Campaign 5 data, but this can be extended to other clusters observed by K2 and, soon, TESS., 55 pages, 22 figures, published by ApJ

We present an analysis of a slightly eccentric ($e=0.05$), partially eclipsing long-period ($P = 69.73$ d) main sequence binary system (WOCS 12009, Sanders 1247) in the benchmark old open cluster M67. Using Kepler K2 and ground-based photometry along with a large set of new and reanalyzed spectra, we derived highly precise masses ($1.111\pm0.015$ and $0.748\pm0.005 M_\odot$) and radii ($1.071\pm0.008\pm0.003$ and $0.713\pm0.019\pm0.026 R_\odot$, with statistical and systematic error estimates) for the stars. The radius of the secondary star is in agreement with theory. The primary, however, is approximately $15\%$ smaller than reasonable isochrones for the cluster predict. Our best explanation is that the primary star was produced from the merger of two stars, as this can also account for the non-detection of photospheric lithium and its higher temperature relative to other cluster main sequence stars at the same $V$ magnitude. To understand the dynamical characteristics (low measured rotational line broadening of the primary star and the low eccentricity of the current binary orbit), we believe that the most probable (but not the only) explanation is the tidal evolution of a close binary within a primordial triple system (possibly after a period of Kozai-Lidov oscillations), leading to merger approximately 1Gyr ago. We determine the properties of the binary star V106 in the old open cluster NGC6791. We identify the system to be a blue straggler cluster member by using a combination of ground-based and Kepler photometry and multi-epoch spectroscopy. The properties of the primary component are found to be $M_{\rm p}\sim1.67 \rm M_{\odot}$, more massive than the cluster turn-off, with $R_{\rm p}\sim1.91 \rm R_{\odot}$ and $T_{\rm eff}=7110\pm100$ K. The secondary component is highly oversized and overluminous for its low mass with $M_{\rm s}\sim0.182 \rm M_{\odot}$, $R_{\rm s}\sim0.864 \rm R_{\odot}$ and $T_{\rm eff}=6875\pm200$ K. We identify this secondary star as a bloated (proto) extremely low-mass helium white dwarf. These properties of V106 suggest that it represents a typical Algol-paradox system and that it evolved through a mass-transfer phase which provides insight into its past evolution. We present a detailed binary stellar evolution model for the formation of V106 using the MESA code and find that the mass-transfer phase only ceased about 40 Myr ago. Due to the short orbital period (P=1.4463 d) another mass-transfer phase is unavoidable once the current primary star evolves towards the red giant phase. We argue that V106 will evolve through a common-envelope phase within the next 100 Myr and merge to become a single over-massive giant. The high mass will make it appear young for its true age, which is revealed by the cluster properties. Therefore, V106 is potentially a prototype progenitor of old field giants masquerading as young., Comment: 12 pages, 7 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

Sub-subgiants are stars observed to be redder than normal main-sequence stars and fainter than normal subgiant (and giant) stars in an optical color-magnitude diagram. The red straggler stars, which lie redward of the red giant branch, may be related and are often grouped together with the sub-subgiants in the literature. These stars defy our standard theory of single-star evolution, and are important tests for binary evolution and stellar collision models. In total, we identify 65 sub-subgiants and red stragglers in 16 open and globular star clusters from the literature; 50 of these, including 43 sub-subgiants, pass our strict membership selection criteria (though the remaining sources may also be cluster members). In addition to their unique location on the color-magnitude diagram, we find that at least 58% (25/43) of sub-subgiants in this sample are X-ray sources with typical 0.5-2.5 keV luminosities of order 10^30 - 10^31 erg/s. Their X-ray luminosities and optical-to-X-ray flux ratios are similar to those of RS CVn active binaries. At least 65% (28/43) of the sub-subgiants in our sample are variables, 21 of which are known to be radial-velocity binaries. As part of our study of the old (~2.5 Gyr) open cluster NGC 6819 in the Kepler field, we present photometric (Kepler and ground-based BVRcIc) and spectroscopic observations of the detached eclipsing binary WOCS 24009 (Auner 665; KIC 5023948) with a short orbital period of 3.6 days. WOCS 24009 is a triple-lined system, and we verify that the brightest star is physically orbiting the eclipsing binary using radial velocities and eclipse timing variations. The eclipsing binary components have masses M_B =1.090+/-0.010 Msun and M_C =1.075+/-0.013 Msun, and radii R_B =1.095+/-0.007 Rsun and R_C =1.057+/-0.008 Rsun. The bright non-eclipsing star resides at the cluster turnoff, and ultimately its mass will directly constrain the turnoff mass: our preliminary determination is M_A =1.251+/-0.057 Msun. A careful examination of the light curves indicates that the fainter star in the eclipsing binary undergoes a very brief period of total eclipse, which enables us to precisely decompose the light of the three stars and place them in the color-magnitude diagram. We also present improved analysis of two previously discussed detached eclipsing stars in NGC 6819 (WOCS 40007 and WOCS 23009) en route to a combined determination of the cluster's distance modulus (m-M)_V=12.38+/-0.04. Because this paper significantly increases the number of measured stars in the cluster, we can better constrain the age of the color-magnitude diagram to be 2.21+/-0.10+/-0.20 Gyr. Additionally, using all measured eclipsing binary star masses and radii, we constrain the age to 2.38+/-0.05+/-0.22 Gyr. We present a direct N-body simulation modeling the evolution of the old (7 Gyr) open cluster NGC 188. This is the first N-body open cluster simulation whose initial binary population is directly defined by observations of a specific open cluster: M35 (150 Myr). We compare the simulated color-magnitude diagram at 7 Gyr to that of NGC 188, and discuss the blue stragglers produced in the simulation. We compare the solar-type main sequence binary period and eccentricity distributions of the simulation to detailed observations of similar binaries in NGC 188. These results demonstrate the importance of detailed observations in guiding N-body open cluster simulations. Finally, we discuss the implications of a few discrepancies between the NGC 188 model and observations and suggest a few methods for bringing N-body open cluster simulations into better agreement with observations., Contributed talk at IAUS 266 'Star clusters: basic galactic building blocks', R. de Grijs and J.R.D. This three-year period has seen considerable activity in the Commission, with a wide range of applications of radial velocities as well as a significant push toward higher precision. The latter has been driven in large part by the exciting research on extrasolar planets. This field is now on the verge of detecting Earth-mass bodies around nearby stars, as demonstrated by recent work summarized below, and radial velocities continue to play a central role.

We report the discovery of a pre-main-sequence, low-mass, double-lined, spectroscopic, eclipsing binary in the Orion star-forming region. We present our observations including radial velocities derived from optical high-resolution spectroscopy, and present an orbit solution that permits the determination of precise empirical masses for both components of the system. We measure that Par 1802 is composed of two equal mass (0.39+-0.03, 0.40+-0.03 Msun) stars in a circular, 4.7 day orbit. There is strong evidence, such as the system exhibiting strong Li lines and a center-of-mass velocity consistent with cluster membership, that this system is a member of the Orion star-forming region and quite possibly the Orion Nebula Cluster, and therefore has an age of only a few million years. As there are currently only a few empirical mass and radius measurements for low-mass, PMS stars, this system presents an interesting test for the predictions of current theoretical models of pre-main sequence stellar evolution., 21 pages, 6 figures, 2 tables; Fig 2 caption edited

Yellow straggler stars (YSSs) fall above the subgiant branch in optical color-magnitude diagrams, between the blue stragglers and the red giants. YSSs may represent a population of evolved blue stragglers, but none have the direct and precise mass and radius measurements needed to determine their evolutionary states and formation histories. Here we report the first asteroseismic mass and radius measurements of such a star, the yellow straggler S1237 in the open cluster M67. We apply asteroseismic scaling relations to a frequency analysis of the Kepler K2 light curve and find a mass of 2.9 $\pm$ 0.2 M$_{\odot}$ and a radius of 9.2 $\pm$ 0.2 R$_{\odot}$. This is more than twice the mass of the main- sequence turnoff in M67, suggesting S1237 is indeed an evolved blue straggler. S1237 is the primary in a spectroscopic binary. We update the binary orbital solution and use spectral energy distribution (SED) fitting to constrain the color-magnitude diagram (CMD) location of the secondary star. We find that the secondary is likely an upper main-sequence star near the turnoff, but a slightly hotter blue straggler companion is also possible. We then compare the asteroseismic mass of the primary to its mass from CMD fitting, finding the photometry implies a mass and radius more than 2$\sigma$ below the asteroseismic measurement. Finally, we consider formation mechanisms for this star and suggest that S1237 may have formed from dynamical encounters resulting in stellar collisions or a binary merger.

In an optical color-magnitude diagram sub-subgiants (SSGs) lie red of the main sequence and fainter than the base of the red giant branch in a region not easily populated by standard stellar-evolution pathways. In this paper, we present multi-epoch radial velocities for five SSG candidates in the old and metal-rich open cluster NGC 6791 (8 Gyr, [Fe/H] = +0.30). From these data we are able to make three-dimensional kinematic membership determinations and confirm four SSG candidates to be likely cluster members. We also identify three member SSGs as short-period binary systems and present their orbital solutions. These are the first SSGs with known three-dimensional kinematic membership, binary status, and orbital parameters since the two SSGs in M67 studied by Mathieu et al. 2003. We also remark on the other properties of these stars including photometric variability, H$\alpha$ emission, and X-ray luminosity. The membership confirmation of these SSGs in NGC 6791 strengthens the case that SSGs are a new class of nonstandard stellar evolution products, and that a physical mechanism must be found that explains the evolutionary paths of these stars., Comment: 11 pages, 7 figures

Observations of stellar clusters have had a tremendous impact in forming our understanding of stellar evolution. The open cluster M67 has a particularly important role as a calibration benchmark for stellar evolution theory due to its near solar composition and age. As a result, it has been observed extensively, including attempts to detect solar-like oscillations in its main sequence and red giant stars. However, any asteroseismic inference has so far remained elusive due to the difficulty in measuring these extremely low amplitude oscillations. Here we report the first unambiguous detection of solar-like oscillations in the red giants of M67. We use data from the Kepler ecliptic mission, K2, to measure the global asteroseismic properties. We find a model-independent seismic-informed distance of 816+/-11pc, or (m-M)o=9.57+/-0.03mag, an average red-giant mass of 1.36+/-0.01Msun, in agreement with the dynamical mass from an eclipsing binary near the cluster turn-off, and ages of individual stars compatible with isochrone fitting. We see no evidence of strong mass loss on the red giant branch. We also determine seismic log g of all the cluster giants with a typical precision of ~0.01dex. Our results generally show good agreement with independent methods and support the use of seismic scaling relations to determine global properties of red giant stars with near solar metallicity. The extensive stellar radial-velocity surveys of the WIYN Open Cluster Study now allow comprehensive studies of the solar-type hard-binary populations in open clusters as a function of age. We first describe an empirical “initial” hard-binary population as derived from the young open cluster NGC 2168 (M35). Given the limited analyses so far, the cluster binary population is indistinguishable from that of the field. We then compare the hard-binary population in the old open cluster NGC 188 to the binary population in the sophisticated N-body simulations of the old cluster M67 by Hurley et al. The binary populations in the cluster and the simulation show significant differences in binary frequency and fraction of circularized binaries, while otherwise showing similar orbital eccentricity distributions. Since the simulations were designed to match the encounter products in M67, such as blue stragglers, the large reduction in binary fraction indicated by the empirical results likely will also require changes in the simulation physics producing blue stragglers and other anomalous stars arising from stellar dynamics. We present three case studies of stars in open clusters which very likely are products of dynamical encounters between binaries and either single stars or other binaries: the M67 blue straggler S1082, the M67 sub-subgiant S1113, and the horizontal branch star 6819-3002 in the intermediate-age open cluster NGC 6819. Finally, we remind the reader of recent empirical results on the rates of tidal interactions, using tidal circularization periods in open clusters. Every indication is that current theories underestimate the effectiveness of tidal circularization, a result that need to be incorporated into dynamical simulations of dense stellar systems.

The newly discovered brown-dwarf eclipsing binary 2MASS J05352184-0546085 provides a unique laboratory for testing the predictions of theoretical models of brown-dwarf formation and evolution. The finding that the lower-mass brown dwarf in this system is hotter than its higher-mass companion represents a challenge to brown-dwarf evolutionary models, none of which predict this behavior. Here we present updated determinations of the basic physical properties of 2M0535-05, bolstering the surprising reversal of temperatures with mass in this system. We compare these measurements with widely used brown-dwarf evolutionary tracks, and find that the temperature reversal can be explained by some models if the components of 2M0535-05 are mildly non-coeval, possibly consistent with dynamical simulations of brown-dwarf formation. Alternatively, a strong magnetic field on the higher-mass brown dwarf might explain its anomalously low surface temperature, consistent with emerging evidence that convection is suppressed in magnetically active, low-mass stars. The presence of close (≲ 0.1 AU) stellar companions must greatly alter the circumstellar environment of classical T Tauri stars, including severe truncation if not elimination of circumstellar disks. It is thus remarkable how little impact the presence of a close companion has on our observable diagnostics for accretion and outflow. Emission line shapes, degrees of continuum veiling, and spectral energy distributions are all indistinguishable between single classical T Tauri stars and classical T Tauri close binaries. Some of the most classical T Tauri stars that laid the foundation for our single-star accretion-disk paradigm have turned out to have close companions. Periodicities in spectral signatures are suggestive of the presence of accretion flows from circumbinary disks to the circumstellar regions; the subsequent flow of material through the circumstellar region to the stellar surface in the presence of a stellar magnetosphere is unstudied. Observations of stellar rotation distributions in close binaries suggest that inner disk regions may act to regulate stellar angular momentum.

We present 98 spectroscopic binary orbits resulting from our ongoing radial-velocity survey of the old (7 Gyr) open cluster NGC 188. All but 13 are high-probability cluster members based on both radial-velocity and proper-motion membership analyses. Fifteen of these member binaries are double lined. We present results of a Hubble Space Telescope far-ultraviolet (FUV) survey searching for white dwarf (WD) companions to blue straggler stars (BSSs) in open cluster NGC 188. The majority of NGC 188 BSSs (15 of 21) are single-lined binaries with properties suggestive of mass-transfer formation via Roche lobe overflow, specifically through an asymptotic giant branch star transferring mass to a main sequence secondary, yielding a BSS binary with a WD companion. In NGC 188, a BSS formed by this mechanism within the past 400 Myr will have a WD companion hot and luminous enough to be directly detected as a FUV photometric excess with HST. Comparing expected BSS FUV emission to observed photometry reveals four BSSs with WD companions above 12,000 K (younger than 250 Myr) and three WD companions with temperatures between 11,000-12,000 K. These BSS+WD binaries all formed through recent mass transfer. The location of the young BSSs in an optical color-magnitude diagram (CMD) indicates that distance from the zero-age main sequence does not necessarily correlate with BSS age. There is no clear CMD separation between mass transfer-formed BSSs and those likely formed through other mechanisms, such as collisions. The seven detected WD companions place a lower limit on the mass-transfer formation frequency of 33%. We consider other possible formation mechanisms by comparing properties of the BSS population to theoretical predictions. We conclude that 14 BSS binaries likely formed from mass transfer, resulting in an inferred mass-transfer formation frequency of approximately 67%., 13 pages, 6 figures, accepted to the Astrophysical Journal

(Abridged) We present results from 13776 radial-velocity (RV) measurements of 1278 candidate members of the old (4 Gyr) open cluster M67 (NGC 2682). The measurements are the results of a long-term survey that includes data from seven telescopes with observations for some stars spanning over 40 years. For narrow-lined stars, RVs are measured with precisions ranging from about 0.1 to 0.8 km/s. The combined stellar sample reaches from the brightest giants in the cluster down to about 4 magnitudes below the main-sequence turnoff (V = 16.5), covering a mass range of about 1.34 MSun to 0.76 MSun. Spatially, the sample extends to a radius of 30 arcmin (7.4 pc in projection at a distant of 850 pc or 6-7 core radii). We find M67 to have a mean RV of +33.64 km/s (with an internal precision of +/- 0.03 km/s). For stars with >=3 measurements, we derive RV membership probabilities and identify RV variables, finding 562 cluster members, 142 of which show significant RV variability. We use these cluster members to construct a color-magnitude diagram and identify a rich sample of stars that lie far from the standard single star isochrone, including the well-known blue stragglers, sub-subgiants and yellow giants. These exotic stars have a binary frequency of (at least) 80%, more than three times that detected for stars in the remainder of the sample. We confirm that the cluster is mass segregated, finding the binaries to be more centrally concentrated than the single stars in our sample at the 99.8% confidence level. The blue stragglers are centrally concentrated as compared to the solar-type main-sequence single stars in the cluster at the 99.7% confidence level. Accounting for both measurement precision and undetected binaries, we derive a RV dispersion in M67 of 0.59 +0.07 -0.06 km/s, which yields a virial mass for the cluster of 2100 +610 -550 MSun. Observations suggest that stars lose appreciable angular momentum prior to reaching the main sequence. Two principal spin-down mechanisms have been proposed. One is removal of angular momentum by magnetized winds or jets; the other is transfer of angular momentum from the star to its accretion disk through the effects of magnetic fields. In the latter case, spin evolution occurs due to both mass accretion along field lines and torques resulting from coupling of the stellar magnetic field to the disk. In this paper we study the latter torques in the context of a magnetic field varying in time. We find that magnetic variability reduces the efficiency with which the field can wind up, somewhat widening the region of magnetic coupling. Nonetheless, the steady state result—that magnetic torques can be applied only within a thin annulus around the corotation radius—is little changed for what we believe to be realistic physical conditions. These results are generally applicable to disk accretion onto magnetized bodies.

Brown dwarfs are so-called failed stars that have insufficient mass to sustain nuclear reactions but are too massive to be planets. From this in-between position, brown dwarfs offer unique insights into the nature and origins of both stars and planets. Until now it has not been possible to measure the fundamental physical properties of brown dwarfs directly. But with the discovery of two young brown dwarfs in an eclipsing binary system in the Orion Nebula star-forming region, it has been possible to measure the mass and radius of two in one go. Surprisingly, the less-massive brown dwarf is the hotter of the pair; a finding that runs contrary to the predictions of all current theoretical models of coeval brown dwarfs. This might mean that the two brown dwarfs did not form at the same time, but got together in the recent past. The discovery of a brown-dwarf eclipsing binary system presents a puzzle, as despite both objects having large radii in accordance with current theory the less-massive brown dwarf is the hotter of the pair, contrary to theoretical predictions. Brown dwarfs are considered to be ‘failed stars’ in the sense that they are born with masses between the least massive stars (0.072 solar masses, M⊙)1 and the most massive planets (∼0.013M⊙)2; they therefore serve as a critical link in our understanding of the formation of both stars and planets3. Even the most fundamental physical properties of brown dwarfs remain, however, largely unconstrained by direct measurement. Here we report the discovery of a brown-dwarf eclipsing binary system, in the Orion Nebula star-forming region, from which we obtain direct measurements of mass and radius for these newly formed brown dwarfs. Our mass measurements establish both objects as brown dwarfs, with masses of 0.054 ± 0.005M⊙ and 0.034 ± 0.003M⊙. At the same time, with radii relative to the Sun's of 0.669 ± 0.034R⊙ and 0.511 ± 0.026R⊙, these brown dwarfs are more akin to low-mass stars in size. Such large radii are generally consistent with theoretical predictions for young brown dwarfs in the earliest stages of gravitational contraction4,5. Surprisingly, however, we find that the less-massive brown dwarf is the hotter of the pair; this result is contrary to the predictions of all current theoretical models of coeval brown dwarfs.

We report the discovery of a double-lined, spectroscopic, eclipsing binary in the Orion star-forming region. We analyze the system spectroscopically and photometrically to empirically determine precise, distance-independent masses, radii, effective temperatures, and luminosities for both components. The measured masses for the primary and secondary, accurate to ~1%, are 1.01 Msun and 0.73 Msun, respectively; thus the primary is a definitive pre-main-sequence solar analog, and the secondary is the lowest-mass star yet discovered among pre-main-sequence eclipsing binary systems. We use these fundamental measurements to test the predictions of pre-main-sequence stellar evolutionary tracks. None of the models we examined correctly predict the masses of the two components simultaneously, and we implicate differences between the theoretical and empirical effective temperature scales for this failing. All of the models predict the observed slope of the mass-radius relationship reasonably well, though the observations tend to favor models with low convection efficiencies. Indeed, considering our newly determined mass measurements together with other dynamical mass measurements of pre-main-sequence stars in the literature, as well as measurements of Li abundances in these stars, we show that the data strongly favor evolutionary models with inefficient convection in the stellar interior, even though such models cannot reproduce the properties of the present-day Sun.

We present K-band (2.2 � m) imaging polarimetry that resolves 19 T Tauri binary and multiple systems in the Taurus-Auriga and Scorpius-Ophiuchus star-forming regions. We observed systems with projected separations 1B5–7B 2( � 200–1000 AU) in order to determine the relative orientation of the circumstellar disks in each binary system. Scattered light from these disks is polarized, allowing us to deduce the position angle of the disk on the sky from the position angle of polarization even though our observations do not resolve the disks themselves. We detected measurable polarization (typically 0.5%–2%, with typical uncertainty 0.1%) from both stars in 14 of the systems observed. In eight of the nine binary systems, the two stars’ polarization position angles are within 30 � of each other, inconsistent with random orientations. In contrast, the five triple and quadruple systems appear to have random disk orientations when comparing the polarization position angles of the widest pair in the system; the close pairs are unresolved in all but one system. Our observations suggest that disks in wide (200–1000 AU) binaries are aligned with each other within P20 � but not perfectly coplanar. However, we cannot conclusively rule out random relative disk orientations if the observed polarizations are significantly contaminated by interstellar polarization. Even in the presence of interstellar polarization our observations securely exclude coplanar disks. These results provide constraints on possible binary formation mechanisms if the observed orientations are primordial. On the other hand, models of disk-binary interactions indicate that the disks may have had time to decrease their relative inclinations since formation. If the common orientation of the disks in these binaries is a tracer of the binary orbital plane, then our results also have significance for the stability of planetary orbits, suggesting that planetary systems in wide binaries should be stable over 10 9 yr timescales. We present an ongoing study on tidal interactions in late-type close binary stars. New results on tidal circularization are combined with existing data to test and constrain theoretical predictions of tidal circularization in the pre-main-sequence (PMS) phase and throughout the main-sequence phase of stellar evolution. Current data suggest that tidal circularization during the PMS phase sets the tidal cutoff period for binary populations younger than ~ 1 Gyr. Binary populations older than ~ 1 Gyr show increasing tidal cutoff periods with age, consistent with active main-sequence tidal circularization.

We report preliminary results of a radial velocity study of the old open cluster NGC 752 using an ensemble mean approach with Hydra multi-fiber spectroscopy on the 3.5-m WIYN telescope. The goal is to detect the higher amplitude extra-solar planetary systems and brown dwarf binaries that might reside in the cluster. The oscillation modes of mid-F stars at the redward edge of the instability strip can also be observed. The observation of NGC 752 is the first step in an ongoing study of a variety of clusters with different ages and metallicities.

We present techniques for obtaining presision astrometry using old photographic plates from assorted large-aperture reflectors in combination with recent CCD Mosaic Imager frames. At the core of this approach is a transformation of plate/CCD coordinates into a previously constructed astrometric reference frame around the open cluster NGC 188. Our primary result is a new catalog of proper motions and positions for 7812 objects down to V=21 in the 0.75 square degree area around NGC 188. The precision for well-measured stars is 0.15 mas/yr for proper motions and 2 mas for positions on the system of the Tycho-2 catalog. The sum of membership probabilities indicates that NGC 188 contains 1050 stars down to V=21. Comprehensive lists of the candidate blue stragglers and red giants substantially enlarge the number of such stars known in NGC 188. We have also obtained a small correction to the proper motions from the mean `motion' of background galaxies. (Abridged), Comment: 37 pages, 10 figures. We present an analysis of 32 high-resolution echelle spectra of the pre-main sequence spectroscopic binary AK Sco obtained during 1998 and 2000, as well as a total of 72 photoelectric radial-velocity observations from the period 1986-1994. These data allow considerable improvement of the period and other orbital parameters of AK Sco. Our analysis also includes eight series of photometric observations in the uvby and Geneva seven-color systems from 1987, 1989, 1990, 1992, 1994 and 1997. No eclipses or other periodic variations are seen in the photometry, but the well-determined HIPPARCOS parallax allows us to constrain the orbital inclination of the system to the range 65 < i< 70, leading to the following physical parameters for the two near-identical stars: M= 1:35 0:07 M, R= 1:59 0:35 R ,a ndv sin i= 18:5 1: 0k m s 1 . Disk models have been fit to the spectral energy distribution of AK Sco from 350 nm to 1100 m. The above stellar parameters permit a consistent solution with an inner rim temperature of 1250 K, instead of the usual 1500 K corresponding to the dust evaporation temperature. Dynamical eects due to tidal interaction of the binary system are supposed to be responsible for pushing the inner disk radius outwards. Combining simultaneous photometric and spectroscopic data sets allows us to compute the dust obscuration in front of each star at several points over the orbit. The results demonstrate the existence of substructure at scales of just a single stellar diameter, and also that one side of the orbit is more heavily obscured than the other. The spectrum of AK Sco exhibits emission and absorption lines that show substantial variety and variability in shape. The accretion-related lines may show both outflow and infall signatures. The system displays variations at the binary orbital period in both the photospheric and accretion-related line intensities and equivalent widths, although with appreciable scatter. The periodic variations in the blue and red wing of H are almost 180 out of phase. We find no evidence of enhanced accretion near the periastron passage in AK Sco as expected theoretically and observed previously in DQ Tau, a similarly young binary system with a mass ratio near unity and an eccentric orbit. The H equivalent width displays rather smooth variations at the stellar period, peaking around phases 0.6-0.7, far away from periastron where theory expects the maximum accretion rate to occur.

The evolution of young star clusters and associations are driven in part by dynamical processes. In this chapter we introduce key concepts of stellar dynamical processes within young stellar systems and star clusters, especially relevant timescales, equipartition and mass segregation, and the evolution of dynamical systems. We also discuss recent work on the effects of stellar collisions as well as implications for cluster dissolution as a result of the dynamical processes previously described.
