Fluorescence lifetime imaging microscopy (FLIM) is a powerful imaging technique that enables the visualization of biological samples at the molecular level by measuring the fluorescence decay rate of fluorescent probes. This provides critical information about molecular interactions, environmental changes, and localization within biological systems. However, creating high-resolution lifetime maps using conventional FLIM systems can be challenging, as it often requires extensive scanning that can significantly lengthen acquisition times. This issue is further compounded in three-dimensional (3D) imaging because it demands additional scanning along the depth axis. To tackle this challenge, we developed a novel computational imaging technique called light field tomographic FLIM (LIFT-FLIM). Our approach allows for the acquisition of volumetric fluorescence lifetime images in a highly data-efficient manner, significantly reducing the number of scanning steps required compared to conventional point-scanning or line-scanning FLIM imagers. Moreover, LIFT-FLIM enables the measurement of high-dimensional data using low-dimensional detectors, which are typically low-cost and feature a higher temporal bandwidth. We demonstrated LIFT-FLIM using a linear single-photon avalanche diode array on various biological systems, showcasing unparalleled single-photon detection sensitivity. Additionally, we expanded the functionality of our method to spectral FLIM and demonstrated its application in high-content multiplexed imaging of lung organoids. LIFT-FLIM has the potential to open up new avenues in both basic and translational biomedical research.

Life cycle analysis has proven a useful method for identifying bottlenecks or critical life stages for animals and to a lesser extent for plants. To determine if life cycle analysis would be useful for endangered Boreal Felt Lichen ( Erioderma pedicellatum), elasticity analysis and a modified Systematic Hazard Analysis of Rare-endangered Plants (SHARP) procedure was used for this lichen species in Nova Scotia, Canada. Both elasticity and SHARP suggest that juvenile recruitment and survival is a critical life stage. So little is known about symbiosis in lichens it is not possible to determine if this is a critical life stage.

Representative bureaucracy and workforce diversity have become central topics in the field of public administration. Although representation and diversity are distinct concepts, public administration researchers often conflate them. This study seeks to provide analytical clarity by outlining and comparing the various conceptual definitions of representation and diversity. We also explain the causal logic of how representation and diversity influence organizational performance. Finally, with South African local government as the research setting, we examine the empirical relationship between these two concepts and explore how different forms of representation and diversity are related to organizational performance.

This paper discusses the aerodynamic analysis and design of a novel, hubless, contra-rotating, rim-driven fan (RDF) device. Rim-driven thruster technology has been used for marine propulsion for decades, yet RDF technology has not been comparably developed for aerospace applications. This paper demonstrates that an innovative two-stage contra-rotating RDF configuration provides the potential for a significant increase in the available thrust and efflux velocity when compared with existing technologies. The analysis was conducted for an RDF device with a relatively small fan diameter of 120 mm. However, the findings of this study can be equally applied to the performance of much larger and more powerful RDF propulsion units. This would also include devices having multiple contra-rotating paired stages, for example, four, six, or more rotors to permit higher-pressure ratios and exhaust airspeeds suitable for large modern aircraft propulsion.

Finite element analysis was conducted to study the stress behaviour in a generic electric high-revolution rimdriven rotor in relation to the number of spokes and rotational speed using the maximum distortion energy failure criterion. The paper analysed the stresses on an electric high-revolution rotor and locate the failure’s potential origins. Upon analysing the FEA results, it is found that the maximum equivalent von-Mises stress is related to the square of revolution in RPM. It is concluded that it is possible to create a general formula that can predict the stresses, simplifying the development stage of an electric rim-driven rotor for high-speed applications.

The reliable characterization of planetary atmospheres with transmission spectroscopy requires realistic modeling of stellar magnetic features, since features that are attributable to an exoplanet atmosphere could instead stem from the host star's magnetic activity. Current retrieval algorithms for analysing transmission spectra rely on intensity contrasts of magnetic features from 1D radiative-convective models. However, magnetic features, especially faculae, are not fully captured by such simplified models. Here we investigate how well such 1D models can reproduce 3D facular contrasts, taking a G2V star as an example. We employ the well established radiative magnetohydrodynamic code MURaM to obtain three-dimensional simulations of the magneto-convection and photosphere harboring a local small-scale-dynamo. Simulations without additional vertical magnetic fields are taken to describe the quiet solar regions, while simulations with initially 100 G, 200 G and 300 G vertical magnetic fields are used to represent different magnetic activity levels. Subsequently, the spectra emergent from the MURaM cubes are calculated with the MPS-ATLAS radiative transfer code. We find that the wavelength dependence of facular contrast from 1D radiative-convective models cannot reproduce facular contrasts obtained from 3D modeling. This has far reaching consequences for exoplanet characterization using transmission spectroscopy, where accurate knowledge of the host star is essential for unbiased inferences of the planetary atmospheric properties., 7 pages, 2 figures, submitted to APJL

We extend the current literature on barriers to women’s entrepreneurship by providing the perspectives of women entrepreneurs’ lived experience of governance and public policies designed to support entrepreneurship, in France and England. The research draws on primary data comprising interviews with 75 French and English women entrepreneurs as well as secondary data. The research suggests that in France the system of governance is relatively more supportive, whereas in England there are less favourable views of bureaucracy and the conditionality of financial policy instruments, which in turn create unintended outcomes. We extend current understandings of gendered public policies and governance. Points for practitioners The public policy and governance context in France offers relatively more support for women entrepreneurs than in England. There is a potential for policy learning in how to support women entrepreneurs. Financial policy instruments such as social welfare payments may affect women entrepreneurship. Bureaucracy creates time and opportunity costs for women entrepreneurs, which have a gendered impact if they are single parents and have dependents.

The quest for lighter and shorter propulsion systems has led to the reduction of axial compressor and fan blade chord-lengths. Theoretical and experimental results show that the geometrical aspect-ratio criterion significantly affects the overall performance of axial flow compressors and fans. In conducting this review, it was found that the experimental results differ from one literature source to another. Highlighting that the way in which blade aspect ratio affects the performance of axial flow compressors and fans is still not fully understood. Nonetheless, the reviewed literature has still proven valuable for compressor and fan design. This paper focuses on creating a review of the available literature relating to how low aspect ratio blades may affect the performance of electrical axial compressors and fans.

In this technical report, we describe how to use TeleSimBox to run a remotely facilitated simulation to connect the facilitator with learners at a distant site. This method was developed to comply with safety measures imposed during the coronavirus disease-19 (COVID-19) pandemic to reduce the risk of viral exposure and transmission. Here, we present one example where a telesimulation naive facilitator was trained as an in-person facilitator to enable the in-situ medical student and resident learners to participate in a pediatric emergency simulation exercise remotely guided by an off-site content expert. The case of neonatal shock was run five times during a half-day emergency department (ED) educational program with one to four participants per session. 14/15 (93%) participants completed evaluations and felt that the simulation met the case learning objectives and that connecting with the remote facilitator was useful for their learning. Feedback from the one newly trained in-person facilitator was that the tool was easy to learn how to use quickly, and the process of connecting with a remote expert was worthwhile for learners. To grab this web-based toolkit off the proverbial shelf and successfully run a telesimulation session from start to finish took approximately one hour; 20 minutes were spent in preparation the day prior and 40 minutes to set up and run the simulations the day of. We believe that this is a low-cost, efficient, and perceived to be an effective method to connect remotely located content experts and learners to engage in a simulation-based education activity when access to in-person resources and personnel is limited.

Background: The ongoing novel coronavirus (COVID-19) global pandemic has resulted in significant levels of morbidity and mortality worldwide, particularly among the elderly and immuno-suppressed groups. Although adequate hand hygiene (HH) behaviour and compliance is widely accepted as being the most effective self-protective measure in preventing the spread of diseases like COVID-19, previous research suggests that normal hand hygiene compliance is poor, but generally improves during a disease pandemic. This research aimed to evaluate the hand hygiene behaviour and compliance of the general public in the initial weeks of the COVID-19 pandemic in Northern Ireland (NI). Methods: This cross-sectional study involved the use of infrared-imaging cameras to observe the hand hygiene behaviour and compliance of the general public when using one set of male and female public restrooms. Results: The findings of this study indicated that the level of hand hygiene compliance of the general public was poor in the initial weeks, with 82.93% overall not washing their hands adequately. Conclusions: Inadequate HH behaviour and compliance may have added significantly to the rapid rate of spread of COVID-19 in the initial weeks of the pandemic in NI. Current public health campaigns do not appear, based on this study, to have the desired impact and may need to be reviewed or re-enforced in order to achieve the levels of hand hygiene compliance required to slow the spread of COVID-19 and other communicable diseases in the future.

Containerised freight is a key component of global and urban trade. Empty containers are a necessary outcome of such trade and have operational costs close to that of full containers yet are not a source of revenue as the latter is. A literature review revealed regional repositioning to be a complex problem due to a multitude of interacting parts and distributed decision making among stakeholders which have conflicting objectives. The goal is to optimise the activities related to urban goods movements and reduce the total social cost of these activities. The purpose of this study is to develop a detailed description and understanding of the empty container movements in Melbourne using a modelling approach designed to represent complex systems. This paper explores the cause and effects of the land-side empty container repositioning. Then the key characteristics of the system were captured into a conceptual model that documents and articulates the logistics processes, interactions, power-relations, problems and potential solutions of the freight system. The conceptual model was translated into a simulation model in the form of an agent-based model. The agent-based model was a proof-of-concept which provided an opportunity to graphically imitate the logistics processes and interactions of the system in a natural, flexible and dynamic way. Empty containers represent a sizeable proportion of logistics activity, however previous studies on container freight operations in Melbourne have tended to focus on commercially valuable, loaded containers - not empty containers. This paper closes the gap in understanding of empty container management in Melbourne as represented in a concept model and agent-based model.

Every year, thousands of people from the UK travel to other countries for work and leisure. Europe, and particularly Spain, is one of the most popular travel destinations for people from the UK. However, it is known that travel to other countries can enhance the risk of communicable disease transmission from person to person, especially when a new one emerges. Adequate hand hygiene behaviour and compliance is widely accepted as being a simple, effective method in preventing the spread of communicable diseases that may be contracted during travel abroad. There is a well-established body of work investigating hand hygiene practice and compliance in community settings, but no recent studies have examined the hand hygiene practice and compliance of the general population when travelling abroad or in a cross-European context. The findings of this study indicated that most UK members of the general population when travelling abroad have a good level of understanding of the importance of adequate hand hygiene practice and compliance and its role regarding communicable disease prevention and control. As such, self-reported levels of compliance were high. Similar findings were made for Spanish members of the general population. However, while self-reported perceptions of adequacy of hand hygiene performance were relatively high, particularly among UK respondents, this was not supported by responses specifically focused on hand hygiene behaviour. However, differences in self-reported adequacy regarding the importance of handwashing versus hand drying, the number of steps that should be followed and the length of time that should be spent washing and drying hands were found for each group. This suggests that self-reported compliance may reflect intention to practice hand hygiene rather than true compliance. It also suggests that there are gaps in knowledge regarding the adequate method of hand hygiene among the cohort as a whole, and indeed these differences may account be a factor in for the high transmission rates of communicable disease when travelling abroad.
