Ag-carbon composite interlayers have been reported to enable Li-free (anodeless) cycling of solid-state batteries. Here, we report structural changes in the Ag-graphite interlayer, showing that on charge, Li intercalates electrochemically into graphite, subsequently reacting chemically with Ag to form Li-Ag alloys. Discharge is not the reverse of charge but rather passes through Li-deficient Li-Ag phases. At higher charging rates, Li intercalation into graphite outpaces the chemical reactions with Ag, delaying the formation of the Li-Ag phases and resulting in more Li metal deposition at the current collector. At and above 2.5 mA·cm−2, Li dendrites are not suppressed. Ag nanoparticles do not suppress dendrites more effectively than does an interlayer of graphite alone. Instead, Ag in the carbon interlayer results in more homogeneous Li and Li-Ag formation on the current collector during charge.

Oxide ions in transition metal oxide cathodes can store charge at high voltage offering a route towards higher energy density batteries. However, upon charging these cathodes, the oxidized oxide ions condense to form molecular O2 trapped in the material. Consequently, the discharge voltage is much lower than charge, leading to undesirable voltage hysteresis. Here we capture the nature of the electron holes on O2− before O2 formation by exploiting the suppressed transition metal rearrangement in ribbon-ordered Na0.6[Li0.2Mn0.8]O2. We show that the electron holes formed are delocalized across the oxide ions coordinated to two Mn (O–Mn2) arranged in ribbons in the transition metal layers. Furthermore, we track these delocalized hole states as they gradually localize in the structure in the form of trapped molecular O2 over a period of days. Establishing the nature of hole states on oxide ions is important if truly reversible high-voltage O-redox cathodes are to be realized.

Summary O-redox in compounds with Li on the transition-metal layers (TML) has recently been attributed to the formation of molecular O2 on charge, trapped in the lattice. Here, we show that a similar process occurs for P2-Na0.67[Mn0.72Mg0.28]O2, which contains Mg2+ on the TML. The molecular O2 is identified by high-resolution RIXS and quantified by magnetometry, showing that it equates to the charge passed. This O2 is trapped in voids that are formed by Mg2+ out-of-plane displacement and Mn4+ in-plane disordering and is then reduced on discharge associated with a large voltage hysteresis. In contrast to compounds containing Li+ in the TML, in which the honeycomb ordering and the high-voltage plateau are irreversibly lost after the first cycle, in P2-Na0.67[Mn0.72Mg0.28]O2, the plateau reappears partially on the second charge due to the partial reversibility of Mn in-plane and Mg out-of-plane migration and the local reformation of the honeycomb ordering.

The energy density of Li-ion batteries can be improved by storing charge at high voltages through the oxidation of oxide ions in the cathode material. However, oxidation of O2− triggers irreversible structural rearrangements in the bulk and an associated loss of the high voltage plateau, which is replaced by a lower discharge voltage, and a loss of O2 accompanied by densification at the surface. Here we consider various models for oxygen redox that are proposed in the literature and then describe a single unified model involving O2− oxidation to form O2, most of which is trapped in the bulk and the remainder of which evolves from the surface. The model extends the O2 formation and evolution at the surface, which is well known and well characterized, into the electrode particle bulk as caged O2 that can be reversibly reduced and oxidized. This converged understanding enables us to propose practical strategies to avoid oxygen-redox-induced instability and provide potential routes towards more reversible, high energy density Li-ion cathodes. Oxygen redox in Li-rich oxide cathodes is of both fundamental and practical interest in Li-ion battery development. Bruce and team examine the current understanding of oxygen-redox processes, especially those concerning O2 formation, and discuss strategies that can harness oxygen redox with suppressed side effects.

In the search for high energy density cathodes for next-generation lithium-ion batteries, the disordered rocksalt oxyfluorides are receiving significant attention due to their high capacity and lower voltage hysteresis compared with ordered Li-rich layered compounds. However, a deep understanding of these phenomena and their redox chemistry remains incomplete. Using the archetypal oxyfluoride, Li2MnO2F, we show that the oxygen redox process in such materials involves the formation of molecular O2 trapped in the bulk structure of the charged cathode, which is reduced on discharge. The molecular O2 is trapped rigidly within vacancy clusters and exhibits minimal mobility unlike free gaseous O2, making it more characteristic of a solid-like environment. The Mn redox process occurs between octahedral Mn3+ and Mn4+ with no evidence of tetrahedral Mn5+ or Mn7+. We furthermore derive the relationship between local coordination environment and redox potential; this gives rise to the observed overlap in Mn and O redox couples and reveals that the onset potential of oxide ion oxidation is determined by the degree of ionicity around oxygen, which extends models based on linear Li-O-Li configurations. This study advances our fundamental understanding of redox mechanisms in disordered rocksalt oxyfluorides, highlighting their promise as high capacity cathodes.

Li-rich cathode materials are potential candidates for next-generation Li-ion batteries. However, they exhibit a large voltage hysteresis on the first charge/discharge cycle, which involves a substantial (up to 1 V) loss of voltage and therefore energy density. For Na cathodes, for example Na0.75[Li0.25Mn0.75]O2, voltage hysteresis can be explained by the formation of molecular O2 trapped in voids within the particles. Here we show that this is also the case for Li1.2Ni0.13Co0.13Mn0.54O2. Resonant inelastic X-ray scattering and 17O magic angle spinning NMR spectroscopy show that molecular O2, rather than O22−, forms within the particles on the oxidation of O2− at 4.6 V versus Li+/Li on charge. These O2 molecules are reduced back to O2− on discharge, but at the lower voltage of 3.75 V, which explains the voltage hysteresis in Li-rich cathodes. 17O magic angle spinning NMR spectroscopy indicates a quantity of bulk O2 consistent with the O-redox charge capacity minus the small quantity of O2 loss from the surface. The implication is that O2, trapped in the bulk and lost from the surface, can explain O-redox. Understanding the severe voltage hysteresis in the first cycle of Li-rich cathodes is essential to realize their full potential in batteries. P. G. Bruce and colleagues report the formation of molecular O2 on charging rather than other oxidized O species is the cause for the voltage hysteresis.

Multivalent cation rechargeable batteries, including those based on Ca, Mg, Al, etc., have attracted considerable interest as candidates for beyond Li-ion batteries. Recent developments have realized promising electrolyte compositions for rechargeable Ca batteries; however, an in-depth understanding of the Ca plating and stripping behavior and the mechanisms by which adverse dendritic growth may occur remains underdeveloped. In this work, via in situ transmission electron microscopy, we have captured the real-time nucleation, growth, and dissolution of Ca and the formation of dead Ca and demonstrated the critical role of current density and the solid-electrolyte interphase layer in controlling the plating morphology. In particular, the interface was found to influence Ca deposition morphology and can lead to Ca dendrite growth under unexpected conditions. These observations allow us to propose a model explaining the preferred conditions for reversible and efficient Ca plating.

PReCIS:: Overhead mounted spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (OCT) enables high-quality imaging of the optic nerve and macula in childhood glaucoma, and is particularly useful when standard tabletop OCT has failed or is not possible. Purpose Tabletop OCT, integral to adult glaucoma management, can be limited in childhood glaucoma patients because of young age, poor cooperation, and/or technical challenges. To address these imaging difficulties, we determined the feasibility and quality of an overhead mounted unit in childhood glaucoma. Secondary aims included evaluation of peripapillary retinal nerve fiber layer (pRNFL), parafoveal total retinal thickness, and parafoveal ganglion cell complex (GCC) thickness. Materials and methods Children and adults with a diagnosis of childhood glaucoma were imaged with an overhead mounted spectral-domain OCT as part of a prospective cross-sectional study. Participants had poor quality or unobtainable tabletop OCT and were scheduled for an examination under anesthesia and/or surgery as part of standard care. Results A total of 88 affected eyes in 60 of 65 (92.3%) enrolled patients (mean age, 5.9±5.9 y; range, 0.2 to 24.5) were successfully imaged. The mean image quality for analyzed scans was 22.9±6.0 dB (n=236 images). Mean values for pRNFL (80.5±31.0 µm; n=86), parafoveal total retinal thickness (301.10±39.9 µm; n=79), and parafoveal GCC thickness (96.0±21.6 µm; n=74) were calculated. Conclusions Overhead mounted OCT allowed high-quality image acquisition and analysis in childhood glaucoma patients unable to be imaged with the tabletop counterpart, presenting an opportunity for improved clinical management and study of childhood glaucoma-related pathophysiology. pRNFL, parafoveal total retinal thickness, and parafoveal GCC thickness were decreased for affected eyes of children under 6 years of age compared with age-matched controls from a companion normative study.

To determine reference values for the peripapillary retinal nerve fiber layer (pRNFL) and macula in children 0-5 years of age.Prospective cross-sectional study.This study was set in a single large academic pediatric ophthalmology practice. Healthy, full-term children 0 to6 years of age presenting for surgery under general anesthesia were prospectively recruited for participation. Excluded were children with systemic neurologic disease, optic nerve or retinal disease (even if unilateral) or any bilateral ocular disease process, and eyes with amblyopia, ocular disease, or spherical equivalent refractive error outside of -3.00 to +8.00 diopters. Following general anesthesia, OCT scans of the optic nerve and retina were acquired using an HRA+OCT Spectralis with Flex module (Heidelberg Engineering). Automated segmentation of the pRNFL and retinal layers was followed by manual correction.Data were obtained from normal eyes of 57 participants (mean age 2.28 ± 1.50 years). Mean global pRNFL thickness was 107.6 ± 10.3 μm. Mean global pRNFL thickness was not dependent on age but showed a negative relationship with axial length (P = .01). The mean total macular volume was 8.56 ± 0.259 mmGlobal pRNFL thickness measurements remain stable over time. Macular volume and thickness values of segmented retinal layers reflect the development of the macula with age.

PURPOSE: To assess macular vasculature in healthy infants and children using OCT angiography (OCTA). DESIGN: Prospective cross-sectional study. PARTICIPANTS: One hundred thirty-five normal maculae of 89 healthy infants and children (mean age, 8.5±5.3 years; range, 9 weeks–17 years) treated at the Duke University Eye Center. METHODS: We imaged 135 maculae of 89 pediatric patients using the standard Spectralis tabletop and investigational Spectralis with Flex module devices, both equipped with investigational OCTA software (Heidelberg Engineering, Heidelberg, Germany). OCT angiography images of the superficial vascular complex (SVC) and deep vascular complex (DVC) were analyzed for foveal avascular zone (FAZ) area and superficial and deep vessel density. We assessed effects of age, gender, race, axial length (AL), and central subfield thickness on FAZ and vessel density. Patients with both eyes imaged were assessed for agreement between the FAZ and vessel densities of the left and right eyes. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: The FAZ area, as well as vessel area density (VAD) and vessel length density (VLD) in the SVC and DVC. RESULTS: The FAZ varied significantly with race; white patients showed a significantly smaller FAZ than black patients (mean difference, 0.11 mm(2); P = 0.004). The FAZ did not vary with age, gender, or AL (P > 0.05). In the SVC, VAD and VLD varied significantly with age (P < 0.001) and AL (R(2) = 0.46; P < 0.001) but not gender (P >0.05). The SVC VLD was significantly different between races and ethnicities (P = 0.037), but VAD was not (P < 0.05). In the DVC, VAD and VLD also varied significantly with age (P < 0.001) and AL (R(2) = 0.46; P < 0.001) but not gender or race (P > 0.05). There was excellent agreement between the right and left eyes for FAZ (intraclass correlation [ICC], 0.97), SVC VLD (ICC, 1.00), and DVC VLD (ICC, 1.00). CONCLUSIONS: Quantitative studies of pediatric perifoveal vasculature should consider age, race, and AL. In eyes with unilateral disease, the perifoveal vasculature in the unaffected eye may be used as a control comparison because there is excellent agreement between eyes.

Oxidation and reduction of the oxide ions in the bulk of cathode materials is a potential route towards increasing the energy density of Li-ion batteries. Here, we present neutron PDF data which demonstrates the presence of short 1.2 Å O-O distances in a charged O-redox cathode material, corresponding to the bond length of molecular O2. This was achieved by collecting our data close to absolute zero (2K), suppressing thermal motion which may have obscured detection by PDF previously. This direct detection of molecular O2trapped in the material by diffraction complements the X-ray spectroscopy studies by e.g. RIXS while avoiding issues of possible beam damage as well as being a bulk average technique.

Inflammation in meninges and/or brain is regularly noticed in red foxes and other wild carnivores during rabies control programs. Despite negative rabies virus (RABV) results, the etiologies of these cases remain unknown. Thus, the aim of this study was to provide an overview of the occurrence of pathogens that may cause diseases in the brains of wild carnivores and pose a risk to humans and other animals. In addition to RABV and canine distemper virus (CDV), a variety of pathogens, including members of Flaviviridae, Bornaviridae, Herpesviridae, Circoviridae, as well as bacteria and parasites can also cause brain lesions. In 2016 and 2017, brain samples of 1,124 wild carnivores were examined by direct fluorescent antibody test for RABV as well as (reverse-transcriptase) quantitative polymerase chain reaction (PCR) for the presence of CDV as part of a monitoring program in Saxony-Anhalt, Germany. Here, we applied similar methods to specifically detect suid herpesvirus 1 (SuHV-1), West Nile virus (WNV), Borna disease virus 1 (BoDV-1), canid alphaherpesvirus 1 (CaHV-1), canine parvovirus type 2 (CPV-2), fox circovirus (FoxCV), and Neospora caninum (N. caninum). Further, bacteriogical examination for the existence of Listeria monocytogenes (L. monocytogenes) and immunohistochemistry of selected cases to detect Toxoplasma gondii (T. gondii) antigen were performed. Of all pathogens studied, CDV was found most frequently (31.05%), followed by FoxCV (6.80%), CPV-2 (6.41%), T. gondii (4/15; 26.67%), nematode larvae (1.51%), L. monocytogenes (0.3%), and various other bacterial pathogens (1.42%). In 68 of these cases (6.05%), multiple pathogen combinations were present simultaneously. However, RABV, WNV, BoDV-1, SuHV-1, CaHV-1, and N. caninum were not detected. The majority of the histopathological changes in 440 animals were inflammation (320/440; 72.73%), predominantly non-suppurative in character (280/320; 87.50%), and in many cases in combination with gliosis, satellitosis, neuronophagia, neuronal necrosis, and/or vacuolization/demyelination, or in single cases with malacia. Thus, it could be shown that wild carnivores in Saxony-Anhalt are carriers mainly for CDV and sometimes also for other, partly zoonotic pathogens. Therefore, the existing monitoring program should be expanded to assess the spill-over risk from wild carnivores to humans and other animals and to demonstrate the role of wild carnivores in the epidemiology of these zoonotic pathogens.

Human monoclonal antibody (mAb) treatments are promising for COVID-19 prevention, post-exposure prophylaxis, or therapy. However, the titer of neutralizing antibodies required for protection against SARS-CoV-2 infection remains poorly characterized. We previously described two potently neutralizing mAbs COV2-2130 and COV2-2381 targeting non-overlapping epitopes on the receptor-binding domain of SARS-CoV-2 spike protein. Here, we engineered the Fc-region of these mAbs with mutations to extend their persistence in humans and reduce interactions with Fc gamma receptors. Passive transfer of individual or combinations of the two antibodies (designated ADM03820) given prophylactically by intravenous or intramuscular route conferred virological protection in a non-human primate (NHP) model of SARS-CoV-2 infection, and ADM03820 potently neutralized SARS-CoV-2 variants of concernin vitro. We defined 6,000 as a protective serum neutralizing antibody titer in NHPs against infection for passively transferred human mAbs that acted by direct viral neutralization, which corresponded to a concentration of 20 μg/mL of circulating mAb.

The recent report of P2–Na2/3Mg0.28Mn0.72O2 (P2-NMM) demonstrated the possibility of utilizing the oxygen redox couple in a layered oxide cathode without the need for alkali ions or vacancies in the transition metal layer. In this work, we report the synthesis of a new P2-type compound, Na2/3Mg1/4Mn7/12Co1/6O2 (P2-NMMC), which exhibits reversible specific capacities as high as 173 mAh g−1 and an improvement of the first cycle voltage hysteresis over P2-NMM. The material was characterised using a combination of ex-situ and operando techniques including X-ray diffraction (XRD), differential electrochemical mass spectrometry (DEMS) and X-ray spectroscopy (XAS) to identify potential sources for this improvement.

Lithium-rich disordered rocksalts such as Li1.3Nb0.3Mn0.4O2 and Li2MnO2F are being investigated as high energy density cathodes for next generation Li-ion batteries. They can support the (de) lithiation of lithium ions over large compositional ranges while preserving the same overall structure. Here, we present a new Ni-rich oxyfluoride cathode, Li2NiO2F, with a disordered rocksalt structure. Li2NiO2F and can deliver a discharge capacity of 200 mAh g−1 at an average voltage of 3.2 V.

The current global COVID-19 pandemic caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) has resulted in a public health crisis with more than 168 million cases reported globally and more than 4.5 million deaths at the time of writing. In addition to the direct impact of the disease, the economic impact has been significant as public health measures to contain or reduce the spread have led to country wide lockdowns resulting in near closure of many sectors of the economy. Antibodies are a principal determinant of the humoral immune response to COVID-19 infections and may have the potential to reduce disease and spread of the virus. The development of monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) represents a therapeutic option that can be produced at large quantity and high quality. In the present study, a mAb combination mixture therapy was investigated for its capability to specifically neutralize SARS-CoV-2. We demonstrate that each of the antibodies bind the spike protein and neutralize the virus, preventing it from infecting cells in anin vitrocell-based assay, including multiple viral variants that are currently circulating in the human population. In addition, we investigated the effects of two different mutations in the Fc portion (YTE and LALA) of the antibody on Fc effector function and the ability to alleviate potential antibody-dependent enhancement of disease. These data demonstrate the potential of a combination of two mAbs that target two different epitopes on the SARS-CoV2 spike protein to provide protection against SARS-CoV-2 infection in humans while extending serum half-life and preventing antibody-dependent enhancement of disease.

Layered Li-rich transition metal oxides undergo O-redox, involving the oxidation of the O2− ions charge compensated by extraction of Li+ ions. Recent results have shown that for 3d transition metal oxides the oxidized O2− forms molecular O2 trapped in the bulk particles. Other forms of oxidised O2− such as O22− or (O–O)n− with long bonds have been proposed, based especially on work on 4 and 5d transition metal oxides, where TM–O bonding is more covalent. Here, we show, using high resolution RIXS that molecular O2 is formed in the bulk particles on O2‒ oxidation in the archetypal Li-rich ruthenates and iridate compounds, Li2RuO3, Li2Ru0.5Sn0.5O3 and Li2Ir0.5Sn0.5O3. The results indicate that O-redox occurs across 3, 4, and 5d transition metal oxides, forming O2, i.e. the greater covalency of the 4d and 5d compounds still favours O2. RIXS and XAS data for Li2IrO3 are consistent with a charge compensation mechanism associated primarily with Ir redox up to and beyond the 5+ oxidation state, with no evidence of O–O dimerization., In this work, authors show that O-redox in 4d and 5d transition metal oxides involves the formation of molecular oxygen trapped in the particles. These results are in accord with observations in 3d oxides and show that the greater covalency of the 4d and 5d oxides does not stabilise peroxo-like species.

Background Human monoclonal antibody (mAb) treatments are promising for COVID-19 prevention or therapy. Conclusions In summary, we demonstrate that neutralizing antibodies with extended half-life and lacking Fc-mediated effector functions are efficient for pre-exposure prophylaxis of SARS-CoV-2 infection in NHPs. These results support clinical development of ADM03820 for COVID-19 prevention. Lithium‐rich transition metal cathodes can deliver higher capacities than stoichiometric materials by exploiting redox reactions on oxygen. However, oxidation of O2− on charging often results in loss of oxygen from the lattice. In the case of Li2MnO3 all the capacity arises from oxygen loss, whereas doping with Ni and/or Co leads to the archetypal O‐redox cathodes Li[Li0.2Ni0.2Mn0.6]O2 and Li[Li0.2Ni0.13Co0.13Mn0.54]O2, which exhibit much reduced oxygen loss. Understanding the factors that determine the degree of reversible O‐redox versus irreversible O‐loss is important if Li‐rich cathodes are to be exploited in next generation lithium‐ion batteries. Here it is shown that the almost complete eradication of O‐loss with Ni substitution is due to the presence of a less Li‐rich, more Ni‐rich (nearer stoichiometric) rocksalt shell at the surface of the particles compared with the bulk, which acts as a self‐protecting layer against O‐loss. In the case of Ni and Co co‐substitution, a thinner rocksalt shell forms, and the O‐loss is more abundant. In contrast, Co doping does not result in a surface shell yet it still suppresses O‐loss, although less so than Ni and Ni/Co doping, indicating that doping without shell formation is effective and that two mechanisms exist for O‐loss suppression.

Optical coherence tomography (OCT) has been revolutionary in the diagnosis and management of optic nerve abnormalities, adding quantifiable information that can be correlated with clinical examination findings.

Megalopapilla and tilted optic disc are usually incidental findings, not requiring treatment, and are associated with a generally good visual prognosis. Other progressive diseases of eye (e.g., glaucoma) should be ruled out when diagnosing these anomalies.

This chapter discusses normal optic nerve head anatomy and development, as demonstrated by OCT, which has provided quantitative values of the pediatric optic nerve.

Optic nerve hypoplasia is a congenital anomaly in which the optic disc is abnormally small and is associated with other neurodevelopmental disorders. Optical coherence tomography (OCT) can be used to measure the retinal nerve fiber layer and can add quantification for measuring nerve size.

An investigational, portable spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT) unit revealed small hyperreflective opacities in both eyes of a patient with bilateral retinoblastoma. There was no evidence of vitreous seeding on ophthalmoscopy of either eye. Although the opacities may initially raise concern for potential vitreous seeding, this report suggests alternate potential etiologies for such opacities, which were also seen on imaging of a cohort of normal eyes in pediatric patients. Purpose To determine the personalized rate of uveal melanoma–related metastasis on the basis of individual tumor cytogenetic profile. Design Retrospective case series. Participants A total of 1059 patients with uveal melanoma. Methods Fine-needle aspiration biopsy (FNAB) for DNA amplification and whole genome array–based assay were performed for analysis of chromosomes 3, 6, and 8. Main Outcome Measures Melanoma-related metastasis. Results The mean patient age was 57 years, and most were white (1026/1059, 97%). The melanoma involved the choroid (938/1059, 89%), ciliary body (85/1059, 8%), or iris (36/1059, 3%), with 19% being macular in location. The mean largest basal diameter was 11 mm (median, 12 mm; range, 3–24 mm), and mean thickness was 5 mm (median, 4 mm; range, 1–20 mm). On the basis of individual chromosomal mutations, risk for metastasis was increased for chromosome 3 partial monosomy (hazard ratio [HR], 2.84; P = 0.001), 3 complete monosomy (HR, 6.7, P P = 0.003), 8p loss (HR, 21.5, P P P = 0.02]); 3 complete monosomy, 6 disomy, 8q gain, and 8p gain (14%, 14%, NE [HR, 18.3, P = 0.02]); 3 complete monosomy, 6 disomy, and 8q gain (8%, 27%, 39% [HR, 19.5, P P Conclusions Risk for melanoma-related metastasis strongly correlates with personalized cytogenetic profiles, with 5-year Kaplan–Meier estimates ranging from 4% with chromosomes 3, 6, and 8 disomy up to 39% for 3 complete monosomy, 6 disomy, and 8q gain.

Now, a strategy utilizing a fluorinated, disordered LiMn2O4 spinel structure shows how ultra-fast Li-ion diffusion and high energy density can be achieved with Mn and O redox.

PReCIS:: Home tonometry is useful in detecting tube-opening and alarming intraocular pressures (IOPs) after Baerveldt glaucoma drainage device (GDD) implantation in childhood glaucoma, allowing for timely physician response and individualized patient care. PURPOSE The postoperative management of the nonvalved Baerveldt GDD presents challenges in pediatric patients due to widely variable IOP often occurring perioperatively. We evaluated the use of home tonometry in the management of Baerveldt implants for refractory childhood glaucoma. MATERIALS AND METHODS As part of an ongoing prospective study involving home rebound tonometry, the families of patients receiving Baerveldt implants were trained to use the Icare TA01i rebound tonometer and asked to document IOP, relevant symptoms, and ocular medication changes outside of the clinic setting. Data were analyzed for time to tube-opening, multiple-day fluctuations, and various IOP trends. Clinician response to IOP fluctuations detected by home tonometry was also evaluated. RESULTS Included were 19 patients (mean age: 16.1±9.6 y) having Baerveldt implantation from 2015 to 2018 by 1 attending physician. In conventional intercalation cathodes, alkali metal ions can move in and out of a layered material with the charge being compensated for by reversible reduction and oxidation of the transition metal ions. If the cathode material used in a lithium-ion or sodium-ion battery is alkali-rich, this can increase the battery's energy density by storing charge on the oxide and the transition metal ions, rather than on the transition metal alone

Layered sodium transition metal oxides with the P2 structure, e.g. Na2/3[Ni1/3Mn2/3]O2, are regarded as candidates for Na-ion battery cathodes. On charging, extraction of Na destabilizes the P2 phase (ABBA oxide ion stacking) in which Na+ is in trigonal prismatic coordination, resulting in layer gliding and formation of an O2 phase (ABAC stacking) with octahedral coordination. However, many related compounds do not exhibit such a simple P2 to O2 transition but rather form a so called "Z"-phase. Substituting Ni by Fe in Na2/3[Ni1/3Mn2/3]O2 is attractive as it reduces cost. The Fe containing compounds, such as Na2/3[Ni1/6Mn1/2Fe1/3]O2, form a "Z"-phase when charged above 4.1 V vs. Na+/Na. By combining ex situ and operando X-ray diffraction with scanning transmission electron microscopy and simulated diffraction patterns, we demonstrate that the "Z"-phase is most accurately described as a continuously changing intergrowth structure which evolves from P2 to O2 through the OP4 structure as an intermediate. On charging, Na+ removal results in O-type stacking faults within the P2 structure which increase in proportion. At 50% O-type stacking faults, the ordered OP4 phase forms and on further charging more O-type stacking faults are formed progressing towards a pure O2 structure. This gives the superficial appearance of a solid solution. Furthermore, in contrast to some previous studies, we did not detect Fe migration at any state-of-charge using 57Fe-Mössbauer spectroscopy. It was, however, found that the Fe-substitution serves to disrupt cation ordering in the material. The empirical literature on charismatic or transformational leadership demonstrates that such leadership has profound effects on followers. However, while several versions of charismatic leadership theory predict such effects, none of them explains the process by which these effects are achieved. In this paper we seek to advance leadership theory by addressing this fundamental problem. We offer a self-concept based motivational theory to explain the process by which charismatic leader behaviors cause profound transformational effects on followers. The theory presents the argument that charismatic leadership has its effects by strongly engaging followers’ self-concepts in the interest of the mission articulated by the leader. We derive from this theory testable propositions about (a) the behavior of charismatic leaders and their effects on followers, (b) the role of followers’ values and orientations in the charismatic relationship, and (c) some of the organizational conditions that favor the emergence and effectiveness of charismatic leaders.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: To describe depth-resolved macular microvasculature abnormalities in patients with familial exudative vitreoretinopathy (FEVR) using optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA). PATIENTS AND METHODS: Twenty-two eyes (11 eyes of six patients with FEVR and 11 control eyes) were imaged with OCTA. Graders qualitatively analyzed the OCTA images of the superficial and deep vascular complexes for abnormal vascular features and compared to fluorescein angiography (FA). RESULTS: Seven of 11 eyes with FEVR displayed abnormal macular vascular findings. Abnormalities in the superficial vascular complex included dilation, disorganization, straightening, heterogeneous vessel density, and curls/loops. In the deep vascular complex, abnormalities included areas of decreased density, disorganization, curls/loops, and “end bulbs.” Except for dragging and straightening of the vessels, none of these macular features were visible on FA. CONCLUSION: OCTA revealed marked macular abnormalities in eyes with FEVR that have not been previously observed with FA alone, suggesting this is more than a disease of the retinal periphery and involves macular and deep retinal vasculature abnormalities. One of the most powerful tools in immunotoxicology is the assessment of cytokines, the proteins/peptides responsible for regulating a variety of processes including immunity, inflammation, apoptosis, and hematopoiesis. Cytokine production measurements offer outstanding information and may eventually substitute for other more laborious procedures in the assessment of immunotoxicity. The particular profile of cytokine production provides indeed important information regarding the nature of many immunotoxic responses.Recent expansion in the knowledge of cytokine biology and the realization that cytokines play a role in human diseases have created a need for the precise assessment and accurate interpretation of their presence and activity in body fluids, tissues, and cells. Proper evaluation of cytokines requires attention to several technical details. Multi-cytokine analysis still needs to be standardized in terms of optimum source for analysis, protocols, and quality control issues, such as the use of reference standards and the expression of results.Important practical details and considerations will be discussed in this chapter, including the source of the sample to be tested (circulating fluids or ex vivo/in vitro isolated cells); the potential effects of collection, processing, and storage of the results of the assays, as well as potential variables associated with the source material (matrix effects, relevance, inhibitory substances); and factors influencing the choice of assay used (bioassay, immunoassay, molecular biology technique, flow cytometry).

The quantity of charge stored in transition metal oxide intercalation cathodes for Li or Na batteries is not limited by transition metal redox reactions but can also access redox reactions on O; examples include Li1.2Ni0.13Mn0.54Co0.13O2, Li2Ru0.75Sn0.25O3, Li1.2Nb0.3Mn0.4O2, Na2RuO3 and Na2/3Mg0.28Mn0.72O2. Here we show that oxyfluorides can also exhibit charge storage by O-redox. We report the discovery of lithium manganese oxyfluoride, specifically the composition, Li1.9Mn0.95O2.05F0.95, with a high capacity to store charge of 280 mA h g−1 (corresponding to 960 W h kg−1) of which almost half, 130 mA h g−1, arises from O-redox. This material has a disordered cubic rocksalt structure and the voltage–composition curve is significantly more reversible compared with ordered Li-rich layered cathodes. Unlike lithium manganese oxides such as the ordered layered rocksalt Li2MnO3, Li1.9Mn0.95O2.05F0.95 does not exhibit O loss from the lattice. The material is synthesised using a simple, one-pot mechanochemical procedure.

The search for improved energy-storage materials has revealed Li- and Na-rich intercalation compounds as promising high-capacity cathodes. They exhibit capacities in excess of what would be expected from alkali-ion removal/reinsertion and charge compensation by transition-metal (TM) ions. The additional capacity is provided through charge compensation by oxygen redox chemistry and some oxygen loss. It has been reported previously that oxygen redox occurs in O 2\(p\) orbitals that interact with alkali ions in the TM and alkali-ion layers (that is, oxygen redox occurs in compounds containing Li\(^+\)–O(2\(p\))–Li\(^+\) interactions). Na\(_{2/3}\)[Mg\(_{0.28}\)Mn\(_{0.72}\)]O\(_2\) exhibits an excess capacity and here we show that this is caused by oxygen redox, even though Mg\(^{2+}\) resides in the TM layers rather than alkali-metal (AM) ions, which demonstrates that excess AM ions are not required to activate oxygen redox. We also show that, unlike the alkali-rich compounds, Na\(_{2/3}\)[Mg\(_{0.28}\)Mn\(_{0.72}\)]O\(_2\) does not lose oxygen. The extraction of alkali ions from the alkali and TM layers in the alkali-rich compounds results in severely underbonded oxygen, which promotes oxygen loss, whereas Mg\(^{2+}\) remains in Na\(_{2/3}\)[Mg\(_{0.28}\)Mn\(_{0.72}\)]O\(_2\), which stabilizes oxygen.

Study of infant retinal vascular development has been limited to histopathological reports. We report herein depth-resolved visualization of full-term infant parafoveal microvasculature and their similarity to that of young children using a portable optical coherence tomography angiography system.
