Conventional methods for the synthesis of fullerenes and carbon nanotubes such as laser or electric arc ablation have failed when the process is scaled up. Our ultimate goal is to scale a solar process up from 2 to 250 kW; this paper shows that our method for achieving this scale-up is valid because we were able to predict process performance variables at the 50 kW level from preliminary experimental results from 2 kW experiments. The key parameters that characterize this process are the carbon soot mass flow rate and the desired product yield. The carbon soot production rate is a function of the target temperature and this can be predicted in a straightforward way from a heat transfer model of the larger system. The yield is a more complicated function of specific reactor variables such as patterns of fluid flow, residence times at various temperatures, and the reaction chemistry, but we have found that for fullerenes it depends primarily on the concentration of carbon vapor in the carrier gas, the target temperature and the temperature distribution in the cooling zone. Using these parameters, we scaled our process up to 50 kW and compared the predicted results to the measured performance. A graphite target 6 cm in diameter was vaporized in an argon atmosphere and a reduced pressure of 120-240 hPa with a solar flux density in the range 600-920 W/[cm.sup.2]. Vaporization rates as high as 50 g/h were measured with a fullerene production rate equal to about 2 g/h, i.e., the expected results. [DOI: 10.1115/1.1434263]

Fractal geometry mathematics was carried out to study the variations in column efficiency (h) with its geometrical characteristics. In this case the fractal dimension D of h was recorded as 2.

When packed columns filled with porous particles are used for the separation of macromolecules, either size exclusion chromatography (SEC), hydrodynamic chromatography (HDC), or a combination of both determine the macromolecule retention mechanism. This paper develops a simple mathematical model to describe a molecular weight calibration graph, which includes both HDC and SEC. There is a transition between the HDC calibration region at higher molecular weights to an SEC region at lower molecular weights. The degree to which SEC and HDC are mixed depends on the particle diameter, the relative size of the pores, and the macromolecule size. In addition, using fractal considerations, the fractal character of the apparent selectivity between two adjacent peaks on the chromatogram is shown. This model constitutes an attractive tool to enhance the expansion of these two chromatographic techniques for the separation of biological or synthetical macromolecules.

Novel equations (Guillaume Y. C.; et al. Anal. Chem. 2000, 72, 853) were developed to describe the large double-stranded DNA molecule retention in slalom chromatography (SC). These equations were applied for the first time to model both the 'apparent selectivity' and the resolution between two eluted DNA fragments on a chromatogram. A study of the column efficiency corroborated the fact that slalom chromatography is not based on an adsorption or equilibrium phenomenon, but can be attributed to a hydrodynamic phenomenon. Using a combination of the dynamics of DNA fragment progression in the column and fractal considerations, it was shown that the apparent selectivity depends both on the DNA fragment sizes and mobile-phase flow rate and therefore a balance between two hydrodynamic regimes. A chromatographic response function was also used to obtain the most efficient separation conditions for a mixture of DNA fragments in a minimum analysis time. The chromatographic data confirmed that in SC the flow rate can increase or maintain the separation efficiency with an associated decrease in the analysis time. This constitutes an attractive outcome in relation to the classical chromatographic separation.

The aggregation of alpha-synuclein in the dopaminergic neurons of the substantia nigra is a critical step in the Parkinson's disease (PD). The etiology of the disease is unknown but recent epidemiological and experimental studies have renewed interest in the hypothesis that environmental factors, especially herbicides and metals, have a role on the pathogenesis of PD. For the first time, the association constants of alpha-synuclein with five herbicides have been calculated using a capillary electrophoresis (CE) method. In addition, the effect of a number of metals on this binding has been investigated. It appears that the herbicides preferentially bind to a partially folded intermediate conformation of alpha-synuclein induced by manganese, aluminium, cadmium, copper and zinc. Then, metal increases the synuclein-herbicide association. However, this study shows contrasting actions with the antibiotic rifampicin and magnesium addition leading to a decrease of the alpha-synuclein-herbicide interaction even if other metals are present in the bulk solvent. Considering epidemiological studies, all these results suggest an underlying molecular basis for PD and related body diseases.
