The practice of sports has become increasingly commonplace in the daily lives of individuals and sports-related injuries vary depending on the sport practiced. Oral and facial injuries are very common in many sports. Brazilian jiu-jitsu is a contact sport in which the stomatognathic system is exposed to injuries, and the most prevalent are soft tissue injuries, such as facial abrasions and lacerations and dental injuries, such as tooth fractures. Although not mandatory in Brazil for the practice of Brazilian jiu-jitsu, a mouthguard is an essential form of protection from orofacial injuries. When a blow is applied to the face, the mouthguard provides absorption and dissipation of force and also reduces of impact to the temporomandibular joint, by redistributing the force. For that, it is therefore of the utmost importance for athletes to visit a dentist periodically for examinations. Such protective devices (mouthguards) may be individualized and crafted by a dentist for better adaptation and less discomfort for the user.

Caro(a) Leitor(a)O CIONN, Congresso Internacional de Odontologia Norte e Nordeste, realizado no Centro de Convenções de Pernambuco nos dias 8,9 e 10 de Agosto de 2019, surge como projeto anual de integração da ciência, indústria, acadêmicos e profissionais da área. O momento é de inovar, realizar novos negócios e compartilhar conhecimentos frente a uma Odontologia moderna e digitalizada.A Odontologia passa por transformações de elevado impacto científico e social. Sendo assim, a comissão organizadora do CIONN reuniu os maiores nomes nacionais e internacionais para uma grade cientifica inovadora, buscando o aprimorarento de cada área do conhecimento, respeitando suas particularidades. Em um espaço de exposição, reuniram-se colegas da área e empreendedores para ensinar, por meio de tecnologias de última geração, que também a Odontologia é responsável por uma saúde pública comprometida com a qualidade de vida de sua população. Entre os painéis, foram submetidos mais de 600 trabalhos, dos quais 535 foram selecionados, os quais temos o prazer de divulgar no presente volume de ANAIS. Acreditamos na internacionalização, aliada aos avanços clínicos, para o desenvolvimento científico da Odontologia.

Objetivo: Realizar um estudo bibliométrico dos resumos da SBPqO, traçando um perfil dos trabalhos publicados. Material e métodos: Realizou-se um estudo descritivo, analisando os resumos publicados em anais do referido evento. Os trabalhos foram classificados de acordo com ano de publicação; região; estado; instituição; tipo de instituição; objeto, área ou assunto estudado; tipo de estudo; caracterização do estudo; citação de submissão ao Comitê de Ética e Pesquisa; financiamento para realização da pesquisa; agência/órgão de fomento. A coleta foi realizada por três examinadores, que organizaram os resultados em um banco informatizado. Resultados: De um total de 8.381 resumos, 743 (8,86%) foram referentes à área endodôntica, sendo a maioria desenvolvida na região sudeste (66,1%), principalmente no estado de São Paulo (47%). Como assunto mais pesquisado destacou-se “limas, materiais e instrumentos”, com 47,6%. Observou-se maior quantidade de estudos experimentais (66,1%), sendo os do tipo in vitromais presentes (64,3%). A maioria das pesquisas foi advinda de instituições públicas (73,8%), principalmente de duas instituições específicas: USP com 14,8% e da UNESP com 13,5% dos trabalhos. Percebeu-se, ainda, uma grande quantidade de estudos realizados sem auxílio financeiro (68,5%). Não houve citação de submissão ao Comitê de Ética e Pesquisa. Conclusão: Constatou-se que existe o interesse científico pela área endodôntica mesmo que em pequena escala. Ao mesmo tempo, observou-se a necessidade de maior incentivo às pesquisas em alguns locais, visto que houve concentração em determinadas regiões e instituições, bem como uma diminuição das pesquisas ao considerar-se os anos analisados.Descritores: Pesquisa em Odontologia; Bibliometria; Endodontia.

An 11-year-old female patient complained of "a blister in the mouth." Intraoral examination evidenced a bullous lesion in the left mouth floor measuring approximately 4 cm with exophytic growing, bluish coloration, defined limits, soft consistency, smooth surface, and 5 days of evolution. Clinical diagnosis was ranula. Micromarsupialization was performed after infiltrative anesthesia, and surgical knots were made far from the mucosa by the interposition of a hemostatic clamp, forming fistulas originating from the epithelization around the thread, allowing salivary flow. In the transoperative period, there was immediate drainage of part of the content retained within the lesion, reducing its initial volume. Surgical knots were removed after 7 days, and the patient was followed up for 3 months. The lesion regressed entirely without signals of recurrence, ruling out the need of excision. Therefore, micromarsupialization stands as a conservative therapy for the treatment of ranulas and mucoceles of significant size.

Objective Biological behavior of oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) in young patients is controversial. Therefore, this study compared prognostic factors of OSCC between young and older patients, through a systemic review. Study Design Electronic search in the databases Pubmed/Scopus/Ovid/Proquest/Cochrane Library/Web of Science/Lilacs was performed until April 2018, without filters by language or year of publication. Only cohort studies were included and evaluated by Newcastle-Ottawa scale for risk of bias. Analysis of titles and abstracts was made by 2 calibrated researchers (kappa = 0.94). Results A total of 5370 articles were reviewed, and 10 of the most relevant articles that are suitable to the criteria were selected. All included studies had a low risk of bias. Independent of age group, male was more affected, and tongue was anatomic site more frequent. Main risk factors were smoking and alcoholism in both age groups. Most patients in both age groups were diagnosed in early clinical stages (I/II). Regarding to histologic grading, majority of OSCC was classified as moderately differentiated in both age groups. Lower survival was observed in older patients. Conclusions Among all prognostic factors evaluated, survival showed difference in age groups, suggesting, then, that OSCC in older patients could exhibit more aggressive biologic behavior.

Dental caries, the disease that causes tooth decay, is infectious, and the mutans streptococci bacteria have long been identified as the primary disease-causing agents. Caries vaccines showed promising results in experimental studies; however, it remains far the effective use in humans due to political-economic and ethical issues. Progress towards practical vaccine development requires evaluation of candidate vaccines in clinical trials. Promising strategies of passive immunization also require further clinical evaluation. The purpose of this chapter is to review the literature on the main research projects aimed at developing caries vaccines.
