Abstract

We analyzed genetic data of 47,429 multiple sclerosis (MS) and 68,374 control subjects and established a reference map of the genetic architecture of MS that includes 200 autosomal susceptibility variants outside the major histocompatibility complex (MHC), one chromosome X variant, and 32 variants within the extended MHC. We used an ensemble of methods to prioritize 551 putative susceptibility genes that implicate multiple innate and adaptive pathways distributed across the cellular components of the immune system. Using expression profiles from purified human microglia, we observed enrichment for MS genes in these brain-resident immune cells, suggesting that these may have a role in targeting an autoimmune process to the central nervous system, although MS is most likely initially triggered by perturbation of peripheral immune responses.

Abstract

More than any other film genre, the musical of Hollywood’s Golden Age depended on the presence of performers on the bill: these personalities met the expectations of the star system and, in addition, their dancing and/or singing skills gave them a special place in a context where star images were foregrounded. This book studies what makes musical stars so specific from the 1930s on: their performances, especially solo, which also reveal how film musicals tackle highbrow and popular culture. Acts by Fred Astaire, Cyd Charisse, Rita Hayworth, Barbra Streisand, Carmen Miranda, Eleanor Powell, Bing Crosby, Bob Hope, Eddie Cantor, Doris Day and the Nicholas Brothers are analyzed according to four main issues: the role of technology in cinema-made performances (editing, dubbing…); ethnicity issues and the distinctive place that the musical genre granted - or not - to “non-white” artists; the importance of stars specialized in comedy who developed a carnivalesque dimension in films; and the process of star construction itself within the Hollywood system, in relation to other forms of performance or cultural industries.

Plus qu’aucun autre genre cinématographique américain, la comédie musicale de l’âge d’or hollywoodien dépend de la présence et parfois du nombre de stars à l’affiche : si ces personnalités répondent aux exigences du star system, leurs indispensables compétences en danse et/ou en chant leur donnent aussi une place à part dans un modèle reposant principalement sur l’image. Cet ouvrage examine ce qui fait le propre des vedettes du musical américain à partir des années 1930 : leurs performances, en particulier en solo, qui révèlent aussi la façon dont la comédie musicale cinématographique interagit avec les cultures savante et populaire. Les numéros de Fred Astaire, Cyd Charisse, Rita Hayworth, Barbra Streisand, Carmen Miranda, Eleanor Powell, Bing Crosby, Bob Hope, Eddie Cantor, Doris Day et des Nicholas Brothers sont ainsi analysés selon quatre questions principales : la place de la technologie dans les performances modelées pour le cinéma (montage, doublage…) ; les questions d’ethnicité et la place particulière que le genre musical accorde - ou pas - aux interprètes « non blancs » ; l’importance des stars comiques qui introduisent des moments carnavalesques dans les films ; et le processus même de construction des stars au sein du système hollywoodien, dans son lien avec les autres formes de spectacles ou les industries culturelles.

Abstract

Objective Research has shown significant rates of comorbidity among posttraumatic stress disorder ( PTSD), major depressive disorder ( MDD), and pain in prior era veterans but less is known about these disorders in Iraq and Afghanistan war era veterans. This study seeks to extend previous work by evaluating the association among PTSD, MDD, and pain (back, muscle, and headache pain) in this cohort. Method A sample of 1,614 veterans, recruited from 2005 to 2010, completed a structured clinical interview and questionnaires assessing trauma experiences, PTSD symptoms, depressive symptoms, and pain endorsement. Results Veterans with PTSD endorsed pain-related complaints at greater rates than veterans without PTSD. The highest rate of pain complaints was observed in veterans with comorbid PTSD/ MDD. Women were more likely to endorse back pain and headaches but no gender by diagnosis interactions were significant. Conclusions Findings highlight the complex comorbid relationship between PTSD, MDD, and pain among Iraq and Afghanistan veterans. This observed association suggests that integrated, multidisciplinary treatments may be beneficial, particularly when multiple psychological and physical health comorbidities are present with pain. Further support may be indicated for ongoing education of mental health and primary care providers about these co-occurring disorders. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
