2. How Masculinity Impedes African American Men From Seeking Mental Health Treatment.

Abstract

This study addresses the pronounced mental health disparities faced by African American men, characterized by the heightened severity of mental health conditions and their reluctance to seek mental health treatment. Persistent neglect toward the mental health of African American men perpetuates systemic inequities and heightens the stigma surrounding mental well-being within their communities. This study investigates the interaction of masculinity, distrust in doctors, and parental support on attitudes influencing African American men's reluctance to seek mental health care. A survey administered to 74 African American men revealed a negative correlation between masculinity and attitudes toward seeking mental health treatment. In contrast, no significant correlations were found between distrust in doctors and parental support on attitudes toward seeking mental health treatment. These findings were analyzed using Pearson's correlation, underscoring the urgent need to address masculine norms in mental health discourse among African American men. 11. Perceptions of Palliative Care: Demographics and Health Status Among the General Population in Florida and the United States.

Abstract

Background: Palliative care (PC) helps maintain quality of life for seriously ill patients, yet, many Americans lack knowledge of PC. Aim: To explore the relationships between knowledge of PC of individuals living in north-central Florida and throughout the United States. Design: This cross-sectional survey with three sampling approaches, one was a community-engaged sample and two were panel respondent samples. Respondents and setting: Respondents of the Florida sample (n1 = 329) and the community-engaged sample (n2 = 100), were representative of the 23 Florida county general population. Respondents of the national sample (n = 1800) were adult members of a panel owned by a cloud-based survey platform. Results: Young adults compared with adults (OR 1.62, 95% CI 1.14-2.28, P.007), middle-adults (OR 2.47, 95% CI 1.58-3.92, P <.001) and older-adults (OR 3.75, 95% CI 2.50-5.67, P <.001) were less likely to agree that the goal of PC is to help friends and family cope with a patient's illness, and that the goal of PC is to manage pain and other physical symptoms compared with adults (OR 1.67, 95% CI 1.20-2.30, P.002) middle-adults (OR 2.58, 95% CI 1.71-3.95, P <.001) and older-adults (OR 7.19, 95% CI 4.68-11.2, P <.001). Participants with greater rural identity (OR 1.39, 95% CI 1.31-1.48, P <.001) were more likely to agree that accepting PC means giving up. Abstract

Despite efforts to increase diversity, a glaring underrepresentation of minorities (URM) persists in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). Graduate school can be a stressful step in the STEM pipeline, especially for students previously unaware of the structure and challenges of postgraduate education. To promote successful minority participation in STEM and prepare prospective students for the impending challenges of applying for and attending graduate school, we developed a workshop based on the mentoring and fostering of a champion-oriented mindset entitled, "The Trials and Tribulations of Graduate School: How Do You Make an Impact?." Students from the HBCU Winston-Salem State University attended the workshop, and a pre/post—a 10-point Likert scale-based survey was administered. The questions used in this seminar were newly designed by the authors as program evaluations. The results suggest that the workshop was well-received by the students and provided information that they considered helpful to help navigate the graduate school process. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Introduction: Although pain is subjective and highly variable between individuals, little is known about the amount of body surface area (BSA) that represents chronically painful locations reported by patients with cancer. The purpose of this study was to explore associations between BSA and demographic, cancer, and other pain variables. Methodology: We used baseline data from a five-step, stepped-wedge randomized clinical trial of cancer patients receiving hospice care. Participants were 259 hospice patients (51% female; mean age 68.4±14.2; 34% Black, 50% White, 14% Other race; 18% Hispanic) who completed PAINReportIt, a measure of pain as a multi-dimensional phenomenon. This computerized software design allowed patients to (a) draw on front and back body outlines where they had pain, (b) select numbers from 0-10 to report their current, least and worst pain intensity in the past 24 hours, and (c) indicate their age, gender, race, ethnicity and type of cancer. We used a novel algorithm with the ImageJ software to calculate the BSA from the digital pain drawings and the R statistical program to conduct descriptive, correlational, and ANOVA analyses. Results: The other race group included 2 Asians, 35 Hispanics and 5 non-Hispanic Other. The three largest painful BSAs for a body region were located in the abdomen (12.0%±18.8%), lower back (6.8%±12.6%), and upper back (4.2%±9.3%). Patients’ average pain intensity scores were: Now (4.7±2.6), Least (3.2±2.4) and Worst (7.0±2.4). Differences by race were noted for the total BSA (p=.03), pain now (p=.02), and pain worst (p=.03). Blacks reported the lowest total BSA, Whites the lowest pain now and worst pain, and the Other racial group the highest total BSA, pain now and pain worst. With Bonferroni adjustment, Other and Black differed on BSA (p=.02) and Other and White differed on pain now (p=.05). Abstract

Individuals with pain from sickle cell disease (SCD) are often treated for nociceptive pain, but recent findings indicate they may also have neuropathic pain. PAIN Report It, a computerized version of the McGill Pain Questionnaire, provides a potential subscale that is the summed number of selected neuropathic pain quality words (PR-NNP), but it lacks construct validity. The study purpose was to ascertain PR-NNP construct validity in adults with SCD and chronic pain. In an outpatient setting, 186 participants completed the PAIN Report It, Neuropathic Pain Symptom Inventory (NPSI), and Leeds Assessment for Neuropathic Symptoms and Signs (S-LANSS). PR-NNP was moderately correlated with NPSI (r =.33, p <.001) and S-LANSS (r =.40, p <.001). Regression analysis indicated that PR-NNP and pain intensity, but not a nociceptive pain subscale, were significant predictors of NPSI and S-LANSS. Findings support construct validity of PR-NNP, which may be useful as a screening tool for neuropathic pain in patients with SCD. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Objectives: Sickle cell disease (SCD) is a serious illness with disabling acute and chronic pain that needs better therapies, but insufficient patient participation in research is a major impediment to advancing SCD pain management. The purpose of this article is to discuss the challenges of conducting an SCD study and approaches to successfully overcoming those challenges. Design: In a repeated-measures, longitudinal study designed to characterize SCD pain phenotypes, we recruited 311 adults of African ancestry. Adults with SCD completed 4 study visits 6 months apart, and age- and gender-matched healthy controls completed 1 visit. Results: We recruited and completed measures on 186 patients with SCD and 125 healthy controls. We retained 151 patients with SCD with data at 4 time points over 18 months and 125 healthy controls (1 time point) but encountered many challenges in recruitment and study visit completion. Enrollment delays often arose from patients' difficulty in taking time from their complicated lives and frequent pain episodes. Once scheduled, participants with SCD cancelled 49% of visits often because of pain; controls canceled 30% of their scheduled visits. To facilitate recruitment and retention, we implemented a number of strategies that were invaluable in our success. Conclusion: Patients' struggles with illness, chronic pain, and their life situations resulted in many challenges to recruitment and completion of study visits. Important to overcoming challenges was gaining the trust of patients with SCD and a participant-centered approach.
