To test the hypothesis that megaparsec-scale giant radio galaxies (GRGs) have multiple epochs of recurrent activity which lead to their giant sizes and to understand the nature of double-double radio galaxies (DDRGs), we have built the largest sample of giant DDRGs from the LOFAR Two Metre Sky Survey (LoTSS). The sample consists of 111 sources, of which 76 are newly identified. Their redshift and total projected size ranges are between 0.06 to 1.6 and 0.7 Mpc to 3.2 Mpc, respectively. We conducted a detailed analysis to characterise their properties, including arm-length ratios, flux density ratios of pairs of lobes, and misalignment angles. These measurements allow us to study the symmetry parameters, which are influenced by the immediate and large-scale environments of DDRGs. Our study conclusively shows that the cocoons in which the inner lobes of DDRGs grow are often contaminated with surrounding material from the external medium, leading to observed asymmetries in the inner lobes. Our analysis also reveals highly misaligned DDRGs, which could be due to environmental factors and/or changes in the supermassive black hole jet ejection axes. By studying the misalignment angles, we assess the stability of the jets in these systems in relation to their environment. Additionally, we have also characterised the large-scale environments of DDRGs, identifying them within dense galaxy clusters and studying how cluster weather significantly affects their morphologies. Interestingly, we have identified two gigahertz peaked-spectrum (GPS) candidates in the unresolved cores of the DDRGs, as well as one triple-double candidate, which, if confirmed, would be only the fifth known case. Modern high-sensitivity radio telescopes are discovering an increased number of resolved sources with intricate radio structures and fainter radio emissions. These sources often present a challenge because source detectors might identify them as separate radio sources rather than components belonging to the same physically connected radio source. Currently, there are no reliable automatic methods to determine which radio components are single radio sources or part of multi-component sources. We propose a deep learning classifier to identify those sources that are part of a multi-component system and require component association on data from the LOFAR Two-Metre Sky Survey (LoTSS). We combine different types of input data using multi-modal deep learning to extract spatial and local information about the radio source components: a convolutional neural network component that processes radio images is combined with a neural network component that uses parameters measured from the radio sources and their nearest neighbours. Our model retrieves 94 per cent of the sources with multiple components on a balanced test set with 2,683 sources and achieves almost 97 per cent accuracy in the real imbalanced data (323,103 sources). The approach holds potential for integration into pipelines for automatic radio component association and cross-identification. We report observations of a powerful ionized gas outflow in a z = 4.1 luminous ($ L_{1.4GHz} \sim 10^{28.3} \ W \ Hz^{-1}$) radio galaxy TNJ1338-1942 hosting an obscured quasar using the Near Infrared Spectrograph (NIRSpec) on board JWST. We spatially resolve a large-scale (~15 kpc) outflow and measure resolved outflow rates. The outflowing gas shows velocities exceeding 900 $ km \ s^{-1}$ and broad line profiles with line widths exceeding 1200 $ km \ s^{-1}$ located at ~10 kpc projected distance from the central nucleus. The outflowing nebula spatially overlaps with the brightest radio lobe, indicating that the powerful radio jets are responsible for the extraordinary kinematics exhibited by the ionized gas. The ionized gas is possibly ionized by the central obscured quasar with a contribution from shocks. The spatially resolved mass outflow rate shows that the region with the broadest line profiles exhibits the strongest outflow rates, with an integrated mass outflow rate of ~500 $ M_{\odot} \ yr^{-1}$. Our hypothesis is that an over-pressured shocked jet fluid expands laterally to create an expanding ellipsoidal "cocoon" that causes the surrounding gas to accelerate outwards. The total kinetic energy injected by the radio jet is about 3 orders of magnitude larger than the total kinetic energy measured in the outflowing ionized gas. This implies that kinetic energy must be transferred inefficiently from the jets to the gas. We present the first wide area (2.5 x 2.5 deg^2) LOFAR High Band Antenna image at a resolution of 1.2'' x 2'' with a median noise of approximately 80 microJy per beam. It was made from an 8-hour International LOFAR Telescope (ILT) observation of the ELAIS-N1 field at frequencies ranging from 120 to 168 MHz with the most up-to-date ILT imaging methods. This intermediate resolution falls between the highest possible resolution (0.3'') achievable by using all International LOFAR Telescope (ILT) baselines and the standard 6-arcsecond resolution in the LoTSS (LOFAR Two-meter Sky Survey) image products utilising the LOFAR Dutch baselines only. This is the first demonstration of the feasibility of imaging using the ILT at a resolution of around 1'', which provides unique information on source morphology at scales that fall below the surface brightness limits at higher resolutions. The total calibration and imaging computational time is approximately 52,000 core hours, nearly 5 times more than required to produce a 6'' resolution image. We also present a radio source catalogue containing 2263 sources detected over the 2.5 x 2.5 deg^2 image of the ELAIS-N1 field, with a peak intensity threshold of 5.5 sigma. The catalogue has been cross-matched with the LoTSS deep ELAIS-N1 field radio catalogue, and its flux density and positional accuracy have been investigated and corrected accordingly. We find that approximately 80% of sources which we expect to be detectable based on their peak brightness in the LoTSS 6'' resolution image are detected in this image, which is approximately a factor of two higher than for 0.3'' resolution imaging in the Lockman Hole, implying there is a wealth of information on these intermediate scales., Comment: 20 pages, 19 figures, revised manuscript submitted to A&A

Bent radio AGN morphology depends on the density of the surrounding gas. However, bent sources are found inside and outside clusters, raising the question of how environment impacts bent AGN morphology. We analyze new LOw-Frequency Array Two-metre Sky Survey (LoTSS) Data Release II observations of 20 bent AGNs in clusters and 15 not in clusters from the high-$z$ Clusters Occupied by Bent Radio AGN (COBRA) survey (0.35 $<$ $z$ $<$ 2.35). We measure the impact of environment on size, lobe symmetry, and radio luminosity. We find that the most asymmetric radio lobes lie outside of clusters and we uncover a tentative correlation between the total projected physical area and cluster overdensity. Additionally, we, for the first time, present spectral index measurements of a large sample of high-$z$ bent sources using LoTSS and Very Large Array Faint Images of the Radio Sky at Twenty-centimeters (VLA FIRST) observations. We find that the median spectral index for the cluster sample is -0.76 $\pm$ 0.01, while the median spectral index for the non-cluster sample median is -0.81 $\pm$ 0.02. Furthermore, 13 of 20 cluster bent AGNs have flat cores ($\alpha$ $\geq$ -0.6) compared to 4 of 15 of non-clusters, indicating a key environmental signature. Beyond core spectral index, bent AGNs inside and outside clusters are remarkably similar. We conclude that the non-cluster sample may be more representative of bent AGNs at large offsets from the cluster center ($>$ 1.2Mpc) or bent AGNs in weaker groups rather than the field., Comment: Accepted to ApJ on 08/24/2023. 37 pages, 23 figures, 3 tables

Remnant radio galaxies represent the dying phase of radio-loud active galactic nuclei (AGN). Large samples of remnant radio galaxies are important for quantifying the radio galaxy life cycle. The remnants of radio-loud AGN can be identified in radio sky surveys based on their spectral index, or, complementary, through visual inspection based on their radio morphology. However, this is extremely time-consuming when applied to the new large and sensitive radio surveys. Here we aim to reduce the amount of visual inspection required to find AGN remnants based on their morphology, through supervised machine learning trained on an existing sample of remnant candidates. For a dataset of 4107 radio sources, with angular sizes larger than 60 arcsec, from the LOw Frequency ARray (LOFAR) Two-Metre Sky Survey second data release (LoTSS-DR2), we started with 151 radio sources that were visually classified as 'AGN remnant candidate'. We derived a wide range of morphological features for all radio sources from their corresponding Stokes-I images: from simple source catalogue-derived properties, to clustered Haralick-features, and self-organising map (SOM) derived morphological features. We trained a random forest classifier to separate the 'AGN remnant candidates' from the not yet inspected sources. The SOM-derived features and the total to peak flux ratio of a source are shown to be most salient to the classifier. We estimate that $31\pm5\%$ of sources with positive predictions from our classifier will be labelled 'AGN remnant candidates' upon visual inspection, while we estimate the upper bound of the $95\%$ confidence interval for 'AGN remnant candidates' in the negative predictions at $8\%$. Visual inspection of just the positive predictions reduces the number of radio sources requiring visual inspection by $73\%$., Comment: 23 pages; accepted for publication in A&A

We present the high-$z$ quasar candidate archive (HzQCA), summarizing the spectroscopic observations of 174 $z\gtrsim5$ quasar candidates using Keck/LRIS, Keck/MOSFIRE, and Keck/NIRES. We identify 7 candidates as $z\sim 6$ quasars 3 of them newly reported here, and 51 candidates as brown dwarfs. In the remaining sources, 74 candidates are unlikely to be quasars; 2 sources are inconclusive; the others could not be fully reduced or extracted. Based on the classifications we investigate the distributions of quasars and contaminants in color space with photometry measurements from DELS ($z$), VIKING/UKIDSS ($YJHK_s$/$YJHK$), and un\textit{WISE} ($W1W2$). We find that the identified brown dwarfs are not fully consistent with the empirical brown dwarf model that is commonly used in quasar candidate selection methods. To refine spectroscopic confirmation strategies, we simulate synthetic spectroscopy of high-$z$ quasars and contaminants for all three instruments. The simulations utilize the spectroscopic data in HzQCA. We predict the required exposure times for quasar confirmation and propose and optimal strategy for spectroscopic follow-up observations. For example, we demonstrate that we can identify a $m_J=21.5$ at $z=7.6$ or a $m_J=23.0$ at $z=7.0$ within 15\,min of exposure time with LRIS. We present for the first time a study of peculiar giant radio galaxy (GRG) J223301+131502 using deep multi-frequency radio observations from GMRT (323, 612, and 1300 MHz) and LOFAR (144 MHz) along with optical spectroscopic observations with the WHT~4.2m optical telescope. Our observations have firmly established its redshift of 0.09956 and unveiled its exceptional jet structure extending more than $\sim$ 200 kpc leading to a peculiar kink structure of $\sim$ 100 kpc. We measure the overall size of this GRG to be $\sim$ 1.83 Mpc; it exhibits lobes without any prominent hotspots and closely resembles a barbell. Our deep low-frequency radio maps clearly reveal the steep-spectrum diffuse emission from the lobes of the GRG. The magnetic field strength of $\sim$ 5 $\mu$G and spectral ages between about 110 to 200 mega years for the radio lobes were estimated using radio data from LOFAR 144 MHz observations and GMRT 323 and 612 MHz observations. We discuss the possible causes leading to the formation of the observed kink feature for the GRG, which includes precession of the jet axis, development of instabilities and magnetic reconnection. Despite its enormous size, the Barbell GRG is found to be residing in a low-mass (M$_{200} \sim 10^{14}$ $\rm M_{\odot}$) galaxy cluster. We give an overview and describe the rationale, methods, and first results from NIRCam images of the JWST "Prime Extragalactic Areas for Reionization and Lensing Science" ("PEARLS") project. PEARLS uses up to eight NIRCam filters to survey several prime extragalactic survey areas: two fields at the North Ecliptic Pole (NEP); seven gravitationally lensing clusters; two high redshift proto-clusters; and the iconic backlit VV 191 galaxy system to map its dust attenuation. PEARLS also includes NIRISS spectra for one of the NEP fields and NIRSpec spectra of two high-redshift quasars. The main goal of PEARLS is to study the epoch of galaxy assembly, AGN growth, and First Light. Five fields, the JWST NEP Time-Domain Field (TDF), IRAC Dark Field (IDF), and three lensing clusters, will be observed in up to four epochs over a year. The cadence and sensitivity of the imaging data are ideally suited to find faint variable objects such as weak AGN, high-redshift supernovae, and cluster caustic transits. Both NEP fields have sightlines through our Galaxy, providing significant numbers of very faint brown dwarfs whose proper motions can be studied. Observations from the first spoke in the NEP TDF are public. This paper presents our first PEARLS observations, their NIRCam data reduction and analysis, our first object catalogs, the 0.9-4.5 $\mu$m galaxy counts and Integrated Galaxy Light. We assess the JWST sky brightness in 13 NIRCam filters, yielding our first constraints to diffuse light at 0.9-4.5 {\mu}m. In this paper we report the first identification of jellyfish galaxies in the Perseus cluster (Abell 426). We identified four jellyfish galaxies (LEDA 2191078, MCG +07-07-070, UGC 2654, UGC 2665) within the central $2^\circ \times 2^\circ$ ($2.6\,\mathrm{Mpc} \times 2.6\,\mathrm{Mpc}$) of Perseus based on the presence of one-sided radio continuum tails that were detected at $144\,\mathrm{MHz}$ by the LOw Frequency ARray (LOFAR). The observed radio tails, as well as the orientation of morphological features in the rest-frame optical, are consistent with these four galaxies being impacted by ram pressure stripping as they orbit through the Perseus intracluster medium. By combining the LOFAR imaging at 144 MHz with 344 MHz imaging from the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array, we derived spectral indices for the disks and the stripped tails of these jellyfish galaxies. We show that the spectral indices over the galaxy disks are quite flat, while the indices of the stripped tails are substantially steeper. We also identified a number of compact $\mathrm{H\alpha + [NII]}$ sources with narrowband imaging from the Isaac Newton Telescope. These sources are brighter along the leading side of the galaxy (i.e., opposite to the direction of the stripped tail), which is consistent with ram pressure induced star formation. Lastly, consistent with previous works in other clusters, we find that these jellyfish galaxies show enhanced radio luminosities for their observed star formation rates. Given the small distance to the Perseus cluster ($D \sim 70\,\mathrm{Mpc}$, $1'' \simeq 340\,\mathrm{pc}$), these galaxies are excellent candidates for multiwavelength follow-up observations to probe the impact of ram pressure stripping on galaxy star formation at subkiloparsec scales., Comment: 14 pages, 7 figures, accepted for publication in A&A

3C295 is a bright, compact steep spectrum source with a well-studied integrated radio spectral energy distribution (SED) from 132 MHz to 15 GHz. However, spatially resolved spectral studies have been limited due to a lack of high resolution images at low radio frequencies. These frequencies are crucial for measuring absorption processes, and anchoring the overall spectral modelling of the radio SED. In this paper, we use International LOFAR (LOw-Frequency ARray) Telescope (ILT) observations of 3C295 to study its spatially resolved spectral properties with sub-arcsecond resolution at 132 MHz. Combining our new 132 MHz observation with archival data at 1.6 GHz, 4.8 GHz, and 15 GHz, we are able to carry out a resolved radio spectral analysis. The spectral properties of the hotspots provides evidence for low frequency flattening. In contrast, the spectral shape across the lobes is consistent with a JP spectral ageing model. Using the integrated spectral information for each component, we then fit low-frequency absorption models to the hotspots, finding that both free-free absorption and synchrotron self-absorption models provide a better fit to the data than a standard power law. Although we can say there is low-frequency absorption present in the hotspots of 3C295, future observations with the Low Band Antenna of the ILT at 55 MHz may allow us to distinguish the type of absorption., Comment: Submitted to a special issue of A&A on sub-arcsecond imaging with LOFAR

We searched for high-z quasars within the X-ray source population detected in the contiguous $\sim 140^2$ eFEDS field observed by eROSITA during the performance verification phase. We collected the available spectroscopic information in the field, including the sample of all currently known optically selected z>5.5 quasars and cross-matched secure Legacy DR8 counterparts of eROSITA-detected X-ray point-like sources with this spectroscopic sample. We report the X-ray detection of an eROSITA source securely matched to the well-known quasar SDSS J083643.85+005453.3 (z=5.81). The soft X-ray flux of the source derived from eROSITA is consistent with previous Chandra observations. In addition, we report the detection of the quasar with LOFAR at 145 MHz and ASKAP at 888 MHz. The reported flux densities confirm a spectral flattening at lower frequencies in the emission of the radio core, indicating that the quasar could be a (sub-) gigahertz peaked spectrum source. The inferred spectral shape and the parsec-scale radio morphology of SDSS J083643.85+005453.3 suggest that it is in an early stage of its evolution into a large-scale radio source or confined in a dense environment. We find no indications for a strong jet contribution to the X-ray emission of the quasar, which is therefore likely to be linked to accretion processes. The detection of this source allows us to place the first constraints on the XLF at z>5.5 based on a secure spectroscopic redshift. Compared to extrapolations from lower-redshift observations, this favours a relatively flat slope for the XLF at $z\sim 6$ beyond $L_*$. The population of X-ray luminous AGNs at high redshift may be larger than previously thought. From our XLF constraints, we make the conservative prediction that eROSITA will detect $\sim 90$ X-ray luminous AGNs at redshifts 5.7

Clusters of galaxies are the largest known gravitationally-bound structures in the Universe. When clusters collide, they create merger shocks on cosmological scales, which transform most of the kinetic energy carried by the cluster gaseous halos into heat. Observations of merger shocks provide key information of the merger dynamics, and enable insights into the formation and thermal history of the large-scale structures. Nearly all of the merger shocks are found in systems where the clusters have already collided, knowledge of shocks in the pre-merger phase is a crucial missing ingredient. Here we report on the discovery of a unique shock in a cluster pair 1E 2216 and 1E 2215. The two clusters are observed at an early phase of major merger. Contrary to all the known merger shocks observed ubiquitously on merger axes, the new shock propagates outward along the equatorial plane of the merger. This discovery uncovers an important epoch in the formation of massive clusters, when the rapid approach of the cluster pair leads to strong compression of gas along the merger axis. This paper is the second in a series presenting the results of our deep H$\alpha$-line survey towards protoclusters at $z>2$, based on narrow-band imaging with the Subaru Telescope. This work investigates massive galaxies in a protocluster region associated with a radio galaxy (PKS 1138$-$262), the Spiderweb galaxy, at $z=2.2$. Our 0.5 mag deeper narrow-band imaging than previous surveys collects a total of 68 H$\alpha$ emitters (HAE). 17 out of the 68 are newly discovered protocluster members. First, a very high characteristic stellar mass of M$_\star^\ast=10^{11.73}$ M$_\odot$ is measured from a Schechter function fit to the mass distribution of HAEs. Together with the Chandra X-ray data, we find that four out of six massive HAEs (M$_\star>10^{11}$ M$_\odot$) show bright X-ray emission, suggesting that they host active galactic nuclei (AGNs). Their mass estimates, therefore, would be affected by the nuclear emission from AGNs. Notably, the X-ray detected HAEs are likely positioned near the boundary between star-forming and quiescent populations in the rest-frame $UVJ$ plane. Moreover, our deep narrow-band data succeed in probing the bright H$\alpha$ (+[Nii]) line nebula of the Spiderweb galaxy extending over $\sim100$ physical kpc. These results suggest that the massive galaxies in the Spiderweb protocluster are on the way to becoming the bright red sequence objects seen in local galaxy clusters, where AGNs might play an essential role in their quenching processes. We present the 25 square-degree GMRT-XXL-N 610 MHz radio continuum survey, conducted at 50~cm wavelength with the Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (GMRT) towards the XXL Northern field (XXL-N). We combined previously published observations of the XMM-Large Scale Structure (XMM-LSS) field, located in the central part of XXL-N, with newly conducted observations towards the remaining XXL-N area, and imaged the combined data-set using the Source Peeling and Atmospheric Modeling ({\sc SPAM}) pipeline. The final mosaic encompasses a total area of $30.4$ square degrees, with ${\rm rms}<150~\mu$Jy/beam over 60\% of the area. The ${\rm rms}$ achieved in the inner 9.6 square degree area, enclosing the XMM-LSS field, is about $200~\mu$Jy/beam, while that over the outer 12.66 square degree area (which excludes the noisy edges) is about $45~\mu$Jy/beam. The resolution of the final mosaic is 6.5 arcsec. We present a catalogue of 5\,434 sources detected at $\geq7\times {\rm rms}$. We verify, and correct the reliability of, the catalog in terms of astrometry, flux, and false detection rate. Making use of the (to date) deepest radio continuum survey over a relatively large (2 square degree) field, complete at the flux levels probed by the GMRT-XXL-N survey, we also assess the survey's incompleteness as a function of flux density. The radio continuum sensitivity reached over a large field with a wealth of multi-wavelength data available makes the GMRT-XXL-N 610 MHz survey an important asset for studying the physical properties, environments and cosmic evolution of radio sources, in particular radio-selected active galactic nuclei (AGN)., Comment: 11 pages, 13 figures, 1 table; to appear in A&A (XXL special issue)

Radio emission is a key indicator of star-formation activity in galaxies, but the radio luminosity-star formation relation has to date been studied almost exclusively at frequencies of 1.4 GHz or above. At lower radio frequencies the effects of thermal radio emission are greatly reduced, and so we would expect the radio emission observed to be completely dominated by synchrotron radiation from supernova-generated cosmic rays. As part of the LOFAR Surveys Key Science project, the Herschel-ATLAS NGP field has been surveyed with LOFAR at an effective frequency of 150 MHz. We select a sample from the MPA-JHU catalogue of SDSS galaxies in this area: the combination of Herschel, optical and mid-infrared data enable us to derive star-formation rates (SFRs) for our sources using spectral energy distribution fitting, allowing a detailed study of the low-frequency radio luminosity--star-formation relation in the nearby Universe. For those objects selected as star-forming galaxies (SFGs) using optical emission line diagnostics, we find a tight relationship between the 150 MHz radio luminosity ($L_{150}$) and SFR. Interestingly, we find that a single power-law relationship between $L_{150}$ and SFR is not a good description of all SFGs: a broken power law model provides a better fit. This may indicate an additional mechanism for the generation of radio-emitting cosmic rays. Also, at given SFR, the radio luminosity depends on the stellar mass of the galaxy. Objects which were not classified as SFGs have higher 150-MHz radio luminosity than would be expected given their SFR, implying an important role for low-level active galactic nucleus activity., Comment: 21 pages, 12 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

Building on the first paper in this series (Duncan et al. 2018), we present a study investigating the performance of Gaussian process photometric redshift (photo-z) estimates for galaxies and active galactic nuclei detected in deep radio continuum surveys. A Gaussian process redshift code is used to produce photo-z estimates targeting specific subsets of both the AGN population - infrared, X-ray and optically selected AGN - and the general galaxy population. The new estimates for the AGN population are found to perform significantly better at z > 1 than the template-based photo-z estimates presented in our previous study. Our new photo-z estimates are then combined with template estimates through hierarchical Bayesian combination to produce a hybrid consensus estimate that outperforms either of the individual methods across all source types. Photo-z estimates for radio sources that are X-ray sources or optical/IR AGN are signficantly improved in comparison to previous template-only estimates, with outlier fractions and robust scatter reduced by up to a factor of ~4. The ability of our method to combine the strengths of the two input photo-z techniques and the large improvements we observe illustrate its potential for enabling future exploitation of deep radio continuum surveys for both the study of galaxy and black hole co-evolution and for cosmological studies., Comment: 15 pages, 14 figures. We present new HST/WFC3 observations and re-analyse VLT data to unveil the continuum, variability and rest-frame UV lines of the multiple UV clumps of the most luminous Ly$\alpha$ emitter at z=6.6, CR7. Our re-reduced, flux calibrated X-SHOOTER spectra of CR7 reveal a HeII emission line in observations obtained along the major axis of Lyman-alpha (Lya) emission with the best seeing conditions. HeII is spatially offset by +0.8'' from the peak of Lya emission, and it is found towards clump B. Our WFC3 grism spectra detects the UV continuum of CR7's clump A, yielding a power law with $\beta=-2.5^{+0.6}_{-0.7}$ and $M_{UV}=-21.87^{+0.25}_{-0.20}$. No significant variability is found for any of the UV clumps on their own, but there is tentative (~2.2$\sigma$) brightening of CR7 in F110W as a whole from 2012 to 2017. HST grism data fail to robustly detect rest-frame UV lines in any of the clumps, implying fluxes <2x10$^{-17}$ erg s$^{-1}$ cm$^{-2}$ (3 $\sigma$). We perform CLOUDY modelling to constrain the metallicity and the ionising nature of CR7. CR7 seems to be actively forming stars without any clear AGN activity in clump A, consistent with a metallicity of ~0.05-0.2 Z$_{\odot}$. Component C or an inter-clump component between B and C may host a high ionisation source. We present a study of photometric redshift performance for galaxies and active galactic nuclei detected in deep radio continuum surveys. Using two multi-wavelength datasets, over the NOAO Deep Wide Field Survey Bo\"otes and COSMOS fields, we assess photometric redshift (photo-z) performance for a sample of $\sim 4,500$ radio continuum sources with spectroscopic redshifts relative to those of $\sim 63,000$ non radio-detected sources in the same fields. We investigate the performance of three photometric redshift template sets as a function of redshift, radio luminosity and infrared/X-ray properties. We find that no single template library is able to provide the best performance across all subsets of the radio detected population, with variation in the optimum template set both between subsets and between fields. Through a hierarchical Bayesian combination of the photo-z estimates from all three template sets, we are able to produce a consensus photo-z estimate which equals or improves upon the performance of any individual template set., Comment: 20 pages, 17 figures. The galaxy cluster RX J0603.3+4214 at z=0.225 is one of the rarest clusters boasting an extremely large (~2 Mpc) radio-relic. Because of the remarkable morphology of the relic, the cluster is nicknamed "Toothbrush Cluster". Although the cluster's underlying mass distribution is one of the critical pieces of information needed to reconstruct the merger scenario responsible for the puzzling radio-relic morphology, its proximity to the Galactic plane b~10 deg has imposed significant observational challenges. We present a high-resolution weak-lensing study of the cluster with Subaru/Suprime Cam and Hubble Space Telescope imaging data. Our mass reconstruction reveals that the cluster is comprised of complicated dark matter substructures closely tracing the galaxy distribution, however in contrast with the relatively simple binary X-ray morphology. Nevertheless, we find that the cluster mass is still dominated by the two most massive clumps aligned north-south with a ~3:1 mass ratio (M_{200}=6.29_{-1.62}^{+2.24} x 10^{14} Msun and 1.98_{-0.74}^{+1.24} x 10^{14} Msun for the northern and southern clumps, respectively). The southern mass peak is ~2' offset toward the south with respect to the corresponding X-ray peak, which has a "bullet"-like morphology pointing south. Comparison of the current weak-lensing result with the X-ray, galaxy, and radio-relic suggests that perhaps the dominant mechanism responsible for the observed relic may be a high-speed collision of the two most massive subclusters, although the peculiarity of the morphology necessitates involvement of additional sub-clusters. Careful numerical simulations should follow in order to obtain more complete understanding of the merger scenario utilizing all existing observations., Comment: Matched to the published version in ApJ

CIZA J2242.8+5301 ($z = 0.188$, nicknamed 'Sausage') is an extremely massive ($M_{200}\sim 2.0 \times 10^{15}M_\odot$ ), merging cluster with shock waves towards its outskirts, which was found to host numerous emission-line galaxies. We performed extremely deep Westerbork Synthesis Radio Telescope HI observations of the 'Sausage' cluster to investigate the effect of the merger and the shocks on the gas reservoirs fuelling present and future star formation (SF) in cluster members. By using spectral stacking, we find that the emission-line galaxies in the 'Sausage' cluster have, on average, as much HI gas as field galaxies (when accounting for the fact cluster galaxies are more massive than the field galaxies), contrary to previous studies. Since the cluster galaxies are more massive than the field spirals, they may have been able to retain their gas during the cluster merger. The large HI reservoirs are expected to be consumed within $\sim0.75-1.0$ Gyr by the vigorous SF and AGN activity and/or driven out by the out-flows we observe. We find that the star-formation rate in a large fraction of H$\alpha$ emission-line cluster galaxies correlates well with the radio broad band emission, tracing supernova remnant emission. This suggests that the cluster galaxies, all located in post-shock regions, may have been undergoing sustained SFR for at least 100 Myr. This fully supports the interpretation proposed by Stroe et al. (2015) and Sobral et al. We present deep MUSE integral-field unit (IFU) spectroscopic observations of the giant (~150 x 80 kpc) Ly-alpha halo around the z=4.1 radio galaxy TNJ J1338-1942. This 9-hr observation maps the two-dimensional kinematics of the Ly-alpha emission across the halo. We identify two HI absorbers which are seen against the Ly-alpha emission, both of which cover the full 150 x 80 kpc extent of the halo and so have covering fractions ~1. The stronger and more blue-shifted absorber (dv~1200 km/s) has dynamics that mirror that of the underlying halo emission and we suggest that this high column material (n(HI) ~ 10^19.4 /cm^2), which is also seen in CIV absorption, represents an out-flowing shell that has been driven by the AGN (or star formation) within the galaxy. The weaker (n(HI)~10^14 /cm^2) and less blue shifted (dv~500 km/s) absorber most likely represents material in the cavity between the out-flowing shell and the Ly-alpha halo. We estimate that the mass in the shell must be of order 10^10 Msol -- a significant fraction of the ISM from a galaxy at z=4. The large scales of these coherent structures illustrate the potentially powerful influence of AGN feedback on the distribution and energetics of material in their surroundings. Indeed, the discovery of high-velocity (~1000 km/s), group-halo-scale (i.e. >150 kpc) and mass-loaded winds in the vicinity of the central radio source are broadly in agreement with the requirements of models that invoke AGN-driven outflows to regulate star formation and black-hole growth in massive galaxies at early times., Comment: 11 pages, 5 figures. Astronomy at or below the 'survey threshold' has expanded significantly since the publication of the original 'Science with the Square Kilometer Array' in 1999 and its update in 2004. The techniques in this regime may be broadly (but far from exclusively) defined as 'confusion' or 'P(D)' analyses (analyses of one-point statistics), and 'stacking', accounting for the flux-density distribution of noise-limited images co-added at the positions of objects detected/isolated in a different waveband. We present forecasts for constraints on cosmological models which can be obtained by forthcoming radio continuum surveys: the wide surveys with the LOw Frequency ARray (LOFAR), Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder (ASKAP) and the Westerbork Observations of the Deep APERTIF Northern sky (WODAN). We use simulated catalogues appropriate to the planned surveys to predict measurements obtained with the source auto-correlation, the cross-correlation between radio sources and CMB maps (the Integrated Sachs-Wolfe effect), the cross-correlation of radio sources with foreground objects due to cosmic magnification, and a joint analysis together with the CMB power spectrum and supernovae. We show that near future radio surveys will bring complementary measurements to other experiments, probing different cosmological volumes, and having different systematics. Our results show that the unprecedented sky coverage of these surveys combined should provide the most significant measurement yet of the Integrated Sachs-Wolfe effect. In addition, we show that using the ISW effect will significantly tighten constraints on modified gravity parameters, while the best measurements of dark energy models will come from galaxy auto-correlation function analyses. Using the combination of EMU and WODAN to provide a full sky survey, it will be possible to measure the dark energy parameters with an uncertainty of \{$\sigma (w_0) = 0.05$, $\sigma (w_a) = 0.12$\} and the modified gravity parameters \{$\sigma (\eta_0) = 0.10$, $\sigma (\mu_0) = 0.05$\}, assuming Planck CMB+SN(current data) priors. Finally, we show that radio surveys would detect a primordial non-Gaussianity of $f_{\rm NL}$ = 8 at 1-$\sigma$ and we briefly discuss other promising probes., Comment: 19 pages, 16 figures, 2 tables; submitted to MNRAS

At very low frequencies, the new pan-European radio telescope LOFAR is opening the last unexplored window of the electromagnetic spectrum for astrophysical studies. The revolutionary APERTIF phased arrays that are about to be installed on the Westerbork radio telescope (WSRT) will dramatically increase the survey speed for the WSRT. Combined surveys with these two facilities will deeply chart the northern sky over almost two decades in radio frequency from \sim 15 up to 1400 MHz. Here we briefly describe some of the capabilities of these new facilities and what radio surveys are planned to study fundamental issues related the formation and evolution of galaxies and clusters of galaxies. In the second part we briefly review some recent observational results directly showing that diffuse radio emission in clusters traces shocks due to cluster mergers. As these diffuse radio sources are relatively bright at low frequencies, LOFAR should be able to detect thousands of such sources up to the epoch of cluster formation. This will allow addressing many question about the origin and evolution of shocks and magnetic fields in clusters. The intergalactic medium was not completely reionized until approximately a billion years after the Big Bang, as revealed by observations of quasars with redshifts of less than 6.5. It has been difficult to probe to higher redshifts, however, because quasars have historically been identified in optical surveys, which are insensitive to sources at redshifts exceeding 6.5. Here we report observations of a quasar (ULAS J112001.48+064124.3) at a redshift of 7.085, which is 0.77 billion years after the Big Bang. ULAS J1120+0461 had a luminosity of 6.3x10^13 L_Sun and hosted a black hole with a mass of 2x10^9 M_Sun (where L_Sun and M_Sun are the luminosity and mass of the Sun). The measured radius of the ionized near zone around ULAS J1120+0641 is 1.9 megaparsecs, a factor of three smaller than typical for quasars at redshifts between 6.0 and 6.4. The near zone transmission profile is consistent with a Ly alpha damping wing, suggesting that the neutral fraction of the intergalactic medium in front of ULAS J1120+0641 exceeded 0.1., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures; source data available at http://astro.ic.ac.uk/~mortlock/ulas_j1120+0641/

The Low Frequency Array (LOFAR) will operate between 10 and 250 MHz, and will observe the low frequency Universe to an unprecedented sensitivity and angular resolution. The construction and commissioning of LOFAR is well underway, with over 27 of the Dutch stations and five International stations routinely performing both single-station and interferometric observations over the frequency range that LOFAR is anticipated to operate at. We present a study of protoclusters associated with high redshift radio galaxies. We imaged MRC1017-220 (z=1.77) and MRC0156-252 (z=2.02) using the near-infrared wide-field (7.5'x7.5') imager VLT/HAWK-I in the Y, H and Ks bands. We present the first deep Y-band galaxy number counts within a large area (200 arcmin2). We then develop a purely near-infrared colour selection technique to isolate galaxies at 1.6

We present a sample of 40 Ultra Steep Spectrum (USS, $\alpha \leq -1.3$, $S_{\nu}\propto \nu^{\alpha}$) radio sources selected from the Westerbork in the Southern Hemisphere (WISH) catalog. The USS sources have been imaged in K--band at the Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory (CTIO) and with the Very Large Telescope at Cerro Paranal. We also present VLT, Keck and Willian Herschel Telescope(WHT) optical spectroscopy of 14 targets selection from 4 different USS samples. For 12 sources, we have been able to determine the redshifts, including 4 new radio galaxies at z > 3. We find that most of our USS sources have predominantly small (6'') radio sizes and faint magnitudes (K~18). The mean K-band counterpart magnitude is $\bar{K}$=18.6. The expected redshift distribution estimated using the Hubble K-z diagram has a mean of $\bar{z}_{exp}$$\sim$2.13, which is higher than the predicted redshift obtained for the SUMSS-NVSS sample and the expected redshift obtained in the 6C$^{**}$ survey. The compact USS sample analyzed here may contain a higher fraction of galaxies which are high redshift and/or are heavily obscured by dust. Using the 74, 352 and 1400 MHz flux densities of a sub-sample, we construct a radio colour-colour diagram. We find that all but one of our USS sources have a strong tendency to flatten below 352 MHz. We also find that the highest redshift source from this paper (at z=3.84) does not show evidence for spectral flattening down to 151 MHz. We present the results of a comprehensive Spitzer survey of 69 radio galaxies across 160% for ~75% the high redshift radio galaxies. As expected from unified models of AGN, the stellar fraction of the rest-frame H-band luminosity has no correlation with redshift, radio luminosity, or rest-frame mid-IR (5um) luminosity. Additionally, while the stellar H-band luminosity does not vary with stellar fraction, the total H-band luminosity anti-correlates with the stellar fraction as would be expected if the underlying hosts of these radio galaxies comprise a homogeneous population. The resultant stellar luminosities imply stellar masses of 10^{11-11.5}Msun even at the highest redshifts. Powerful radio galaxies tend to lie in a similar region of mid-IR color-color space as unobscured AGN, despite the stellar contribution to their mid-IR SEDs at shorter-wavelengths. The mid-IR luminosities alone classify most HzRGs as LIRGs or ULIRGs with even higher total-IR luminosities. As expected, these exceptionally high mid-IR luminosities are consistent with an obscured, highly-accreting AGN. We analyze very deep HST, VLT and Spitzer photometry of galaxies at 22 galaxies. The estimated distributions of these properties do not change significantly when adding IRAC data to the UBVIJHK photometry. However, for individual galaxies the addition of IRAC can improve the constraints on the stellar populations, especially for red galaxies: uncertainties in stellar mass decrease by a factor of 2.7 for red (U-V > 1) galaxies, but only by a factor of 1.3 for blue (U-V < 1) galaxies. We find a similar color-dependence of the improvement for estimates of age and dust extinction. In addition, the improvement from adding IRAC depends on the availability of full near-infrared JHK coverage; if only K-band were available, the mass uncertainties of blue galaxies would decrease by a more substantial factor 1.9. Finally, we find that a trend of galaxy color with stellar mass is already present at z>2. The most massive galaxies at high redshift have red rest-frame U-V colors compared to lower mass galaxies even when allowing for complex star formation histories., Comment: Accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal, 16 pages, 16 figures

Dusty tori have been suggested to play a crucial role in determining the physical characteristics of active galactic nuclei (AGN), but investigation of their properties has stalled for lack of high resolution mid-IR imaging. Recently, a long-awaited breakthrough in this field was achieved: NGC 1068, a nearby AGN, was the first extragalactic object to be observed with a mid-IR interferometer, thereby obtaining the needed angular resolution to study the alleged torus. In this proceeding, first the field of AGN research is briefly reviewed, with an emphasis on models of dusty tori. Second, the general properties of the key object NGC 1068 are discussed. Third, the MIDI mid-IR interferometric data set is presented together with a first attempt to interpret this data in the context of tori models. Fourth, preliminary MIDI interferometric spectra of the nucleus of the nearby starbursting galaxy Circinus are presented. Finally, we briefly discuss the prospects of ESA's Darwin mission for observing nearby and distant AGN. This mission will allow detailed mapping of tori of low luminosity AGN such as NGC 1068 up to redshifts of 1 - 2 and more luminous AGN up to redshift of 10 and beyond (abridged)., Comment: 10 pages, 3 figures, published in Proceedings of SPIE Volume 5491 "New Frontiers in Stellar Interferometry"
