In this work, we devise a model for estimating UV and optical line emission (i.e., CIII] $1909$A, H$\beta$, [OIII] $5007$A, H$\alpha$, [NII] $6583$A) tracing HII regions in the interstellar medium (ISM) of galaxies at $z\sim4-6$ from the ALMA Large Programme ALPINE. The aim is to investigate the impact of binary stars in the stellar population along with an abrupt quenching in the Star Formation History (SFH) on line emission. This is crucial for understanding the ISM's properties in early galaxies and identifying new star formation tracers in high-$z$ galaxies. The model simulates HII+Photodissociation Region (PDR) complexes through radiative transfer in 1D slabs, characterized by gas density ($n$), ionisation parameter ($U$), and metallicity ($Z$). It considers: (a) heating from star formation (SF), simulated with Starburst99 and BPASS to quantify binary stars impact; (b) constant, exponentially declining, and quenched SFH scenarios. For each galaxy, we select theoretical ratios from CLOUDY models between [CII] line emission, tracing PDRs, and nebular lines from HII regions, using these to derive expected optical/UV lines from observed [CII]. We find binary stars strongly impact line emission post-quenching, keeping UV photon flux higher for longer, maintaining free electron temperature and ionised column density in HII regions up to 5 Myr after quenching. We constrain ISM properties of our subsample, finding a low ionisation parameter $\log U{\approx}-3.8\pm 0.2$ and moderate/high densities $\log(n/\rm cm^{-3}){\approx}2.9\pm 0.6$. Finally, we derive UV/optical line luminosities-SFR relations for different burstiness parameters ($k_s$). In the fiducial BPASS model, relations show negligible SFH dependence but depend on $k_s$, while in the SB99 case, dependence is on SFH. The gas in the interstellar medium (ISM) of galaxies is supersonically turbulent. Measurements of turbulence typically rely on cold gas emission lines for low-z galaxies and warm ionized gas observations for z>0 galaxies. Studies of warm gas kinematics at z>0 conclude that the turbulence strongly evolves as a function of redshift, due to the increasing impact of gas accretion and mergers in the early Universe. However, recent findings suggest potential biases in turbulence measurements derived from ionized gas at high-z, impacting our understanding of turbulence origin, ISM physics and disk formation. We investigate the evolution of turbulence using velocity dispersion ($\sigma$) measurements from cold gas tracers (i.e., CO, [CI], [CII]) derived from a sample of 57 galaxy disks spanning the redshift range z=0-5. This sample consists of main-sequence and starburst galaxies with stellar masses $\gtrsim 10^{10} M_{\odot}$. The comparison with current H$\alpha$ kinematic observations and existing models demonstrates that the velocity dispersion inferred from cold gas tracers differ by a factor of $\approx 3$ from those obtained using emission lines tracing warm gas. We show that stellar feedback is the main driver of turbulence measured from cold gas tracers. This is fundamentally different from the conclusions of studies based on warm gas, which had to consider additional turbulence drivers to explain the high values of $\sigma$. We present a model predicting the redshift evolution of turbulence in galaxy disks, attributing the increase of $\sigma$ with redshift to the higher energy injected by supernovae due to the elevated star-formation rate in high-z galaxies. This supernova-driven model suggests that turbulence is lower in galaxies with lower stellar mass compared to those with higher stellar mass. The extragalactic microquasar S26 has the most powerful jets observed in accreting binaries, with a kinetic luminosity of $L_{\rm jet}\sim10^{40}\,{\rm erg\,s^{-1}}$. According to the jet-disk symbiosis model, this implies that the accretion power to the stellar black hole at the core of the system should be very super-Eddington, on the order of $L_{\rm acc}\sim L_{\rm jet}$. However, the observed X-ray flux of this system, measured by the \textit{Chandra} and \textit{XMM-Newton} telescopes, indicates an apparent very sub-Eddington accretion luminosity of $L_{\rm X}\approx 10^{37}\,{\rm erg\,s^{-1}}$, orders of magnitude smaller than the jet power. We present here a preliminary investigation of the relationship between jet and disk power, analyze an X-ray observation of S26 obtained with \textit{XMM-Newton}, and propose an explanation for the emission. Local gravitational instability (LGI) is considered crucial for regulating star formation and gas turbulence in galaxy discs, especially at high redshift. Instability criteria usually assume infinitesimally thin discs or rely on approximations to include the stabilising effect of the gas disc thickness. We test a new 3D instability criterion for rotating gas discs that are vertically stratified in an external potential. This criterion reads $Q_{\rm3D}<1$, where $Q_{\rm3D}$ is the 3D analogue of the Toomre parameter $Q$. The advantage of $Q_{\rm3D}$ is that it allows us to study LGI in and above the galaxy midplane in a rigorous and self-consistent way. We apply the criterion to a sample of 44 star-forming galaxies at $0\lesssim\mathrm{z}\lesssim5$ hosting rotating discs of cold gas. The sample is representative of galaxies on the main sequence at $\mathrm{z}\approx 0$ and includes massive star-forming and starburst galaxies at $1\lesssim\mathrm{z}\lesssim5$. For each galaxy, we first apply the Toomre criterion for infinitesimally thin discs, finding 10 unstable systems. We then obtain maps of $Q_{\rm 3D}$ from a 3D model of the gas disc derived in the combined potential of dark matter, stars and the gas itself. According to the 3D criterion, two galaxies with $Q<1$ show no evidence of instability and the unstable regions that are 20% smaller than those where $Q<1$. No unstable disc is found at $0\lesssim\mathrm{z}\lesssim 1$, while $\approx 60$% of the systems at $2\lesssim\mathrm{z}\lesssim5$ are locally unstable. In these latter, a relatively small fraction of the total gas ($\approx 30$%) is potentially affected by the instability. Our results disfavour LGI as the main regulator of star formation and turbulence in moderately star-forming galaxies in the present-day Universe. Early galaxy formation, initiated by the dark matter and gas assembly, evolves through frequent mergers and feedback processes into dynamically hot, chaotic structures. In contrast, dynamically cold, smooth rotating disks have been observed in massive evolved galaxies merely 1.4 billion years after the Big Bang, suggesting rapid morphological and dynamical evolution in the early Universe. Probing this evolution mechanism necessitates studies of young galaxies, yet efforts have been hindered by observational limitations in both sensitivity and spatial resolution. Here we report high-resolution observations of a strongly lensed and quintuply imaged, low-luminosity, young galaxy at $z=6.072$ (dubbed the Cosmic Grapes), 930 million years after the Big Bang. Magnified by gravitational lensing, the galaxy is resolved into at least 15 individual star-forming clumps with effective radii of $r_{\rm e}\simeq$ 10--60 parsec (pc), which dominate $\simeq$ 70\% of the galaxy's total flux. The cool gas emission unveils a smooth, underlying rotating disk characterized by a high rotational-to-random motion ratio and a gravitationally unstable state (Toomre $Q \simeq$ 0.2--0.3), with high surface gas densities comparable to local dusty starbursts with $\simeq10^{3-5}$ $M_{\odot}$/pc$^{2}$. These gas properties suggest that the numerous star-forming clumps are formed through disk instabilities with weak feedback effects. The clumpiness of the Cosmic Grapes significantly exceeds that of galaxies at later epochs and the predictions from current simulations for early galaxies. We present JWST/NIRCam observations of a strongly-lensed, multiply-imaged galaxy at $z=6.072$, with magnification factors >~20 across the galaxy. We perform a spatially-resolved analysis of the physical properties at scales of ~200 pc, inferred from SED modelling of 5 NIRCam imaging bands on a pixel-by-pixel basis. We find young stars surrounded by extended older stellar populations. By comparing H$\alpha$+[NII] and [OIII]+H$\beta$ maps inferred from the image analysis with our additional NIRSpec IFU data, we find that the spatial distribution and strength of the line maps are in agreement with the IFU measurements. We explore different parametric SFH forms with Bagpipes on the spatially-integrated photometry, finding that a double power-law star formation history retrieves the closest value to the spatially-resolved stellar mass estimate, and other SFH forms suffer from the dominant outshining emission from the youngest stars, thus underestimating the stellar mass - up to ~0.5 dex-. On the other hand, the DPL cannot match the IFU measured emission lines. Additionally, the ionizing photon production efficiency may be overestimated in a spatially-integrated approach by ~0.15 dex, when compared to a spatially-resolved analysis. The agreement with the IFU measurements points towards the pixel-by-pixel approach as a way to mitigate the general degeneracy between the flux excess from emission lines and underlying continuum, especially when lacking photometric medium-band coverage and/or IFU observations. This study stresses the importance of studying galaxies as the complex systems that they are, resolving their stellar populations when possible, or using more flexible SFH parameterisations. The Kennicutt-Schmidt (KS) relation between the gas and the star formation rate (SFR) surface density ($\Sigma_{\rm gas}$-$\Sigma_{\rm SFR}$) is essential to understand star formation processes in galaxies. So far, it has been measured up to z~2.5 in main-sequence galaxies. In this letter, we aim to put constraints at z~4.5 using a sample of four massive main-sequence galaxies observed by ALMA at high resolution. We obtained ~0.3"-resolution [CII] and continuum maps of our objects, which we then converted into gas and obscured SFR surface density maps. In addition, we produced unobscured SFR surface density maps by convolving Hubble ancillary data in the rest-frame UV. We then derived the average $\Sigma_{\rm SFR}$ in various $\Sigma_{\rm gas}$ bins, and estimated the uncertainties using a Monte Carlo sampling. Our galaxy sample follows the KS relation measured in main-sequence galaxies at lower redshift and is slightly lower than predictions from simulations. Our data points probe the high end both in terms of $\Sigma_{\rm gas}$ and $\Sigma_{\rm gas}$, and gas depletion timescales (285-843 Myr) remain similar to z~2 objects. However, three of our objects are clearly morphologically disturbed, and we could have expected shorter gas depletion timescales (~100 Myr) similar to merger-driven starbursts at lower redshifts. We utilise the unprecedented depth and resolution of recent early-release science (ERS) JWST observations to define the near-infrared counterparts of sub-millimetre selected galaxies (SMGs). We identify 45 SCUBA-2 SMG positions within The Cosmic Evolution Early Release Science Survey (CEERS) JWST/NIRCam fields. Through an analysis of multi-wavelength $p$-values, NIRCam colours and predicted SCUBA-2 fluxes, we define 43 JWST/NIRCam counterparts to the SCUBA-2 SMGs, finding a 63 per cent agreement with those identified in prior $HST$ studies. Using EaZy-py we fit the available HST and JWST observations to quantify the photometric redshifts of the NIRCam-SMGs, establishing a broad range of redshift from $z$$\approx$0.2$-$5.4 with a median of $z$$\approx$2.29, in agreement with other studies of SMGs. We analyse their rest-frame optical and near-infrared morphological properties (e.g. effective radius (R$_{\rm e}$), S\'ersic index ($n$), CAS, Gini and M$_{20}$), finding, on average, late-type disc-like morphologies with large scatter into the intermediate and merger regions of the non-parametric parameter space. For the non-merging galaxies, we find a median rest-frame optical size and S\'ersic index (and $1\sigma$ scatter) of R$_{\rm e}$=3.10$\pm$1.67kpc and $n$=0.96$\pm$0.66. Whilst in the rest-frame near-infrared we establish more compact, higher S\'ersic index morphologies (R$_{\rm e}$=1.64$\pm$0.97, $n$=1.85$\pm$0.63). We further establish that both the rest-frame optical and near-infrared effective radii correlate negatively (at a 2$\sigma$ level) with redshift whilst the S\'ersic index remains constant with cosmic time. Our results are consistent with the picture of inside-out galaxy evolution, with more centrally concentrated older stellar populations, and more extended, younger star-forming regions whose stellar emission is heavily attenuated in the central regions., Comment: Submitted for publication in A&A. Spatially-resolved studies of the kinematics of galaxies provide crucial insights into their assembly and evolution, enabling to infer the properties of the dark matter halos, derive the impact of feedback on the ISM, characterize the outflow motions. To date, most of the kinematic studies at z=0.5-3.5 were obtained using emission lines tracing the warm, ionized gas. However, whether these provide an exhaustive or only a partial view of the dynamics of galaxies and of the properties of the ISM is still debated. Complementary insights on the cold gas kinematics are therefore needed. We present ALPAKA, a project aimed at gathering high-resolution observations of CO and [CI] emission lines of star-forming galaxies at z=0.5-3.5 from the ALMA public archive. With 147 hours of total integration time, ALPAKA assembles ~0.25'' observations for 28 star-forming galaxies, the largest sample with spatially-resolved cold gas kinematics as traced by either CO or [CI] at z>0.5. By combining multi-wavelength ancillary data, we derive the stellar masses ($M_{\star}$) and star-formation rates (SFR) for our targets, finding values of $M_{\star}\gtrsim 10^{10}$ M$_{\odot}$ and SFR of 10-3000 M$_{\odot}$/yr. A large fraction of ALPAKA galaxies (19/28) lie in overdense regions (clusters, groups, and protoclusters). We exploit the ALMA data to infer their dynamical state and we find that 19/28 ALPAKA galaxies are rotating disks, 2 are interacting systems, while for the remaining 7 sources the classification is uncertain. The disks have velocity dispersion values that are typically larger in the innermost regions than in the outskirts, with a median value for the entire disk sample of 35$^{+11}_{-9}$ km/s. Despite the bias of our sample towards galaxies hosting very energetic mechanisms, the ALPAKA disks have high ratios of ordered-to-random motion ($V/\sigma$) with a median value of 9$^{+7}_{-2}$., Comment: 36 pages, 23 figures, 5 tables; accepted for publication in A&A. We present a joint analysis of the galaxy S04590 at $z=8.496$ based on NIRSpec, NIRCam, and NIRISS observations obtained through as part of Early Release Observations programme of the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) and the far-infrared [CII]-$158\mu$m emission line detected by dedicated Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) observations. We determine the physical properties of S04590 from modelling of the spectral energy distribution (SED) and through the redshifted optical nebular emission lines detected with JWST/NIRSpec. The best-fit SED model reveals a low-mass ($M_\star = 10^{7.2}-10^{8}\,M_{\odot}$) galaxy with a low oxygen abundance of $12+\log{\rm (O/H)} = 7.16^{+0.10}_{-0.12}$ derived from the strong nebular and auroral emission lines. Assuming that [CII] effectively traces the interstellar medium (ISM), we estimate the total gas mass of the galaxy to be $M_{\rm gas} = (8.0\pm 4.0)\times 10^{8}\,M_\odot$ based on the luminosity and spatial extent of [CII]. This yields an exceptionally high gas fraction, $f_{\rm gas} = M_{\rm gas}/(M_{\rm gas} + M_\star) \gtrsim 90\%$, though still consistent within the range expected for its low metallicity. We further derive the metal mass of the galaxy based on the gas mass and gas-phase metallicity, which we find to be consistent with the expected metal production from Type II supernovae. Finally, we make the first constraints on the dust-to-gas (DTG) and dust-to-metals (DTM) ratios of galaxies in the epoch of reionization at $z\gtrsim 6$, showing overall low mass ratios of logDGT $<-3.8$ and logDTM $<-0.5$, though consistent with local scaling relations and in particular the local metal-poor galaxy I Zwicky 18. The phase transition between galaxies and quasars is often identified with the rare population of hyper-luminous, hot dust-obscured galaxies. Galaxy formation models predict these systems to grow via mergers, that can deliver large amounts of gas toward their centers, induce intense bursts of star formation and feed their supermassive black holes. Here we report the detection of 24 galaxies emitting Lyman-alpha emission on projected physical scales of about 400 kpc around the hyper-luminous hot dust-obscured galaxy W0410-0913, at redshift z = 3.631, using Very Large Telescope observations. While this indicates that W0410-0913 evolves in a very dense environment, we do not find clear signs of mergers that could sustain its growth. Data suggest that if mergers occurred, as models expect, these would involve less massive satellites, with only a moderate impact on the internal interstellar medium of W0410-0913, which is sustained by a rotationally-supported fast-rotating molecular disk, as Atacama Large Millimeter Array observations suggest., Comment: 26 pages, 12 figures, 1 table. Understanding how super-massive black holes form and grow in the early Universe has become a major challenge since the discovery of luminous quasars only 700 million years after the Big Bang. Simulations indicate an evolutionary sequence of dust-reddened quasars emerging from heavily dust-obscured starbursts that then transition to unobscured luminous quasars by expelling gas and dust. Although the last phase has been identified out to a redshift of 7.6, a transitioning quasar has not been found at similar redshifts owing to their faintness at optical and near-infrared wavelengths. Here we report observations of an ultraviolet compact object, GNz7q, associated with a dust-enshrouded starburst at a redshift of z=7.1899+/-0.0005. The host galaxy is more luminous in dust emission than any other known object at this epoch, forming 1,600 solar masses of stars per year within a central radius of 480 parsec. A red point source in the far-ultraviolet is identified in deep, high-resolution imaging and slitless spectroscopy. GNz7q is extremely faint in X-rays, which indicates the emergence of a uniquely ultraviolet compact star-forming region or a Compton-thick super-Eddington black-hole accretion disk at the dusty starburst core. In the latter case, the observed properties are consistent with predictions from cosmological simulations and suggest that GNz7q is an antecedent to unobscured luminous quasars at later epochs., Comment: 49 pages, 15 figures, 2 tables. The characterization of the dynamical state of galaxies up to z~7 is crucial for constraining the mechanisms driving the mass assembly in the early Universe. However, it is unclear whether the data quality of current and future observations is sufficient to perform a solid dynamical analysis. This paper defines the angular resolution and S/N required for a robust characterization of the dynamical state of galaxies up to the EoR. The final aim is to help design spatially-resolved surveys targeting emission lines of primeval galaxies. We investigate the [CII]-158um emission from z~6-7 LBGs from the SERRA cosmological simulation, covering a range of dynamical states: from disks to major mergers. We create ALMA mock observations with various data quality and apply the kinematic classification methods used in the literature. These tests allow us to quantify the performances of such methods as a function of angular resolution and S/N. We find that barely-resolved observations do not allow the correct dynamical characterization of a galaxy, resulting in the misclassification of all disks in our sample. However, even when using spatially-resolved observations with data quality typical of high-z galaxies, the standard kinematic classification methods, based on the analysis of the moment maps, fail to distinguish a merger from a disk. The high angular resolution and S/N needed to apply these standard methods successfully can be achieved with current data only for a handful of bright galaxies. We propose a new classification method, called PVsplit, that quantifies the asymmetries and morphological features in position-velocity diagrams using three empirical parameters. We test PVsplit on our mock data concluding that it can predict whether a galaxy is a disk or a merger provided that S/N $\gtrsim10$, and the major axis is covered by $\gtrsim3$ independent resolution elements., Comment: Submitted to Astronomy and Astrophysics (A&A) Journal. While the kinematics of galaxies up to z~3 have been characterized in detail, only a handful of galaxies at high redshift (z>4) have been examined in such a way. The Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) Large Program to INvestigate [CII] at Early times (ALPINE) survey observed a statistically significant sample of 118 star-forming main sequence galaxies at z=4.4-5.9 in [CII]158um emission, increasing the number of such observations by nearly 10x. A preliminary qualitative classification of these sources revealed a diversity of kinematic types (i.e., rotators, mergers, and dispersion-dominated systems). In this work, we supplement the initial classification by applying quantitative analyses to the ALPINE data: a tilted ring model (TRM) fitting code (3DBarolo), a morphological classification (Gini-M20), and a set of disk identification criteria. Of the 75 [CII]-detected ALPINE galaxies, 29 are detected at sufficient significance and spatial resolution to allow for TRM fitting and the derivation of morphological and kinematic parameters. These 29 sources constitute a high-mass subset of the ALPINE sample (M_*>10^9.5Msol). We robustly classify 14 of these sources (six rotators, five mergers, and three dispersion-dominated systems); the remaining sources showing complex behaviour. By exploring the G-M20 of z>4 rest-frame FIR and [CII] data for the first time, we find that our 1"~6kpc resolution data alone are insufficient to separate galaxy types. We compare the rotation curves and dynamical mass profiles of the six ALPINE rotators to the two previously detected z~4-6 unlensed main sequence rotators, finding high rotational velocities (~50-250km/s) and a diversity of rotation curve shapes., Comment: 25 pages, 15 figures. Outflows driven by active galactic nuclei (AGN) are expected to have a significant impact on the host galaxy evolution, but it is still debated how they are accelerated and propagate on galaxy-wide scales. This work addresses these questions by studying the link between X-ray, nuclear ultra-fast outflows (UFOs) and extended ionised outflows, for the first time in two quasars close to the peak of AGN activity ($z\sim2$), where AGN feedback is expected to be more effective. As targets, we selected two multiple-lensed quasars at $z\sim1.5$, HS 0810+2554 and SDSS J1353+1138, known to host UFOs and observed with the near-IR integral field spectrometer SINFONI at the VLT. We performed a kinematical analysis of the [O III]$\lambda$5007 optical emission line, in order to trace the presence of ionised outflows. We detected spatially resolved ionised outflows in both galaxies, extended more than 8 kpc and moving up to $v>2000$ km/s. We derived mass outflow rates of $\sim$12 M$_{sun}$/yr and $\sim$2 M$_{sun}$/yr for HS 0810+2554 and SDSS J1353+1138. Comparing with the co-hosted UFO energetics, the ionised outflow energetics in HS 0810+2554 is broadly consistent with a momentum-driven regime of wind propagation, while in SDSS J1353+1138 it differs by a factor of $\sim$100 from theoretical predictions, requiring either a massive molecular outflow or a high variability of the AGN activity to account for such a discrepancy. By additionally considering our results with those from the small sample of well-studied objects (all local but one), with both UFO and extended (ionised/atomic/molecular) outflow detections, we found that in 10 out of 12 galaxies the large-scale outflow energetics is consistent with the theoretical predictions of either a momentum- or an energy-driven scenario. The extreme astrophysical processes and conditions that characterize the early Universe are expected to result in young galaxies that are dynamically different from those observed today. This is because the strong effects associated with galaxy mergers and supernova explosions would lead to most young star-forming galaxies being dynamically hot, chaotic and strongly unstable. Here we report the presence of a dynamically cold, but highly star-forming, rotating disk in a galaxy at redshift ($z$) 4.2, when the Universe was just 1.4 billion years old. Galaxy SPT-S J041839-4751.9 is strongly gravitationally lensed by a foreground galaxy at $z = 0.263$, and it is a typical dusty starburst, with global star-forming and dust properties that are in agreement with current numerical simulations and observations of its galaxy population. Interferometric imaging at a spatial resolution of about 60 pc reveals a ratio of rotational-to-random motions of $V/\sigma = 9.7\pm 0.4$, which is at least four times larger than expected from any galaxy evolution model at this epoch, but similar to the ratios of spiral galaxies in the local Universe. We derive a rotation curve with the typical shape of nearby massive spiral galaxies, which demonstrates that at least some young galaxies are dynamically akin to those observed in the local Universe, and only weakly affected by extreme physical processes., Comment: Published in Nature on 12 August 2020. We resolve the host galaxies of seven gravitationally lensed quasars at redshift 1.5 to 2.8 using observations with the Atacama Large (sub-)Millimetre Array. Using a visibility-plane lens modelling technique, we create pixellated reconstructions of the dust morphology, and CO line morphology and kinematics. We find that the quasar hosts in our sample can be distinguished into two types: 1) galaxies characterised by clumpy, extended dust distributions ($R_{\rm eff}\sim2$ kpc) and mean star formation rate surface densities comparable to sub-mm-selected dusty star-forming galaxies ($\Sigma_{\rm SFR}\sim3$ M$_{\odot}$ yr$^{-1}$ kpc$^{-2}$); 2) galaxies that have sizes in dust emission similar to coeval passive galaxies and compact starbursts ($R_{\rm eff}\sim0.5$ kpc), with high mean star formation rate surface densities ($\Sigma_{\rm SFR}=$ 400$-$4500 M$_{\odot}$ yr$^{-1}$ kpc$^{-2}$) that may be Eddington-limited or super-Eddington. The small size of some quasar hosts suggests that we observe them at a stage in their transformation into compact spheroids, where a high density of dynamically unstable gas leads to efficient star formation and black hole accretion. For the one system where we probe the mass of the gas reservoir, we find a gas fraction of just $0.06 \pm 0.04$ and a depletion timescale of $50 \pm 40$ Myr, suggesting it is transitioning into quiescence. In general, we expect that the extreme level of star formation in the compact quasar host galaxies will rapidly exhaust their gas reservoirs and could quench with or without help from active galactic nuclei feedback., Comment: Accepted by MNRAS; 22 pages
