Recently, there has been increasing interest in organic carbon (OC) certification of soil as an incentive for farmers to adopt sustainable agricultural practices. In this context, this pilot project combines geochemical and geophysical methods to map the distribution of OC contents in agricultural fields, allowing us to detect variations in time and space. Here we demonstrated a relationship between soil OC contents estimated in the laboratory and the apparent electrical conductivity (ECa) measured in the field. Specifically, geochemical elemental analyses were used to evaluate the OC content and relative isotopic signature in collected soil samples from a hazelnut orchard in the Emilia–Romagna region of Northeastern Italy, while the geophysical Electromagnetic Induction (EMI) method enabled the in situ mapping of the ECa distribution in the same soil field. According to the results, geochemical and geophysical data were found to be reciprocally related, as both the organic matter and soil moisture were mainly incorporated into the fine sediments (i.e., clay) of the soil. Therefore, such a relation was used to create a map of the OC content distribution in the investigated field, which could be used to monitor the soil C sequestration on small-scale farmland and eventually develop precision agricultural services. In the future, this method could be used by farmers and regional and/or national policymakers to periodically certify the farm's soil conditions and verify the effectiveness of carbon sequestration. Infrastructure bridges play a crucial role in fostering economic and social development. However, the adverse effects of natural hazard and weather degradation, coupled with escalating rates of traffic, pose a significant threat. The resultant strain on the structure can lead to undue stress, elevating the risk of a critical asset failure. Hence, non-destructive testing (NDT) has become indispensable in the surveillance of bridge infrastructure. Its primary objectives include ensuring safety, optimizing structural integrity, minimizing repair costs, and extending the lifespan of bridges. NDT techniques can be applied to both existing and newly constructed bridge structures. However, it is crucial to recognize that each NDT method comes with its own set of advantages and limitations tailored to specific tasks. No single method can provide an effective and unequivocal diagnosis on its own. Among the various NDT methods, Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) has emerged as one of the most widely employed techniques for monitoring bridges. In fact, recent technical regulations now mandate the use of GPR for bridge monitoring and characterization, underscoring its significance in ensuring the structural health and longevity of these critical infrastructures. Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) stands out as one of the most highly recommended non-destructive methods, offering an efficient and timely assessment of the structural conditions of infrastructure. Recognizing the pivotal role of non-destructive testing (NDT) in this context, this paper aims to elucidate recent scientific endeavors related to the application of GPR in bridge engineering structures. The exploration will commence with a focus on studies conducted both at the model level within laboratory settings and on real cases. Subsequently, the discussion will extend to encompass the characterization and monitoring of the bridge's main elements: slab, beam, and pillar. By delving into these scientific experiences, this paper intends to provide valuable insights into the efficacy and applicability of GPR in assessing and ensuring the structural integrity of bridges. This paper provides a concise survey of the existing literature on the application of Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) in the assessment of bridges and viaducts constructed with masonry and reinforced concrete, taking into account papers of journal articles and proceedings available on open databases. Various approaches employed in both laboratory and field settings will be explored and juxtaposed. Additionally, this paper delves into discussions on novel processing and visualization approaches, shedding light on advancements in techniques for interpreting GPR data in the context of bridge and viaduct evaluations. The paper deals with the results of an archaeo-geophysical approach adopted for the study and the reconstruction of the architectural plan of the medieval monastery of San Pietro a Cellaria in Calvello (Basilicata, Southern Italy). The monastery is a remarkable witness to Benedectine architecture of the 12-13th century in Basilicata, built by monks of the Congregation of S. Maria di Pulsano, who were active mainly in southern Italy. The historical data and the diachronic architectural study, based on the analysis of building techniques, provide evidence for a long and intense history, during which the monastery underwent several architectural changes, including the demolition of buildings and the superposition of other constructional elements. The only preserved medieval remains are a church with a nave; the adjacent structures are more recent. This preliminary data prompted a research project to shed new light on the as yet unknown history of the medieval monastery. Specifically, a remote sensing approach around the monastery including aerial survey by unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), ground-penetrating radar (GPR) and geomagnetic survey in gradiometric configuration (MAG), was adopted in order to verify the possible existence of buried masonry structures and other possible features of archaeological interest, including channels and aqueducts. The GPR time slices were constructed from closely spaced parallel profiles. The time slices, computed by averaging radar reflections over vertical time windows several nanoseconds thick, are used to map subsoil features associated with the structures, probably of anthropogenic origin. To facilitate the interpretation of the results, a threedimensional image was constructed using closely spaced parallel profiles, which are linearly interpolated. The MAG survey was carried in gradiometer configuration, in order to study magnetic properties of the shallow subsoil. Ground-penetrating radar gives details about archaeological structures in a limited area where survey was possible, while gradiometer survey confirms GPR results and improves archaeological knowledge in the areas where GPR survey was impossible. This multi-sensor remote sensing program revealed a wide variety of archaeological features of interest, which may be targeted accurately with excavations in the future.

The coastal carbonate Apulian aquifers, located in southern Italy, feed several coastal fresh springs and constitute the main local source of high quality water. The Santa Cesarea Terme cave system is almost unique case of hypogenic coastal spring caves, located along the Adriatic Sea coastline and hosting spring coastal outflow of mixed groundwater (from 22°C to 33°C) mainly of thermal groundwater due to infiltration offshore, in the sea bottom, and pure fresh groundwater due rainfall infiltration. Thermal springs and the outflow system are strictly controlled by both the discontinuity network and the karst processes involving the foreland environment. Detailed geoelectrical prospecting were carried out to bound the upflow continental area of this system, considering the geoelectrical effects of deep water mixing with different salinity and temperature close the Adriatic coast.

Monte Torretta (Pietragalla, PZ) represents one of the most interesting and less known settlements of ancient Lucania. The site was investigated in the last 50 years by several archaeological activities, but no result has been published so far. In order to study and disseminate the archaeological value of the site, the Université Paris 1 Panthéon‐Sorbonne and the Humboldt‐Universität zu Berlin has established the joint Pietragalla Project. The project is based on a multidisciplinary approach, which aims at studying the settlement and at recovering the lost information obtained by the previous archaeological works. The first geophysical activities conducted on the site offer important results, which increase the knowledge of the site and will help the archaeologists in their future investigation. Through the comparison and integration of different geophysical methodologies, including ground penetrating radar, electrical resistivity tomography and geomagnetic measurements, various information was obtained in proximity of the fortification walls and the two main gates of the site. Moreover, geological and geomorphological interpretations highlighted important information on the archaeological site. The obtained results show the importance of geophysical activities in a context strongly damaged by rural activities of the last century. From an archaeological point of view, the geophysical surveys conducted in 2017 and 2018 show a dense building activity within the area enclosed by the walls. Thanks to these results, we are now able to understand the settlement pattern in the longue durée, at the least for the western part of the infra‐muros area. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
