Abstract

While theories postulating a dual cognitive system take hold, quantitative confirmations are still needed to understand and identify interactions between the two systems or conflict events. Eye movements are among the most direct markers of the individual attentive load and may serve as an important proxy of information. In this work we propose a computational method, within a modified visual version of the well-known Stroop test, for the identification of different tasks and potential conflicts events between the two systems through the collection and processing of data related to eye movements. A statistical analysis shows that the selected variables can characterize the variation of attentive load within different scenarios. Moreover, we show that Machine Learning techniques allow to distinguish between different tasks with a good classification accuracy and to investigate more in depth the gaze dynamics., Comment: 11 pages, 2 figures, 1 tables

Abstract

The Stroop test evaluates the ability to inhibit cognitive interference. This interference occurs when the processing of onestimulus characteristic affects the simultaneous processing of another attribute of the same stimulus. Eye movements are anindicator of the individual attention load required for inhibiting cognitive interference. We used an eye tracker to collecteye movements data from more than 60 subjects each performing four different but similar tasks (some with cognitiveinterference and some without). After the extraction of features related to fixations, saccades and gaze trajectory, wetrained different Machine Learning models to recognize tasks performed in the different conditions (i.e. with interference,without interference). The models achieved good classification performances when distinguishing between similar tasksperformed with or without cognitive interference. This suggests the presence of characterizing patterns common amongsubjects, despite of the individual variability of visual behavior. The results open up interesting investigations.

Abstract

This paper investigates the effectiveness of Neural Circuit Policies (NCPs) compared to Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) networks in forecasting time series data for energy production and consumption in the context of predictive maintenance. Utilizing a dataset generated from the energy production and consumption data of a Tuscan company specialized in food refrigeration, we simulate a scenario where the company employs a 60 kWh storage system and calculate the battery charge and discharge policies to assess potential cost reductions and increased self-consumption of produced energy. Our findings demonstrate that NCPs outperform LSTM networks by leveraging underlying physical models, offering superior predictive maintenance solutions for energy consumption and production. Abstract

The circular and linear magnetic birefringences corresponding to the Faraday and the Cotton-Mouton effects, respectively, have been measured in xenon at $\lambda = 1064$ nm. The experimental setup is based on time dependent magnetic fields and a high finesse Fabry-Perot cavity. Our value of the Faraday effect is the first measurement at this wavelength. It is compared to theoretical predictions. Our uncertainty of a few percent yields an agreement at better than 1$\sigma$ with the computational estimate when relativistic effects are taken into account. Concerning the Cotton-Mouton effect, our measurement, the second ever published at $\lambda = 1064$ nm, agrees at better than $1\sigma$ with theoretical predictions. We also compare our error budget with those established for other experimental published values.

Abstract

We report a copper‐catalyzed reductive aldol addition to aldehydes and ketones, with pinacolborane as stoichiometric reductant, that results in the generation of stereodefined syn‐aldol products. Cyclic, acyclic, fused and spirocyclic aldols bearing contiguous stereocenters are obtained with excellent yields and diastereoselectivities. Moreover, enantioselective reactions could be carried out with cycloalkenones to deliver aldols bearing three contiguous stereocenters and with up to 98 % ee. Computations reveal that the enolborate intermediate undergoes the syn‐aldol reaction via a twist‐boat transition state that is stabilized by non‐classical hydrogen bonding interactions. Abstract

Unexpectedly facile dearomative intramolecular (4+3) cycloadditions of thiophenes with epoxy enolsilanes, providing sulfur‐bridged cycloadducts, are reported. A total of fifteen thiophene substrates have been found to undergo (4+3) cycloaddition smoothly to produce endo and exo (4+3) adducts in yields of up to 83 % with moderate to good diastereoselectivity. Complete conservation of enantiomeric purity was observed when the optically enriched epoxide was used. The desulfurizing transformations of the sulfur‐bridged skeleton of the cycloadducts provide functionalized 6,7‐fused bicyclic frameworks consisting of 1,3‐cycloheptadiene subunits. Density functional theory calculations reveal the origins of the facile dearomatization of thiophenes in these (4+3) cycloadditions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Pembrolizumab has received approval as a first-line treatment for unresectable/metastatic triple-negative breast cancer (mTNBC) with a PD-L1 combined positive score (CPS) of ≥ 10. However, assessing CPS in mTNBC poses challenges. Firstly, it represents a novel analysis for breast pathologists. Secondly, the heterogeneity of PD-L1 expression in mTNBC further complicates the assessment. Lastly, the lack of standardized assays and staining platforms adds to the complexity. In KEYNOTE trials, PD-L1 expression was evaluated using the IHC 22C3 pharmDx kit as a companion diagnostic test. However, both the 22C3 pharmDx and VENTANA PD-L1 (SP263) assays are validated for CPS assessment. Consequently, assay-platform choice, staining conditions, and scoring methods can significantly impact the testing outcomes. This consensus paper aims to discuss the intricacies of PD-L1 CPS testing in mTNBC and provide practical recommendations for pathologists. Additionally, we present findings from a nationwide Italian survey elucidating the state-of-the-art in PD-L1 CPS testing in mTNBC.

Abstract

Introduction: Malassezia is a major component of the skin microbiome, a lipophilic symbiotic organism of the mammalian skin, which can switch to opportunistic pathogens triggering multiple dermatological disorders in humans and animals. This phenomenon is favored by endogenous and exogenous host predisposing factors, which may switch Malassezia from a commensal to a pathogenic phenotype. Area covered: This review summarizes and discusses the most recent literature on the pathogenesis of Malassezia yeasts, which ultimately results in skin disorders with different clinical presentation. A literature search of Malassezia pathogenesis was performed via PubMed and Google scholar (up to May 2023), using the following keywords: Pathogenesis and Malassezia;host risk factors and Malassezia, Malassezia and skin disorders; Malassezia and virulence factors: Malassezia and metabolite production; Immunology and Malassezia. Expert opinion: Malassezia yeasts can maintain skin homeostasis being part of the cutaneous mycobiota; however, when the environmental or host conditions change, these yeasts are endowed with a remarkable plasticity and adaptation by modifying their metabolism and thus contributing to the appearance or aggravation of human and animal skin disorders.
