In this paper, we present a unit cell showing a band-gap in the lower acoustic domain. The corresponding metamaterial is made up of a periodic arrangement of this unit cell. We rigorously show that the relaxed micromorphic model can be used for metamaterials' design at large scales as soon as suficiently large specimens are considered. We manufacture the metamaterial via metal etching procedures applied to a titanium plate so as to show that its production for realistic applications is viable. Experimental tests are also carried out confirming that the metamaterials' response is in good agreement with the theoretical design. In order to show that our micromorphic model opens unprecedented possibilities in metastructural design, we conceive a finite-size structure that is able to focus elastic energy in a confined region, thus enabling its possible subsequent re-use. Indeed, thanks to the introduction of a well-posed set of micromorphic boundary conditions, we can combine different metamaterials and classical Cauchy materials in such a way that the elastic energy produced by a source of vibrations is focused in specific collection points. The design of this structure would have not been otherwise possible (via e.g., direct simulations), due to the large dimensions of the metastructure, couting hundreds of unit cells.

Physics - Classical Physics - Abstract
Positive definiteness and symmetry of the constitutive tensors describing a second-gradient elastic (SGE) material, which is energetically equivalent to a hexagonal planar lattice made up of axially deformable bars, are analyzed by exploiting the closed form-expressions obtained in part I of the present study in the \lq condensed' form. It is shown that, while the first-order approximation leads to an isotropic Cauchy material, a second-order identification procedure provides an equivalent model exhibiting non-locality, non-centrosymmetry, and anisotropy. The derivation of the constitutive properties for the SGE from those of the \lq condensed' one (obtained by considering a quadratic remote displacement which generates stress states satisfying equilibrium) is presented. Comparisons between the mechanical responses of the periodic lattice and of the equivalent SGE material under simple shear and uniaxial strain show the efficacy of the proposed identification procedure and therefore validate the proposed constitutive model. This model reveals that, at higher-order, a lattice material can be made equivalent to a second-gradient elastic material exhibiting an internal length, a finding which is now open for applications in micromechanics., Comment: 25 pages, 11 figures

Physics - Classical Physics - Abstract
A second-gradient elastic (SGE) material is identified as the homogeneous solid equivalent to a periodic planar lattice characterized by a hexagonal unit cell, which is made up of three different linear elastic bars ordered in a way that the hexagonal symmetry is preserved and hinged at each node, so that the lattice bars are subject to pure axial strain while bending is excluded. Closed form-expressions for the identified non-local constitutive parameters are obtained by imposing the elastic energy equivalence between the lattice and the continuum solid, under remote displacement conditions having a dominant quadratic component. In order to generate equilibrated stresses, in the absence of body forces, the applied remote displacement has to be constrained, thus leading to the identification in a \lq condensed' form of a higher-order solid, so that imposition of further constraints becomes necessary to fully quantify the equivalent continuum. The identified SGE material reduces to an equivalent Cauchy material only in the limit of vanishing side length of hexagonal unit cell. The analysis of positive definiteness and symmetry of the equivalent constitutive tensors, the derivation of the second-gradient elastic properties from those of the higher-order solid in the \lq condensed' definition, and a numerical validation of the identification scheme are deferred to Part II of this study., Comment: 23 pages, 5 figures

- Abstract
This paper describes the participation of the research laboratory MIND, at the University of Milano-Bicocca, in the SemEval 2023 task related to Learning With Disagreements (Le-Wi-Di). The main goal is to identify the level of agreement/disagreement from a collection of textual datasets with different characteristics in terms of style, language, and task. The proposed approach is grounded on the hypothesis that the disagreement between annotators could be grasped by the uncertainty that a model, based on several linguistic characteristics, could have on the prediction of a given gold label.

- Abstract
Warning: This paper contains examples of language and images which may be offensive. Misogyny is a form of hate against women and has been spreading exponentially through the Web, especially on social media platforms. Hateful content towards women can be conveyed not only by text but also using visual and/or audio sources or their combination, highlighting the necessity to address it from a multimodal perspective. One of the predominant forms of multimodal content against women is represented by memes, which are images characterized by pictorial content with an overlaying text introduced a posteriori. Its main aim is originally to be funny and/or ironic, making misogyny recognition in memes even more challenging. In this paper, we investigated 4 unimodal and 3 multimodal approaches to determine which source of information contributes more to the detection of misogynous memes. Moreover, a bias estimation technique is proposed to identify specific elements that compose a meme that could lead to unfair models, together with a bias mitigation strategy based on Bayesian Optimization. The proposed method is able to push the prediction probabilities towards the correct class for up to 61.43% of the cases. Finally, we identified the most challenging archetypes of memes that are still far to be properly recognized, highlighting the most relevant open research directions.

- Abstract
With the increasing influence of social media platforms, it has become crucial to develop automated systems capable of detecting instances of sexism and other disrespectful and hateful behaviors to promote a more inclusive and respectful online environment. Nevertheless, these tasks are considerably challenging considering different hate categories and the author’s intentions, especially under the learning with disagreements regime. This paper describes AI-UPV team’s participation in the EXIST (sEXism Identification in Social neTworks) Lab at CLEF 2023 [1, 2]. The proposed approach aims at addressing the task of sexism identification and characterization under the learning with disagreements paradigm by training directly from the data with disagreements, without using any aggregated label. Yet, performances considering both soft and hard evaluations are reported. The proposed system uses large language models (i.e., mBERT and XLM-RoBERTa) and ensemble strategies for sexism identification and classification in English and Spanish. In particular, our system is articulated in three different pipelines. The ensemble approach outperformed the individual large language models obtaining the best performances both adopting a soft and a hard label evaluation. This work describes the participation in all the three EXIST tasks, considering a soft evaluation, it obtained fourth place in Task 2 at EXIST and first place in Task 3, with the highest ICM-Soft of −2.32 and a normalized ICM-Soft of 0.79. The source code of our approaches is publicly available at https://github.com/AngelFelipeMP/Sexism-LLM-Learning-With-Disagreement.

Condensed Matter - Materials Science - Abstract
We have measured the transformation of pseudomorphic Ni films on Pd(100) into their bulk fcc phase as a function of the film thickness. We made use of x-ray diffraction and x-ray induced photoemission to study the evolution of the Ni film and its interface with the substrate. The growth of a pseudomorphic film with tetragonally strained face centered symmetry (fct) has been observed by out-of-plane x-ray diffraction up to a maximum thickness of 10 Ni layers (two of them intermixed with the substrate), where a new fcc bulk-like phase is formed. After the formation of the bulk-like Ni domains, we observed the pseudomorphic fct domains to disappear preserving the number of layers and their spacing. The phase transition thus proceeds via lateral growth of the bulk-like phase within the pseudomorphic one, i.e. the bulk-like fcc domains penetrate down to the substrate when formed. This large depth of the walls separating the domains of different phases is also indicated by the strong increase of the intermixing at the substrate-film interface, which starts at the onset of the transition and continues at even larger thickness. The bulk-like fcc phase is also slightly strained; its relaxation towards the orthomorphic lattice structure proceeds slowly with the film thickness, being not yet completed at the maximum thickness presently studied of 30 Angstrom (i.e. about 17 layers)., Comment: 8 pages, 7 figures

General Relativity and Quantum Cosmology - Abstract
The paper shows that, conceptually and operationally, the speed of light as measured locally in the inertial comoving frame of a point on the rim of a rotating disk, is different from the one measured globally for a round trip along the rim, obtained dividing the length of the rim (as measured in the ''relative space'' of the disk) by the time of flight of the light beam (as measured by a clock at rest on the disk). As a consequence, contrary to some recent claims, the anisotropy found in the global value, obtained by the above procedure, in no way conflicts with the local isotropy, and the internal consistency of the special relativity theory remains unchallenged., Comment: LATEX, 8 pages, to be published in Foundations of Physics Letters

General Relativity and Quantum Cosmology - Abstract
It is often taken for granted that on board a rotating disk it is possible to operate a \QTR{it}{global}3+1 splitting of space-time, such that both lengths and time intervals are \QTR{it}{uniquely} defined in terms of measurements performed by real rods and real clocks at rest on the platform. This paper shows that this assumption, although widespread and apparently trivial, leads to an anisotropy of the velocity of two light beams travelling in opposite directions along the rim of the disk; which in turn implies some recently pointed out paradoxical consequences undermining the self-consistency of the Special Theory of Relativity (SRT). A correct application of the SRT solves the problem and recovers complete internal consistency for the theory. As an immediate consequence, it is shown that the Sagnac effect only depends on the non homogeneity of time on the platform and has nothing to do with any anisotropy of the speed of light along the rim of the disk, contrary to an incorrect but widely supported idea., Comment: Latex, 2 figures

Astrophysics ,General Relativity and Quantum Cosmology - Abstract
In the paper we calculate the frequency shift induced on a photon by the interaction with a low density electronic plasma. The technique is the standard perturbation theory of quantum electrodynamics, taking into account the many body character of the plasma. The shift in non relativistic approximation is shown to be blue. Besides the quantum shift also the known classical effects and the correct temperature dependence are obtained. Finally the limits of the approximations used are discussed., Comment: To appear on the May issue of PRE; TCILatex

- Abstract
Misogyny is a form of hate against women and has been spreading exponentially through the Web, especially in social media platforms. Hateful contents may be expressed through popular communication tools, like memes. A meme is an image characterised by a pictorial content with an overlaying text introduced a posteriori, and its main aim is originally to be funny and/or ironic. However, the use of memes to convey misogynous messages has increased and thus an automatic detection of these contents seems to be necessary to counteract this phenomenon. This task is particularly challenging, having that (1) different memes can present the same image, but different texts and vice versa, (2) two memes with the same image but different texts can convey a misogynous and not misogynous message, respectively, (3) misogyny can be expressed by image alone, text alone or their combination. In this paper both unimodal and multimodal approaches are investigated whose classifiers are trained and tested on a dataset of in the wild memes, which present both experts and perceived labels. The proposed multimodal approach provides better results compared to the unimodal ones and the VisualBERT state-of-the-art benchmark.

- Abstract
The paper describes the SemEval-2022 Task 5: Multimedia Automatic Misogyny Identification (MAMI),which explores the detection of misogynous memes on the web by taking advantage of available texts and images. The task has been organised in two related sub-tasks: the first one is focused on recognising whether a meme is misogynous or not (Sub-task A), while the second one is devoted to recognising types of misogyny (Sub-task B). MAMI has been one of the most popular tasks at SemEval-2022 with more than 400 participants, 65 teams involved in Sub-task A and 41 in Sub-task B from 13 countries. The MAMI challenge received 4214 submitted runs (of which 166 uploaded on the leader-board), denoting an enthusiastic participation for the proposed problem. The collection and annotation is described for the task dataset. The paper provides an overview of the systems proposed for the challenge, reports the results achieved in both sub-tasks and outlines a description of the main errors for a comprehension of the systems capabilities and for detailing future research perspectives.

- Abstract
In this paper we present a benchmark dataset generated as part of a project for automatic identification of misogyny within online content, which focuses in particular on memes. The benchmark here described is composed of 800 memes collected from the most popular social media platforms, such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Reddit, and consulting websites dedicated to collection and creation of memes. To gather misogynistic memes, specific keywords that refer to misogynistic content have been considered as search criterion, considering different manifestations of hatred against women, such as body shaming, stereotyping, objectification and violence. In parallel, memes with no misogynist content have been manually downloaded from the same web sources. Among all the collected memes, three domain experts have selected a dataset of 800 memes equally balanced between misogynistic and non-misogynistic ones. This dataset has been validated through a crowdsourcing platform, involving 60 subjects for the labelling process, in order to collect three evaluations for each instance. Two further binary labels have been collected from both the experts and the crowdsourcing platform, for memes evaluated as misogynistic, concerning aggressiveness and irony. Finally for each meme, the text has been manually transcribed. The dataset provided is thus composed of the 800 memes, the labels given by the experts and those obtained by the crowdsourcing validation, and the transcribed texts. This data can be used to approach the problem of automatic detection of misogynistic content on the Web relying on both textual and visual cues, facing phenomenons that are growing every day such as cybersexism and technology-facilitated violence.

A measurement of the inclusive jet production in proton-proton collisions at the LHC at √s = 13 TeV is presented. The double-differential cross sections are measured as a function of the jet transverse momentum pT and the absolute jet rapidity |y|. The anti-kT clustering algorithm is used with distance parameter of 0.4 (0.7) in a phase space region with jet pT from 97 GeV up to 3.1 TeV and |y| < 2.0. Data collected with the CMS detector are used, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 36.3 fb−1 (33.5 fb−1). The measurement is used in a comprehensive QCD analysis at next-to-next-to-leading order, which results in significant improvement in the accuracy of the parton distributions in the proton. Simultaneously, the value of the strong coupling constant at the Z boson mass is extracted as αS(mZ) = 0.1170±0.0019. For the first time, these data are used in a standard model effective field theory analysis at next-to-leading order, where parton distributions and the QCD parameters are extracted simultaneously with imposed constraints on the Wilson coefficient c1 of 4-quark contact interactions., Individuals have received support from the Marie-Curie programme and the European Research Council and Horizon 2020 Grant, contract Nos. 675440, 724704, 752730, 758316, 765710, 824093, 884104, and COST Action CA16108 (European Union); the Leventis Foundation; the Alfred P. ddc:620 ,Engineering & allied operations - Abstract
The measurement of material resistance against crack propagation is mostly performed with (in principle) one-dimensional cracks as usual for standard test specimens as for instance DCB (Double Cantilever Beam) specimens. Such a crack exhibits a constant stress intensity factor along the crack front that allows simple computations of crack extension. In the case of 2-dimensional cracks, e.g. semi-elliptical surface cracks, the calculation of strength and service life under subcritical crack growth is considerably more complicated. The main reason for this is the fact that the stress intensity factor changes along the crack front. In this report, averaged K-factors for virtual crack propagation in both axial directions of the semi-ellipse are determined. For this purpose, virtual crack area increments according to Cruse and Besuner are used. The stress intensity factors for the deepest point of the crack and the surface terminating points are given by polynomials obtained via curve fitting of the numerical results. In addition, the averaged K-factors under concentrated forces were estimated.

In previous reports, we dealt with the SIF computations of semielliptical surface cracks introduced in glass specimens by grinding. It can simply be shown that subcritical extension of such cracks must result in a reduction of stresses applied to the specimen. We apply this effect on tensile tests and on torsion tests by Aaldenberg et al. carried out on cylindrical specimens at temperatures between 550°C and 700°C in normal lab air environment. The torsion moments Mt measured by Aaldenberg et al. decreased with time t for a constant drill angle. This effect was interpreted by Aaldenberg et al. as a proof for a relaxation effect by the presence of molecular water. In the present report, we discuss the possibility that the reduction of the torsion moment is caused by subcritical crack growth that results in comparable effects.

When water penetrates into silica surfaces near a crack tip, it reacts with the SiO$_{2}$ network and generates hydroxyl $\equiv$SiOH. Due to the hydroxyl generation, silica expands and gives rise for swelling stresses. The consequence is a fracture mechanics shielding stress intensity factor K$_{sh}$

In this report the general influence of different elastic modules ahead of a crack tip and in the bulk on the stress intensity factors will be discussed again. From the FE results obtained in Report [1], and the theoretical solution by Merkle [3] K = K$_{appl}$$\sqrt{\frac{E}{E_{0}}}$ it becomes clear that the FE-results for relative zone sizes $\omega$/a >0 must deviate from the exact solution but are also in rather good agreement with the theoretic results for finite $\omega$/a. In this report also results are compiled for cracks fully embedded in zones with reduced module. Such cracks show stress intensity factors completely different from a $\sqrt{ E/E_{0}}$ -dependency. Nevertheless, it can be concluded that the stress intensity factors on the basis of the J-integral agree with those obtained by COD evaluation. As an approximate description of the observed E/E$_{0}$-dependency we suggest $\frac{K}{K_{appl}}$ $\cong$$\frac{2E}{E+E_{0}}$

ddc:620 ,Engineering & allied operations - Abstract
In an earlier Report we dealt with COD-measurements on water-soaked cracks as are available from literature. In this early note, the effect of damage by the water-glass reaction was addressed and for the COD-field the J-integral was adopted for zones ahead of a crack tip showing an elastic module different from that of the bulk. In the present study we apply results of Finite Element (FE) computations to the same problem. From our FE-computations on crack-flank displacements it was found that the effect of a reduced Young’s modulus is visible only in a crack-tip distance as is comparable with the height of the crack-tip zones. The purely elastic calculations by FE lead to COD profiles, which seem to result in a blunting behavior. This suggests a typical elastic-plastic material behavior to the viewer.

In a study by Proctor et al. a strength reduction was observed due to surface damaging in humid air at high temperatures. The strength tests on these damaged specimens were carried out in normal lab atmosphere. Unfortunately, these tests are affected by subcritical crack growth. In the present report we show on the strength results obtained in humid air, in which way these data can be used to determine the inert strength of the damaged surface. Proctor et al. provided images of the surface defects and identified, localized corrosion centers. In our report we show how the effects of these local corrosion defects can be handled fracture mechanically.

Water reacting with silica causes the generation of hydroxyl SiOH accompanied by a volume or swelling expansion. The principle of LeChatelier ensures that the hydroxyl concentration increases with increasing externally applied stresses. From the analysis in [1,2] it becomes obvious that a) the hydroxyl concentration must depend on the multi-axiality of the applied stresses, and b) that the swelling effect is anisotropic. On the basis of the results in [1,2] it will be shown that under torsion loading the strongest effects on stress-enhanced hydroxyl generation and swelling strains should occur, although this stress state shows a disappearing hydrostatic stress term.
