17. Elderly alcoholics in the Edinburgh psychiatric services.

Abstract

Thirty-one elderly alcoholics diagnosed in the Edinburgh psychiatric service during a 5-month period were interviewed and compared with 30, sex-matched young alcoholics. The two groups were very similar, except in terms of diagnoses of chronic organic brain disease, and the few differences found may reflect age or generational differences. It is suggested that elderly alcoholics, with the exception of those with chronic organic brain disease, may be treated with young alcoholics in general psychiatry and specialist alcoholism services, while those who have chronic organic brain disease may be better treated in a psychogeriatric service. Abstract

Twenty-three patients who believed they suffered from food allergy were studied at the time of their presentation to an allergy clinic. The presence of organic food hypersensitivity could not be confirmed in 19 who attributed common neurotic symptoms to allergy; this group was almost identical, in terms of psychiatric symptomatology and general characteristics, with a group of new psychiatric out-patient referrals. There was no evidence of psychiatric disorder of food-related psychological symptoms in four patients with proven food-related atopic symptoms. 21. Alcoholism and the Drunkenness Offender in a Scottish Burgh Police Court

Abstract

Fifty males were interviewed following their appearance on charges of drunkenness at a Scottish Burgh Police Court. The sample comprised mainly unemployed Scots from the lower social classes who were either separated from their wives or had never married. There were 5 first offenders and the rest of the sample had previous convictions for drunkenness and/or other minor offences. Twenty-nine were physically dependent on alcohol, 16 had a psychological dependence on alcohol, and the remaining 5 were not alcoholics. Although two-thirds expressed a desire for help, the city was lacking in detoxification, counselling and rehabilitation facilities for alcoholics.
