In recent years there have emerged various ideas to create and control topological excitations in superconducting devices. Notably, nontrivial Chern bands were predicted to exist in conventional multiterminal Josephson junctions, but the Chern number is yet to be experimentally verified, and the pathway towards feasible quantum hardware applications is unclear. Here we show how generic multiterminal circuits can be expressed as gyrator networks with quantized gyration conductance, giving rise to anyonic excitations carrying $q/p$ fractional fluxes ($q,p$ integer), measurable via a fractional Aharonov-Casher phase. The magnitude of interactions between the anyons depends on the flatness of the topological bands, prompting us to investigate circuit-specific band-engineering techniques. Circular scattering in three-terminal quantum dot chains gives rise to a flat topological ground state, where disorder mitigates Chern number fluctuations and the quasiparticle continuum provides a work-around for known limitations to create nontrivial flat bands. Further band-engineering strategies are presented where the superconducting phase is scrambled either via parallelization or dissipative phase transitions. We provide concepts for error correction protocols, and quantum simulations of interacting fermionic (or generally anyonic) many-body systems -- notably, introducing the possibility to mimic fractional quantum Hall physics or to implement local fermionic models that explicitly break the Wigner superselection rule. The latter indicates that a full understanding of multiterminal circuits will require grappling with a virtually unexplored class of parity-breaking quantum field theories., Comment: 35 pages, 11 figures

There has been considerable effort to simulate quantum gravity features in solid state systems, such as analog black holes or wormholes. However, superconducting circuits have so far received only limited attention in this regard. Moreover, for quantum superpositions of spacetime geometries - a highly contentious notion within the quantum gravity community itself - there currently exist no solid state blueprints. We here show how quantum circuit hardware can implement a variety of classical and quantum spacetime geometries on lattices, by both using established circuit elements and introducing new ones. We demonstrate the possibility of a metric sharply changing within a single lattice point, thus entering a regime where the spacetime curvature itself is trans-Planckian, and the Hawking temperature ill-defined. In fact, our approach suggests that stable, thermal event horizons are incompatible with strictly discrete lattice models. We thus propose to directly probe the evaporation of a wormhole by tracking the accumulation of charge and phase quantum fluctuations over short time scales, which are a robust signature even in the presence of a dissipative environment. Moreover, we present a loop-hole for the typical black/while hole ambiguity in lattice simulations: the existence of exceptional points in the dispersion relation allows for the creation of pure black (or white) hole horizons - at the expense of radically changing the interior wormhole dynamics. Finally, based on multistable Josephson junctions, we introduce the notion of quantum inductors: circuit elements that can be prepared in a superposition of different inductance values. Such inductors realise regions with a quantum superposition of analog spacetime. The inherent complexity of system-bath interactions often requires making critical approximations, which we here show to have a radical influence on the renormalization group flow and the resulting phase diagram. Specifically, for the Caldeira-Leggett model Schmid and Bulgadaev (SB) predicted a phase transition, whose experimental verification in resistive superconducting circuits is currently hotly debated. For normal metal and Josephson junction array resistors, we show that the mapping to Caldeira-Leggett is only exact when artificially decompactifying the superconducting phase. Retaining phase compactness immediately leads to a phase diagram depending on four instead of two parameters. While we still find an SB-like transition in the transmon regime, the critical parameter is controlled exclusively by the capacitive coupling. In contrast, the Cooper pair box maps to the anisotropic Kondo model, where a pseudo-ferromagnetic phase is not allowed for regular electrostatic interactions., Comment: 10 pages, 2 figures. Precise in-situ control of system parameters is indispensable for all quantum hardware applications. The capacitance in a circuit, however, is usually a simple consequence of electrostatics, and thus quite literally cast in stone. We here propose a way to control the charging energy of a given island by exploiting recently predicted Chern insulator physics in common Cooper-pair transistors, where the capacitance switches between discrete values given by the Chern number. Controlling quasiparticle dynamics can improve the performance of superconducting devices. For example, it has been demonstrated effective in increasing lifetime and stability of superconducting qubits. Here we study how to optimize the placement of normal-metal traps in transmon-type qubits. When the trap size increases beyond a certain characteristic length, the details of the geometry and trap position, and even the number of traps, become important. We discuss for some experimentally relevant examples how to shorten the decay time of the excess quasiparticle density. Moreover, we show that a trap in the vicinity of a Josephson junction can reduce the steady-state quasiparticle density near that junction, thus suppressing the quasiparticle-induced relaxation rate of the qubit. Such a trap also reduces the impact of fluctuations in the generation rate of quasiparticles, rendering the qubit more stable., Comment: 16 pages, 7 figures; to appear in Phys. Rev. Applied

The presence of quasiparticles in superconducting qubits emerges as an intrinsic constraint on their coherence. While it is difficult to prevent the generation of quasiparticles, keeping them away from active elements of the qubit provides a viable way of improving the device performance. Here we develop theoretically and validate experimentally a model for the effect of a single small trap on the dynamics of the excess quasiparticles injected in a transmon-type qubit. The model allows one to evaluate the time it takes to evacuate the injected quasiparticles from the transmon as a function of trap parameters. With the increase of the trap size, this time decreases monotonically, saturating at the level determined by the quasiparticles diffusion constant and the qubit geometry. The fabrication of single atom transistors paved the way for electronics based on single dopants. Recently the spectrum of a single dopant was measured electrically by coupling two such devices. The next step towards promising functionalities for future nanoelectronics consists in manipulating a single electron over two dopants. Here we demonstrate electron pumping through two phosphorus donors in series implanted in a silicon nanowire. While quantized pumping is achieved in the low frequency adiabatic regime, we observe remarkable features at higher frequency when the charge transfer is limited by the different tunneling rates. The transitions between quantum states are modeled involving a Landau-Zener transition, allowing to reproduce in detail the characteristic signatures observed in the non-adiabatic regime.

We investigate the transient effects occurring in a molecular quantum dot described by an Anderson-Holstein Hamiltonian which is instantly coupled to two fermionic leads biased by a finite voltage. In the limit of weak electron-phonon interaction, we use perturbation theory to determine the time-dependence of the dot population and the average current. The limit of strong coupling is accessed by means of a self-consistent time-dependent mean-field approximation. These comple- mentary approaches allow us to investigate the dynamics of the inelastic effects occurring when the applied bias voltage exceeds the phonon frequency and the emergence of bistability., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures
