Abstract

There is currently a major trend to hairpin-winding motors for small and medium drives with increased power, specifically more torque density in the automotive industry. Practically all large players in the field either already use this winding technology or have announced doing so soon. However, hairpins, bar windings, and other segmented winding techniques are not purely a material and production issue. Instead their application to small drives influences all aspects of the design of machines, which are currently explored and studied by the industry. These range from not obvious gaps in the theory, parameter studies for maxima of efficiency, possible as well as advantageous winding schemes, thermal design, and ways to control ac losses to specific materials and process difficulties. Despite the apparent novelty of the trend, however, designers could revisit a widely forgotten knowledge base of more than 100 years for many of those questions. This old knowledge base and the understanding that many recently presented concepts have been developed earlier may speed up the technological development and appear to be a key to further innovation. Instead, many problems need to be solved again and technologies re-invented. Abstract

The refractory period of cardiac tissue can be quantitatively described using strength-interval (SI) curves. The information captured in SI curves is pertinent to the design of anti-arrhythmic devices including pacemakers and implantable cardioverter defibrillators. As computational cardiac modelling becomes more prevalent, it is feasible to consider the generation of computationally derived SI curves as a supplement or precursor to curves that are experimentally derived. It is beneficial, therefore, to examine the profiles of the SI curves produced by different cardiac tissue models to determine whether some models capture the refractory period more accurately than others. In this study, we compare the unipolar SI curves of two tissue models: the current state-of-the-art bidomain model and the recently developed extracellular-membrane-intracellular (EMI) model. The EMI model's resolution of individual cell structure makes it a more detailed model than the bidomain model, which forgoes the structure of individual cardiac cells in favour of treating them homogeneously as a continuum. We find that the resulting SI curves elucidate differences between the models, including that the behaviour of the EMI model is noticeably closer to the refractory behaviour of experimental data compared to that of the bidomain model. 3. A Multi-Segment, Soft Growing Robot with Selective Steering

Abstract

Everting, soft growing vine robots benefit from reduced friction with their environment, which allows them to navigate challenging terrain. Vine robots can use air pouches attached to their sides for lateral steering. However, when all pouches are serially connected, the whole robot can only perform one constant curvature in free space. It must contact the environment to navigate through obstacles along paths with multiple turns. This work presents a multi-segment vine robot that can navigate complex paths without interacting with its environment. This is achieved by a new steering method that selectively actuates each single pouch at the tip, providing high degrees of freedom with few control inputs. A small magnetic valve connects each pouch to a pressure supply line. A motorized tip mount uses an interlocking mechanism and motorized rollers on the outer material of the vine robot. As each valve passes through the tip mount, a permanent magnet inside the tip mount opens the valve so the corresponding pouch is connected to the pressure supply line at the same moment. Novel cylindrical pneumatic artificial muscles (cPAMs) are integrated into the vine robot and inflate to a cylindrical shape for improved bending characteristics compared to other state-of-the-art vine robots. The motorized tip mount controls a continuous eversion speed and enables controlled retraction. A final prototype was able to repeatably grow into different shapes and hold these shapes. We predict the path using a model that assumes a piecewise constant curvature along the outside of the multi-segment vine robot. 4. Korn's inequality in anisotropic Sobolev spaces

Abstract

Korn's inequality has been at the heart of much exciting research since its first appearance in the beginning of the 20th century. Many are the applications of this inequality to the analysis and construction of discretizations of a large variety of problems in continuum mechanics. In this paper, we prove that the classical Korn inequality holds true in {\it anisotropic Sobolev spaces}. We also prove that an extension of Korn's inequality, involving non-linear continuous maps, is valid in such spaces. Finally, we point out that another classical inequality, Poincare's inequality, also holds in anisotropic Sobolev spaces.

Abstract

The Diels-Alder cycloaddition is one of the most powerful approaches in organic synthesis and is often used in the synthesis of important pharmaceuticals. Yet, strictly controlling the stereoselectivity of the Diels-Alder reactions is challenging, and great efforts are needed to construct complex molecules with desired chirality via organocatalysis or transition-metal strategies. Nature has evolved different types of enzymes to exquisitely control cyclization stereochemistry; however, most of the reported Diels-Alderases have been shown to only facilitate the energetically favourable diastereoselective cycloadditions. Here we report the discovery and characterization of CtdP, a member of a new class of bifunctional oxidoreductase/Diels-Alderase, which was previously annotated as an NmrA-like transcriptional regulator. We demonstrate that CtdP catalyses the inherently disfavoured cycloaddition to form the bicyclo[2.2.2]diazaoctane scaffold with a strict α-anti-selectivity. Guided by computational studies, we reveal a NADP+/NADPH-dependent redox mechanism for the CtdP-catalysed inverse electron demand Diels-Alder cycloaddition, which serves as the first example of a bifunctional Diels-Alderase that utilizes this mechanism.

6. A three-dimensional model of skeletal muscle tissues

Abstract

Skeletal muscles are living tissues that can undergo large deformations in short periods of time and that can be activated to produce force. In this paper we use the principles of continuum mechanics to propose a dynamic, fully non-linear, and three-dimensional model to describe the deformation of these tissues. We model muscles as a fibre-reinforced composite and transversely isotropic material. We introduce a flexible computational framework to approximate the deformations of skeletal muscle to provide new insights into the underlying mechanics of these tissues. The model parameters and mechanical properties are obtained through experimental data and can be specified locally. A semi-implicit in time, conforming finite element in space scheme is used to approximate the solutions to the governing nonlinear dynamic model. We provide a series of numerical experiments demonstrating the application of this framework to relevant problems in biomechanics, and also discuss questions around model validation.

Abstract

Three important wine parameters: vineyard, region, and vintage year, were evaluated using fifteen Vitis vinifera L. 'Pinot noir' wines derived from the same scion clone (Pinot noir 667). These wines were produced from two vintage years (2015 and 2016) and eight different regions along the Pacific Coast of the United States. We successfully improved the classification of the selected Pinot noir wines by combining an untargeted 1D 1H NMR analysis with a targeted peptide based differential sensing array. NMR spectroscopy was used to evaluate the chemical fingerprint of the wines, whereas the peptide-based sensing array is known to mimic the senses of taste, smell, and palate texture by characterizing the phenolic profile. Multivariate and univariate statistical analyses of the combined NMR and differential sensing array dataset classified the genetically identical Pinot noir wines on the basis of distinctive metabolic signatures associated with the region of growth, vineyard, and vintage year.

10. Vote for me, not my party. Three essays on the personalization of election campaigns

Abstract

Why do candidates personalize their election campaigns, and what are the consequences of such a campaign style? As a large body of research indicates, many democracies worldwide are experiencing a shift towards a greater focus on individual politicians rather than political parties. This trend, often referred to as the “personalization of politics,” highlights the increasing prominence of individual political actors at the expense of collective identities, particularly political parties. In the context of elections, this personalization is manifested by candidates using their private lives, personal attributes, or circumstances to appeal to voters. This dissertation comprises three distinct articles investigating the phenomenon of the personalization of election campaigns. The first article examines why certain candidates opt for personalized election campaigns, drawing on existing research on campaign transformations and professionalization. Utilizing data from the Comparative Candidate Survey and employing multilevel Bayesian models, the study reveals that candidates who extensively use social media and engage professional consultants are more likely to personalize their campaigns. These findings shed light on how recent transformations in the campaign environment and In the second article, I employ an alternative approach to measure and evaluate the factors driving the personalization of election campaigns. Instead of relying on surveys of candidates, the study introduces a non-survey-based measure utilizing campaign messages on social media during the 2021 congressional election in Chile. By combining manual coding and supervised learning techniques, the study assesses the extent of personalization in campaigns and tests two hypotheses regarding the relationship between candidates and their parties. This article not only offers a valuable approach to studying the personalization of election campaigns but also provides insights into the factors driving this phenomenon in Chilean elections. The third article addresses the potential effect of personalized campaigns on candidates’ electoral success. Despite extensive research on personalization, few studies have examined its effects. By employing a novel measure of campaign personalization in Chilean elections, the study explores whether personalized campaigns increase candidates’ vote share. It argues that personalized campaigns may mitigate negative perceptions of established political parties, thereby benefiting candidates affiliated with new party labels. The evidence supports this argument, indicating that candidates from new party labels gain a greater electoral advantage from personalized campaigns compared to those from established parties. These findings offer significant implications for understanding the role of campaign personalization in democratic representation.

12. Non-destructive firmness assessment of 'SunGold' kiwifruit a three-year study.

Abstract

Kiwifruit (Actinidia chinensis var. chinensis) firmness is routinely measured in a destructive manner for decision-making purposes. Thus, a population's quality is inferred by measuring a sample from that population. Consequently, studies have investigated non-destructive techniques for measuring fruit firmness. However, most of these studies have been restricted to a single season or focused on performance over long-term storage. This work compared non-destructive compression (1 mm deformation) and acoustic stiffness with flesh firmness measured with a penetrometer across three seasons. 'SunGold' kiwifruit were harvested from 11, 9 and 3 orchards on multiple occasions in 2020, 2021 and 2022, respectively. Kiwifruit was freighted to Palmerston North and assessed on arrival. Thirty fruit per orchard were measured on lab arrival, whilst 24 fruit per orchard were stored for two weeks at 0°C prior to assessment. The non-destructive methods had a strong (r2 > 0.89–0.92) segmented correlation with flesh firmness (0.52–10 kgf). Flesh firmness could be adequately estimated with the non-destructive methods within a season. However, segmented regression performance was reduced when predicting for a season outside of the training population. Nonetheless, these non-destructive methods may be useful for estimating flesh firmness at harvest and after short-term storage (2 weeks at 0 °C). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

This paper presents the design, implementation, and validation of an on-blade sensor system for remote vibration measurement for low-capacity wind turbines. The autonomous sensor system was deployed on three wind turbines, with one of them operating in harsh weather conditions in the far south of Chile. The system recorded the acceleration response of the blades in the flapwise and edgewise directions, data that could be used for extracting the dynamic characteristics of the blades, information useful for damage diagnosis and prognosis. The proposed sensor system demonstrated reliable data acquisition and transmission from wind turbines in remote locations, proving the ability to create a fully autonomous system capable of recording data for monitoring and evaluating the state of health of wind turbine blades for extended periods without human intervention. Abstract

Increasing the power rating of electric vehicles (EV) fast charging stations to reduce charging times is considered critical to accelerate the adoption of electric vehicles. Besides increasing the power, other drivers pushing the development of EV fast chargers include the improvement of efficiency and reliability. Partial power converters (PPC) have emerged as an interesting option for some of the power converter stages in fast charging stations due to their potential to increase efficiency and power rating. However, some PPCs operate as switched autotransformers by using high frequency (HF) isolation transformers but without providing galvanic isolation. This is a drawback due to cost, size and losses introduced by the transformer. This paper presents a transformerless DC–DC Type I step‐up PPC for a DC–DC regulation converter for EV fast charging stations. The proposed converter replaces the transformer commonly used in Type I PPC by an impedance network, resulting in a more efficient, cheaper, and less complex converter option. Abstract

This paper proposes a new buck-boost flying-capacitor (FC) converter for the DC-DC stage of an Electric Vehicle (EV) fast charging station. The proposed converter is capable of delivering a wide output range of voltage to charge different battery configurations. The converter has two modes of operation, buck and boost. Thanks to this feature, the proposed converter allows higher efficiency and a wide operating range. The proposed converter is capable of supplying a voltage range from 200 V to 1000 V at its output, which shows the feasibility of occupying the converter inside a charging station that allows charging 400 V and 800 V battery systems. The average efficiency reported is over 97%. Hybrid Energy Storage Systems (HESSs) have gathered considerable interest due to their potential to achieve high energy and power density by integrating different storage technologies, such as batteries and capacitors, to name a few. Among the various topologies explored for HESSs, the multi-output multilevel converter stands out as a promising option, offering decoupled operation of the AC ports while maintaining an internal balance among the diverse storage units. Abstract

Energy storage systems (ESSs) allow improving the stability and efficiency of the electrical grids with a high penetration of renewable energy sources. Moreover, the use of Hybrid ESSs (HESSs) enables storage solutions with both high-energy and high-power densities, by combining different storage technologies such as diverse battery chemistries, ultracapacitors, or hydrogen fuel cells to name a few. In this article, an HESS-based multioutput multilevel (MOM) converter is presented. The proposed topology enables decoupled control of each ac converter voltage output. The internal switching states further allow the use of different storage units and high-quality multilevel voltage in each ac output. The mathematical model of the proposed topology and the defined operation region of the system, besides a model-predictive control strategy, are developed. Abstract

Electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure will play a critical role in decarbonization during the next decades, energizing a large share of the transportation sector. This will further increase the enabling role of power electronics converters as an energy transition technology in the widespread adoption of clean energy sources and their efficient use. However, this deep transformation comes with challenges, some of which are already unfolding, such as the slow deployment of charging infrastructure and competing charging standards, and others that will have a long-term impact if not addressed timely, such as the reliability of power converters and power system stability due to loss of system inertia, just to name a few. Nevertheless, the inherent transition toward power systems with higher penetration of power electronics and batteries, together with a layer of communications and information technologies, will also bring opportunities for more flexible and intelligent grid integration and services, which could increase the share of renewable energy in the power grid. Abstract

DC microgrids initiated the change of a paradigm regarding the concept about electrical distribution networks, especially in the context of the distributed generation associated to renewable energies. However, this new reality opens a new area of research, in which several aspects must be carefully studied. Indeed, the bipolar design is one of the principal dc microgrid configurations considering its characteristic wiring. Although holding many promising advantages, the bipolar dc microgrid has a tendency towards voltage and current imbalances due to the unequal distribution of the loads and generators between the two poles. Thus, specific power-electronic-based solutions are required to ensure the balance of these dc microgrids. Within this frame, this article gives a comprehensive review of the multiple architectures and power electronic topologies proposed to mitigate/eliminate this undesired condition. The following provides an insightful classification and discussion with the pros and cons of these solutions. This work can serve as a timely review for researcher/engineers who want to enter the voltage balancing field in the bipolar dc grids and promote the innovation of their power-electronics-enabled solutions.

Abstract

Hybrid Energy Storage Systems (HESSs) have gathered considerable interest due to their potential to achieve high energy and power density by integrating different storage technologies, such as batteries and capacitors, to name a few. Among the various topologies explored for HESSs, the multi-output multilevel converter stands out as a promising option, offering decoupled operation of the AC ports while maintaining an internal balance among the diverse storage units. In this paper, the operation and restrictions of a HESS based on a multi-output multilevel converter with a carrier-based modulation scheme are presented. The study provides compelling evidence of the correct operation of the proposed modulation scheme and highlights its advantages, including simplicity and stability. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
