7. Nitrogen recovery from intensive livestock farms using a simplified ammonia stripping process.

Abstract

The ammonia (NH3) stripping process can recover nitrogen (N) from slurry and digestates as a mineral fertilizer, but it is currently expensive and difficult to manage at the farm level. Hence, a simple process is required. This study aimed to test a modular (based on farm N surplus) slow-release NH3 stripping process at a pilot plant scale. NH3 volatilization was promoted in a closed reactor, and then, the NH3 was removed by an air stream through the reactor headspace. The NH3-loaded air was purified in a scrubber, where NH3 reacted with sulfuric acid to form ammonium sulfate (AS). In total, 11 trials were conducted using pig slurry, dairy cattle slurry, and digestates: 7 trials were carried out with the reactors heated to 40°C, 2 trials were carried out at an ambient temperature, and the other 2 trials were carried out with the addition of sodium hydroxide (NaOH). To assess the technical-economic sustainability of the pilot plant, the total ammoniacal nitrogen (TAN) removal rate, electricity consumption, acid requirements, and AS quality and costs were evaluated. The pilot plant yielded TAN recovery amounts of 45% in 2 weeks with the reactors heated to 40°C, 64% in 1 week with NaOH addition, and 25% in 2 weeks at an ambient temperature. The N concentration in the AS solution reached 85.9 g kg-1, with an average value of 35.2 g kg-1. The electricity consumption, acid requirement, and operational costs in an optimized system were approximately 0.52 kWh kgN-1 recovered, 3.5 kg pure acid kgN-1 recovered, and 0.86 € kgN-1 recovered, respectively. Compared to other technologies, the simplified stripping process is slower but with similar removal efficiencies and lower energy consumption. Abstract

Among the many inputs, nitrogen fertilizers are the main yield-limiting factor in agriculture. Liquid fractions of digestates can be a most promising substitute to synthetic nitrogen fertilizers, using little energy to turn waste into valuable fertilizers. In this study, the efficacy of five digestates from different origin (C, cow slurry; P, pig slurry; PCE, pig slurry, cow slurry, energy crops; SS, sewage sludge; W, organic fraction of municipal waste) were assessed as fertilizers for the cultivation of Lactuca sativa L., compared to traditional mineral fertilization. Digestates showed promising results as fertilizers for Lactuca sativa L., as yield and chemical parameters were overall comparable to the mineral fertilizer. Analysis of nitrogen evolution showed that most digestates showed higher nitrates in the substrates than the mineral fertilizers at earlier stages. Another topic investigated in the study is the effect of the digestates on the bacterial populations of the growth substrate, investigated through quantification and sequencing of 16S gene. These results varied based on the digestate considered, but, in general, an increase in biodiversity could be linked to use of digestates. These results suggest that digestates might become an alternative to mineral fertilizers, contributing to the circular economy and waste reduction. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Emerging infectious diseases (EIDs) are newly emerging and reemerging infectious diseases. The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases identifies the following as emerging infectious diseases: SARS, MERS, COVID-19, influenza, fungal diseases, plague, schistosomiasis, smallpox, tick-borne diseases, and West Nile fever. The factors that should be taken into consideration are the genetic adaptation of microbial agents and the characteristics of the human host or environment. The new approach to identifying new possible pathogens will have to go through the One Health approach and omics integration data, which are capable of identifying high-priority microorganisms in a short period of time. New bioinformatics technologies enable global integration and sharing of surveillance data for rapid public health decision-making to detect and prevent epidemics and pandemics, ensuring timely response and effective prevention measures. Machine learning tools are being more frequently utilized in the realm of infectious diseases to predict sepsis in patients, diagnose infectious diseases early, and forecast the effectiveness of treatment or the appropriate choice of antibiotic regimen based on clinical data. We will discuss emerging microorganisms, omics techniques applied to infectious diseases, new computational solutions to evaluate biomarkers, and innovative tools that are useful for integrating omics data and electronic medical records data for the clinical management of emerging infectious diseases. Abstract

Introduction Coronavirus disease 19 (COVID-19), due to severe acute respiratory syndrome-coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV2), comprises a broad spectrum of clinical presentation ranging from flu-like syndrome to organ failure. The risk of coinfections is high and responsible for a worse prognosis, mainly in the case of bacterial involvement and in the presence of particular comorbidity. We present the clinical, laboratory, radiologic characteristic along with therapeutic management of a patient with COVID-19 and Staphylococcus aureus coinfection. Case Presentation A 55-year-old Caucasian woman was admitted to our hospital due to a two-day history of fever and acute dyspnea with severe respiratory failure worsened after the administration of atezolizumab and nab-paclitaxel. Her medical history comprehended a triple negative, BRCA1-related, PD-L1 positive right breast cancer with multiple bone metastasis, causing bone marrow infiltration-related severe pancytopenia. Her physical examination revealed scattered wheezes, rales, and bilateral dry crackles in the middle and lower lung fields and lower limb paresis. The body mass index was 30 kg/m2 and arterial blood gas evaluation revealed a stage III acute respiratory distress syndrome. Microbiological specimens revealed a Staphylococcus aureus positivity from endotracheal aspirate. The chest computed tomography (CT) scan showed the presence of large areas of parenchymal consolidation and aerial bronchogram, bilateral “ground glass” areas reaching the highest extension on the upper and middle zones. The high clinical and radiological suspicion of COVID-19 along with the negative result of nasopharyngeal specimen make necessary an endotracheal aspirate resulting positive for SARS-CoV2. Patient started an antimicrobial treatment and lopinavir-ritonavir plus hydroxychloroquine but, unfortunately, died five days after hospital admission. Conclusion The high risk of mortality of our patient was due to viral-bacterial coinfection, advanced cancer status with active immunotherapy. This case highlights the need for a prompt clinical, laboratory, and radiological evaluation to allow a correct diagnosis and start a specific therapy.

Abstract

The appearance of emerging variants of SARS‐CoV‐2 carrying mutations into the spike protein has recently raised concern with respect to tracking their transmission and mitigating the impact in the evolving pandemic across countries. AY.4.2, a recently detected Delta variant sublineage, is considered a new variant under investigation (VUI) as it carries specific genetic signatures present in the spike protein, called Y145H and A222V. Here, using genomic epidemiology, we provide the first preliminary insight regarding the circulation of this emerging VUI in Italy. Highlights: Genomic epidemiology suggests that multiple independent introductions have occurred trough time likely‐mediated by European countries.Virus migration generally followed patterns of national and international human mobility, illustrating how the easing of restriction measures might facilitate the spread of those emerging variants worldwide.Our data reveal how crucial appear to be the implementation of a widespread genomic monitoring to detect variants previously not yet identified across the country.
