The climate impact of Arctic aerosols, like the Arctic Haze, and their origin are not fully understood. Therefore, long-term aerosol observations in the Arctic are performed. In this study, we present a homogenised data set from a sun and star photometer operated in the European Arctic, in Ny-Ålesund, Svalbard, of the 20 years from 2004–2023. Due to polar day and polar night, it is crucial to use observations of both instruments. Their data is evaluated in the same way and follows the cloud-screening procedure of AERONET. Additionally, an improved method for the calibration of the star photometer is presented. We found out, that autumn and winter are generally more polluted and have larger particles than summer. While the monthly median Aerosol Optical Depth (AOD) decreases in spring, the AOD increases significantly in autumn. A clear signal of large particles during the Arctic Haze can not be distinguished from large aerosols in winter. With autocorrelation analysis, we found that AOD events usually occur with a duration of several hours. We also compared AOD events with large-scale processes, like large-scale oscillation patterns, sea ice, weather conditions, or wildfires in the Northern Hemisphere but did not find one single cause that clearly determines the Arctic AOD. This study presents the hygroscopic properties of aerosols from the Arctic free troposphere by means of contemporary lidar and radiosonde observations only. It investigates the period from the Arctic Haze in spring towards the summer season in 2021. Therefore, a one-parameter growth curve model is applied to lidar data from the Koldewey Aerosol Raman Lidar (AWIPEV in Ny-Ålesund, Svalbard) and simultaneous radiosonde measurements. Hygroscopic growth depends on different factors like aerosol diameter and chemical composition. To detangle this dependency, three trends in hygroscopicity are additionally investigated by classifying the aerosol first by its dry color ratio, and then by its season and altitude. Generally, we found a complex altitude dependence with the least hygroscopic particles in the middle of the troposphere. The most hygroscopic aerosol is located in the upper free troposphere. A hypothesis based on prior lifting of the particles is given. The expected trend with aerosol diameter is not observed, which draws attention to the complex dependence of hygroscopic growth on geographical region and altitude, and to the development of backscatter with the aerosol size itself. In a seasonal overview, two different modes of stronger or weaker hygroscopic particles are additionally observed. Furthermore, two special days are discussed using the Mie theory. They show, on the one hand, the complexity of analyzing hygroscopic growth by means of lidar data, but on the other hand, they demonstrate that it is in fact measurable with this approach. For these two case studies, we calculated that the aerosol effective radius increased from 0.16 μ m (dry) to 0.18 μ m (wet) and from 0.28 μ m to 0.32 μ m for the second case. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Asian summer monsoon has a strong convectional component with which aerosols are able to be lifted up into the lower stratosphere. Due to usually long lifetimes and long-range transport aerosols remain there much longer than in the troposphere and are also able to be advected around the globe. Our aim of this study is a synergy between simulations by Chemical Lagrangian Model of the Stratosphere (CLaMS) and KARL (Koldewey Aerosol Raman Lidar) at AWIPEV, Ny-Ålesund in the Arctic, by comparing CLaMS results with exemplary days of lidar measurements as well as analyzing the stratospheric aerosol background. We use global three-dimensional Lagrangian transport simulations including surface origin tracers as well as back trajectories to identify source regions of the aerosol particles measured over Ny-Ålesund. We analyzed lidar data for the year 2021 and found the stratosphere generally clear, without obvious aerosol layers from volcanic eruptions or biomass burnings. Still an obvious annual cycle of the backscatter coefficient with higher values in late summer to autumn and lower values in late winter has been found. Results from CLaMS model simulations indicate that from late summer to early autumn filaments with high fractions of air which originate in South Asia – one of the most polluted regions in the world – reach the Arctic at altitudes between 360 and 380 K potential temperature. We found a coinciding measurement between the overpass of such a filament and lidar observations, and we estimated that backscatter and depolarization increased by roughly 15 % during this event compared to the background aerosol concentration. Hence we demonstrate that the Asian summer monsoon is a weak but measurable source for Arctic stratospheric aerosol in late summer to early autumn. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study presented an analysis of the geometric and optical properties of cirrus clouds with data produced by Compact Cloud-Aerosol Lidar (ComCAL) over Koror, Palau (7.3°N, 134.5°E), in the Tropical Western Pacific region. The lidar measurement dataset covers April 2018 to May 2019 and includes data collected during March, July and August 2022. The results show that cirrus clouds occur approximately 47.9% of the lidar sampling time, predominantly between altitudes of 15 and 18 km. Seasonal variations in cirrus top height closely align with those of the cold point tropopause. Most cirrus clouds exhibit low cloud optical depth (COD < 0.1), with an annual mean depolarization ratio of 31 ± 19%. Convective-forming cirrus clouds during the summer monsoon season exhibit a larger size by notably lower values in terms of color ratio. Extremely thin cirrus clouds (COD < 0.005) constituting 1.6% of total cirrus occurrences are frequently observed at 1–2 km above the cold point, particularly during winter and summer, suggesting significant stratosphere–troposphere exchange. The coldest and highest tropopause over Palau is persistent during winter, and related to the pathway of tropospheric air entering the stratosphere through the cold trap. In summer, the extremely thin cirrus above the cold point is likely correlated with equatorial Kelvin waves induced by western Pacific monsoon convection. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In order to increase vaccination rates, the Government of Germany introduced vaccination against influenza and COVID-19 into the regular care administered by pharmacists. However, vaccination training is yet not integrated into the German pharmacy curriculum. Therefore, the Institute for Clinical Pharmacy and Pharmacotherapy in Duesseldorf had developed an innovative vaccination course using high-fidelity simulation for students. To investigate the acceptance further, the course was carried out at three different German universities (Bonn, Duesseldorf, Greifswald). Students were asked to give their self-assessment before and after and satisfaction only after the training course. Responses from 33 participants from the University of Bonn, 42 from the University of Duesseldorf and 49 from the University of Greifswald were analyzed. Every participant at the respective universities showed a significant increase in their self-assessment and indicated a high level of satisfaction with the course. The results also did not differ significantly between the respective universities. Consequently, the results lead to the hypothesis that the satisfaction of pharmacy students with this kind of training using high-fidelity simulation is very high and attractive, and can be recommended for other German universities. The climate in the Arctic has warmed much more quickly in the last 2 to 3 decades than at the mid-latitudes, i.e., during the Arctic amplification (AA) period. Radiative forcing in the Arctic is influenced both directly and indirectly by aerosols. However, their observation from ground or airborne instruments is challenging, and thus measurements are sparse. In this study, total aerosol optical depth (AOD) is determined from top-of-atmosphere reflectance measurements by the Advanced Along-Track Scanning Radiometer (AATSR) on board ENVISAT over snow and ice in the Arctic using a retrieval called AEROSNOW for the period 2003 to 2011. AEROSNOW incorporates an existing aerosol retrieval algorithm with a cloud-masking algorithm, alongside a novel quality-flagging methodology specifically designed for implementation in the high Arctic region (≥ 72 ∘ N). We use the dual-viewing capability of the AATSR instrument to accurately determine the contribution of aerosol to the reflection at the top of the atmosphere for observations over the bright surfaces of the cryosphere in the Arctic. The AOD is retrieved assuming that the surface reflectance observed by the satellite can be well parameterized by a bidirectional snow reflectance distribution function (BRDF). The spatial distribution of AOD shows that high values in spring (March, April, May) and lower values in summer (June, July, August) are observed. The AEROSNOW AOD values are consistent with those from collocated Aerosol Robotic Network (AERONET) measurements, with no systematic bias found as a function of time. The AEROSNOW AOD in the high Arctic was validated by comparison with ground-based measurements at the PEARL, OPAL, Hornsund, and Thule stations. The AEROSNOW AOD value is less than 0.15 on average, and the linear regression of AEROSNOW and AERONET total AOD yields a slope of 0.98, a Pearson correlation coefficient of R=0.86 , and a root mean square error (RMSE) of =0.01 for the monthly scale in both spring and summer. The AEROSNOW observation of increased AOD values over the high Arctic cryosphere during spring confirms clearly that Arctic haze events were well captured by this dataset. In addition, the AEROSNOW AOD results provide a novel and unique total AOD data product for the springtime and summertime from 2003 to 2011. In the beginning of March 2018, Lidar measurements were performed on Svalbard, Arctic Ocean, in order to analyse the optical and hygroscopic properties of Arctic aerosol. In this study, aerosol backscatter showed significant higher values in lower altitudes. The analysis of the Colour Ratio (CR) revealed smaller particles in lower altitudes, with larger particles appearing only above Investigation of the hygroscopic character was done by applying the growth parameter introduced by Gassó et al. (2000). It was found that the method of Zieger et.al. (2010) can be successfully extended to backscatter and CR data from Lidar measurements. Ice nucleation was examined in ice supersaturation conditions, with no ice cloud formation observed. This indicated that the role of Arctic aerosol as ice nuclei is still a poorly understood issue.
