Os medicamentos são ferramentas importantes em saúde, porém o seu uso deve ser realizado com cuidado, avaliando a relação benefício/risco e a eficácia para indicação clínica a que se destinam. Com objetivo em descrever sobre os cuidados na prescrição de Metilfenidato (Ritalina®) em crianças com transtorno de déficit de atenção e hiperatividade, o estudo em questão procura salientar a eficácia do Metilfenidato (Ritalina®) no tratamento do TDH e a também apresentar os potenciais riscos do uso indevido do medicamento. O artigo foi elaborado através de uma revisão bibliográfica nas coleções Scientific Electronic Libraries Online (sciELO), Journal of Research Associations and Development, PUBMED e LILACS (Latin American and Caribbean Health Sciences Literature), no qual forma usados 30 artigos para o seu desenvolvimento, e que foi divido em quatro partes, introdução, metodologia, dados farmacológicos e por fim os resultados e conclusões obtidas através das pesquisas. With the objective of describing care in the prescription of Methylphenidate (Ritalin®) in children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, the study in question seeks to highlight the efficacy of Methylphenidate (Ritalin®) treatment of HRT and also to present the potential risks of misuse of the drug. The article was prepared through a bibliographic review in the Scientific Electronic Libraries Online (sciELO), Journal of Research Associations and Development, PUBMED and LILACS (Latin American and Caribbean Health Sciences Literature) collections, in which 30 articles were used for their development, and which was divided into four parts, introduction, methodology, pharmacological data and finally the results and conclusions obtained through the research. Con el objetivo de describir los cuidados en la prescripción de Metilfenidato (Ritalin®) en niños con trastorno por déficit de atención con hiperactividad, el estudio en cuestión busca resaltar la eficacia del tratamiento de la TRH con Metilfenidato (Ritalin®) y también presentar los riesgos potenciales del mal uso. de la droga El artículo fue elaborado a través de una revisión bibliográfico en las colecciones Scientific Electronic Libraries Online (sciELO), Journal of Research Associations and Development, PUBMED y LILACS (Latin American and Caribbean Health Sciences Literature), en la que se utilizaron 30 artículos para su elaboración, y el cual se dividió en seis partes, introducción, metodología, datos farmacológicos y finalmente los resultados y conclusiones obtenidos a través de la investigación.

Methylphenidate (MPH) was first synthesized in 1944, already in 1955 the pharmaceutical company Ciba-Geigy (precursor to Novartis) was responsible for launching the product on the market. It is a psychotropic drug commonly used by people with attention deficit disorder. and hyperactivity (ADHD) and narcolepsy, which acts as a central nervous system stimulant, being part of the amphetamine family. When the drug is used improperly, it may have reactions. Therefore, this research aimed to explain and analyze the effectiveness and safety in the use of Ritalin® by university students in the health area in Brazil, which are the effects that this medication can cause in the human body. A comprehensive literature review was carried out and the articles in this review were collected from the following electronic research databases: MEDLINE/PUBMED, LILACS and SCIELO, between 2013 and 2022. 80 articles were identified, 20 of which were used in the elaboration of the work . The results of this research can lead to reflection for students showing damages that the indiscriminate use of psychostimulants, especially Ritalin®, can harm the user who self-medicates. The indiscriminate use causes neurological, physical and mental consequences in the people who consume it, making us think about the intake and sale of this medication to audiences such as university students, and that the prescription and correct medical follow-up are indispensable. El metilfenidato (MPH) se sintetizó por primera vez en 1944, y en 1955 la empresa farmacéutica Ciba-Geigy (precursora de Novartis) fue la encargada de lanzar el producto al mercado. Es un fármaco psicotrópico comúnmente utilizado por personas con trastorno por déficit de atención. e hiperactividad (TDAH) y narcolepsia, que actúa como estimulante del sistema nervioso central, siendo parte de la familia de las anfetaminas. Cuando el medicamento se usa incorrectamente, puede tener reacciones. Por lo tanto, esta investigación tuvo como objetivo explicar y analizar la eficacia y seguridad en el uso de Ritalin® por estudiantes universitarios del área de la salud en Brasil, cuáles son los efectos que este fármaco puede causar en el cuerpo humano. Se realizó una revisión bibliográfica exhaustiva y los artículos de esta revisión fueron recolectados de las siguientes bases de datos electrónicas de investigación: MEDLINE/PUBMED, LILACS y SCIELO, entre 2013 y 2022. Se identificaron 80 artículos, 20 de los cuales fueron utilizados en la elaboración de la trabajar. Los resultados de esta investigación pueden llevar a la reflexión de los estudiantes mostrando los perjuicios que el uso indiscriminado de psicoestimulantes, especialmente Ritalin®, puede perjudicar al usuario que se automedica. El uso indiscriminado provoca secuelas neurológicas, físicas y psíquicas en las personas que lo consumen, haciéndonos pensar en la ingestión y venta de este medicamento a públicos como estudiantes universitarios, y que la prescripción y el correcto seguimiento médico son fundamentales. É uma droga psicotrópica comumente usada por pessoas com transtorno de déficit de atenção e hiperatividade (TDAH) e narcolepsia, que atua como estimulante do sistema nervoso central, fazendo parte da família das anfetaminas. Quando o fármaco é utilizado da forma indevida pode apresentar reações. Para tanto esta pesquisa teve como objetivo explanar e analisar a eficácia e segurança no uso da Ritalina® por estudantes universitários na área da saúde no brasil quais os efeitos que essa medicação pode causar no organismo humano. Realizou-se uma revisão abrangente da literatura e os artigos desta revisão foram coletados nas seguintes bases de dados eletrônicos de pesquisa: MEDLINE/PUBMED, LILACS e SCIELO, entre 2013 e 2022. Identificaram-se 80 artigos, sendo 20 utilizados na elaboração do trabalho. Os resultados desta pesquisa podem levar a reflexão para estudantes mostrando prejuízos que o uso indiscriminado de psicoestimulantes, sobretudo a Ritalina® pode prejudicar o usuário que se automedica. O uso indiscriminado causa consequências neurológicas, físicas e mentais nas pessoas que a consomem, fazendo-nos pensar sobre a ingesta e venda dessa medicação para públicos como universitários, e que a receita e acompanhamento médico correto são indispensáveis.

O Transtorno de Déficit de Atenção/Hiperatividade (TDAH) inicia-se na infância e apresenta como sintomas a falta de atenção, hiperatividade e dificuldade de autocontrole. Objetivou-se identificar os principais estudos e aplicações tecnológicas sobre TDAH e eletroencefalograma (EEG) em bases de dados e nas patentes. A pesquisa ocorreu de setembro a dezembro de 2021, utilizando para o levantamento de artigos científicos as bases da Web of Science e Pubmed e para as patentes: United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO), European Patent Office (EPO), World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) e o Instituto Nacional de Propriedade Industrial (INPI) do Brasil. Os resultados nas bases de dados mostraram os USA liderando o ranking e a busca por patentes evidenciou um crescimento no número de depósitos. Constatou-se a necessidade de maiores investimentos em tecnologia brasileira, pois os resultados evidenciaram poucos registros na base de dados INPI sendo relevante maior atenção no desenvolvimento tecnológico do país. Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) begins in childhood and presents as symptoms of lack of attention, hyperactivity and difficulty in self-control. The objective was to identify the main studies and technological applications on ADHD and electroencephalogram (EEG) in databases and in patents. The research took place from September to December 2021, using the Web of Science and Pubmed databases for the survey of scientific articles and for patents: United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO), European Patent Office (EPO), World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) and the National Institute of Industrial Property (INPI) of Brazil. The results in the database showed the USA leading the ranking and the search for patents showed an increase in the number of filings. There is a need for greater investments in Brazilian technology, as the results showed few records in the INPI database, with greater attention being paid to the country's technological development. El trastorno de déficit de atención/hiperactividad (TDAH) se inicia en la infancia y presenta como síntomas la falta de atención, la hiperactividad y la dificultad de autocontrol. El objetivo es identificar los principales estudios y aplicaciones tecnológicas sobre TDAH y electroencefalograma (EEG) en las bases de datos y en las patentes. La investigación se llevó a cabo de septiembre a diciembre de 2021, utilizando para el estudio de los artículos científicos las bases Web of Science y Pubmed y para las patentes: Oficina de Patentes y Marcas de los Estados Unidos (USPTO), Oficina Europea de Patentes (OEP), Organización Mundial de la Propiedad Intelectual (OMPI) y el Instituto Nacional de la Propiedad Industrial (INPI) de Brasil. Los resultados en las bases de datos mostraron que Estados Unidos lideraba la clasificación y la búsqueda de patentes mostró un aumento en el número de depósitos. Se señaló la necesidad de una mayor inversión en tecnología brasileña, ya que los resultados mostraron pocos registros en la base de datos del INPI y es pertinente una mayor atención al desarrollo tecnológico del país.

Background: Methylphenidate is the first-choice drug to the treatment of patients with attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). However, there was an increase in the indiscriminate use of this drug. Objectives We aim to describe the mechanisms of action as well as the side effects of this drug and indiscriminate use of this medicine in Brazil and worldwide. Methods: We performed a bibliographic review on electronic scientific site as PubMed, Scielo and Google Scholar. Results: Forty-five articles were found and, among them, 28 were selected. Full article available in the international and national literature were selected based on key words: methylphenidate; action mechanism; adverse effects and ADHD. Articles published before 2003 were excluded. Discussion/Conclusions: Methylphenidate acts directly on three distinct regions of the central nervous system by blocking the reuptake of the hormone dopamine and noradrenaline. Nervousness, nasopharyngitis, insomnia, nausea are the most common adverse effects caused using methylphenidate. The less frequent reactions are headache, alteration in blood pressure and metabolic, hematological, immune changes. Further studies are necessary for an in-depth assessment of the mechanism of action and side effects of this drug on ADHD.

Objective: Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a fixed pattern of disregard and hyperactivity that is much more severe than what is normal in children of the same age. Multiple drugs are used for the treatment of children with ADHD; however, their side effects and efficacy are not clearly known. This study was designed to evaluate and compare the therapeutic effects of two drugs, that is, omega-3 and methylphenidate hydrochloride (Ritalin®), used to treat patients with ADHD. Methods: In a randomized, placebo control clinical trial in Yazd, Iran, 85 ADHD children were divided into two experimental and one control groups. Thus, 29 subjects were treated with Ritalin®, 28 subjects received omega-3, and the remaining 28 received placebo. The data collection tools used in this study consisted of the Conners' Parent Rating Scale and Teacher Rating Scale. The scores obtained from these questionnaires were analyzed using chi-square test and paired t-test in PASW Statistics. Results: The average age of the population was 8.22 (± 1.65) years. Significant associations were observed between Ritalin® therapy and the changes before and after the treatment, and the omega-3 treatment and the changes before and after treatment (p < 0.001). There was no significant association between the placebo group and the changes before and after the treatment (p > 0.050). Omega-3 had considerable efficacy as well as Ritalin® (P = 0.001). Conclusions: More attention should be given to screening, prevention, and treatment with omega-3 and its effective role in the development of the brain and mental health, and increasing children's attention span and thinking ability.

Ancorado nas discussões teóricas acerca do tema da medicalização e nas pesquisas brasileiras que apontam para o aumento, no país, do consumo do psicofármaco comercialmente chamado Ritalina®, este trabalho tem como objetivo refletir sobre o papel atribuído a esse fármaco na forma como seus consumidores compreendem e constroem a si mesmos, especialmente no que tange à crença cultural no auto-aperfeiçoamento. Os dados empíricos que embasam a discussão aqui proposta foram produzidos através de entrevistas com pessoas que utilizavam a medicação e também por meio da análise do material de divulgação da Ritalina®, que é voltado ao público especializado. Busca ressaltar, assim, a importância de pesquisas sobre a imaginação farmacêutica relacionada a esse medicamento, no que se refere à existência de discursos que destacam valores a respeito de desempenho, concentração e controle. Por fim, são apresentadas justificativas e práticas de utilização que perpassam questões acerca da normalização, tratamento e melhorias de si, bem como se problematiza a existência da categoria de aprimoramento intitulada aprimoramento circunstancial. Based on theoretical discussions about medicalization and on Brazilian researches that point out to an increase in the consumption of the psychotropic medication commercially known as Ritalin®, the present work aims to reflect on the role accredited to this drug in the way its consumers comprehend and construct themselves, especially regarding a cultural believe in self-enhancement. The empirical data that support the presented discussion was gathered through interviews conducted with people that have used the medication, and also through an analysis of Ritalin’s® advertising material directed to an audience of specialists. Thus, it aspires to call attention to the importance of researches on pharmaceutical imagination, as regards the existence of speeches that highlight values regarding performance, concentration and control. Finally, it presents usages justifications and practices that engage issues regarding normalization, treatment and self - improvement, and at the same time it problematizes the existence of an enhancement category termed as circumstantial enhancement.

Esta dissertação explora o tema da medicalização. A pesquisa toma como objeto a promoção do fármaco Cloridrato de Metilfenidato, conhecido pelo nome comercial: Ritalina®. Trata-se de uma droga psicoestimulante atualmente estabelecida como tratamento de primeira linha para o TDA/H (Transtorno de Déficit de Atenção/Hiperatividade). A literatura especializada afirma que o TDA/H é uma doença de alta prevalência em crianças em idade escolar, sendo o “distúrbio neurocomportamental” mais comum na infância. Dados epidemiológicos sobre a expansão da prevalência do TDA/H e sobre aumento do consumo da Ritalina® somados às complexas relações entre diversos atores (indústria farmacêutica, pesquisadores e publicitários) sugerem que, além da apropriação dos modos de vida das pessoas pela medicina, está sendo estabelecido um vasto mercado corporativo. Este trabalho acompanha a trajetória da Ritalina® a partir da análise de material promocional destinado a profissionais da área médica. As propagandas examinadas foram encontradas através do buscador google e do Portal de Periódicos da Capes (periodicos.capes.gov.br) e compreendem o período de 1956 - quando Ritalina® foi lançada nos EUA – até 1979. Selecionei 32 informes publicitários para serem analisados, baseando-me em critérios como qualidade das imagens, confiabilidade e origem das fontes. Os anúncios mostram que este psicofármaco foi inicialmente indicado para problemas distintos como depressão, fadiga, letargia e narcolepsia. Ao fim da década de 1960 a Ritalina® passa a ser reconhecida como tratamento eficaz para “crianças hiperativas”. Argumento que ao considerarmos propagandas produzidas por laboratórios farmacêuticos como documentos legítimos é possível contribuir para resgatar aspectos históricos de determinada droga que de outro modo poderiam passar desapercebidos, uma vez que este tipo de material caracteriza-se como um elemento imprescindível no arsenal persuasivo dessas empresas. This dissertation examines the promotion and advertisement for Ritalin (a trade name for methylphenidate). Ritalin® is a psychostimulant medication used for the treatment of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). ADHD is one of the most common childhood disorders and can continue through adolescence and adulthood. Symptoms include hyperactivity, difficulty staying focused, paying attention and difficulty controlling behavior. The worldwide prevalence estimates of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) are highly variable. The current study aims to examine how Ritalin®, originally promoted by Ciba as a mild antidepressant, became the drug of first choice to treat ADHD (known at the time as hyperactivity or minimal brain dysfunction). This dissertation examines the development of methylphenidate treatment and the expansion of the diagnostic category of ADHD through the analysis of pharmaceutical advertisements for Ritalin® in US and Canadian medical journals published between 1956 and 1970’s. Most of the journals were retrieved from Portal de Periódicos da Capes and MEDLINE searches. I selected a sample of 32 advertisements to analyze, based mainly on image quality. These pharmaceutical advertisements show that this psychotropic initially market for mild depression and mood disorders, fatigue, lethargy and narcolepsy. By the end of the 60’s, Ritalin is being shown – and renowned – as an effective treatment for “hyperactive children”. I suggest that when we consider pharmaceutical advertisement material as a legitimate documental source, it is possible contributing to retrieve historical aspects of a specific drug, which might otherwise go unnoticed, since this type of material is characterized as an essential component in the persuasive arsenal of those companies.

Ritalin® is a popular pharmaceutical. It keeps young people quiet and focused, but attracts intense opprobrium. Beginning with an account of the dimensions of Ritalin®’s use in the United States and controversies surrounding it, this article outlines how this might be understood in moral-panic terms and examines the role of the psy-function and various conflicts of interest, coverage in popular culture, and governmental responses. In many cases, progressive academics and activists have criticised moral panics, recuperating moral-panic folk devils as semiotic guerrillas struggling against authority. In this instance, however, the scene is too complex and multifaceted for that heroisation. There are no good guys; there is lots of panic, from all political-economic quarters. Some of it is justified—and none of it is straightforward.
