Abstract

A correlation between the change in magnetic susceptibility ({\Delta}\c{hi}exp) upon crystallization of Cu-Zr, Hf metallic glasses (MG) with their glass forming ability (GFA) observed recently is found to apply to Cu-Ti and Zr-Ni alloys, too. In particular, a small {\Delta}\c{hi}exp , which reflects similar electronic structures, ES, of glassy and corresponding crystalline alloys, corresponds to high GFA. Here, we studied {\Delta}\c{hi}exp in five Cu-Ti and four Cu-Zr and Ni-Zr MGs. The fully crystalline final state of all alloys was verified from X-ray diffraction patterns. The variation of GFA with composition in Cu-Ti, Cu-Zr and Cu-Hf MGs was established from the variation of the corresponding critical casting thickness, dc. Due to the absence of data for dc in Ni-Zr MGs their GFA was described by using empirical criteria, such as the reduced glass transition temperature. A very good correlation between {\Delta}\c{hi}exp and dc (and/or other criteria for GFA) was observed for all alloys studied. The correlation between the ES and GFA showed up best for Cu-Zr and NiZr2 alloys where direct data for the change in ES ({\Delta}ES) upon crystallization are available. The applicability of the {\Delta}\c{hi}exp ({\Delta}ES) criterion for high GFA (which provides a simple way to select the compositions with high GFA) to other metal-metal MGs (including ternary and multicomponent bulk MGs) is briefly discussed., Comment: 29 pages, 6 figures

Abstract

We critically examine a recent suggestion that "ambiguous" statistics is equivalent to infinite quon statistics and that it describes a dilute, nonrelativistics ideal gas of extremal black holes. 11. Evaluating the Potential for Smoke from Stubble Burning to Taint Grapes and Wine.

Abstract

It has been well established that bushfire/wildfire smoke can taint grapes (and therefore wine), depending on the timing and duration of exposure, but the risk of smoke contamination from stubble burning (a practice employed by some grain growers to prepare farmland for sowing) has not yet been established. This study exposed excised bunches of grapes to smoke from combustion of barley straw and pea stubble windrows to investigate the potential for stubble burning to elicit smoke taint. Increased levels of volatile phenols (i.e., chemical markers of smoke taint) were detected in grapes exposed to barley straw smoke (relative to control grapes), with smoke density and the duration of smoke exposure influencing grape volatile phenols. However, the sensory panel did not perceive wine made from grapes exposed to low-density smoke to be tainted, despite the presence of low levels of syringol providing compositional evidence of smoke exposure. During the pea stubble burn, grapes positioned amongst the burning windrows or on the edge of the pea paddock were exposed to smoke for ~15-20 and 30-45 min, respectively, but this only resulted in 1 µg/kg differences in the cresol and/or syringol concentrations of smoke-affected grapes (and 1 µg/L differences for wine), relative to controls. A small, but significant increase in the intensity of smoke aroma and burnt rubber flavor of wine made from the grapes positioned amongst the burning pea stubble windrows provided the only sensory evidence of any smoke taint. As such, had vineyards been located immediately downwind from the pea stubble burn, it is unlikely that there would have been any smoke contamination of unharvested grapes.

Abstract

It has been suggested that dust storms efficiently transport water vapor from the near-surface to the middle atmosphere on Mars. Knowledge of the water vapor vertical profile during dust storms is important to understand water escape. During Martian Year 34, two dust storms occurred on Mars: a global dust storm (June to mid-September 2018) and a regional storm (January 2019). Here we present water vapor vertical profiles in the periods of the two dust storms (Ls = 162–260° and Ls = 298–345°) from the solar occultation measurements by Nadir and Occultation for Mars Discovery (NOMAD) onboard ExoMars Trace Gas Orbiter (TGO). We show a significant increase of water vapor abundance in the middle atmosphere (40–100 km) during the global dust storm. The water enhancement rapidly occurs following the onset of the storm (Ls~190°) and has a peak at the most active period (Ls~200°). Water vapor reaches very high altitudes (up to 100 km) with a volume mixing ratio of ~50 ppm. The water vapor abundance in the middle atmosphere shows high values consistently at 60°S-60°N at the growth phase of the dust storm (Ls = 195°–220°), and peaks at latitudes greater than 60°S at the decay phase (Ls = 220°–260°). This is explained by the seasonal change of meridional circulation: from equinoctial Hadley circulation (two cells) to the solstitial one (a single pole-to-pole cell). We also find a conspicuous increase of water vapor density in the middle atmosphere at the period of the regional dust storm (Ls = 322–327°), in particular at latitudes greater than 60°S. ©2019. 16. Non-Invasive Tools to Detect Smoke Contamination in Grapevine Canopies, Berries and Wine: A Remote Sensing and Machine Learning Modeling Approach

Abstract

Bushfires are becoming more frequent and intensive due to changing climate. Those that occur close to vineyards can cause smoke contamination of grapevines and grapes, which can affect wines, producing smoke-taint. At present, there are no available practical in-field tools available for detection of smoke contamination or taint in berries. This research proposes a non-invasive/in-field detection system for smoke contamination in grapevine canopies based on predictable changes in stomatal conductance patterns based on infrared thermal image analysis and machine learning modeling based on pattern recognition. A second model was also proposed to quantify levels of smoke-taint related compounds as targets in berries and wines using near-infrared spectroscopy (NIR) as inputs for machine learning fitting modeling. Results showed that the pattern recognition model to detect smoke contamination from canopies had 96% accuracy. The second model to predict smoke taint compounds in berries and wine fit the NIR data with a correlation coefficient (R) of 0.97 and with no indication of overfitting. These methods can offer grape growers quick, affordable, accurate, non-destructive in-field screening tools to assist in vineyard management practices to minimize smoke taint in wines with in-field applications using smartphones and unmanned aerial systems (UAS).

Abstract

Background and Aims: The wine industry widely acknowledges that grape heterogeneity exists throughout any given vineyard at the time of harvest. There is a lack of understanding, however, of the effects that heterogeneity has on wine composition and sensory qualities. This study compared the chemical composition and sensory attributes of wines produced using parcels of grapes with known heterogeneity. Methods and Results: Cabernet Sauvignon berries were sorted into maturity classes using five density baths. Winemaking was undertaken with a varying proportion of sorted berries to obtain wines arising from low, moderate and high grape heterogeneity musts, containing the same level of TSS for comparison to a Control wine that represented the inherent heterogeneity of the harvested vines. Wines were distinguished by the concentration of 3‐isobutyl‐2‐methoxypyrazine, total anthocyanins and total phenolics, with the low heterogeneity wine having the highest values of each measurement. The high heterogeneity wine was characterised by a higher concentration of acetic acid. Principal component analysis of rate‐all‐that‐apply sensory attribute scores revealed that low and moderate heterogeneity wines were characterised by floral and pepper aroma attributes, and the high heterogeneity wine by sour taste. Conclusions: The differing levels of grape heterogeneity had a subtle effect on Cabernet Sauvignon wine colour, aroma and taste attributes, but it was demonstrated that the level of grape heterogeneity could be of relevance if it translated into differences in wine quality and style. Significance of the Study: The potential impact of grape heterogeneity on the chemical composition and sensory profile of Cabernet Sauvignon wine was highlighted. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Mt. Kopaonik is distinguished by a high level of biodiversity. In 1981 Kopaonik is promoted into the National park within former Social Federal Republic of Yugoslavia. Part of the National park is known as the oldest and the biggest ski resort in Serbia. The aim of this study was to determine key environmental factors influencing a floristic composition of a surveyed ski trails. The data set included 58 phytosociological releves recorded between 2010 and 2013. A total of 322 plant species was recorded in the analyzed ski areas of the Mt. Kopaonik taxonomically belong to 42 families and 136 genera. The main environmental gradients of species composition were analyzed by Detrended Correspondence Analysis (DCA). Ecological indicator values were used for ecological interpretation of ordination axes. The results of the DCA indicate that the main environmental gradient in the plant species composition of the ski trails was related to the moisture and nutrients. This is due to construction and the maintenance of ski slopes. The represented study gives useful information for the future maintenance of the ski slopes (primarily mowing, grazing, fertilize and overseeding) and selecting species for seed mixtures for restoration of ski slopes.

Abstract

Abstract: Background and Aims: The choice of yeast strain(s) to conduct the fermentation can greatly affect wine chemical and sensory profile. Even though the use of non‐Saccharomyces co‐inocula to build complexity and diversify styles is increasingly in vogue, a limited number of such products are available to date, and more research is required to guide their use in the wine industry. This study evaluates the potential of commercial yeast inocula to modulate the quality of Shiraz wines at two maturity levels. Methods and Results: Vinification outcomes of eight yeast treatments were compared in earlier (24°Brix) and later (29°Brix) harvested Shiraz fruit. Yeast treatments included five non‐Saccharomyces products with sequentially inoculated Saccharomyces cerevisiae, a commercial blend of non‐Saccharomyces and S. cerevisiae strains, and a S. cerevisiae inoculum. Fermentation monitoring, and comprehensive analytical profiling in terms of basic chemistry, volatile composition, phenolic measurements and descriptive sensory analysis, allowed for the comparison of the resulting wines. Both harvest date and yeast inoculation treatments had a significant impact on a range of compositional and, in turn, sensory parameters of the wines. Conclusions: Certain non‐Saccharomyces sequential inoculation treatments led to increased appeal of earlier harvest wines compared to the S. cerevisiae Control. These treatments, however, were related to an increased risk of arrested fermentation in higher ripeness conditions. Significance of the Study: This study contributes to a better understanding of yeast inoculum‐derived modulation of Shiraz wine quality parameters at different maturity levels. 30. Identification of a spatio-temporal model of crystal growth\ud based on boundary curvature

Abstract

A new method of identifying the spatio-temporal transition rule of crystal growth is introduced based on the connection between growth kinetics and dentritic\ud morphology. Using a modified three-point-method, curvatures of the considered crystal branch are calculated and curvature direction is used to measure growth\ud velocity. A polynomial model is then produced based on a curvature-velocity relationship to represent the spatio-temporal growth process. A very simple simulation\ud example is used initially to clearly explain the methodology. The results of identifying a model from a real crystal growth experiment show that the proposed\ud method can produce a good representation of crystal growth.

42. Serum Vitamin D analysis in acute viral bronchiolitis

Abstract

Introduction: Bronchiolitis is an acute viral disease of lower respitatory pathways in children under 2 years of age. It is manifested by coughing, whistling and refusing food intake. The most common cause of bronchiolitis is a respiratory syncytial virus. Vitamin D is a steroid hormone which is synthesized in the skin after sun exposure or food intake. With discovery of Vitamin D receptors and hydroxylated enzymes in immune cells, a potential role for Vitamin D in maintaining immune homeostasis was seen. It has been established that Vitamin D induces a change of the antimicrobial polypeptide, cathelicidin, which has both antibacterial and antiviral roles. Objective: Determine whether the serum Vitamin D levels in acute viral bronchiolitis patients from Central Kosovo is lowered. Methods: This prospective study included 34 children aged up to 2 years, that have been diagnosed with the heavy form of acute viral bronchiolitis. Blood was drawn from all subjects to analyze serum Vitamin D levels. Results:Average levels of Vitamin D, measured in all subjects, was 35.5 ng/ml. After Vitamin D levels stratification, 62% of the subjects had normal levels of serum Vitamin D, while 38% of the subjects had lower levels of serum Vitamin D. 15% of children had lower levels than 20 ng/ml. With children of ages up to 12 months there was a statistical significance of negative direction between Vitamin D serum levels and body height (r=-0.683, p=0.010) and between Vitamin D serum levels and body weight (r=-0.725, p=0.005). With children of ages up to 24 months there was only a statistical significance of negative direction between Vitamin D levels and body height (r=-0.540, p=0.011). Conclusion: Our research confirmed that children with acute viral bronchiolitis have a significant deficiency of Vitamin D, although it's a required addition to nutrition for children under the age of 2 years.

Abstract

Check dams are built to control erosion processes and torrential floods. In Serbia, legally binding documents, VOS (2002) and PPRS (2010), provide the concept for the water supply of the population and industry by regional systems for which water is provided by building high dams and formation of reservoirs. With this concept, it is often not possible to meet the needs of local communities in mountainous areas. In order to contribute to solving the water supply problems of these mostly poor villages, research was conducted on the possibility of using check dam aggradation groundwater for this purpose. Field investigations and analysis of project documentation for numerous check dams and aggradations in Serbia were carried out. Potential quantities and quality of groundwater in the aggradations were analyzed as a resource for the water supply of the population. The results of the research indicate very favorable possibilities of the aggradations for the accumulation of groundwater in the form of unconfined or phreatic aquifer with a free water table, in quantities that can be used for water supply. It was stated that: 1) under favorable conditions, with check dams on watercourses with constant flow and large-scale aggradations, there is a possibility of accumulating sufficient quantities of groundwater as a resource for water supply, 2) improving the quality of infiltrated waters by the process of filtration through intergranular porous media of the aggradation, and reaching the level of water supply quality, and 3) favorable economic parameters for opening the source at the aggradation, compared to other types of water sources. The possibility that check dams, in addition to their traditional role, could be used for local water supply facilities was also highlighted.
