2. Bragg spectroscopic interferometer and quantum measurement-induced correlations in atomic Bose-Einstein condensates

Abstract

We theoretically analyze the Bragg spectroscopic interferometer of two spatially separated atomic Bose-Einstein condensates that was experimentally realized by Saba et al. [Science 2005 v307 p1945] by continuously monitoring the relative phase evolution. Even though the atoms in the light-stimulated Bragg scattering interact with intense coherent laser beams, we show that the phase is created by quantum measurement-induced back-action on the homodyne photo-current of the lasers, opening possibilities for quantum-enhanced interferometric schemes. We identify two regimes of phase evolution: a running phase regime which was observed in the experiment of Saba et al., that is sensitive to an energy offset and suitable for an interferometer, and a trapped phase regime, that can be insensitive to applied forces and detrimental to interferometric applications., Comment: 14 pages, 3 figures

Abstract

INTRODUCTION: Exercise not only improves the fitness and well-being of adult cancer patients, but it also has direct effects on cancer itself including effects on cancer cell proliferation. Childhood cancers differ from adult cancers, and it is poorly understood whether exercise affects cancer hallmarks in pediatric cancer patients. The aim of this study was therefore to 1) investigate whether incubation of two sarcoma cell lines with exercise-conditioned sera alters cell proliferation compared to resting sera and 2) whether there are metabolite biomarkers whose concentration predicts the proliferative/mitotic effect of a serum. METHODS: We screened 212 patients with pediatric malignancies of which 11 children performed a high intensity interval training (HIIT) with 10 x 15 s intervals (1). Blood was drawn before and after the exercise and processed to serum. Subsequently, we incubated Ewing sarcoma (A673) and rhabdomyosarcoma (RD) cells with 10% exercise-conditioned or control media in triplicates and measured cell proliferation by WST-1 assay. Proliferation data were further correlated to serum metabolites quantified by mass spectrometry (AbsoluteIDQ p180 kit). RESULTS: To find out whether exercise alters A673 and RD proliferation, we incubated these cells with the resting and exercise-conditioned sera and measured proliferation by WST-1 assay. When compared to sera taken at rest, exerciseconditioned sera reduced proliferation of A673 cells by 7 ± 30% (p=0.2), and of RD cells by 3 ± 7% (p=0.22), respectively. However, the inter-individual difference between proliferation responses to patient sera was greater: up to 400% for the A673 cell line and 84% for the RD cell line. Next, to identify possible metabolite biomarkers for proliferation, we correlated exercise-induced metabolite concentration changes with exercise-induced proliferation changes. Abstract

The growing demand for cocoa beans and products worldwide has been met by expanding the area under cocoa production while productivity per hectare has stagnated at a low level of around 450 kg/ha per year in the last decade. Throughout the tropics cocoa has increasingly been cultivated in full-sun monocultures in order to maximize short-term productivity and profitability, which has been associated with soil erosion and degradation, biodiversity loss, as well as increased susceptibility to climate change impacts and pests and diseases. Dynamic agroforestry systems are an alternative production method which has long been practiced in Latin American countries such as Bolivia. Through mimicking natural forests, these systems offer multiple benefits such as soil fertility enhancement, reduction in pest and disease pressure, erosion control, and revenue diversification. In Côte d’Ivoire, where most cocoa is still produced in monocultures, dynamic agroforestry systems were recently introduced on a small scale. Here we use different research projects conducted in Bolivia and Côte d’Ivoire as case studies to review productivity, soil fertility as well as pests and diseases in dynamic agroforestry systems and monocultures, and outline factors influencing the adoption of dynamic agroforestry systems from the farmers’ perspective. We found productivity under agroforestry systems to be either similar or higher compared to monocultures. We recorded 161 % higher total system yields in an on-station field trial and an on-farm study in Bolivia, and in an on-farm study in Côte d’Ivoire. Cocoa yields were 12–46 % higher in agroforestry systems compared to monocultures. In addition, cocoa in dynamic agroforestry systems exhibited significantly less incidences of witches’ broom, Moniliophthora perniciosa, compared to monocultures in Bolivia. Farmers in Bolivia and Côte d’Ivoire observed more soil-related problems and incidences of pests and diseases in monocultures than in agroforestry

Das nationale Forschungsprogramm NFP 61 «Nachhaltige Wassernutzung » des Schweizerischen Nationalfonds hat sich zum Ziel gesetzt, wissenschaftliche Grundlagen zur nachhaltigen Wasserbewirtschaftung in der Schweiz zu liefern. Als Teil dieses Forschungsvorhabens wurde im Rahmen des Projektes MontanAqua die Wasserbewirtschaftung der Region Crans-Montana-Sierre (Wallis) untersucht. Es ging dabei darum, in enger Zusammenarbeit mit den in der Region betroffenen Akteuren nachhaltige Wassernutzungsstrategien für die Zukunft zu entwickeln. MontanAqua hat sich vertieft mit den bestehenden Systemen der Wasserbewirtschaftung auf der regionalen Skala (11 Gemeinden) auseinandergesetzt. Dazu wurden die zukünftigen Auswirkungen der klimatischen und sozioökonomischen Veränderungen einbezogen. Das Forschungsteam analysierte die aktuelle Situation anhand von quantitativen, qualitativen sowie kartografischen Methoden und kombinierte diese mit Modellberechnungen. Für die Modellierung der Zukunft wurden regionale Klimaszenarien und vier mit lokalen Akteuren entwickelte sozioökonomische Szenarien verwendet. Dieser Überblick fasst die Resultate des Projektes MontanAqua zusammen. Fünf wesentliche Fragen werden beantwortet und fünf Kernbotschaften erläutert. Zudem sind Empfehlungen für die Verantwortlichen der regionalen und kantonalen Wasserbewirtschaftung formuliert.

Abstract

International audience; OBJECTIVE: The European League Against Rheumatism (EULAR) Sjögren's Syndrome (SS) Disease Activity Index (ESSDAI) and the EULAR SS Patient-Reported Index (ESSPRI) were recently developed. We aimed to determine whether patients' symptoms differed between patients with and without systemic involvement and if the disease-specific indices correlated with each other in primary SS. METHODS: Fifteen French centers included 395 primary SS patients in the Assessment of Systemic Signs and Evolution in Sjögren's Syndrome Cohort. At enrollment, physicians completed the ESSDAI, the SS Disease Activity Index (SSDAI), and the Sjögren's Systemic Clinical Activity Index (SCAI), and patients completed the ESSPRI, the Sicca Symptoms Inventory, and the Profile of Fatigue and Discomfort. All scores were compared between patients with and without systemic involvement. Correlations between scores of systemic activity and patients' symptoms were obtained. RESULTS: At enrollment, 120 (30.4%) patients had never experienced systemic complication and 155 (39.2%) patients and 120 (30.4%) patients had, respectively, only past or current systemic manifestations. Past or current systemic patients had higher levels of symptoms, except dryness. The ESSDAI did not correlate with the patient-scored ESSPRI (rho = 0.06, P = 0.30), whereas the SSDAI and the SCAI, which include subjective items, did correlate (rho = 0.28 and 0.25, respectively; P < 0.0001 for both). CONCLUSION: Alterations of common patient-reported outcomes are present in all patients with primary SS, including those with systemic complications. However, patient symptoms and systemic complications are 2 different facets of primary SS. Therefore, the use of both systemic and patients' indices, such as the ESSDAI and ESSPRI, are useful. Since these 2 facets weakly overlap, one should identify which of both components is the main target of the treatment to test, when designing clinical trials in primary SS.

Abstract

We investigate theoretically light scattering of photons by ultracold atoms in an optical lattice in the linear regime. A full quantum theory for the atom-photon interactions is developed as a function of the atomic state in the lattice along the Mott-insulatorsuperfluid phase transition, and the photonic-scattering cross section is evaluated as a function of the energy and of the direction of emission. The predictions of this theory are compared with the theoretical results of a recent work on Bragg scattering in time-of-flight measurements [A.M. Rey et al., Phys. Rev. A 72, 023407 (2005)]. We show that, when performing Bragg spectroscopy with light scattering, the photon recoil gives rise to an additional atomic site-to-site hopping, which can interfere with ordinary tunneling of matter waves and can significantly affect the photonic-scattering cross section.

Abstract

We theoretically analyze the Bragg spectroscopic interferometer of two spatially separated atomic Bose-Einstein condensates that was experimentally realized by Saba et al. [Science 2005 307 p1945]. Although the relative phase evolution is continuously monitored by light-stimulated Bragg scattering of intense laser beams, we show that the phase is created by quantum measurement-induced back-action on the homodyne photo-current of the lasers,opening possibilities for quantum-enhanced interferometric schemes. We identify two regimes of phase evolution: a running phase regime, that is sensitive to an energy offset and suitable for an interferometer, and a trapped phase regime, that can be insensitive to applied forces and detrimental to interferometric applications.

36. Decentralisation meets local complexity: conceptual entry points, field-level findings and insights gained

Abstract

This article summarises and discusses eight case studies from Mexico, Argentina, Bolivia, Pakistan, India and Nepal that focus on the everyday realities of decentralisation. It recalls the mainstream arguments favouring decentralisation as a basic human right (i.e. to be able to participate in decision-making) and in a more utilitarian sense (i.e. decentralisation for development). The eight case studies support aspects of the mainstream; however, they also present new insights. To position these insights, the article deconstructs mainstream decentralisation discourses as based on a functionalist ontology, often leading to rather managerial and mechanistic approaches. To contrast such a functionalist position, three critical social science perspectives are introduced: the neo-Marxist view of the hegemonic state (including the notion of subalterns), Scott’s simplifying state techniques, and Midgal’s state-in-society approach. A reading of the case studies in this context highlights that decentralisation programmes often follow standardised procedures that encounter social, political, economic and ecological local complexities. Dimensions of these complexities are: already ongoing contestations among social groups; conflicting expectations upon, and interpretations of, the meaning of decentralisation; and strategic handling of decentralisation as a resource – highlighting the importance of agency. The article concludes with the proposition that decentralisation is not primarily a managerial challenge (i.e. to introduce improved governance mechanisms), but is inherently political, influenced by interests and agency, and thus contingent. The challenge for researchers and practitioners is to support adequate social processes that allow decentralisation to give local complexities more room, without fuelling local competition over the scarce resources offered by decentralisation.

Abstract

Most developing countries have made efforts to undertake decentralisation. Women and marginalised groups have enhanced their political power, and funds have been allocated to remote communities. A recent NCCR North- South publication, Decentralisation Meets Local Complexity, examines case studies in Latin America and South Asia. It confirms the importance of basic principles for successful decentralisation, such as participation, non-exclusion, efficacy, transparency and accountability. At the same time it shows that there is no “global blueprint”, as decentralisation takes place in highly complex and diverse local contexts.

Abstract

Imagery from the ERTS-1 satellite can be used to study geological and geophysical phenomena which are important in relation to Iceland's natural resources. Multispectral scanner (MSS) imagery can be used to map areas of altered ground, intense thermal emission, fallout from volcanic eruptions, lava flows, volcanic geomorphology, erosion or build-up of land, snow cover, the areal extent of glaciers and ice caps, etc. At least five distinct vegetation types and barren areas can be mapped using MSS false-color composites. Stereoscopic coverage of iceland by side-lapping ERTS imagery permits precise analysis of various natural phenomena.

Abstract

The author has identified the following significant results. The wide variety of geological and geophysical phenomena which can be observed in Iceland, and particularly their very direct relation to the management of the country's natural resources, has provided great impetus to the use of ERTS-1 imagery to measure and map the dynamic natural phenomena in Iceland. MSS imagery is being used to study a large variety of geological and geophysical eruptive products, geologic structure, volcanic geomorphology, hydrologic, oceanographic, and agricultural phenomena of Iceland. Some of the preliminary results from this research projects are: (1) a large number of geological and volcanic features can be studied from ERTS-1 imagery, particularly imagery acquired at low sun angle, which had not previously been recognized; (2) under optimum conditions the ERTS-1 satellite can discern geothermal areas by their snow melt pattern or warm spring discharge into frozen lakes; (3) various maps at scales of 1:1 million and 1:500,000 can be updated and made more accurate with ERTS-1 imagery; (4) the correlation of water reserves with snowcover can improve the basis for planning electrical production in the management of water resources; (5) false-color composites (MSS) permitted the mapping of four types of vegetation: forested; grasslands, reclaimed, and cultivated areas, and the seasonal change of the vegetation, all of high value to rangeland management.
