Abstract

Decoupling charge and heat transport is essential for optimizing thermoelectric materials. Strategies to inhibit lattice-driven heat transport, however, also compromise carrier mobility, limiting the performance of most thermoelectrics, including Fe$_2$VAl Heusler compounds. Here, we demonstrate an innovative approach, which bypasses this tradeoff: via liquid-phase sintering, we incorporate the archetypal topological insulator Bi$_{1-x}$Sb$_{x}$ between Fe$_2$V$_{0.95}$Ta$_{0.1}$Al$_{0.95}$ grains. Structural investigations alongside extensive thermoelectric and magneto-transport measurements reveal distinct modifications in the microstructure, and a reduced lattice thermal conductivity and enhanced carrier mobility are simultaneously found. This yields a huge performance boost $-$ far beyond the effective-medium limit $-$ and results in one of the highest figure of merits among both half- and full-Heusler compounds, $z\approx 1.6\times 10^{-3}\,$K$^{-1}$ ($zT\approx 0.5$) at 295 K. Our findings highlight the potential of secondary phases to decouple charge and heat transport and call for more advanced theoretical studies of multiphase composites.

Abstract

Modern organizations necessitate continuous business processes improvement to maintain efficiency, adaptability, and competitiveness. In the last few years, the Internet of Things, via the deployment of sensors and actuators, has heavily been adopted in organizational and industrial settings to monitor and automatize physical processes influencing and enhancing how people and organizations work. Such advancements are now pushed forward by the rise of the Digital Twin paradigm applied to organizational processes. Advanced ways of managing and maintaining business processes come within reach as there is a Digital Twin of a business process - a virtual replica with real-time capabilities of a real process occurring in an organization. Combining business process models with real-time data and simulation capabilities promises to provide a new way to guide day-to-day organization activities. However, integrating Digital Twins and business processes is a non-trivial task, presenting numerous challenges and ambiguities. 3. SeeBand: A highly efficient, interactive tool for analyzing electronic transport data

Abstract

Linking the fundamental physics of band structure and scattering theory with macroscopic features such as measurable bulk thermoelectric transport properties is indispensable to a thorough understanding of transport phenomena and ensures more targeted and efficient experimental research. Here, we introduce SeeBand, a highly efficient and interactive fitting tool based on Boltzmann transport theory. A fully integrated user interface and visualization tool enable real-time comparison and connection between the electronic band structure (EBS) and microscopic transport properties. It allows simultaneous analysis of data for the Seebeck coefficient $S$, resistivity $\rho$ and Hall coefficient $R_\text{H}$ to identify suitable EBS models and extract the underlying microscopic material parameters and additional information from the model. Crucially, the EBS can be obtained by directly fitting the temperature-dependent properties of a single sample, which goes beyond previous approaches that look into doping dependencies. Finally, the combination of neural-network-assisted initial guesses and an efficient subsequent fitting routine allows for a rapid processing of big datasets, facilitating high-throughput analyses to identify underlying, yet undiscovered dependencies, thereby guiding material design.

4. Cooperative Nernst Effect of Multilayer Systems: Parallel Circuit Model Study

Abstract

Transverse thermoelectric power generation has emerged as a topic of immense interest in recent years owing to the orthogonal geometry which enables better scalability and fabrication of devices. Here, we investigate the thickness dependence of longitudinal and transverse responses in film-substrate systems i.e., the Seebeck coefficient, Hall coefficient, Nernst coefficient and anomalous Nernst coefficient in a unified and general manner based on the circuit model, which describes the system as the parallel setup. By solving the parallel circuit model, we show that the transverse responses exhibit a significant peak, indicating the importance of a cooperative effect between the film and the substrate, arising from circulating currents that occur in these multilayer systems in the presence of a temperature gradient. Finally, on the basis of realistic material parameters, we predict that the Nernst effect in bismuth thin films on doped silicon substrates is boosted to unprecedented values if the thickness ratio is tuned accordingly, motivating experimental validation., Comment: 11 pages, 6 figures

Abstract

Magnetron sputtering inherently exhibits the advantage of dislodging particles from the target in a ratio equivalent to the target stoichiometry. Nevertheless, film compositions often deviate due to element-dependent scattering with the working gas, necessitating the adjustment of the sputtering process. In this work, we explore an unconventional approach of addressing this issue, involving the employment of an off-stoichiometric target. The required composition is obtained through an iterative process, which is demonstrated by Fe$_2$VAl and Fe$_2$V$_{0.9}$Ti$_{0.1}$Al films as case studies. Ultimately, the correct stoichiometry is obtained from Fe$_{1.86}$V$_{1.15}$Al$_{0.99}$ and Fe$_{1.88}$V$_{1.02}$Ti$_{0.13}$Al$_{0.97}$ targets, respectively. Despite the thermoelectric properties falling below expectations, mainly due to imperfect film crystallization, the strategy successfully achieved the desired stoichiometry, enabling accurate film synthesis without the need of advanced sputtering setups.

Abstract

Thermoelectric (TE) materials are useful for applications such as waste heat harvesting or efficient and targeted cooling. While various strategies towards superior thermoelectrics through a reduction of the lattice thermal conductivity have been developed, a path to enhance the power factor is pressing. Here, we report large power factors up to 5 mW m$^{-1}$ K$^{-2}$ at room temperature in the kagome metal Ni$_3$In$_{1-x}$Sn$_x$. This system is predicted to feature almost dispersionless flat bands in conjunction with highly dispersive Dirac-like bands in its electronic structure around the Fermi energy $E_\text{F}$ [L. Ye et al., Nature Physics 1-5 (2024)]. Within this study, we experimentally and theoretically showcase that tuning this flat band precisely below $E_\text{F}$ by chemical doping $x$ boosts the Seebeck coefficient and power factor, as highly mobile charge carriers scatter into the flat-band states. Our work demonstrates the prospect of engineering extremely flat and highly dispersive bands towards the Fermi energy in kagome metals and introduces topological flat bands as a novel tuning knob for thermoelectrics.

10. Heteroaryl derivatives of suvorexant as OX1R selective PET ligand candidates: Cu-mediated 18F-fluorination of boroxines, in vitro and initial in vivo evaluation

Abstract

Abstract Background The orexin receptor (OXR) plays a role in drug addiction and is aberrantly expressed in colorectal tumors. Subtype-selective OXR PET ligands suitable for in vivo use have not yet been reported. This work reports the development of 18F-labeled OXR PET ligand candidates derived from the OXR antagonist suvorexant and the OX1R-selective antagonist JH112. Results Computational analysis predicted that fluorine substitution (1e) and introduction of the fluorobenzothiazole scaffold (1f) would be suitable for maintaining high OX1R affinity. After multi-step synthesis of 1a–1f, in vitro OXR binding studies confirmed the molecular dynamics calculations and revealed single-digit nanomolar OX1R affinities for 1a–f, ranging from 0.69 to 2.5 nM. The benzothiazole 1f showed high OX1R affinity (Ki = 0.69 nM), along with 77-fold subtype selectivity over OX2R. Cu-mediated 18F-fluorination of boroxine precursors allowed for a shortened reaction time of 5 min to provide the non-selective OXR ligand [18F]1c and its selective OX1R congener [18F]1f in activity yields of 14% and 22%, respectively, within a total synthesis time of 52–76 min. [18F]1c and [18F]1f were stable in plasma and serum in vitro, with logD7.4 of 2.28 ([18F]1c) and 2.37 ([18F]1f), and high plasma protein binding of 66% and 77%, respectively. Dynamic PET imaging in rats showed similar brain uptake of [18F]1c (0.17%ID/g) and [18F]1f (0.15%ID/g). However, preinjection of suvorexant did not significantly block [18F]1c or [18F]1f uptake in the rat brain. Pretreatment with cyclosporine A to study the role of P-glycoprotein (P-gp) in limiting brain accumulation moderately increased brain uptake of [18F]1c and [18F]1f. Abstract

Ambient energy harvesting has great potential to contribute to sustainable development and address growing environmental challenges. Converting waste energy from energy-intensive processes and systems (e.g. combustion engines and furnaces) is crucial to reducing their environmental impact and achieving net-zero emissions. Compact energy harvesters will also be key to powering the exponentially growing smart devices ecosystem that is part of the Internet of Things, thus enabling futuristic applications that can improve our quality of life (e.g. smart homes, smart cities, smart manufacturing, and smart healthcare). To achieve these goals, innovative materials are needed to efficiently convert ambient energy into electricity through various physical mechanisms, such as the photovoltaic effect, thermoelectricity, piezoelectricity, triboelectricity, and radiofrequency wireless power transfer. By bringing together the perspectives of experts in various types of energy harvesting materials, this Roadmap provides extensive insights into recent advances and present challenges in the field. Additionally, the Roadmap analyses the key performance metrics of these technologies in relation to their ultimate energy conversion limits. Building on these insights, the Roadmap outlines promising directions for future research to fully harness the potential of energy harvesting materials for green energy anytime, anywhere.

Abstract

Thermoelectric (TE) materials seamlessly convert thermal into electrical energy and vice versa, making them promising for applications such as power generation or cooling. Although historically the TE effect was first discovered in metals, state-of-the-art research mainly focuses on doped semiconductors with large figure of merit, $zT$, that determines the conversion efficiency of TE devices. While metallic alloys have superior functional properties, such as high ductility and mechanical strength, they have mostly been discarded from investigation in the past due to their small Seebeck effect. Here, we realize unprecedented TE performance in metals by tuning the energy-dependent electronic scattering. Based on our theoretical predictions, we identify binary NiAu alloys as promising candidate materials and experimentally discover colossal power factors up to 34 mWm$^{-1}$K$^{-2}$ (on average 30 mWm$^{-1}$K$^{-2}$ from 300 to 1100 K), which is more than twice larger than in any known bulk material above room temperature. This system reaches a $zT$ up to 0.5, setting a new world record value for metals. NiAu alloys are not only orders of magnitude more conductive than heavily doped semiconductors, but also have large Seebeck coefficients originating from an inherently different physical mechanism: within the Au s band conduction electrons are highly mobile while holes are scattered into more localized Ni d states, yielding a strongly energy-dependent carrier mobility. Our work challenges the common belief that good metals are bad thermoelectrics and presents an auspicious paradigm for achieving high TE performance in metallic alloys through engineering electron-hole selective s-d scattering.

Abstract

Abstract Microeukaryotes are key contributors to marine carbon cycling. Their physiology, ecology, and interactions with the chemical environment are poorly understood in offshore ecosystems, and especially in the deep ocean. Using the Autonomous Underwater Vehicle Clio, microbial communities along a 1050 km transect in the western North Atlantic Ocean were surveyed at 10–200 m vertical depth increments to capture metabolic signatures spanning oligotrophic, continental margin, and productive coastal ecosystems. Microeukaryotes were examined using a paired metatranscriptomic and metaproteomic approach. Here we show a diverse surface assemblage consisting of stramenopiles, dinoflagellates and ciliates represented in both the transcript and protein fractions, with foraminifera, radiolaria, picozoa, and discoba proteins enriched at >200 m, and fungal proteins emerging in waters >3000 m. In the broad microeukaryote community, nitrogen stress biomarkers were found at coastal sites, with phosphorus stress biomarkers offshore. This multi-omics dataset broadens our understanding of how microeukaryotic taxa and their functional processes are structured along environmental gradients of temperature, light, and nutrients.

25. A MAUDE database analysis on the new generation of active bone conduction hearing implants

Abstract

Abstract Objective To analyze medical device reports (MDR) submitted to the Food and Drug Administration's (FDA) Manufacturer and User Device Facility Experience (MAUDE) database to identify adverse events (AEs) in patients implanted with novel active bone conduction hearing implants (BCIs). Methods We conducted a search of the FDA MAUDE database on the newest generation of BCIs. Data were collected concerning device malfunctions, patient injuries, factors triggering these incidents, and the subsequent actions taken. Results In total, 93 (16.7%) device malfunctions and 465 (83.3%) patient injuries with 358 subsequent interventions were identified, resulting in 558 AEs. Although the absolute AE number per device cannot be identified, the following trends were detected: Among the 494 AEs associated with OSI200, 55 (11.1%) reported device malfunctions and 454 (88.9%) cited patient injuries. Out of the 64 AEs linked to BCI602, 28 (59.4%) were associated with malfunctions, whereas 26 (40.6%) involved patient injuries. The most frequently reported particular AEs for the OSI200 were infection (n = 171, 34.6%), extrusion of the device (n = 107, 21.7%), and pain (n = 51, 10.3%). Conversely, no device output (n = 20, 31.3%) and loss of osseointegration (n = 7, 10.9%) were the most reported AEs for the BCI602. Various AEs led to 214 explanations and 77 revision surgeries. Sixty‐seven AEs reported conservative treatment. Conclusion The current study provides an overview of the most commonly reported complications with new active BCIs. Although providing an overview, given the limitations of the FDA MAUDE database, our results have to be interpreted with caution. Level of Evidence 4.

Abstract

Y3Cu9(OH)19Cl8 realizes an original anisotropic kagome model hosting a rich magnetic phase diagram [M. Hering et al, npj Computational Materials 8, 1 (2022)]. We present an improved synthesis of large phase-pure single crystals via an external gradient method. These crystals were investigated in details by susceptibility, specific heat, thermal expansion, neutron scattering and local muSR and NMR techniques. At variance with polycristalline samples, the study of single crystals gives evidence for subtle structural instabilities at 33K and 13K which preserve the global symmetry of the system and thus the magnetic model. At 2.1K the compound shows a magnetic transition to a coplanar (1/3,1/3) long range order as predicted theoretically. However our analysis of the spin wave excitations yields magnetic interactions which locate the compound closer to the phase boundary to a classical jammed spin liquid phase. Enhanced quantum fluctuations at this boundary may be responsible for the strongly reduced ordered moment of the Cu2+, estimated to be 0.075muB from muSR.

Abstract

Abstract Positron emission tomography (PET) is a powerful imaging technique for biomedical research, drug development and medical diagnosis. The power of PET lies in biochemically selective radiotracers, labelled with positron emitters like fluorine-18 image chemical processes in vivo. A rapid and remarkably efficient, unprecedented protocol to select between S-F and C-F bond formation based on activation of 1,1-difluoroethylene groups followed by selective oxidation or reduction is described. While transition metal mediated conditions can be employed, the reaction proceeds in high yield using unobjectionable chemical reagents amenable to routine radiotracer production. The latter bodes well for facile clinical translation of the method. The new technique affords radiotracers and the labelling reagent 2,2-difluoro-2-(fluoro-18F)ethyl 4-methylbenzenesulfonate ([18F]1b) in excellent yield. Following oxygenation of the reaction mixture with medical oxygen or air, sulfonyl fluorides are obtained as the primary product. The new protocol was employed in a proof of principle to develop a radiometric assay for quantitation of sulfonylation yield with sulfonyl fluoride reagents. With operational ease and mild conditions, the method bodes a high potential for radiolabelling of biomolecules, known enzyme inhibitors and other temperature-sensitive compounds.

Abstract

Abstract Background Literature suggests colonic resection and primary anastomosis (RPA) instead of Hartmann’s procedure (HP) for the treatment of left-sided colonic emergencies. We aim to evaluate the surgical options globally used to treat patients with acute left-sided colonic emergencies and the factors that leading to the choice of treatment, comparing HP and RPA. Methods This is a prospective, international, multicenter, observational study registered on ClinicalTrials.gov. A total 1215 patients with left-sided colonic emergencies who required surgery were included from 204 centers during the period of March 1, 2020, to May 31, 2020. with a 1-year follow-up. Results 564 patients (43.1%) were females. The mean age was 65.9 ± 15.6 years. HP was performed in 697 (57.3%) patients and RPA in 384 (31.6%) cases. Complicated acute diverticulitis was the most common cause of left-sided colonic emergencies (40.2%), followed by colorectal malignancy (36.6%). Abstract

IntroductionPrimary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT) is the third most common endocrine disease. With parathyroidectomy, a cure rate of over 95% at initial surgery is reported. Localization of the abnormal parathyroid gland is critical for the operation to be successful. The aim of this study is to analyze data of patients with single gland disease (SGD) and positive concordant localization imaging undergoing minimally invasive parathyroidectomy (MIP) and intraoperative parathyroid hormone monitoring (IOPTH) to evaluate if IOPTH is still justified in patients with localized SGD.MethodsA retrospective database analysis of all minimally invasive operations with IOPTH for PHPT and positive concordant localization in ultrasound (US) and 99mTc-sestamibi scintigraphy (MIBI) between 2016-2021. When both US and MIBI were negative, patients underwent either choline or methionine PET-CT. The patients were also analyzed a second time without applying IOPTH.ResultsIn total, 198 patients were included in the study. The sensitivity of US, MIBI and PET-CT was 96%, 94% and 100%, respectively. Positive predictive value was 88%, 89% and 94% with US, MIBI and PET-CT, respectively. IOPTH was true positive in 185 (93.4%) patients. In 13 (6.6%) patients, no adequate IOPTH decline was observed after localizing and extirpating the assumed enlarged parathyroid gland. Without IOPTH, the cure rate decreased from 195 (98.5%) to 182 (92%) patients and the rate of persisting disease increased from 2 (1.0%) to 15 (7.5%) patients.ConclusionDiscontinuing IOPTH significantly increases the persistence rate by a factor of 7.5 in patients with concordantly localized adenoma. Therefore, IOPTH appears to remain necessary even for this group of patients.

Abstract

Abstract The electronic structure defines the properties of graphene-based nanomaterials. Scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy (STM/STS) experiments on graphene nanoribbons (GNRs), nanographenes, and nanoporous graphene (NPG) often determine an apparent electronic orbital confinement into the edges and nanopores, leading to dubious interpretations such as image potential states or super-atom molecular orbitals. We show that these measurements are subject to a wave function decay into the vacuum that masks the undisturbed electronic orbital shape. We use Au(111)-supported semiconducting gulf-type GNRs and NPGs as model systems fostering frontier orbitals that appear confined along the edges and nanopores in STS measurements. DFT calculations confirm that these states originate from valence and conduction bands. The deceptive electronic orbital confinement observed is caused by a loss of Fourier components, corresponding to states of high momentum. This effect can be generalized to other 1D and 2D carbon-based nanoarchitectures and is important for their use in catalysis and sensing applications.

Abstract

Transverse thermoelectric power generation has emerged as a topic of immense interest in recent years owing to the orthogonal geometry which enables better scalability and fabrication of devices. Here, we investigate the thickness dependence of longitudinal and transverse responses in film-substrate systems, i.e., the Seebeck coefficient, the Hall coefficient, the Nernst coefficient, and the anomalous Nernst coefficient in a unified and general manner based on the circuit model, which describes the system as the parallel setup. By solving the parallel circuit model, we show that the transverse responses exhibit a significant peak, indicating the importance of a cooperative effect between the film and the substrate, arising from circulating currents that occur in these multilayer systems in the presence of a temperature gradient. Finally, on the basis of realistic material parameters, we predict that the Nernst effect in bismuth thin films on doped silicon substrates is boosted to unprecedented values if the thickness ratio is tuned accordingly, motivating experimental validation.

Abstract

Heusler compounds with semiconducting properties represent an important class of functional materials. Usually, research on these systems is guided by simple electron-counting rules, such as the Slater-Pauling principle. Here, we report on the discovery of Heusler-type semiconductors, significantly deviating from the Slater-Pauling rule. We theoretically predict the occurrence of nonmagnetic semiconducting ground states in various highly off-stoichiometric full-Heusler alloys, where self-substitution leads to a band-gap opening. This unexpected trend is confirmed experimentally by thermoelectric transport measurements on a multitude of Fe_{2−2x}V_{1−x}Al_{1+3x} samples with up to 20% substitution of Fe and V atoms. The band-gap opening leads to an exceptionally large Seebeck coefficient in p-type Fe_{2}VAl thermoelectrics, previously limited by bipolar conduction and low-density-of-states effective mass. Consequently, our work presents a paradigm to tune the band gap of Heusler compounds by self-substitution and introduces a hitherto unexplored class of semiconductors with exceptional thermoelectric properties, offering significant potential for advancements in energy science and sustainable-energy technologies.

Abstract

The spatial arrangement of adsorbates deposited onto a clean surface in vacuum typically cannot be reversibly tuned. Here we use scanning tunneling microscopy to demonstrate that molecules deposited onto graphene field-effect transistors exhibit reversible, electrically-tunable surface concentration. Continuous gate-tunable control over the surface concentration of charged F4TCNQ molecules was achieved on a graphene FET at T = 4.5K. This capability enables precisely controlled impurity doping of graphene devices and also provides a new method for determining molecular energy level alignment based on the gate-dependence of molecular concentration. The gate-tunable molecular concentration can be explained by a dynamical molecular rearrangement process that reduces total electronic energy by maintaining Fermi level pinning in the device substrate. Molecular surface concentration in this case is fully determined by the device back-gate voltage, its geometric capacitance, and the energy difference between the graphene Dirac point and the molecular LUMO level.

Abstract

Even in digital workflows, models are required for fitting during the fabrication of dental prostheses. This study examined the influence of different parameters on the dimensional accuracy of three-dimensionally printed models. A stereolithographic data record was generated from a master model (SOLL). With digital light processing (DLP) and stereolithography (SLA) printing systems, 126 models were produced in several printing runs—SolFlex350 (S) (DLP, n = 24), CaraPrint 4.0 (C) (DLP, n = 48) and Form2 (F) (SLA, n = 54)—and their accuracy was compared with plaster and milled polyurethane models. In addition to the positioning on the build platform, a distinction was made between parallel and across arrangement of the models to the printer’s front, solid and hollow models, and printing with and without support structures. For accuracy assessment, five measurement sections were defined on the model (A–E) and measured using a calibrated digital calliper and digital scans in combination with the GOM Inspect Professional software 2021. The mean deviation between the measurement methods for all distances was 79 µm. The mean deviation of the models from the digital SOLL model were 207.1 µm for the S series, 25.1 µm for the C series and 141.8 µm for the F series. While positioning did not have an influence, there were clinically relevant differences mainly regarding the choice of printer, but also individually in alignment, model structure and support structures.

Abstract

The journey of drug discovery (DD) has evolved from ancient practices to modern technology-driven approaches, with Artificial Intelligence (AI) emerging as a pivotal force in streamlining and accelerating the process. Despite the vital importance of DD, it faces challenges such as high costs and lengthy timelines. This review examines the historical progression and current market of DD alongside the development and integration of AI technologies. We analyse the challenges encountered in applying AI to DD, focusing on drug design and protein–protein interactions. The discussion is enriched by presenting models that put forward the application of AI in DD. Three case studies are highlighted to demonstrate the successful application of AI in DD, including the discovery of a novel class of antibiotics and a small-molecule inhibitor that has progressed to phase II clinical trials. These cases underscore the potential of AI to identify new drug candidates and optimise the development process. The convergence of DD and AI embodies a transformative shift in the field, offering a path to overcome traditional obstacles. By leveraging AI, the future of DD promises enhanced efficiency and novel breakthroughs, heralding a new era of medical innovation even though there is still a long way to go.
