Abstract

Many volcanoes exhibit temporal changes in their degassing process, from rapid gas puffing to lava fountaining and long-lasting quiescent passive degassing periods. This range of behaviors has been explained in terms of changes in gas flux and/or magma input rate. We report here a simple laboratory experiment which shows that the non- Newtonian rheology of magma can be responsible, alone, for such intriguing behavior, even in a stationary gas flux regime. We inject a constant gas flow-rate Q at the bottom of a non-Newtonian fluid column, and demonstrate the existence of a critical flow rate Q* above which the system spontaneously alternates between a bubbling and a channeling regime, where a gas channel crosses the entire fluid column. The threshold Q* depends on the fluid rheological properties which are controlled, in particular, by the gas volume fraction (or void fraction) {\phi}. When {\phi} increases, Q* decreases and the degassing regime changes. Abstract

In order to assess the physical mechanisms at stake when giant gas bubbles burst at the top of a magma conduit, laboratory experiments have been performed. An overpressurized gas cavity is initially closed by a thin liquid film, which suddenly bursts. The acoustic signal produced by the bursting is investigated. The key result is that the amplitude and energy of the acoustic signal strongly depend on the film rupture time. As the rupture time is uncontrolled in the experiments and in the field, the measurement of the acoustic excess pressure in the atmosphere, alone, cannot provide any information on the overpressure inside the bubble before explosion. This could explain the low energy partitioning between infrasound, seismic and explosive dynamics often observed on volcanoes.

Abstract

Continuous seismic monitoring of volcanoes is challenging due to harsh environments and associated hazards. However, the investigation of volcanic phenomena is essential for eruption forecasting. In seismo-volcanic applications, distributed acoustic sensing (DAS) offers new possibilities for long-duration surveys. We analyse DAS strain rate signals generated by volcanic explosions and tremor at Stromboli volcano (Italy) recorded along 1 km of dedicated fibre-optic cable. We validate DAS recordings with colocated nodal seismometers. Converting node measurements to strain rate, we observe a perfect match in phase between DAS and node waveforms. However, DAS amplitudes appear to be around 2.7 times smaller than those of node records, which we explain as due to the inefficient ground-to-fibre strain transfer in the loose cable. We invert time delays between strain rate waveforms and confirm that the DAS enables us to retrieve a dominant and persistent seismic source in the proximity of active craters. This stable source location is confirmed by node array analyses. Despite an observed high noise level of strain rate signals outside a range of 2–15 Hz, our results demonstrate the potential of this new technology in monitoring volcanic areas. 20. Coupling weather radar, infrasound and thermal camera for near real time tephra fall hazard assessment: Etna case studies

Abstract

The explosive activities of Mt. Etna (Italy) typically implicate medium-high hazard correlated both to tephra fallout in the surrounding area which can damage buildings roofs, block road networks, etc., and to dispersion of finest volcanic particles in the atmosphere causing serious airway complications and health damages.This work intends to show the synergy between the weather radar integrated with the thermal camera and the infrasonic network system aimed at providing a near real time hazard assessment during the Etna explosive activities. We analyze several eruptions occurred between 2011 and 2021 at Etna and simultaneously observed by the thermal camera and infrasound systems dislocated around the summit eruptive craters, and by the weather radar, about 32 km far from the summit craters. We developed a new combined a methodology to quantify in near real-time tephra fall hazard. We define a paroxysmal early warning as notice time computed combining timing outputs from two different systems. Although each volcanic event is different in intensity, time duration and explosive characteristics, generally we derive a positive alert camming from coupling the infrasonic system with the weather radar and the thermal camera. This work represents an important step to mitigate the volcanic hazard related to tephra fallout and could show its potential if full implemented in near real-time monitoring during Etna eruptive activities., The 28th IUGG General Assembly (IUGG2023) (Berlin 2023)

Abstract

Tephra dispersal and fallout resulting from explosive activity of Mt. Etna (Italy) represent a significant threat to the surrounding inhabited areas as well as to aviation operations. An early-warning system aimed at foreseeing the onset of paroxysmal activity has been developed, combining a thermal infrared camera, infrasonic network, and a weather radar. In this way, it is possible to identify the onset of a lava fountain as well as to determine the associated mass eruption rate (MER) and top plume height (HTP). The new methodology, defined as the paroxysmal early-warning (PEW) alert system, is based on the analysis of some explosive eruptions that occurred between 2011 and 2021 at Etna, simultaneously observed by the thermal camera and infrasound systems dislocated around the summit eruptive craters, and by the weather radar, located at about 32 km from the summit craters. This work represents an important step towards the mitigation of the potential impact associated with the tephra dispersal and fallout during paroxysms at Etna, which can be applied to other volcanoes with similar activity and monitoring strategies. Abstract

International audience; In many areas with high telluric hazard, our understanding of the seismogenic and mechanical processes is limited by the difficulty or impossibility to deploy arrays of high performance seismometers or of other geophsyical sensors, due to high cost and/or difficulty of the installation and maintenance. This led us to develope several optical instruments: the idea was to separate, by a long optical fiber, the robust mechanical part of the sensor from the opto-electronic part, which interrogates the sensor and measures its internal deformation with Fabry-Perot (FP) interferometry. Our IPGP-ESEO team has thus constructed innovative optical seismometers and strainmeters, complemented by borehole and long base optical tiltmeters from Geoscience Montpellier and ENS. Here we present the ESEO-IPGP instruments, and their successful installation in the field: one seismometer at the top of La Soufrière volcano (1.5 km long fiber), 10/2019 (ANR HIPERSIS ); one ocean-bottom seismometer offshore Les Saintes, 06/2021 (FIBROSAINTES, Interreg Caraïbe PREST) (5 km long fiber buried by a plow GEOAZUR); and one strainmeter on the Stromboli volcano (09/2021).
