O presente artigo tem como objetivo estimar e comparar diferentes indicadores de fecundidade de período, com enfoque naqueles que corrigem distorções causadas na taxa de fecundidade total (TFT) observada em determinado período, a fim de criar e avaliar novas possibilidades de análise da fecundidade no Brasil. São apresentadas séries de TFT, TFT PPR, PATFR, PATFRajustada (K-O), PDTFR e PADTFR, bem como as séries históricas dos efeitos tempo e parturição e da idade média da fecundidade. Foram utilizados os bancos de dados sobre histórias de nascimentos, obtidos a partir das edições de 1980, 1991 e 2000 do Censo Demográfico brasileiro. Os resultados mostram que, no Brasil, a transição da fecundidade foi acompanhada, durante praticamente todo o período de análise, por um efeito tempo negativo e um efeito parturição positivo, que atuaram no sentido de inflar a fecundidade observada. No futuro próximo, a fecundidade observada no Brasil deverá ser diminuída, principalmente pela ação do efeito tempo positivo. The authors estimate and compare fertility indicators for different periods, focusing on those that correct distortions in the total fecundity rate (TFR) for a given period. The purpose is to raise and evaluate new possibilities of fertility analysis in Brazil. The indicators TFR, TFRPPR, PATFR, PATFRadjusted (K-O), PDTFR, and PADTFR are presented, as well as historical series of tempo and parity effects (K-O model) and mean age at childbearing. The data were taken from a database of birth histories obtained from the 1980, 1991, and 2000 Brazilian demographic censuses. Results show that changes in fertility in Brazil were accompanied by a negative tempo effect and a positive parity effect, meaning that the TFR observed was inflated. In the near future the Brazilian TFR may fall due to tempo effect. El presente artículo tiene el objetivo de estimar y comparar distintos indicadores de fecundidad de periodo, con enfoque en aquellos que corrigen distorsiones ocasionadas en la tasa de fecundidad total (TFT) observada en determinado periodo, a fin de crear y evaluar nuevas posibilidades de analizar la fecundidad en Brasil. Se presentan series de TFT, TFT PPR, PATFR, PATFRajustada (K-O), PDTFR y PADTFR, así como las series históricas de los efectos tiempo y paridez y de la edad promedio de la fecundidad. Se utilizaron bancos de datos sobre historias de nacimientos, obtenidos a partir de las ediciones de 1980, 1991 y 2000 del Censo Demográfico brasileño. Los resultados muestran que en Brasil la transición de la fecundidad fue acompañada, durante prácticamente todo el periodo de análisis, por un efecto tiempo negativo y un efecto paridez positivo, que actuaron en el sentido de inflar la fecundidad observada. En el futuro próximo, la fecundidad observada en Brasil deberá disminuir, principalmente debido a la acción del efecto tiempo positivo.

To assess the quality of school education, much of educational research is concerned with comparisons of test scores means or medians. In this paper, we shift this focus and explore test scores data by addressing some often neglected questions. In the case of Brazil, the mean of test scores in Math for students of the fourth grade has declined approximately 0,2 standard deviation in the late 1990s. But what about changes in the distribution of scores? It is unclear whether the decline was caused by deterioration in student performance in upper and/or lower tails of the distribution. To answer this question, we propose the use of the relative distribution method developed by Handcock and Morris (1999). The advantage of this methodology is that it compares two distributions of test scores data through a single distribution and synthesizes all the differences between them. Moreover, it is possible to decompose the total difference between two distributions in a level effect (changes in median) and shape effect (changes in shape of the distribution). We find that the decline of average-test scores is mainly caused by a worsening in the position of all students throughout the distribution of scores and is not only specific to any quantile of distribution.

O objetivo desse artigo é analisar o efeito dos filhos sobre a participação das mulheres na População Economicamente Ativa (PEA), observando a evolução temporal desse efeito desde os anos de 1990. Além disso, com base no fato de que cada filho possa apresentar um efeito diferenciado sobre a decisão de trabalho das mães, estimou-se, separadamente, o efeito do primeiro, do segundo e do terceiro (ou mais) filhos sobre a participação feminina na PEA. De maneira geral, os resultados sugerem que, independentemente da ordem de nascimento, os filhos diminuem a probabilidade de participação das mulheres no mercado de trabalho. Ademais, entre as décadas de 1990 e 2000, o efeito negativo do primeiro e segundo filhos sobre a participação feminina no mercado de trabalho perdeu magnitude, ao passo que o efeito do terceiro filho ganhou importância. El objetivo de este artículo es analizar el efecto de los hijos sobre la participación de las mujeres en la Población Económicamente Activa (PEA), observando la evolución temporal de este efecto desde los años 90. Asimismo, en base al hecho de que cada hijo pueda presentar un efecto diferenciado sobre la decisión de trabajar de las madres, se estimó, por separado, el efecto del primer, del segundo y del tercer (o más) hijos sobre la participación femenina en la PEA. De manera general, los resultados sugieren que, independientemente del orden de nacimiento, los hijos disminuyen la probabilidad de participación de las mujeres en el mercado de trabajo. Además, entre las décadas de 1990 y 2000, el efecto negativo del primer y segundo hijos sobre la participación femenina en el mercado de trabajo perdió magnitud, al mismo tiempo que el efecto del tercer hijo ganó importancia. The objective here is to analyze the effect of having children on women's share in the economically active population, observing the temporal evolution of this effect during the 1990s. In addition, based on the fact that each child may exert a different effect on a mother's decision to work or not, the effect of the first, the second and the third (or more) children on this woman's share in the economically active population were estimated. In general the findings suggest that, regardless of order of birth, children reduce the likelihood of women to participate in the labor market. Also, during the 1990s and the decade of 2000 the negative effect of the first and second children on women's share in the labor market fell in impact, whereas the effect of a third child took on some importance.

This article shows evidence regarding the educational attainment and inequality of educational opportunities in Brazil based on the grade progression probability method (GPP) between the years 1981 and 2008. We describe some stylised facts about the educational trajectory in Brazil, then we test two hypothesis suggested by Mare (1979, 1980). The first hypothesis states that the effect of social origins decreases along the educational trajectory. The second states that the educational expansion between two periods would reduce the inequality of educational opportunities in a given grade. Results show an increase in grade probability in nearly all grades, but this trend is most striking in the earlier stages. Educational stratification results show that Mare’s first hypothesis could not be corroborated. The second hypothesis was partly confirmed. We found a decline during the period analysed on the effect of household head’s education on grade progression at the earlier transitions. Furthermore, the selectivity pattern seemed to be transferred to later grade transitions.

Na trajetória escolar das pessoas, vários fatores podem influenciar seu sucesso, entre os quais se destacam aqueles relacionados ao ambiente familiar e a disponibilidade e qualidade da infra-estrutura da escola e seus professores. No Brasil, a maioria dos trabalhos demonstra a grande importância da família na educação de seus filhos, indicando a forte estratificação educacional. Porém, resta saber como a qualidade da escola e dos seus docentes pode diminuir essa estratificação. Esse artigo busca investigar os determinantes do resultado educacional nos níveis de ensino fundamental e médio no Brasil, considerando fatores relacionados ao background familiar e a estrutura escolar dos municípios. Essa análise é importante por examinar quais fatores do perfil escolar dos municípios podem diminuir a importância do ambiente familiar, no sentido de reduzir a estratificação educacional, ou seja, a relação entre a trajetória escolar do indivíduo e sua origem social. En la trayectoria escolar de las personas, varios factores pueden influenciar su éxito, entre los cuales se destacan aquéllos relacionados con el ambiente familiar y la disponibilidad y calidad de la infraestructura de la escuela y sus profesores. En Brasil, la mayoría de los trabajos demuestra la gran importancia de la familia en la educación de sus hijos, indicando la fuerte estratificación educacional. Sin embargo, resta saber como la calidad de la escuela y de sus docentes puede disminuir esa estratificación. Este artículo busca investigar los determinantes del resultado educacional en los niveles de enseñanza fundamental y media en Brasil, considerando factores relacionados al background familiar y a la estructura escolar de los municipios. Este análisis es importante por examinar qué factores del perfil escolar de los municipios pueden disminuir la importancia del ambiente familiar, en el sentido de reducir la estratificación educacional, o sea, la relación entre la trayectoria escolar del individuo y su origen social. Many factors converge to define the success attained by individual students, including family background, school infrastructure and quality of teaching. Most studies in Brazil call attention to the great importance of the family in children's education, and indicate the country's considerable educational stratification. However, it is important to discuss how the quality of schools and teachers can reduce this stratification. This article describes a study on how to investigate the determinants of educational results in grade, middle and high schools in Brazil, considering both family background and local school structures. The analysis consists of an examination of what aspects of the profiles of local schools may help reduce the influence of family environment on educational stratification. The question, then, is how to lower the importance of the relationship between individual school experiences and social patterns among students.

Orientador: Elza Salvatori Berquo Tese (doutorado) - Universidade Estadual de Campinas, Instituto de Filosofia e Ciencias Humanas Resumo: A tese trata das descontinuidades demográficas no Brasil, com seu desdobramento na configuração das chamadas ondas jovens, e da questão da crescente violência entre os jovens, particularmente nos grandes centros metropolitanos. A observação dos dados censitários a partir dos anos quarenta permitiu detectar, através da análise de coortes, a presença das descontinuidades demográficas, definir e mensurar as ondas de jovens por elas geradas e o desenvolvimento de uma metodologia para o estudo das descontinuidades e ondas nos diversos grupos sociais. Avalia-se o impacto das ondas de jovens na composição do mercado de trabalho nas três últimas décadas e elaboram-se reflexões sobre seus desdobramentos no cenário sócio-político, apontando as concordâncias e descompassos entre os fenômenos demográficos e o contexto econômico e social de cada período.Analisam-se os indicadores de violência entre os jovens, aproximados pelo número de anos de vida perdidos por causas violentas, na década de oitenta, para Brasil, as Grandes Regiões e as Áreas Metropolitanas de Rio de Janeiro e São Paulo. Os indicadores destas duas áreas foram calculados também para a década de noventa verificando sua evolução em termos absolutos e relativos. Inclui-se ainda uma análise da evolução da composição da mortalidade de jovens por causas externas, em particular a participação do grupo dos homicídios e a utilização de armas de fogo. O trabalho mostra o forte potencial da Demografia como ciência social aplicada e sua especificidade na mensuração e análise de fenômenos relevantes para o planejamento, monitoramento e avaliação de ações que visem à melhoria das condições de vida e diminuição das desigualdades presentes na sociedade brasileira Abstract: The thesis deals with demographic discontinuities in Brazil, their consequences on the configuration of the so-called young waves, and the issue of increasing violence amongst young people, especially in the large metropolitan centers. Observation of the census data as from the Forties enabled the presence of demographic discontinuities to be detected by cohort analysis, the young waves, generated by them to be defined and measured and a methodology to be developed to study the discontinuities and waves in the various social groups. The impact of the waves of young people on the composition of the labor market over the last three decades is evaluated and reflections on their consequences on the socio-political scenario are made, indicating the concordances and mismatches between the demographic phenomena and the economic and social context of each period. The indicators of violence amongst young people are analyzed, considering the number of years of life lost due to violent causes as a proxy for them. The calculations are done for Brazil, the regions and the metropolitan areas of Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo, in the Eighties, and updated for the Nineties, for the last two areas, verifying their changes in absolute and relative terms. An analysis of the evolution of the composition of the mortality of young people due to external causes is also included, especially the participation in the homicides and the use of firearms. Orientador: Jose Marcos Pinto da Cunha Tese (doutorado) - Universidade Estadual de Campinas, Instituto de Filosofia e Ciencias Humanas Resumo: O trabalho investiga a evolução da pobreza em Sergipe e as características de sua manifestação nos municípios sergipanos, a partir dos anos 80. O quadro de referência sobre o qual o estudo é desenvolvido contempla três pilares: modificações na economia sergipana, alterações na estrutura produtiva, no mercado de trabalho e na composição da renda segundo fontes e, sob uma perspectiva demográfica, as transformações na estrutura populacional de correntes da redução da fecundidade, aumento da esperança de vida e do caráter seletivo da migração. O estudo parte da constatação de que, entre 1985 e 2005, houve alívio significativo de todos os indicadores de pobreza, ao mesmo tempo em que a economia do estado atravessou um período de redução e estagnação do produto, o mercado de trabalho reproduziu o processo de desestruturação, cujas principais vertentes foram, aumento expressivo das atividades terciárias, avanço da informalidade, agravamento da desocupação e desemprego, precarização das relações de trabalho, piora na qualidade das ocupações e depreciação da renda do trabalho. Supõe, portanto, a existência de fatores demográficos fundamentais que, tão importante quanto aqueles de natureza econômica, influenciam tais indicadores de pobreza. Mostra que, para o agregado estadual, a "janela demográfica" ou "bônus demográfico" conjuntamente à melhoria no acesso às aposentadorias e no valor pago por esses benefícios foram elementos fundamentais para explicar a redução da pobreza. Nos municípios do Interior sergipano, a migração para a Região da Grande Aracaju contribuiu para aumentar no local de origem a participação relativa das pessoas com maior idade, portanto eletivas de programas sociais e com acesso crescente aos benefícios previdenciários. O reflexo dessa mudança na composição populacional foi, portanto, o de contribuir para a redução da pobreza no Interior. Na RGA, por outro lado, o afluxo dessa população em busca de melhor renda ou emprego aumentou a pressão sobre o já insuficiente mercado de trabalho local. Mesmo tendo maior dinamismo econômico, essa pressão certamente contribuiu para que a pobreza mantivesse, em 2000, o mesmo nível de incidência de 1980. Abstract: The study investigates the evolution of poverty in Sergipe and the characteristics of its manifestation in the municipalities of Sergipe from the 80s. The frame of reference on which the study is developed has three pillars: changes in the economy, changes in production structure, in the labor market, and on composition of income sources, from a demographic perspective, the changes in population structure of chain the reduction in fertility, increased life expectancy and the selective nature of migration. The study starts the observation that, between 1985 and 2005, there was significant relief of all indicators of poverty at the same time as the economy of the state through a period of stagnation and reduction of the product, the labor market replicated the process of destructuring, whose main elements were significant increase of tertiary activities, advancement of informality, unemployment and worsening of unemployment, precariousness of employment relationships, worsening the quality of jobs and reduction of income from work. Suppose, therefore, the existence of key demographic factors that, as important as those of economic nature, influence such indicators of poverty. Shows that, for the aggregate state, the "demographic window" or "demographic bonus" together with the improve access to retirement and the amount paid for these benefits were key elements to explain the reduction of poverty. In the municipalities of upcontry, migration to the Region of Great Aracaju contributed to increase in the place of origin on the participation of people with older age, so elective social programs and increasing access to benefits. The effect of this change in the composition of population was, therefore, contribute to poverty reduction in the inland. In the RGA, on the other hand, the influx of population in search of better income or employment increased the pressure on already insufficient local labor market. Even with greater economic dynamism, certainly contributed to this pressure that poverty persist in 2000, the same level of incidence in 1980. Doutorado Demografia Doutor em Demografia

Given the importance that the immigration issue has acquired in the country in recent years, it generated a need for better understanding of the economic effects caused by population inflows of this nature. Nonetheless, to the authors’ knowledge, there are no studies for the recent Brazilian history regarding the impacts of immigrants on the labor market outcomes, in particular, on natives’ wage and employment level. With this background in mind, the studies carried out in this thesis aim to give the first steps in the research of this subject. The present work is composed of four chapters, which examine different issues associated to the effects of immigration on Brazilian labor market.The first chapter motivates the immigration issue in Brazil and, by means of a structural methodology based on the CES production function framework, simulates the effect on the wage structure in response to immigration influxes stipulated for the year 2010, date of the last Demographic Census. In particular, we calculate a mean wage impact around −0.25% resulting from a stipulated influx of 549 thousands immigrants, same magnitude of the one observed between December 2010 and December 2011. The second chapter estimates the degree of substitution between immigrants and natives of the same skill group and tests the assumption of perfect substitution empirically supported by Borjas et al. (2012, 2008) and adopted in the previous chapter. The employed methodology is based upon the structural framework developed in Manacorda et al. (2012) and Ottaviano & Peri (2012), which adds an extra level to the nested CES production function of Borjas (2003). The estimated elasticities of substitution under several model specifications varies from 9 to 23, results that strengthen the imperfect substitution thesis preconized by Card (2012). The third chapter estimates two types of elasticities related to the impacts of immigrants on natives’ wage through an alternative methodology based on a more flexible production function that is not subject to constraints as stringent as multi-level CES is. The computed estimates for the underlying Hicks elasticities of substitution lie between 1.3 and 4.9, which reinforces the evidences of imperfect substitution obtained in Chapter 2. Moreover, the estimated gross elasticities of natives’ wages with respect to the quantities of immigrants in production are at most of the order of +−0.01. The fourth and last chapter, by means of a methodology founded on the Translog cost function framework, examines how the native’s employment level responds to changes in the cost of immigrant labor, issue that so far has been given little attention in the literature, despite its relevance to the formulation of immigration policies. To all model specifications and education groups considered, our results indicate that an exogenous variation in immigrant’s wage leads to only slightly effects on the level of employment of Brazilian native workers. In most cases, the hypothesis that native and immigrant are neither net p-complements nor net p-substitutes cannot be rejected Diante da importância que o tema da imigração adquiriu no país nos últimos anos, gerou-se uma necessidade de melhor entendimento dos efeitos econômicos causados por influxos populacionais dessa natureza. Todavia, sob o conhecimento dos autores, inexistem estudos para história recente brasileira acerca dos impactos dos imigrantes no mercado de trabalho, em especial, sobre o salário e o nível de emprego dos nativos. Com esse panorama em mente, os estudos realizados nesta tese visam dar os primeiros passos na investigação desse tema. O presente trabalho é composto por quatro capítulos, os quais examinam diferentes questões associadas aos efeitos da imigração no mercado de trabalho brasileiro. O primeiro capítulo motiva o tema da imigração no Brasil e, através de uma metodologia estrutural baseada no arcabouço da função CES multi-nível, simula o efeito na estrutura salarial em resposta a influxos imigratórios estipulados para o ano de 2010, data do último Censo Demográfico. Em particular, calcula-se que o impacto salarial médio decorrente de um influxo estipulado de 549 mil imigrantes, mesma magnitude do observado entre dezembro de 2010 e dezembro de 2011, estaria situado em torno de -0.25%. O segundo capítulo estima o grau de substituição entre imigrantes e nativos do mesmo grupo de habilidade e testa a hipótese de substituição perfeita suportada empiricamente por Borjas et al. (2012, 2008) e adotada no capítulo anterior. A metodologia empregada fundamenta-se no arcabouço estrutural desenvolvido em Manacorda et al. (2012) e Ottaviano & Peri (2012), o qual acrescenta um nível extra na função de produção CES multi-nível de Borjas (2003). As elasticidades de substituição estimadas sob diversas especificações variam entre 9 e 23, resultados que fortalecem a tese de substituição imperfeita preconizada por Card (2012). O terceiro capítulo estima dois tipos de elasticidades relacionadas ao impacto dos imigrantes sobre o rendimento do trabalho nativo através de uma metodologia alternativa baseada numa função de produção mais flexível e que não está sujeita a restrições tão austeras quanto a CES. As estimativas computadas para as elasticidades de substituição de Hicks subjacentes se situam entre 1.3 e 4.9, o que reforça as evidências de substituição imperfeita obtidas no Capítulo 2. Adicionalmente, os valores estimados para as elasticidades brutas dos salários dos nativos em relação às quantidades de imigrantes na produção são da ordem máxima de +-0.01. O quarto e último capítulo, por meio de uma metodologia fundamentada no arcabouço da função de custo Translog, examina como o nível de emprego dos nativos reage a alterações no custo do trabalho imigrante, uma questão que até o momento recebeu pouca atenção da literatura, conquanto apresente relevância para formulação de políticas imigratórias. Para todas as especificações de modelo e grupos de educação considerados, nossos resultados apontam que uma variação exógena no salário do imigrante produz apenas diminutos efeitos sobre o nível de emprego dos trabalhadores nativos brasileiros. Na maioria dos casos, não se pode rejeitar a hipótese de que nativo e imigrante não são nem p-complementares nem p-substitutos líquidos.
