Abstract

Photoexcitation at 320 nm of multilayers of Te(OH)2 thin films, deposited on interdigitating electrodes, with a laser pulse of 8 ns and with an energy between 5 and 200 microJ, was found to produce transient photocurrents. Charge carriers were formed in the bulk by a bipolar generation mechanism in both low and high field conditions. In low electric field situations, the behavior of the photocurrents were strongly affected by recombination and trapping processes. At higher electric fields, corona discharge becomes significant.

Abstract

Self-assembled monolayers of various discoid molecules containing thioether, thiol or disulfide substituents on gold were compared. Discotic liquid crystalline hexaalkylthio-substituted triphenylenes and tricycloquinazolines and derivatized triphenylenes with a single long omega-thioalkyl or omega-dithioalkyl substituent were found to self-assemble from dilute solution onto gold surfaces.

Abstract

The composition of the protein and membrane surface affects long-range interaction of proteins with ligands, while the short-range interactions are dependent on the structure of the protein and interfacial properties on the membrane. The presence of a planar bilayer is necessary for the recognition of molecular forces that are responsible for the interaction of monoclonal 4-4-20 antifluorescyl IgG Fab' fragments to fluorescein. The ability of antibodies to identify haptens on the cell surface is important for bringing about immunogenic responses.

Abstract

Chemical studies reveal that molecules containing diacetylene can yield polydiacetylene-containing self-assembled monolayers with ordered structure. The procedure involves diacetylene adsorption of gold from THF and subsequent conversion of the monomer to the polymer on exposure to UV radiation. Raman spectroscopic studies reveal that film formation occurs due to growth of islands containing locally ordered molecules.

Abstract

A study of the helical columnar phase of 2,3,6,7,10,11 hexahexylthiotriphenylene reveals that these disk-like organic molecules exhibit high motion rates for photoinduced charge carriers of the order of 0.1 cm square per Volt per second. The helical columnar phase is produced by cooling the isotropic liquid melt through the discotic liquid-crystal phase, in which the molecules are arranged with a high order. The formation of highly ordered helical phase maintains the structural symmetry of the molecules and improves their electronic properties.
