Abstract

In the present study we employ three distinct physically motivated speed of sound bounds in order to construct hybrid models where the high density phase is described by the maximally stiff equation of state. In particular, we consider the bounds related to special relativity, relativistic kinetic theory and conformality. The low density hadronic phase is described by a state-of-the-art microscopic relativistic Brueckner-Hartree-Fock theory. This work aims to access the effect of the different speed of sound constraints on the relevant parameter space of the key parameters of first-order phase transitions by utilising recent astronomical data. This involves a systematic analysis that also includes two distinct schemes for the construction of hybrid models, namely the Maxwell and Gibbs methods. Finally, a relevant discussion is conducted on the possible occurrence of a thermodynamic inconsistency that is related to the stability of the high density phase over hadronic matter at large densities., Comment: 11 pages, 8 Figures

2. Making intellectual property rights work for climate technology transfer and innovation in developing countries

Abstract

This study investigates the controversial role of Intellectual Property Rights (IPRs) in climate technology transfer and innovation in developing countries. Using a systematic literature review and expert interviews, we assess the role of IPRs on three sources of climate technology: (1) international technology transfer, (2) adaptive innovation, and (3) indigenous innovation. Our contributions are threefold. First, patents have limited impact in any of these channels, suggesting that current debates over IPRs may be directed towards the wrong targets. Second, trademarks and utility models provide incentives for climate innovation in the countries studied. Third, drawing from the results, we develop a framework to guide policy on how IPRs can work better in the broader context of climate and trade policies, outlining distinct mechanisms to support mitigation and adaptation. Our results indicate that market mechanisms, especially trade and demand-pull policies, should be prioritised for mitigation solutions. Adaptation differs, relying more on indigenous innovation due to local needs and low demand. Institutional mechanisms, such as finance and co-development, should be prioritised to build innovation capacities for adaptation.

3. Emergence of High-Order Deformation in Rotating Transfermium Nuclei: A Microscopic Understanding

Abstract

The rotational properties of the transfermium nuclei are investigated in the full deformation space by implementing a shell-model-like approach in the cranking covariant density functional theory on a three-dimensional lattice, where the pairing correlations, deformations, and moments of inertia are treated in a microscopic and self-consistent way. The kinematic and dynamic moments of inertia of the rotational bands observed in the transfermium nuclei $^{252}$No, $^{254}$No, $^{254}$Rf, and $^{256}$Rf are well reproduced without any adjustable parameters using a well-determined universal density functional. It is found for the first time that the emergence of the octupole deformation should be responsible for the significantly different rotational behavior observed in $^{252}$No and $^{254}$No. The present results provide a microscopic solution to the long-standing puzzle on the rotational behavior in No isotopes, and highlight the risk of investigating only the hexacontetrapole ($\beta_{60}$) deformation effects in rotating transfermium nuclei without considering the octupole deformation.

Abstract

Pubertal timing varies considerably and is associated with later health outcomes. We performed multi-ancestry genetic analyses on ~800,000 women, identifying 1,080 signals for age at menarche. Collectively, these explained 11% of trait variance in an independent sample. Women at the top and bottom 1% of polygenic risk exhibited ~11 and ~14-fold higher risks of delayed and precocious puberty, respectively. We identified several genes harboring rare loss-of-function variants in ~200,000 women, including variants in ZNF483, which abolished the impact of polygenic risk. Variant-to-gene mapping approaches and mouse gonadotropin-releasing hormone neuron RNA sequencing implicated 665 genes, including an uncharacterized G-protein-coupled receptor, GPR83, which amplified the signaling of MC3R, a key nutritional sensor. Shared signals with menopause timing at genes involved in DNA damage response suggest that the ovarian reserve might signal centrally to trigger puberty. We also highlight body size-dependent and independent mechanisms that potentially link reproductive timing to later life disease.

Abstract

Quantum chemical calculations of one-photon absorption, electronic circular dichroism and anisotropy factor spectra for the A-band transition of fenchone, camphor and 3-methylcyclopentanone (3MCP) are reported. While the only weakly allowed nature of the transition leads to comparatively large anisotropies, a proper theoretical description of the absorption for such a transition requires to account for non-Condon effects. We present experimental data for the anisotropy of 3MCP in the liquid phase and show that corresponding Herzberg-Teller corrections are critical to reproduce the main experimental features. The results obtained with our comprehensive theoretical model highlight the importance of the vibrational degree of freedom, paving the way for a deeper understanding of the dynamics in electronic circular dichroism.

6. The axially-deformed relativistic quasiparticle random phase approximation based on point-coupling interactions

Abstract

Collective nuclear excitations, like giant resonances, are sensitive to nuclear deformation, as evidenced by alterations in their excitation energies and transition strength distributions. A common theoretical framework to study these collective modes, the random-phase approximation (RPA), has to deal with large dimensions spanned by all possible particle-hole configurations satisfying certain symmetries. This work aims to establish a new theoretical framework to study the impact of deformation on spin-isospin excitations, that can provide fast and reliable solutions of the RPA equations. The nuclear ground state is determined with the axially-deformed relativistic Hartree-Bogoliubov (RHB) model based on relativistic point-coupling energy density functionals (EDFs). To study the excitations in the charge-exchange channel, an axially-deformed proton-neutron relativistic quasiparticle RPA (pnRQRPA) is developed in the linear response approach. After benchmarking the axially-deformed pnRQRPA in the spherical limit, a study of spin-isospin excitations including Fermi, Gamow-Teller (GT), and Spin-Dipole (SD) is performed for selected $pf$-shell nuclei. For GT transitions, it is demonstrated that deformation leads to considerable fragmentation of the strength function. A mechanism inducing the fragmentation is studied by decomposing the total strength to different projections of total angular momentum $K$ and constraining the nuclear shape to either spherical, prolate or oblate. A similar fragmentation is also observed for SD transitions, although somewhat moderated by the complex structure of these transitions, while the Fermi strength is almost shape-independent. 7. Tensor-force effects on nuclear matter in relativistic ab initio theory

Abstract

Within the relativistic Brueckner-Hartree-Fock theory in the full Dirac space, the tensor-force effects on infinite nuclear matter are elucidated by subtracting the matrix elements of tensor forces from the realistic nucleon-nucleon interaction. The tensor-force effects for the binding energy per particle of symmetric nuclear matter (SNM) as well as the symmetry energy are attractive and are more pronounced around the empirical saturation density, while the tensor forces have little impact on the pure neutron matter. By tuning the tensor-force strength, an infinite (negative) scattering length in the spin-triplet channel is found. This locates the dilute SNM with only the $^3S_1$-$^3D_1$ channel interaction at the unitary limit. Its ground-state energy is found proportional to the energy of a free Fermi gas with a scaling factor 0.38, revealing good universal properties. This work paves the way to study the tensor-force effects in neutron stars as well as finite nuclei from realistic nucleon-nucleon interactions, highlights the role of the tensor force on the deviation of the nuclear physics to the unitary limit, and provides valuable reference for studies of the four-component unitary Fermi gas., Comment: 5 pages, 2 figures, discussion on four-component unitary Fermi gas is updated, accepted by Science Bulletin

Abstract

A hallmark of unconventional superconductors is their complex electronic phase diagrams where "intertwined orders" of charge-spin-lattice degrees of freedom compete and coexist as in copper oxides and iron pnictides. While the electronic phase diagram of kagome lattice superconductor such as CsV3Sb5 also exhibits complex behavior involving coexisting and competing charge density wave order and superconductivity, much is unclear about the microscopic origin of superconductivity. Here, we study the vortex lattice (VL) in superconducting state of Cs(V0.86Ta0.14)3Sb5, where the Ta-doping suppresses charge order and enhances superconductivity. Using small-angle neutron scattering, a strictly bulk probe, we show that the VL exhibits a strikingly conventional behavior. This includes a triangular VL with a period consistent with 2e-pairing, a field dependent scattering intensity that follows a London model, and a temperature dependence consistent with a uniform superconducting gap expected for s-wave pairing. These results suggest that optimal bulk superconductivity in Cs(V1-xTax)3Sb5 arises from a conventional Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer electron-lattice coupling, different from spin fluctuation mediated unconventional copper and iron based superconductors., Comment: Multiple revisions

Abstract

In this report, we introduce the Gemini 1.5 family of models, representing the next generation of highly compute-efficient multimodal models capable of recalling and reasoning over fine-grained information from millions of tokens of context, including multiple long documents and hours of video and audio. The family includes two new models: (1) an updated Gemini 1.5 Pro, which exceeds the February version on the great majority of capabilities and benchmarks; (2) Gemini 1.5 Flash, a more lightweight variant designed for efficiency with minimal regression in quality. Gemini 1.5 models achieve near-perfect recall on long-context retrieval tasks across modalities, improve the state-of-the-art in long-document QA, long-video QA and long-context ASR, and match or surpass Gemini 1.0 Ultra's state-of-the-art performance across a broad set of benchmarks. Studying the limits of Gemini 1.5's long-context ability, we find continued improvement in next-token prediction and near-perfect retrieval (>99%) up to at least 10M tokens, a generational leap over existing models such as Claude 3.0 (200k) and GPT-4 Turbo (128k). Finally, we highlight real-world use cases, such as Gemini 1.5 collaborating with professionals on completing their tasks achieving 26 to 75% time savings across 10 different job categories, as well as surprising new capabilities of large language models at the frontier; when given a grammar manual for Kalamang, a language with fewer than 200 speakers worldwide, the model learns to translate English to Kalamang at a similar level to a person who learned from the same content.

16. Microscopic optical potential from the relativistic Brueckner-Hartree-Fock theory: Proton-nucleus scattering

Abstract

A relativistic microscopic optical model potential for nucleon-nucleus scattering is developed based on the \emph{ab initio} relativistic Brueckner-Hartree-Fock (RBHF) theory with the improved local density approximation, which is abbreviated as the RBOM potential. Both real and imaginary parts of the single-particle potentials in symmetric and asymmetric nuclear matter at various densities are determined uniquely in the full Dirac space. The density distributions of the target nuclei are calculated by the covariant energy density functional theory with the density functional PC-PK1. The central and spin-orbit terms of the optical potentials are quantitatively consistent with the relativistic phenomenological optical potentials. The performance of the RBOM potential is evaluated by considering proton scattering with incident energy $E\leq 200$ MeV on five target nuclei, $\prescript{208}{}{\text{Pb}}$, $\prescript{120}{}{\text{Sn}}$, $\prescript{90}{}{\text{Zr}}$, $\prescript{48}{}{\text{Ca}}$, and $\prescript{40}{}{\text{Ca}}$. Scattering observables including the elastic scattering angular distributions, analyzing powers, spin rotation functions, and reaction cross sections are analyzed. Theoretical predictions show good agreements with the experimental data and the results derived from phenomenological optical potentials. Abstract

Electropolishing (EP) of 1.3 GHz niobium superconducting RF cavities is conducted to achieve a desired smooth and contaminant-free surface that yields good RF performance. Achieving a smooth surface of a large-sized elliptical cavity with the standard EP conditions was found to be challenging. This work aimed to conduct a systematic parametric EP study to understand the effects of various EP parameters on the surface of 650 MHz niobium cavities used in the Proton Improvement Plan-II (PIP-II) linear accelerator. Parameters optimized in this study provided a smooth surface of the cavities. The electropolished cavity showed significantly a higher accelerating gradient meeting baseline requirement and qualified for further surface treatment to improve the cavity quality factor., Comment: SRF2023

18. Canopy cover and microtopography control precipitation-enhanced thaw of ecosystem-protected permafrost

Abstract

Northern high-latitudes are projected to get warmer and wetter, which will affect rates of permafrost thaw and mechanisms by which thaw occurs. To better understand the impact of rain, as well as other factors such as snow depth, canopy cover, and microtopography, we instrumented a degrading permafrost plateau in south-central Alaska with high-resolution soil temperature sensors. The site contains ecosystem-protected permafrost, which persists in unfavorable climates due to favorable ecologic conditions. Our study (2020-2022) captured three of the snowiest years and three of the four wettest years since the site was first studied in 2015. Average thaw rates along an across-site transect increased nine-fold from 6 ± 5 cm yr−1 (2015-2020) to 56 ± 12 cm yr−1 (2020-2022). This thaw was not uniform. Hummock locations, residing on topographic high points with relatively dense canopy, experienced only 8 ± 9 cm yr−1 of thaw, on average. Hollows, topographic low points with low canopy cover, and transition locations, which had canopy cover and elevation between hummocks and hollows, thawed 44 ± 6 cm yr−1 and 39 ± 13 cm yr−1, respectively. Mechanisms of thaw differed between these locations. Hollows had high warm-season soil moisture, which increased thermal conductivity, and deep cold-season snow coverage, which insulated soil. Transition locations thawed primarily due to thermal energy transported through subsurface taliks during individual rain events. Most increases in depth to permafrost occurred below the ∼45 cm thickness seasonally frozen layer, and therefore, expanded existing site taliks. Results highlight the importance of canopy cover and microtopography in controlling soil thermal inputs, the ability of subsurface runoff from individual rain events to trigger warming and thaw, and the acceleration of thaw caused by consecutive wet and snowy years. As northern high-latitudes become warmer and wetter, and weather events become more extreme, the importance of these controls on soil warming and thaw is likely to increase.

Abstract

This report introduces a new family of multimodal models, Gemini, that exhibit remarkable capabilities across image, audio, video, and text understanding. The Gemini family consists of Ultra, Pro, and Nano sizes, suitable for applications ranging from complex reasoning tasks to on-device memory-constrained use-cases. Evaluation on a broad range of benchmarks shows that our most-capable Gemini Ultra model advances the state of the art in 30 of 32 of these benchmarks - notably being the first model to achieve human-expert performance on the well-studied exam benchmark MMLU, and improving the state of the art in every one of the 20 multimodal benchmarks we examined. We believe that the new capabilities of the Gemini family in cross-modal reasoning and language understanding will enable a wide variety of use cases. We discuss our approach toward post-training and deploying Gemini models responsibly to users through services including Gemini, Gemini Advanced, Google AI Studio, and Cloud Vertex AI.

20. Leveraging a Campus Equity Walkthrough Evaluation (CEWE) ePortfolio to Assess First-Year Students' Equity-Minded Learning and Campus Belonging

Abstract

Scholarship demonstrates that ePortfolios enable students to collect work over time and reflect upon personal, academic, and career growth. However, a discussion on whether ePortfolios helps first-year students describe their equity-mindedness and document their campus belonging perspectives remains mostly unexplored. The purpose of this point-in-time, qualitative research study is to describe first-year students' experiences completing an on-campus physical walkthrough each spring quarter of 2017, 2018, and 2019. All first-year students were enrolled in a yearlong Freshman Inquiry course at Portland State University in Oregon. This study utilizes Saldaña's (2016) in vivo coding approach to analyze students' survey responses and summative essays. The research design begins with students answering an anonymous pre-learning survey each spring quarter, then completing an on-campus walkthrough during the same spring quarter utilizing a Campus Equity Walkthrough Evaluation (CEWE) learning ePortfolio and concludes with students writing a summative reflective essay. The study found three themes: (a) Before completing the CEWE, students defined equality and equity interchangeably with fairness; (b) while completing it, students showed surprise at the variety of on-campus student resources; and (c) after completing the CEWE, students identified inclusion and exclusion experiences on campus based on their social identities. The results suggest that the CEWE shifted first-year students' understanding of equity-mindedness in three ways: (a) First-year students identify racialized structures and practices on campus, (b) the equity-minded ePortfolio framework develops students' capacity for self-reflection, and (c) students determine that racialized structures and practices on campus impact their campus belonging.

Abstract

Pseudospin symmetry (PSS) is a relativistic dynamical symmetry connected with the lower component of the Dirac spinor. Here, we investigate the conservation and breaking of PSS in the single-nucleon resonant states, as an example, using Green's function method that provides a novel way to precisely describe not only the resonant energies and widths but also the spacial density distributions for both narrow and wide resonances. The PSS restoration and breaking are perfectly displayed in the evolution of resonant parameters and density distributions with the potential depth: In the PSS limit, i.e., when the attractive scalar and repulsive vector potentials have the same magnitude but opposite sign, PSS is exactly conserved with strictly the same energy and width between the PS partners as well as identical density distributions of the lower components. 23. Nuclear ground-state properties probed by the relativistic Hartree-Bogoliubov approach

Abstract

Using the relativistic Hartree-Bogoliubov framework with separable pairing force coupled with the latest covariant density functionals, i.e., PC-L3R, PC-X, DD-PCX, and DD-MEX, we systematically explore the ground-state properties of all isotopes of Z=8-110. These properties consist of the binding energies, one- and two-neutron separation energies ($S_\mathrm{n}$ and $S_\mathrm{2n}$), root-mean-square radius of matter, of neutron, of proton, and of charge distributions, Fermi surfaces, ground-state spins and parities. We then predict the edges of nuclear landscape and bound nuclei for the isotopic chains from oxygen (Z=8) to darmstadtium (Z=110) based on these latest covariant density functionals. The number of bound nuclei predicted by PC-L3R, PC-X, DD-PCX, and DD-MEX, are 9004, 9162, 6799, and 7112, respectively. The root-mean-square deviations of $S_\mathrm{n}$ ($S_\mathrm{2n}$) yielded from PC-L3R, PCX, DD-PCX, and DD-MEX are 0.962 (1.300) MeV, 0.920 (1.483) MeV, 0.993 (1.753) MeV, and 1.010 (1.544) MeV, respectively. The root-mean-square deviations of charge radius distributions of comparing the available experimental values with the theoretical counterparts resulted from PC-L3R, PC-X, DD-PCX, and DD-MEX are 0.035 fm, 0.037 fm, 0.035 fm, and 0.034 fm, respectively. Introduction: The emergency department commonly evaluates eye pain and vision loss. Typically, these conditions can be managed outpatient; however, delays can lead to advanced pathology.Case Report: A 48-year-old homeless male presented with left-eye vision loss and pain. His exam revealed monocular decreased visual acuity, corneal ulcer, and hypopyon. The patient was diagnosed with bacterial keratitis and admitted for treatment but left against medical advice. He returned and was admitted for further treatment but was lost to follow-up thereafter.Conclusion: Our case features complicated bacterial keratitis with several treatment interruptions, demonstrating how healthcare disparities contribute to potentially preventable advanced pathology.

Abstract

Abstract Varicella-zoster virus (VZV) is the etiological agent of chickenpox and shingles, diseases characterised by epidermal virus replication in skin and mucosa and the formation of blisters. We have previously shown that VZV infection has a profound effect on keratinocyte differentiation, altering the normal pattern of epidermal gene expression. In particular, VZV infection reduces expression of suprabasal keratins 1 and 10 and desmosomal proteins, disrupting epidermal structure to promote expression of a blistering phenotype. Here, we extend these findings to show that VZV infection upregulates the expression of keratin 15 (KRT15), a marker expressed by basal epidermal keratinocytes and hair follicles stem cells. We demonstrate that KRT15 is essential for VZV replication in the skin, since downregulation of KRT15 inhibits VZV replication in keratinocytes, while KRT15 exogenous overexpression supports viral replication. Importantly, our data show that VZV upregulation of KRT15 depends on the expression of the VZV immediate early gene ORF62. ORF62 is the only regulatory gene that is mutated in the live attenuated VZV vaccine and contains four of the five fixed mutations present in the VZV Oka vaccine. Our data indicate that the mutated vaccine ORF62 is not capable of upregulating KRT15, suggesting that this may contribute to the vaccine attenuation in skin. Taken together our data present a novel association between VZV and KRT15, which may open a new therapeutic window for a topical targeting of VZV replication in the skin via modulation of KRT15.

28. Supporting Preservice Economics Teachers in Creating High-Quality Instructional Videos

Abstract

Instructional videos are a popular teaching and learning tool. Teachers use already existing videos and develop their own videos, in which they explain important domain concepts. The effectiveness of these videos depends on their instructional quality. To support future teachers in creating high-quality videos, we developed a training and compared the instructional quality of videos developed by pre-service economics teachers ("N" = 24) before and after the training period. The quality is assessed based on a theoretically funded framework. We identify small improvements regarding the overall instructional quality and provide an overview of the most common changes made by the preservice teachers. Overall, the study contributes to a better understanding of how future teachers can be supported in creating high-quality digital media.

29. Examining a Model of Anxiety in Autistic Adults

Abstract

Anxiety disorders commonly occur in autism. Existing studies implicate intolerance of uncertainty, alexithymia, sensory processing differences and emotion regulation difficulties as influencing factors of anxiety in autism. To date, a few studies have considered the combination of these factors within the same sample. This study used structural equation modelling to test the prediction that intolerance of uncertainty and emotion regulation constitute more direct causes of anxiety in autism that mediate the influences of sensory processing difference and alexithymia as more sequential contributing factors. Autistic (n = 86) and non-autistic adults (n = 100) completed a battery of self-report questionnaires. Only when applied to each group separately, the broad predictions of the model were confirmed for the autistic group following data-driven additions of paths between sensory processing difference and anxiety and alexithymia implying that sensory processing difference contribute indirectly as well as directly to individual differences in anxiety. For the non-autistic group, model fit could only be achieved after removing autism-related traits and sensory processing differences as predictors of anxiety. These results suggest that aetiology and expression of anxiety in autism partially overlap with what is observed in the general population except that sensory processing differences appear to play a relatively unique role in the context of autism.

This study aimed to better understand how autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and developmental coordination disorder (DCD) differ in types of praxis errors made on the Florida Apraxia Battery Modified (FAB-M) and the potential relationships between praxis errors and social deficits in ASD. The ASD group made significantly more timing sequencing errors in imitation of meaningful gestures, as well as more body-part-for-tool errors during gesture-to-command compared to the other two groups. In the ASD group, increased temporal errors in meaningful imitation were significantly correlated with poorer affect recognition and less repetitive behaviors. Thus, in ASD, aspects of imitation ability are related to socioemotional skills and repetitive behaviors.

Abstract

StarCraft II is one of the most challenging simulated reinforcement learning environments; it is partially observable, stochastic, multi-agent, and mastering StarCraft II requires strategic planning over long time horizons with real-time low-level execution. It also has an active professional competitive scene. StarCraft II is uniquely suited for advancing offline RL algorithms, both because of its challenging nature and because Blizzard has released a massive dataset of millions of StarCraft II games played by human players. This paper leverages that and establishes a benchmark, called AlphaStar Unplugged, introducing unprecedented challenges for offline reinforcement learning. We define a dataset (a subset of Blizzard's release), tools standardizing an API for machine learning methods, and an evaluation protocol. We also present baseline agents, including behavior cloning, offline variants of actor-critic and MuZero. Abstract

We extend the multi-reference covariant density functional theory (MR-CDFT) by including fluctuations in quadrupole deformations and average isovector pairing gaps simultaneously for the nuclear matrix elements (NMEs) of neutrinoless double-beta $(0\nu\beta\beta)$ decay in the candidate nuclei $^{76}$Ge, $^{82}$Se, $^{100}$Mo, $^{130}$Te, and $^{136}$Xe assuming the exchange of either light or heavy neutrinos. The results indicate a linear correlation between the predicted NMEs and the isovector pairing strengths, as well as the excitation energies of $2^{+}_1$ and $4^{+}_1$ states. By adjusting the pairing strengths based on the excitation energies of the $2^{+}_1$ states, we calculate the NMEs for $0\nu\beta\beta$ decay, which are reduced by approximately $12\%$ to $62\%$ compared to the results obtained in the previous studies by Song et al. [Phys. Rev. C95, 024305 (2017)]. Additionally, upon introducing the average isovector pairing gap as an additional generator coordinate in the calculation, the NMEs increase by a factor ranging from $56\%$ to $218\%$., Comment: 11 pages with 4 tables and 8 figures

Abstract

Nucleon effective masses in neutron-rich matter are studied with the relativistic Brueckner-Hartree-Fock (RBHF) theory in the full Dirac space. The neutron and proton effective masses for symmetric nuclear matter are 0.80 times rest mass, which agrees well with the empirical values. In neutron-rich matter, the effective mass of the neutron is found larger than that of the proton, and the neutron-proton effective mass splittings at the empirical saturation density are predicted as $0.187\alpha$ with $\alpha$ being the isospin asymmetry parameter. The result is compared to other ab initio calculations and is consistent with the constraints from the nuclear reaction and structure measurements, such as the nucleon-nucleus scattering, the giant resonances of $^{208}$Pb, and the Hugenholtz-Van Hove theorem with systematics of nuclear symmetry energy and its slope. Abstract

We present a microscopic model, describing current-driven switching in metallic atomic-size contacts. Applying a high current through an atomic-size contact, creates a strong electronic nonequilibrium that excites vibrational modes by virtue of the electron-vibration coupling. Using density functional theory (DFT) in combination with the Landauer-B\"uttiker theory for phase-coherent transport, expressed in terms of nonequilibrium Green's functions (NEGFs), we study the current-induced forces arising from this nonequilibrium and determine those vibrational modes which couple most strongly to the electronic system. For single-atom lead (Pb) contacts we show specific candidates for bistable switches, consisting of two similar atomic configurations with differing electric conductance. We identify vibrational modes that induce a transition between these configurations. Our results reveal a possible origin of bistable switching in atomic-size contacts through excitation of vibrations by inelastic electron scattering and underline the power of the combined DFT-NEGF approach and statistical mechanics analysis of a Langevin equation to overcome the time-scale gap between atomic motion and rare switching events, allowing for an efficient exploration of the contacts' configurational phase space.
