Its inclusion in nanoemulsions (NEs) is a promising alternative to increase its bioavailability. The aim of this study was to compare O/W NEs including VitE based on Almond or Neem oil, showing themselves antioxidant properties. The potential synergy of the antioxidant activities of oils and vitamin E, co-formulated in NEs, was explored.Patients and Methods: NEs have been prepared by sonication and deeply characterized evaluating size, ζ-potential, morphology (TEM and SAXS analyses), oil nanodroplet feature, and stability. Antioxidant activity has been evaluated in vitro, in non-tumorigenic HaCaT keratinocytes, and in vivo through fluorescence analysis of C. elegans transgenic strain. Moreover, on healthy human volunteers, skin tolerability and anti-inflammatory activity were evaluated by measuring the reduction of the skin erythema induced by the application of a skin chemical irritant (methyl-nicotinate).Results: Results confirm that Vitamin E can be formulated in highly stable NEs showing good antioxidant activity on keratinocyte and on C. elegans. ECM is considered the main player not only as physical support of the tegument but also at the biochemical level, thanks to its capacity to exchange nutrients, water, cellular mediators, and growth factors within and between cells. This study aimed to evaluate the in vitro and in vivo efficacy and aesthetic performance of a brand-new intracutaneous filler. The latter is based on novel concepts: besides filling it exerts a homeostatic balance of nutrients able to delay the skin aging process by sustaining physiological rejuvenation of the tissue and in the surrounding injection/implantation area. The brand-new intracutaneous filler was tested for in vitro capacity to stimulate extracellular matrix components production. Therefore, a single session for injection of the product under study was performed by a specialized dermatologist, using the bolus technique on the zygomatic protuberance of 20 healthy female subjects with midface volume loss, caused by aging. Results confirmed the important and long-term volumizing, anti-wrinkle, the hydrating activity of this product after one single injection session. Concerns were raised regarding the alleged duplication of TEM images in Figure 1. Specifically, Figure 1A, F1, appears to have been duplicated with the same image for Figure 1C, F3 and Figure 1D, F3AG. The authors did respond to our queries but were unable to explain how the duplication of images occurred, nor were they able to provide the original TEM images from the reported study. The decision was made to retract the article and the authors were notified of this. Our decision-making was informed by our policy on publishing ethics and integrity and the COPE guidelines on retraction. The retracted article will remain online to maintain the scholarly record, but it will be digitally watermarked on each page as “Retracted”.

Abstract

We study the Birman-Schwinger operator for a self-adjoint realisation of the one-dimensional Hamiltonian with the Coulomb potential. We study both the case in which this Hamiltonian is defined on the whole real line and when it is only defined on the positive semiaxis. In both cases, the Birman-Schwinger operator is Hilbert-Schmidt, even though it is not trace class. Then, we have considered some approximations to the Hamiltonian depending on a positive parameter, under given conditions, and proved the convergence of the Birman-Schwinger operators of these approximations to the original Hamiltonian as the parameter goes to zero. 5. Revisiting Theoretical Guarantees of Direct-Search Methods

Abstract

Optimizing a function without using derivatives is a challenging paradigm, that precludes from using classical algorithms from nonlinear optimization and may thus seem intractable other than by using heuristics. However, the field of derivative-free optimization has succeeded in producing algorithms that do not rely on derivatives and yet are endowed with convergence guarantees. One class of such methods, called direct search, is particularly popular thanks to its simplicity of implementation, even though its theoretical underpinnings are not always easy to grasp. In this work, we survey contemporary direct-search algorithms from a theoretical viewpoint, with the aim of highlighting the key theoretical features of these methods. Our study goes beyond the classical, textbook cases and tackles the presence of nonsmoothness, noise, and constraints in the problem at hand. In addition to reviewing classical results in the field, we provide new perspectives on existing results, as well as novel proofs that illustrate the versatility of direct-search schemes.

6. Outlook of the European forest-based sector: forest growth, harvest demand, wood-product markets, and forest carbon dynamics implications

Abstract

A comprehensive assessment of European forest-based biomass harvest potentials, their future utilization and implications on international wood product markets and forest carbon dynamics requires the capability to model forest resource development as well as global markets for wood-based commodities with sufficient geographical and product detail and, most importantly, their interactions. To this aim, we apply a model framework fully integrating a European forest resource model and a global economic forest sector model. In a business-as-usual (BaU) scenario, European Union harvests increase seven percent by 2030 compared to past levels (485 million m3 on 2000-2012 average and 517 million m3 in 2030). The subsequent annual carbon stock change is a ten percent reduction by 2030 compared to 2000-2012 average (equal to 119.3 Tg C yr-1), corresponding to decreasing carbon-dioxide removal by the European forests. A second, high mobilization scenario (HM), characterized by the full utilization of the potential wood supply and a doubling of EU wood pellets consumption, was designed to explore potential impacts on forest carbon dynamics and international wood product markets under intensive exploitation of biomass resources. In the HM scenario, harvest increases by 55% (754 million m3 in 2030) compared to the BaU scenario. Fuelwood accounts for this increase in harvest levels as overall competition effects from increased wood pellets consumption outweighs synergies for material uses of wood, resulting in slightly reduced harvests of industrial roundwood. As expected, this increasing harvest level would significantly impair carbon-dioxide forest sequestration from the atmosphere in the medium term (-83% in 2030, compared to 2000-2012 average).

For this reason, drug delivery to the brain is much more difficult than that to other compartments of the body. In order to bypass or cross the BBB, many strategies have been developed: invasive techniques, such as temporary disruption of the BBB or direct intraventricular and intracerebral administration of the drug, as well as noninvasive techniques. Preliminary results, reported in the large number of studies on the potential strategies for brain delivery, are encouraging, but it is far too early to draw any conclusion about the actual use of these therapeutic approaches. Among the most recent, but still pioneering, approaches related to the nasal mucosa properties, the permeabilization of the BBB via nasal mucosal engrafting can offer new potential opportunities. It should be emphasized that this surgical procedure is quite invasive, but the implication for patient outcome needs to be compared to the gold standard of direct intracranial injection, and evaluated whilst keeping in mind that central nervous system diseases and lysosomal storage diseases are chronic and severely debilitating and that up to now no therapy seems to be completely successful. 8. Integrating forest-based industry and forest resource modeling

Abstract

This paper introduces a modeling approach for the assessment of policy options within the forest-based bioeconomy. The feedback between the forestry dynamics model and the economic model of the global forest-based sector of the proposed framework is essential, not only for response analysis as to the development of forest resources and for a correct assessment of future harvesting potentials, but also for the assessment of the impact of different management regimes on wood-based product markets. Test runs of the modeling framework on a Swedish case highlight the necessity of considering timber assortments for a comprehensive integration of forest resources and wood-based commodity market dynamics. Hence, the composition of harvest demand in terms of timber assortment affects the allocation of harvesting activities and, consequently, the development of forest resources (and thus future harvest potentials), as well as the production, trade and consumption of wood-based products.

In this work, nonionic surfactant vesicles (niosomes, NSVs) containing polysorbate 20 (Tween 20), cholesterol, and cholesteryl hemisuccinate at different molar concentrations were used to prepare monoammonium glycyrrhizinate (AG)-loaded NSVs. The anti-inflammatory properties of AG-loaded NSVs were investigated in murine models.Methods: The physicochemical properties of the NSVs were characterized using dynamic light scattering. The fluidity of the lipid bilayer was evaluated by measuring the fluorescence intensity of diphenylhexatriene. The drug entrapment efficiency of AG was assessed using high-performance liquid chromatography. The physicochemical stability of the NSVs was evaluated as a function of time using dynamic light scattering combined with Turbiscan Lab® Expert analysis. Serum stability was determined by incubating the NSVs with 10% v/v fetal bovine serum. The cytotoxic effects of the NSVs were investigated in human dermal fibroblasts using the Trypan blue dye exclusion assay (for cell mortality) and an MTT assay (for cell viability). Release profiles for the AG-loaded NSVs were studied in vitro using cellulose membranes. NSVs showing the most desirable physicochemical properties were selected to test for in vivo anti-inflammatory activity in murine models. The anti-inflammatory activity of the NSVs was investigated by measuring edema and nociception in mice stimulated with chemical agents.Results: NSVs showed favorable physicochemical properties for in vitro and in vivo administration. In addition, they demonstrated long-term stability based on Turbiscan Lab Expert analysis. The membrane fluidity of the NSVs was not affected by self-assembling of the surfactants into colloidal structures. Fluorescence anisotropy was found to be independent of the molar ratios of cholesteryl hemisuccinate and/or cholesterol during preparation of the NSVs. The anti-inflammatory AG drug showed no effect on the stability of the NSVs. In vivo experiments demonstrated that AG-loaded NSVs decreased edema and nociceptive responses when compared with AG alone and empty NSVs. In vitro and in vivo results demonstrated that pH sensitive and neutral NSVs show no statistical significant difference.Conclusion: NSVs were nontoxic and showed features favorable for potential administration in vivo. 13. Opportunistic Federation of CubeSat Constellations: a Game-Changing Paradigm Enabling Enhanced IoT Services in the Sky

Abstract

Internet of Space Things (IoST) is a challenging paradigm, which is currently attracting great interest from the scientific and industrial communities. IoST is based on the integration of the space segment into the global Internet of Things (IoT) infrastructure. In the relevant literature, reference is generally made to multiple constellations of nanosatellite platforms, used to enable IoT services on a global scale, including also disadvantaged and poorly infrastructured areas. In this paper, we focus on multi-tenant IoT scenarios, wherein multiple CubeSats constellations are enabled to offer services by exploiting a dynamic federation model. The objective is to efficiently provide services in an IoST scenario by leveraging an effective cooperation strategy originally designed for terrestrial IoT networks, the Mobile-IoT-Federation-as-a-Service (MIFaaS) paradigm. We extend this vision to IoT satellite networks in order to allow a constellation of satellites to effectively execute tasks through a tight cooperative behaviour with other CubeSats constellations. The reported performance evaluation studies show that better performance, in terms of percentage of tasks successfully completed, can be achieved through the implementation of the proposed cooperation paradigm.

15. A Unifying Framework for Sparsity Constrained Optimization

Abstract

In this paper, we consider the optimization problem of minimizing a continuously differentiable function subject to both convex constraints and sparsity constraints. By exploiting a mixed-integer reformulation from the literature, we define a necessary optimality condition based on a tailored neighborhood that allows to take into account potential changes of the support set. We then propose an algorithmic framework to tackle the considered class of problems and prove its convergence to points satisfying the newly introduced concept of stationarity. We further show that, by suitably choosing the neighborhood, other well-known optimality conditions from the literature can be recovered at the limit points of the sequence produced by the algorithm. Finally, we analyze the computational impact of the neighborhood size within our framework and in the comparison with some state-of-the-art algorithms, namely, the Penalty Decomposition method and the Greedy Sparse-Simplex method. The algorithms have been tested using a benchmark related to sparse logistic regression problems.

16. The Schr\'odinger particle on the half-line with an attractive $\delta$-interaction: bound states and resonances

In this paper we provide a detailed description of the eigenvalue $ E_{D}(x_0)\leq 0$ (respectively $ E_{N}(x_0)\leq 0$) of the self-adjoint Hamiltonian operator representing the negative Laplacian on the positive half-line with a Dirichlet (resp. Neuman) boundary condition at the origin perturbed by an attractive Dirac distribution $-\lambda \delta(x-x_0)$ for any fixed value of the magnitude of the coupling constant. We also investigate the $\lambda$-dependence of both eigenvalues for any fixed value of $x_0$. Furthermore, we show that both systems exhibit resonances as poles of the analytic continuation of the resolvent. 18. Zero Order Stochastic Weakly Convex Composite Optimization

In this paper we consider stochastic weakly convex composite problems, however without the existence of a stochastic subgradient oracle. We present a derivative free algorithm that uses a two point approximation for computing a gradient estimate of the smoothed function. We prove convergence at a similar rate as state of the art methods, however with a larger constant, and report some numerical results showing the effectiveness of the approach.

19. The 3D perturbed Schr\'odinger Hamiltonian in a Friedmann flat spacetime testing the primordial universe in a non commutative spacetime

Abstract

In this paper we adapt the mathematical machinery presented in \cite{P1} to get, by means of the Laplace-Beltrami operator, the discrete spectrum of the Hamiltonian of the Schr\"{o}dinger operator perturbed by an actractive 3D delta interaction in a Friedmann flat universe. In particular, as a consequence of the treatment in \cite{P1} suitable for a Minkowski spacetime, the discrete spectrum of the ground state and the first exited state in the above mentioned cosmic framework can be regained. Thus, the coupling constant $\lambda$ must be choosen as a function of the cosmic comooving time $t$ as ${\lambda}/a^{2}(t)$, with ${\lambda}$ be the one of the static Hamiltonian studied in \cite{P1}. In this way we can introduce a time dependent delta interaction which is relevant in a primordial universe, where $a(t)\rightarrow 0$ and becomes negligible at late times, with $a(t)>>1$. We investigate, with the so obtained model, quantum effects provided by point interactions in a strong gravitational regime near the big bang. In particular, as a physically interesting application, we present a method to depict, in a semi-classical approximation, a test particle in a (non commutative) quantum spacetime where, thanks to Planckian effects, the initial classical singularity disappears and as a consequnce a ground state with negative energy emerges. 21. The spectrum of the Schr\'{o}dinger Hamiltonian for trapped particles in a cylinder with a topological defect perturbed by two attractive delta interactions

Abstract

In this paper we exploit the technique used in \cite{A}-\cite{5b} to deal with delta interactions in a rigorous way in a curved spacetime represented by a cosmic string along the $z$ axis. This mathematical machinery is applied in order to study the discrete spectrum of a point-mass particle confined in an infinitely long cylinder with a conical defect on the $z$ axis and perturbed by two identical attractive delta interactions symmetrically situated around the origin. We derive a suitable approximate formula for the total energy. As a consequence, we found the existence of a mixing of states with positive or zero energy with the ones with negative energy (bound states). This mixture depends on the radius $R$ of the trapping cylinder. The number of quantum bound states is an increasing function of the radius $R$. It is also interesting to note the presence of states with zero total energy (quasi free states). Apart from the gravitational background, the model presented in this paper is of interest in the context of nanophysics and graphene modeling. In particular, the graphene with double layer in this framework, with the double layer given by the aforementioned delta interactions and the string on the $z-$axis modeling topological defects connecting the two layers. 30. Relationship between interleukin 1 (IL-1) genetic polymorphism and periimplantitis: systematic literature review and meta-analysis.

Abstract

OBJECTIVE: Periimplantitis (PI) is a complex multifactorial chronic disease caused by interactions between bacteria, host immune-inflammatory responses, and genetic or environmental factors that modify buccal eutrophism. In daily clinical practice, an increase in the prevalence of PI (8%) determined the need to establish the PI causes and set optimal therapeutic strategies. The interleukin family (IL-1), a group of cytokines, triggers and perpetuates peri-implantitis. Therefore, they could be used as biomarkers for diagnosis and treatment. This systematic review aimed to analyze the correlation between IL-1 allelic polymorphism (IL-1A -889, IL-1ß -511, IL-1ß +3954) and the PI disease. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Selected databases were PubMed, Scopus, and Cochrane Library. The search strategy included the following terms: "dental implants"; "periimplantitis"; "interleukin-IL-1"; "polymorphism"; "perimplant bone loss". Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines were followed. A meta-analysis was conducted on five of 40 review articles. p-values, confidence intervals (CI), and Odds ratios (OR) were assessed. In 4 articles, the p-value was lower than 0.05, confirming the statistical significance of the result. RESULTS: The prevalence of the selected studies reported the existence of a causal association between polymorphisms of IL-1 and the onset of peri-implantitis, especially for IL-1 allelic variants associated with further polymorphic genes encoding for IL-6, tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-a), matrix metalloproteinases (MMP)-8, IL-1Na, IL-8, IL-18, osteopontin (OPN). In addition, the presence of the IL-1 polymorphism and PI is particularly higher in smokers, diabetes, and autoimmune disease patients. CONCLUSIONS: The detection of salivary biomarkers is, therefore, a diagnostic tool with a high potential to intercept the PI early and act with appropriate and non-invasive treatment. Due to the continued technological innovation in biomarkers and diagnostic sciences, further studies are needed to investigate the role of these biochemical mediators. The results of studies and the recent technological innovation in biomarkers and diagnostic sciences will allow further research to investigate the role of these biochemical mediators. Abstract

Using tail bounds, we introduce a new probabilistic condition for function estimation in stochastic derivative-free optimization (SDFO) which leads to a reduction in the number of samples and eases algorithmic analyses. Moreover, we develop simple stochastic direct-search and trust-region methods for the optimization of a potentially nonsmooth function whose values can only be estimated via stochastic observations. For trial points to be accepted, these algorithms require the estimated function values to yield a sufficient decrease measured in terms of a power larger than 1 of the algoritmic stepsize. Our new tail bound condition is precisely imposed on the reduction estimate used to achieve such a sufficient decrease. This condition allows us to select the stepsize power used for sufficient decrease in such a way that the number of samples needed per iteration is reduced. In previous works, the number of samples necessary for global convergence at every iteration k of this type of algorithm was O(\Delta 4 k), where Delta k is the stepsize or trust-region radius. However, using the new tail bound condition, and under mild assumptions on the noise, one can prove that such a number of samples is only O(\Delta 2 varepsilon k ), where varepsilon > 0 can be made arbitrarily small by selecting the power of the stepsize in the sufficient decrease test arbitrarily close to 1. In the common random number generator setting, a further improvement by a factor of Delta 2 k can be obtained. Abstract

The objective of the present paper is the study of a one-dimensional Hamiltonian with the interaction term given by the sum of two nonlocal attractive δ ′ -interactions of equal strength and symmetrically located with respect to the origin. We use the procedure known as renormalisation of the coupling constant in order to rigorously achieve a self-adjoint determination for this Hamiltonian. This model depends on two parameters, the interaction strength and the distance between the centre of each interaction and the origin. Once we have the self-adjoint determination, we obtain its discrete spectrum showing that it consists of two negative eigenvalues representing the energy levels. We analyse the dependence of these energy levels on the above-mentioned parameters. We investigate the possible resonances of the model. Furthermore, we analyse in detail the limit of our model as the distance between the supports of the two δ ′ interactions vanishes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Purpose: The service configuration with distinct child and adolescent mental health services (CAMHS) and adult mental health services (AMHS) may be a barrier to continuity of care. Because of a lack of transition policy, CAMHS clinicians have to decide whether and when a young person should transition to AMHS. This study describes which characteristics are associated with the clinicians’ advice to continue treatment at AMHS. Methods: Demographic, family, clinical, treatment, and service-use characteristics of the MILESTONE cohort of 763 young people from 39 CAMHS in Europe were assessed using multi-informant and standardized assessment tools. Logistic mixed models were fitted to assess the relationship between these characteristics and clinicians’ transition recommendations. Results: Young people with higher clinician-rated severity of psychopathology scores, with self- and parent-reported need for ongoing treatment, with lower everyday functional skills and without self-reported psychotic experiences were more likely to be recommended to continue treatment. Among those who had been recommended to continue treatment, young people who used psychotropic medication, who had been in CAMHS for more than a year, and for whom appropriate AMHS were available were more likely to be recommended to continue treatment at AMHS. Young people whose parents indicated a need for ongoing treatment were more likely to be recommended to stay in CAMHS. Conclusion: Although the decision regarding continuity of treatment was mostly determined by a small set of clinical characteristics, the recommendation to continue treatment at AMHS was mostly affected by service-use related characteristics, such as the availability of appropriate services.

Abstract

Background and purpose: Clinical outcomes of multiple sclerosis (MS) patients affected by coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) have been thoroughly investigated, but a further analysis on main signs and symptoms and their risk factors still needs attention. The objective of this study was to group together and describe based on similarity the most common signs and symptoms of COVID-19 in MS patients and identify all factors associated with their manifestation. Method: Logistic and linear regression models were run to recognize factors associated with each pooled group of symptoms and their total number. Results: From March 2020 to November 2021, data were collected from 1354 MS patients with confirmed infection of COVID-19. Ageusia and anosmia was less frequent in older people (odds ratio [OR] 0.98; p=0.005) and more in smoker patients (OR 1.39; p=0.049). Smoke was also associated with an incremental number of symptoms (OR 1.24; p=0.031), substance abuse (drugs or alcohol), conjunctivitis and rash (OR 5.20; p=0.042) and the presence of at least one comorbidity with shortness of breath, tachycardia or chest pain (OR 1.24; p=0.008). Some disease-modifying therapies were associated with greater frequencies of certain COVID-19 symptoms (association between anti-CD20 therapies and increment in the number of concomitant symptoms: OR 1.29; p=0.05). Differences in frequencies between the three waves were found for flu-like symptoms (G1, p=0.024), joint or muscle pain (G2, p=0.013) and ageusia and anosmia (G5, p < 0.001). All cases should be referred to variants up to Delta. Conclusion: Several factors along with the choice of specific therapeutic approaches might have a different impact on the occurrence of some COVID-19 symptoms.
