15. Biological clocks, biographical schedules and generational cycles: temporality in the ethics of assisted reproduction

Abstract

In this paper we aim to contribute to a more articulate, reflective and systematic understanding of the ethical significance of time and human temporality in the context of assisted reproductive technologies (ARTs). We first highlight the central role of time and temporality in the practices and regulatory frameworks of reproduction and ART. We then outline different levels of moral relevance of time and temporality in this context and examine their social origin and normative dimension, focusing on conceptions of reproductive, biographical and generational time. We draw conclusions for the debate on ART as well as for the conceptual framework of bioethical reasoning in general.

Abstract

The controversy between the Ultra-Orthodox Halakhic decisors Moshe Feinstein (USA) and Eliezer Waldenberg (Israel) is still authoritative for the current debate about abortion in Jewish medical ethics. There are two major ways of explaining the differences: one rather referring to the Halakhic argumentation, the other to the social background of the decisors. This study combines these two approaches to develop a more balanced interpretation: First, the pro-life and pro-choice stances in the general public are described with reference to socio-empirical research. The results of this research hint at the influence of two perspectives, one focusing on the fetus, and the other rather on the woman. The analysis then concentrates on the Halakhic controversy to describe similar differences in this field. Finally, the decisors' different situations in both states receive closer inspection. This sheds light on how their social situatedness could have affected their decisions. This interdisciplinary approach eventually contributes to a better understanding of both Jewish theology and social research. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Bringing together scholars from philosophy, bioethics, law, sociology, and anthropology, this topical collection explores how innovations in the field of biomedicine and the life sciences are challenging and transforming traditional understandings of human temporality and of the temporal duration, extension and structure of human life. The contributions aim to expand the theoretical debate by highlighting the significance of time and human temporality in different discourses and practical contexts, and developing concrete, empirically informed, and culturally sensitive perspectives. The collection is structured around three main foci: the beginning of life, the middle of life, and later life. This structure facilitates an in-depth examination of specific technological and biographical contexts and at the same time allows an overarching comparison of relevant similarities and differences between life phases and fields of application., (© 2023.
