Thermal comfort in office buildings is instrumental in improving the productivity of employees while maintaining their health. The primary objectives of this research were to analyze the comfort temperature in Japanese office buildings and investigate its relationship with outdoor air temperature. Additionally, we examined the differences in comfort temperatures with respect to closed and opened windows to factor in the increase in the opening of windows during the COVID-19 pandemic when air-conditioning systems were operated. We investigated the environmental conditions of office buildings and the thermal comfort of the occupants through monthly visits to each office building over a year. Field data were collected from four office buildings located in Nagasaki City, with 1047 votes obtained from 143 participants. The survey indicated that the occupants were highly satisfied with the thermal environment in their offices. The correlation between indoor comfort temperature and outdoor temperature was high in the FR mode. Based on the analysis, we developed an adaptive model for office buildings in Nagasaki City and compared it with existing adaptive models used for buildings in other regions of Japan. The proposed model is useful for energy-saving designs that bring out human adaptive capacity.

The Carbon Neutral Declaration has been issued in Japan and various initiatives are introducing to realise it, but in the housing sector it is essential to improve the energy efficiency of the stock of over 50 million homes. However, the progress of insulation retrofitting is slow. In particular, there are many challenges in implementing insulation retrofitting in condominiums, including the requirements of residents consent. This study aims to clarify that thermal environment data and the Comprehensive Assessment System for Built Environment Efficiency (CASBEE) health checklist for motivating thermal insulation retrofitting and to support the effectiveness of this approach. The thermal environment data compares energy consumption and room temperature before and after the retrofit and quantifies the effect of the retrofit. The CASBEE health checklist displays health characteristics and health rankings for each room and health factor by answering 50 questions about the indoor environment in winter. These are considered to visualise the effects of the renovation of respondents' homes and enable them to realise the need for renovation. This method was applied to Ta housing complex in Kanagawa prefecture and X housing complex in Tokyo, where insulation retrofitting had already been carried out, and an attempt was made to verify the effectiveness of the method by comparing the environmental improvements resulting from insulation retrofitting and the differences in residents' responses. The results of the Ta complex showed that the room temperature was 20°C in the living room and 18°C or higher in the entrance hall, indicating that good environment had been achieved; the CASBEE health checklist also showed an improvement in health characteristics and health ranking in both the Ta and X complexes. The results suggest that the effects of retrofitting in terms of both physical and psychological health are significant. In the future, the results will be presented to the management associations of non-retrofitted dwellings and, in combination with experience sessions in retrofitted dwellings, will be verified as an effective motivational tool.

This study focuses on the behavioural aspects of the occupants in Japanese office buildings. The behavioural adaptations such as window opening, heating/cooling use, clothing adjustments are important contributor factors for the adaptive thermal comfort. Therefore, understanding the behavioural aspects of the office workers can lead to have the guidelines to explain the mechanism of the adaptive model. The main aim of this study is to identify the differences in behavioural adaptation of the occupants in Japanese office buildings. Environmental parameters such as air temperature, relative humidity, and so on were measured in five mixed-mode office buildings located in Aichi prefecture were analysed for 15 months’ survey with 35 occupants. Thermal comfort survey together with the occupants’ behavioural survey were conducted in these office buildings. An adaptive relationship can be derived to estimate the indoor comfort temperature estimated by Griffiths method from the prevailing outdoor temperature. The results suggest that the proportion of heating and cooling use is related to the outdoor air temperature. The proportion of clothing adjustment is different for the different modes and are correlated to the outdoor air temperature. The acknowledge of the adaptive thermal comfort and the occupant behaviour of the selected buildings will be fruitful in designing the building with maximum thermal comfort in the future.

In the context of climate change and global warming, the nexus between energy and buildings is self-explanatory. As per the ministry of statistics and program implementation, Govt. of India data, the primary energy consumption in the building sector is 37% of total primary energy consumption and about 24% to total CO2 emissions. It is evident from the research that thermal comfort, energy efficiency in buildings and sustainable architecture are interlinked and interdependent. The present study is carried out in the Naturally ventilated offices of North-East India at three representative locations i.e., Tezpur, Imphal and Shillong, from warm and humid, Cool and humid and Cold and cloudy climates, respectively. Year-long thermal comfort surveys were carried out in 81 naturally ventilated office buildings, collecting 2326 samples spread over three locations from July 2016 to June 2017. Data analysis shows that neutral temperature through regression analysis is 26.4°C, 24.7°C, and 23.4°C for Tezpur, Imphal and Shillong, respectively. Preferred temperature and relative humidity in Tezpur, Imphal and Shillong offices are 24°C, 23.5 °C and 22 °C and 55%, 55% and 63%, respectively. Probit analysis showed that occupants are more adaptive toward the warmer side of the thermal sensation scale.

Apart from indoor environmental and personal factors, contextual factors have significantly influenced several thermal comfort studies. In air-conditioned spaces, thermal comfort is conveniently attainable by adjusting the temperature settings, but indoor design elements might alter thermal perceptions and provide adaptive opportunities. This study examines the influence of office design characteristics and anthropometrics on thermal comfort parameters and perceptions. Nineteen university offices in Kuala Lumpur and Shah Alam, comprised of twelve shared and seven private spaces, were investigated, and 628 responses were collected from 42 participants with even gender distributions. The results showed that room occupancy and size were statistically significant with Griffiths’ comfort temperature. Offices with five or more people had lower mean comfort temperature (24.1 ℃) than private offices (25.0 ℃). The mean comfort temperature in offices larger than 80 m2 was 23.7 ℃ with warmer thermal preference, while offices smaller than 40 m2 were approximately one-degree Celsius higher. Offices with no shading device, window blinds opened, and tiled floorings had mean comfort temperatures higher than 25.0 ℃. The findings also indicated that offices with more than a 60% glazing ratio have a slightly higher mean comfort temperature at 24.9 ℃. The thermal sensation during closed blinds was much cooler than opened ones. The anthropometry of the human body impacts how heat is regulated; thus, respondents with higher Body Mass Index (BMI) and above-average body surface area (higher than 1.7 m2) had significantly lower comfort temperatures and preferred more humid surroundings. Mean comfort temperature was statistically significant with BMI with a noticeable difference between underweight (25.1 ℃), normal (24.5 ℃), and obese (23.9 ℃) BMIs. In this study, it is recommended that BMI be considered when positioning occupants in shared offices, and window blinds are an integral shading device for adjusting indoor thermal comfort levels.

The purpose of this study is to investigate the potential mitigation strategies to overcome the overheating issue at the attic of the landed residential house located in a hot and humid climate area. An existing terrace house with 178 m2 was selected for this research. A building simulation model was created and calibrated by using the previous site measurement data collected by Ng et.al. in the year 2018. The calibrated model was subsequently used to evaluate various retrofitting methods and strategies, including roof insulation, and passive radiative cooling methods. The study shows that high albedo cool roof paint is the most effective roof retrofitting strategy compared to other approaches.

This study was undertaken to investigate seasonal adaptation to temperature in Japanese offices, with a view to suggesting an adaptive model for them. We measured temperatures in seven office buildings and conducted thermal comfort transverse surveys of occupants for over a year in the Aichi prefecture of Japan. We collected 1,228 samples. The occupants were found to be highly satisfied with the thermal environment in their offices. Even though the Japanese government recommends the indoor temperature of 28 °C for cooling and 20 °C for heating, we found that the comfort temperature was 2.8 °C lower in cooling mode and 4.3 °C higher in heating mode, in line with the actual indoor temperatures. The monthly variation in the temperature in the investigated offices was significantly lower than had been found in dwellings. An adaptive relationship can be derived to estimate the indoor comfort temperature from the prevailing outdoor temperature for similar office buildings.

Thermal comfort and sensation for each person might be different and varies despite being exposed to the same indoor environment due to the differences of their physiological factors such as gender and age. Thus, it is more challenging to provide suitable thermal environment that can satisfy each individual in the building or in the same dwelling. However, only a few studies pursue and focus on investigating the effect of physiological factors on individual thermal comfort perception. A field measurement was conducted in a condominium from September 2015 until October 2016. The measured indoor air environment in each 46 selected dwellings and 17,026 votes from thermal comfort survey for each individual person involved were collected. Therefore, this study aims to examine the variation of indoor thermal environment and determine the factors for the differences in individual thermal comfort. Hence, we categorized the individual from all selected dwellings into several groups depending on the gender and age. The results showed that there is a variation of comfort indoor air temperatures. Thus, these results can be important in designing guideline for each type of building as different user groups most likely to have different expectation regarding indoor thermal environment.

Office building thermal environment quality is essential since thermal comfort and worker productivity are closely related. As thermally comfortable condition is determined by the climate, geography, and surroundings, it is vital to have thermal comfort standards to guide the building designers to create a comfortable indoor thermal environment. The current paper reviews studies on adaptive approach of thermal comfort carried out in offices across the world. It has analyzed many research papers through Scopus. This study reveals that indoor thermal condition is impacted by outdoor climates and the impact is higher in naturally ventilated building. Building with natural ventilation has 17.6°C to 31.2°C rage of comfortable temperature. Adaptive comfort models have also been proposed to predict the comfortable indoor temperature in different modes. According to several studies, lowering the set point and using natural ventilation may result in considerable energy savings. The importance of developing climate specific thermal comfort guidelines in order to create energy efficient designs is also emphasized in this study, as present comfort standards may not be suitable for all climates.

Japan's goal of becoming carbon neutral by 2050 requires both efficient use of facilities and maintenance of comfort for office workers in office buildings. In this paper, we clarify comfort temperatures from adaptive model in an office building in Hokkaido, as well as examine the factors that influence a more comfortable office environment. In the thermal comfort declaration, “Neutral” was the most declared in the MX mode (ventilated environment regardless of heating/cooling use), and the office workers were satisfied with the thermal environment. The comfort temperature was around 25°C in both MX and HT modes (heated environment), and a positive correlation was observed between the comfort temperature and the moving average outdoor temperature in MX mode, which led us to propose an adaptive model. Although the outdoor temperature in this model was about 8 °C lower than in previous studies, the comfort temperature was within the same range. There was no correlation between the amount of clothing worn by workers and their perception of cold and heat, but there was a positive correlation with the amount of activity.

Monitoring of pollutant concentrations in surface water becomes a concern, considering the utilization of surface water as the raw water for drinking water treatment plants (WTP). The fluctuation of pollutant concentrations in surface water can affect the performance of WTP. This research was conducted to assess the potential for turbidity level prediction based on the calculation of the number and surface area of suspended particles through a digital image processing approach. Measurements of the amount and surface area were carried out in the form of laboratory-scale experiments using the open source software ImageJ 1.46r. The algorithm in ImageJ can convert pixels into a number “value” and surface area through a series of digital image processing steps, henceforth compared with the existing measurement method. The results showed that there was a strong correlation between the number of particles and the concentration of formazine suspension (r = 0.9821), but does not apply to the surface area. Referring to the results of laboratory experiments, it can be concluded that the approach to measure the number of suspended particles can be the basis for predicting the turbidity level in the turbidity range 100-800 NTU, but does not apply to the turbidity range 0.02-20 NTU.

Biological-aerobic process is a technology that is often chosen to treat wastewater in industrial areas, especially industries related to food industries. Compared to chemical treatment and advanced treatment, biological treatment is relatively more efficient in the costs required. However, in conventional biological treatment the amount of energy consumption in the process is a major cost component that it becomes one of the challenges in implementing this technology. This paper contains a review of the implementation of the Food Chain Reactor (FCR) technology in treating industrial area wastewater, focusing on an overview of energy consumption compared to conventional biological-aerobic treatment of oxidation ditch (OD). FCR is a wastewater treatment plant (IPAL) that combines Integrated Fixed Film Activated Sludge (IFAS) technology and technology that resembles Constructed Wetland, thus enabling the simultaneous physical, biological and biochemical treatment processes within the reactor. In this case study, the implementation succeeded in showing a reduction in energy consumption by 46.4% while maintaining an efficiency decrease in BOD by 83% and efficiency in decreasing ammonia by 82%. As with the OD process, in this FCR study showed that the denitrification process has not been successful.

The model of key factors contributing to support sustainability of the environmental management in the industrial estate were studied. These factors were the result of the prior research of prospective analysis that classified as the leverage factors and the driving factors. These factors were studied by the Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) as the criteria and alternatives input to elaborate the priority in the model of environmental management. AHP matrices were analyzed by purposive expert in the depth interview procedure. The analysis result showed that the industrial estate manager is the most important as the firts actor in the model (63.7%), the second actor is the industrial company as the tenant of the first actor (25.8%), and third actor is the local government (10.5 %). The priority of the dimension of the model in a row were economic (38.1%), social (19.4%), institutional management (19.3%), ecology (13.8%) and technology (9.4%). For developing the model there were five driving factors that develop the alternatives of the policy for achieving the goal. The priority of the alternatives in a row were improving the quality of industrial wastewater (29.5%), improving wastewater quality of integrated wastewater treatment plant outlet of the estate manager facility (21.5%), obtaining the industrial water demand (19.1%), conducting 3R (reduce, reuse and recycle) program of hazardous waste, and maintaining and supporting employed people in condusive work environment. By AHP result which resulting the priority of actors, dimensions, and alternatives, the model was developed effectively.

Nepal has low per-capita energy use and a majority of its rural residents use firewood as their primary energy source. Excessive use of firewood in improperly ventilated buildings degrades the indoor environment and health condition of the inhabitants. This study aims to assess the influence of hourly firewood consumption patterns on CO2 emissions and resulting concentrations in rural households in Nepal. A field survey was conducted for 24 h in 16 households during winter. The results suggest that most of the households tend to use more firewood during the morning and evening hours. Family size and number of animals reared by the households were positively correlated with firewood consumption, whereas family size was negatively correlated with per-capita firewood consumption. Per-capita firewood consumption was found to be 1.8 kg/(capita·day). Household firewood consumption and CO2 emissions were 12 kg/(family·day) and 14.26 kg CO2 e/(household·day), respectively. The larger households spent more time for cooking, while their consumption rate was similar (1.3 kg/h) to that of smaller households. High indoor CO2 emissions in the morning and evening hours due to high firewood consumption may pose severe health risks to the inhabitants. Therefore, intensive awareness programs and pollution control programs are suggested for improving indoor air quality and health condition of the rural population.

We report a case of a 19 year adolescent, who underwent unsafe induced abortion at 14 weeks of pregnancy followed by continuous pain and fever discovered at laparotomy to be due to uterine perforation with the findings of product of conception along with flat bone popping through a uterine rent in anterior and lower part of the uterus within the vicinity of uterovesical which was repaired with good outcome. There has been a call to action to enhance representation of non-white individuals in dermatology clinical trials. Investigations in differential response to treatment across populations are limited, particularly in conditions of commonality, impact, distinct presentation, and diagnosis in non-white participants, such as atopic dermatitis and psoriasis. This systematic review summarized and identified if biologic treatment outcomes in moderate-to-severe atopic dermatitis and psoriasis varied in skin of colour (SOC) participants in phase 3 trials. MEDLINE, COCHRANE, and EMBASE databases were used to conduct the search following PROSPERO registration. Following screening of 3209 articles, 11 studies were collected with 1781 SOC participants with a mean age of 40.99 ± 6.3 years (range: 30.6-51.6 years). Male participants accounted for 76.9% (n = 1370/1781) of the sample, and Chinese, Japanese, Taiwanese, and Korean participants accounted for 64.3%, 24.2%, 4.5%, and 3.4% of participants, respectively. Participants with atopic dermatitis were treated with dupilumab (n = 216/388) and participants with psoriasis were treated with adalimumab (n = 313/1393), bimekizumab (n = 62/1393), ixekizumab (n = 13/1393), secukinumab (n = 117/1393), and ustekinumab (n = 289/1393). No significant SOC population-based outcomes were found across treatment groups. However, differences in baseline characteristics or comorbidities were found, suggesting race or ethnic background should be considered when treatment is prescribed in psoriasis or atopic dermatitis. Introduction: Proteinuria is usually related with preeclampsia during pregnancy, although it can also be caused by other conditions such as renal disease or isolated proteinuria. Proteinuria during pregnancy can result in adverse fetomaternal outcomes. The study aimed to find the prevalence of proteinuria among pregnant women admitted to the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology of a tertiary care centre., Methods: A descriptive cross-sectional study was carried out among pregnant women in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology after obtaining ethical approval from the Institutional Review Committee. Data of 14 April 2022 to 13 April 2023 was collected from 9 June 2023 to 9 September 2023 from medical records. The study included pregnant women aged 18-45 years, who were past 28 weeks of gestation and had a 24-hour urine protein measurement. Pregnant women who had insufficient medical records were excluded from the study. A convenience sampling method was used. The point estimate was calculated at a 95% Confidence Interval., Results: Among 3,914 pregnant women, proteinuria was seen in 61 (1.56%) (1.17-1.95, 95% Confidence Interval). The mean proteinuria in the study group was 1.5±2.75 gm/24 hr. In pregnant women with proteinuria, maternal complications were seen in 51 (83.60%) and foetal complications in 34 (55.73%) cases. A total of 47 (77.05%) underwent emergency lower-section caesarean section., Conclusions: The prevalence of proteinuria among pregnant women was found to be similar as compared to studies done in similar settings., Keywords: preeclampsia; pregnancy complications; proteinuria.

Background Second-trimester abortions, constitute 10-15% of global annual abortions, leading to two-thirds of major abortion-related complications. Recognizing the elevated risk, the WHO recommends diverse methods for safe termination. Surgical and medical approaches, particularly using drugs like Mifepristone and Misoprostol, show promising success rates. Objective To analyze the outcomes of second-trimester termination using Mifepristone or PG analogues alone or in combination. Method This is a one-year retrospective study at Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital analyzing second-trimester terminations, collecting data on demographics, medical history, period of gestation, doses of abotificient drugs, complications, and management. Result In a study of 66 second-trimester abortions, mean age was 28.8±4.96 years, gestational age 20.07±4.3 weeks. Mifepristone and Misoprostol combination succeeded in 66.7% of cases, while 42.2% required repeated Mifepristone doses. Misoprostol use was significantly higher in patients without medical comorbidities (p=0.018), but Mifepristone requirement didn't differ significantly based on medical conditions. Combined Mifepristone and Misoprostol were used more for fetal indications. Notably, the use of Mifepristone and Misoprostol didn't significantly differ for live and intrauterine fetal death cases. Conclusion Mifepristone and Misoprostol effectively terminate second-trimester pregnancies. In high-risk cases, cautious Prostaglandin use is crucial and Mifepristone alone, in divided doses, reduces complications with high success.

Introduction: Surgical site infections are the commonest nosocomial infections following surgeries. They not only increase the morbidity and mortality following surgeries but also have a great impact both psychologically and financially. The aim of this study was to find out the prevalence of postoperative surgical site infection among patients with caesarean delivery in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology in a tertiary care centre., Methods: This descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology of a tertiary care centre after taking ethical approval from the Institutional Review Committee (Reference number: 495(6-11)E2 077/078). Data from 1 July 2021 to 1 July 2022 were collected between 1 September 2022 to 30 November 2022 from the hospital records. All the pregnant women undergoing caesarean delivery during the study period were included. Convenience sampling method was used. Point estimate and 95% Confidence Interval were calculated., Results: Out of 1326 patients who underwent caesarean delivery, surgical site infection was seen in 38 (2.86%) (1.96-3.76, 95% Confidence Interval). Among 38 women, anaemia was seen in 11 (28.94%), diabetes mellitus in 6 (15.79%) and hypertension in 5 (13.16%)., Conclusions: The prevalence of surgical site infection following caesarean delivery was found to be lower than other studies done in similar settings., Keywords: hypertension; prevalence; surgical site infection.
