The Sicily Channel, located in the central Mediterranean Sea, represents a key point for the regional oceanographic circulation, as it is regarded as the sill that separates the western and eastern basins. Therefore, it is regarded as a unique zone in the well-documented west-to-east Mediterranean productivity gradient. Here we present a time series of settling planktonic foraminifera assemblages from November 2013 to October 2014. Altogether, 19 samples from the sediment trap C01 deployed at a water depth of around 400 m have been used. More than 3700 individuals and 15 different species have been identified. Globorotalia inflata, Globorotalia truncatulinoides, Globigerina bulloides, Globigerinoides ruber, and Globigerinoides ruber (pink) were the five main species identified, accounting for more than 85 % of the total foraminifera. The total planktonic foraminifera flux mean value was 630 shells m -2 d -1 , with a minimum value of 45 shells m -2 d -1 displayed during late autumn 2013 and a maximum of 1890 shells m -2 d -1 reached during spring 2014. This is likely due to the regional oceanographic configuration and the marked seasonality in the surface circulation. During spring and winter, Atlantic Water (AW) dominates the surface circulation, bringing cool and nutrient-enriched waters. This results in a planktonic foraminifera flux increase and a dominance of western basin taxa. During summer and autumn, the circulation is dominated by the eastern warm and oligotrophic Levantine water, which leads to a planktonic foraminifera flux decrease and the dominance of eastern basin species. Our comparison with satellite-derived sea surface temperatures (SSTs) and chlorophyll a data showed that G. inflata was associated with cool and nutrient-rich conditions, while both G. ruber morphotypes were associated with warm and oligotrophic conditions. However, no trends were identified for G. truncatulinoides or G. bulloides. As the latter species flux increased coincidently with that of benthic foraminifera, we considered that this species might have a resuspended origin. The comparison of the Sicily Channel data with other Mediterranean time series indicates that the annualized planktonic foraminifera flux was lower than in the westernmost Alboran Sea but higher than in the easternmost Levantine Basin. The Sicily Channel species diversity was the highest among the compared zones, highlighting the influence of the different basins and its transitional aspect from a planktonic foraminifera population perspective. Finally, we compared the settling planktonic foraminifera assemblage with the assemblages from seabed sediment located in the vicinity of the Sicily Channel. The differences in the seabed populations varied according to the sites studied. The deep-dwelling species dominated the settling assemblage samples, while eutrophic and oligotrophic species were more abundant in the sediment. Finally, a high-resolution chronology comparison allowed us to show that this planktonic foraminifera population shift likely developed during the late Holocene prior to the industrial period; however, its causes remain uncertain. Pteropods are a group of cosmopolitan holoplanktic gastropods that produce an aragonite shell and play an important role in both marine ecosystems and geochemical cycles. In addition to being affected by anthropogenic impacts that include warming and changes in carbonate system parameters, the Mediterranean Sea is considered to be understudied concerning pteropods dynamics and abundances. This work aims to document the modern spatial and temporal distributions of pteropods populations in the Northwestern and Central Mediterranean Sea (Gulf of Lions and Strait of Sicily), respectively. We present data from two sediment-trap records that cover the timeframe between early 1996 and early 2004 for the Gulf of Lions and late 2013 to late 2014 for the Sicily Strait. A total of 843 pteropod shells and 18 different species were identified. Limacina inflata, Creseis virgula and Creseis clava were the most abundant species in the Gulf of Lions, while in the Sicily Strait, C. conica replaced C. clava as the most abundant species. These taxons represented around 70% of the total individuals identified in both sites. Overall, our results suggest a greater pteropod abundance in the Gulf of Lions than in the Sicily Strait, most likely due to enhanced food conditions. In the Gulf of Lions, maximum fluxes occurred in autumn (32.5% of the annual pteropod fluxes registered in October), while in the Sicily Strait peak fluxes occurred in winter (30.5% of the annual pteropod fluxes registered in January). Comparison of temporal changes pteropod fluxes with satellite sea surface temperature (SST), and chlorophyll-a concentration suggest a possible positive effect of high algal accumulation and cool water conditions in the Strait of Sicily on the main pteropod groups. In turn, no clear relationships between pteropod groups, SST and chlorophyll-a were identified in the Gulf of Lions, highlighting the effect of salinity and carbonate system parameters. Overall, and despite the limitations associated with the use of sediment traps for pteropod population monitoring, the consistency of our results with the literature supports the use of sediment traps as useful tools for documenting the diversity and temporal distribution of pteropods. The Mediterranean Sea sustains a rich and fragile ecosystem currently threatened by multiple anthropogenic impacts that include, among others, warming, pollution, and changes in seawater carbonate speciation associated to increasing uptake of atmospheric CO 2. This environmental change represents a major risk for marine calcifiers such as planktonic foraminifera, key components of pelagic Mediterranean ecosystems and major exporters of calcium carbonate to the sea floor, thereby playing a major role in the marine carbon cycle. In this study, we investigate the response of planktic foraminifera calcification in the northwestern Mediterranean Sea on different timescales across the industrial era. This study is based on data from a 12-year-long sediment trap record retrieved in the in the Gulf of Lions and seabed sediment samples from the Gulf of Lions and the promontory of Menorca. Three different planktic foraminifera species were selected based on their different ecology and abundance: Globigerina bulloides, Neogloboquadrina incompta, and Globorotalia truncatulinoides. A total of 273 samples were weighted in both sediment trap and seabed samples. The results of our study suggest substantial different seasonal calcification patterns across species: G. bulloides shows a slight calcification increase during the high productivity period, while both N. incompta and G. truncatulinoides display a higher calcification during the low productivity period. The comparison of these patterns with environmental parameters indicate that controls on seasonal calcification are species-specific. Interannual analysis suggests that both G. bulloides and N. incompta did not significantly reduce their calcification between 1994 and 2005, while G. truncatulinoides exhibited a constant and pronounced increase in its calcification that translated in an increase of 20 % of its shell weight. The comparison of these patterns with environmental data reveals that optimum growth conditions affect positively and negatively G. bulloides and G. truncatulinoides calcification, respectively. Sea surface temperatures (SSTs) have a positive influence on N. incompta and G. truncatulinoides calcification, while carbonate system parameters appear to affect positively the calcification of three species in the Gulf of Lions throughout the 12-year time series. Finally, comparison between sediment trap data and seabed sediments allowed us to assess the changes of planktic foraminifera calcification during the late Holocene, including the pre-industrial era. Several lines of evidence indicate that selective dissolution did not bias the results in any of our data sets. Our results showed a weight reduction between pre-industrial and post-industrial Holocene and recent data, with G. truncatulinoides experiencing the largest weight loss (32 %–40 %) followed by G. bulloides (18 %–24 %) and N. incompta (9 %–18 %). Overall, our results provide evidence of a decrease in planktic foraminifera calcification in the western Mediterranean, most likely associated with ongoing ocean acidification and regional SST trends, a feature consistent with previous observations in other settings of the world's oceans. The aim of this work is to investigate the variability of planktic foraminifera calcification in the northwestern Mediterranean Sea on seasonal, interannual and pre-industrial Holocene time scales. This study is based on data from a 12-year-long sediment trap record retrieved in the in the Gulf of Lions and seabed sediment samples from the Gulf of Lions and the promontory of Menorca. As the traditionally used sieve fractions method is considered unreliable because of the effect of morphometric parameters on the foraminifera weight, we measured area and diameter to constrain the effect of these parameters. The results of our study show substantial different seasonal calcification patterns across species: G. bulloides showed a slight calcification increase during the high productivity period, while both N. incompta and G. truncatulinoides display a higher calcification during the low productivity period. The comparison of these patterns with environmental parameters revealed that Optimum Growth Conditions temperature and carbonate system parameters are the most likely to influence seasonal calcification in the Gulf of Lions. Interannual analysis suggest that both G. bulloides and N. incompta slightly reduced their calcification between 1994 and 2005, while G. truncatulinoides exhibited a constant and pronounced increase in its calcification that translated in an increase of 20 % of its shell weight for the 400–500 µm narrow size class. While our data suggest that carbonate system parameters are the most likely environmental parameter driving foraminifera calcification changes over the years. Finally, comparison between sediment trap data and seabed sediments allowed us to assess the changes of planktic foraminifera calcification during the late Holocene, including the preindustrial era. Several lines of evidence strongly indicate that selective dissolution did not bias the results in any of our data sets. Our results showed a clear calcification reduction between pre-industrial Holocene and recent data with G. truncatulinoides experiencing the largest calcification decrease (32–40 %) followed by N. incompta (20–27 %) and G. bulloides (18–24 %). This study investigates the abundance, composition, and biogeographical distribution of coccolithophores in the water column of the northwestern Iberian coastal upwelling system during late summer 2022. Coccolithophore data were compared with in situ measurements of physical, chemical, and biological parameters, as well as with satellite data and the upwelling index (UI) for the study area. Canonical Correspondence Analysis (CCA) was performed to determine the relationships between coccolithophore assemblages and environmental variables. The results reveal a latitudinal and longitudinal gradient in coccolithophore abundance, with higher concentrations towards the north and east, indicating a stronger influence of coastal upwelling near the coast (stations CA-7, CA-8, CA-4). Our data suggest that the source of upwelled water in the north (Eastern North Atlantic Central Waters of subpolar origin, ENACWsp) differs from that in the south (ENACWst, of subtropical origin). Significant correlations between UI and the total abundance of coccoliths and coccospheres underscore the role of upwelling in coccolithophore distribution. Additionally, correlations with fluorescence and turbidity indicate that coccolithophores contribute substantially to primary production in the region. Certain species are proposed as paleoenvironmental indicators due to their affinity for specific environmental conditions. The small Noëlaerhabdaceae group (small Gephyrocapsa group + Emiliania huxleyi) serves as a proxy for primary productivity and intense upwelling, while Florisphaera profunda is associated with upwelling relaxation and low productivity. Discrepancies with satellite data are attributed to their limitations in detecting subsurface biological processes. Southern Ocean waters are projected to undergo profound changes in their physical and chemical properties in the coming decades. Coccolithophore blooms in the Southern Ocean are thought to account for a major fraction of the global marine calcium carbonate (CaCO3) production and export to the deep sea. Therefore, changes in the composition and abundance of Southern Ocean coccolithophore populations are likely to alter the marine carbon cycle, with feedbacks to the rate of global climate change. However, the contribution of coccolithophores to CaCO3 export in the Southern Ocean is uncertain, particularly in the circumpolar Subantarctic Zone that represents about half of the areal extent of the Southern Ocean and where coccolithophores are most abundant. Here, we present measurements of annual CaCO3 flux and quantitatively partition them amongst coccolithophore species and heterotrophic calcifiers at two sites representative of a large portion of the Subantarctic Zone. We find that coccolithophores account for a major fraction of the annual CaCO3 export with highest contributions in waters with low algal biomass accumulations. Notably, our analysis reveals that although Emiliania huxleyi is an important vector for CaCO3 export to the deep sea, less abundant but larger species account for most of the annual coccolithophore CaCO3 flux. This observation contrasts with satellite remote sensing images that mostly reflect E. huxleyi blooms as a result of its higher cell abundance and detachment of its relatively small liths. It appears likely that the climate-induced migration of oceanic fronts will initially result in the poleward expansion of large coccolithophore species increasing CaCO3 production. However, subantarctic coccolithophore populations will eventually diminish as acidification overwhelms those changes. Overall, our analysis emphasizes the need for species-centred studies to improve our ability to project future changes in phytoplankton communities and their influence on marine biogeochemical cycles. Semiautomated methods for microscopic image acquisition, image analysis, and taxonomic identification have repeatedly received attention in diatom analysis. Less well studied is the question whether and how such methods might prove useful for clarifying the delimitation of species that are difficult to separate for human taxonomists. To try to answer this question, three very similar Fragilariopsis species endemic to the Southern Ocean were targeted in this study: F. obliquecostata, F. ritscheri, and F. sublinearis. A set of 501 extended focus depth specimen images were obtained using a standardized, semiautomated microscopic procedure. Twelve diatomists independently identified these specimen images in order to reconcile taxonomic opinions and agree upon a taxonomic gold standard. Using image analyses, we then extracted morphometric features representing taxonomic characters of the target taxa. The discriminating ability of individual morphometric features was tested visually and statistically, and multivariate classification experiments were performed to test the agreement of the quantitatively defined taxa assignments with expert consensus opinion. Beyond an updated differential diagnosis of the studied taxa, our study also shows that automated imaging and image analysis procedures for diatoms are coming close to reaching a broad applicability for routine use. The Southern Ocean is experiencing rapid and relentless change in its physical and biogeochemical properties. The rate of warming of the Antarctic Circumpolar Current exceeds that of the global ocean, and the enhanced uptake of carbon dioxide is causing basin-wide ocean acidification. Observational data suggest that these changes are influencing the distribution and composition of pelagic plankton communities. Long-term and annual field observations on key environmental variables and organisms are a critical basis for predicting changes in Southern Ocean ecosystems. These observations are particularly needed, since high-latitude systems have been projected to experience the most severe impacts of ocean acidification and invasions of allochthonous species. Coccolithophores are the most prolific calcium carbonate producing phytoplankton group, playing an important role in Southern Ocean biogeochemical cycles. Satellite imagery has revealed elevated particulate inorganic carbon concentrations near the major circumpolar fronts of the Southern Ocean, that can be attributed to the coccolithophore Emiliania huxleyi. Recent studies have suggested changes during the last decades in the distribution and abundance of Southern Ocean coccolithophores. However, due to limited field observations, the distribution, diversity and state of coccolithophore populations in the Southern Ocean remain poorly characterized. We report here on seasonal variations in the abundance and composition of coccolithophore assemblages collected by two moored sediment traps deployed in the deep ocean (~ 2000 and 3700 m) in the Australian sector of the Antarctic Zone for one year in 2001-02. Additionally, seasonal changes in coccolith weights of E. huxleyi populations were estimated using circularly polarized micrographs analysed with C-Calcita software. Our findings indicate that (1) coccolithophore sinking assemblages were nearly monospecific for Emiliania huxleyi morphotype B/C in the Antarctic Zone waters in 2001-2002; (2) coccolith assemblages experienced weight and length reduction during the summer months; (3) the estimated annual coccolith weight of E. huxleyi at both sediment trap depths (2.11 ± 0.96 and 2.13 ± 0.90 pg at 2000 m and 3700 m) was consistent with previous studies for morphotype B/C in other Southern Ocean settings; (4) coccolithophores accounted for approximately 2-5 % of the annual, deep-ocean CaCO3 flux. Our results are the first annual record of coccolithophore abundance, composition and degree of calcification in the Antarctic Zone.
