Abstract

Differential object marking (DOM) is known from a great variety of language families. We present data suggesting that, contrary to what is suggested in recent typological surveys, DOM is also a widespread phenomenon in Austronesian symmetrical voice languages. To do this, we show why the identification of DOM constructions in these languages is difficult, propose a definition for DOM that takes note of the peculiarities of symmetrical voice systems, and briefly review three types of DOM systems attested in the area. Our findings have implications for claims regarding the universality of DOM, and quality control in compiling large-scale typological databases. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The expression of bring and take events (so-called ‘caused accompanied mo- tion (CAM)’ events) in the Oceanic language Vera’a (North Vanuatu) is analysed in terms of lexical and constructional compositionality. The two lexical verbs centrally involved in CAM expressions have fairly general semantic content not specific to CAM events, meaning ‘move sth.’ and ‘accompany’. These are used in constructional frames with dative and locative prepositions, serialization with verbs of motion, and directional adverbs and particles. Such constructions can then yield a CAM reading. However, they can also receive a non-CAM reading, so that the verbalisation of CAM events is ultimately a matter of pragmatic in- ference in Vera’a and never unambiguously encoded. Different verbs are used to specify manner of handling themes, and manner of motion as well as direction can be incorporated in motion verbs in initial position of verb serialization (satellite-framed).

Abstract

International audience; Yali is a Trans-New Guinea language, spoken in the highlands of Papua, Indonesia. It belongs to the Dani subgroup of the West Trans New-Guinea linkage, and is spoken by approximately 30,000 people in the mountainous area east of the city of Wamena. This book consists of two parts. The central part is a Yali-English-German dictionary, one among few detailed and philologically sound dictionaries of a TNG highland language. It contains more than 3000 headwords, which cover a large amount of the Yali everyday lexicon, as well as a variety of culturally relevant concepts used in Yali rituals and traditional myths. Most entries include detailed definitions and example sentences that illustrate the use of the respective headword. The data for this dictionary were collected by the German missionary Siegfried Zöllner and his wife Ilse between 1961 and 1973.

26. Perspectives on information structure in Austronesian languages

Abstract

Information structure is a relatively new field to linguistics and has only recently been studied for smaller and less described languages. This book is the first of its kind that brings together contributions on information structure in Austronesian languages. Current approaches from formal semantics, discourse studies, and intonational phonology are brought together with language specific and cross-linguistic expertise of Austronesian languages. The 13 chapters in this volume cover all subgroups of the large Austronesian family, including Formosan, Central Malayo-Polynesian, South Halmahera-West New Guinea, and Oceanic. The major focus, though, lies on Western Malayo-Polynesian languages. Some chapters investigate two of the largest languages in the region (Tagalog and different varieties of Malay), others study information-structural phenomena in small, underdescribed languages. The three overarching topics that are covered in this book are NP marking and reference tracking devices, syntactic structures and information-structural categories, and the interaction of information structure and prosody. Various data types build the basis for the different studies compiled in this book. Some chapters investigate written texts, such as modern novels (cf. Djenar’s chapter on modern, standard Indonesian), or compare different text genres, such as, for example, oral narratives and translations of biblical narratives (cf. De Busser’s chapter on Bunun). Most contributions, however, study natural spoken speech and make use of spoken corpora which have been compiled by the authors themselves. The volume comprises a number of different methods and theoretical frameworks. Two chapters make use of the Question Under Discussion approach, developed in formal semantics (cf. the chapters by Latrouite & Riester; Shiohara & Riester). Riesberg et al. apply the recently developed method of Rapid Prosody Transcription (RPT) to investigate native speakers’ perception of prosodic prominences and boundaries in Papuan Malay. Other papers discuss theoretical consequences of their findings. Thus, for example, Himmelmann takes apart the most widespread framework for intonational phonology (ToBI) and argues that the analysis of Indonesian languages requires much simpler assumptions than the ones underlying the standard model. Arka & Sedeng ask the question how fine-grained information structure space should be conceptualized and modelled, e.g. in LFG. Schnell argues that elements that could be analysed as “topic” and “focus” categories, should better be described in terms of ‘packaging’ and do not necessarily reflect any pragmatic roles in the first place.

International audience; One of Himmelmann’s primary goals in his 1998 paper was to argue for a strict division of documentation and description. Language documentation has since successfully developed to become a discipline in its own right. Nevertheless, the question concerning the interrelation of description (and thus analysis) and documentation remains a matter of controversy. This paper reflects on descriptive and documentary adequacy, focusing on two major issues. First, it addresses the question of how much analysis should enter into an adequate documentation of a language and, second, it discusses the role of language documentation and primary data in the replicability of linguistic analyses.

42. Optional ergative, agentivity and discourse prominence - Evidence from Yali (Trans-New Guinea)

Abstract

A phenomenon often termed optional ergative marking is found in a number of genetically unrelated languages. Yali, a Trans-New Guinea language spoken in West Papua, shows striking similarities to optional ergative systems as described in the literature. This paper focuses on the relation between agentivity and discourse prominence, and argues in favour of a systematic distinction between semantic and syntactic contexts as conditioning factors for optional ergative marking. It further provides new evidence for the close interplay of ergative marking and what has been termed discourse prominence in descriptions of some other languages and shows that in Yali, optional ergative marking operates on both the global and the local level of discourse.

Abstract

Yali is a Trans-New Guinea language, spoken in the highlands of West Papua, Indonesia. It belongs to the Dani sub-group of the West Trans New-Guinea linkage, and is spoken by approximately 30.000 people in the mountainous area north-east, east, and south-east of the city of Wamena. The Ethnologue lists Pass Valley Yali, Angguruk Yali, and Ninia Yali as three distinct languages, belonging to the Ngalik sub-group of the Dani languages. However, people from these different geographic areasseem to be able to understand and communicate with each other. The Yali themselves distinguish four different dialectal regions: Abenaho, Angguruk, Apahapsili, and Ninia. This, however, might partially also be influenced by the fact that each of these areas has its own mission station. The differences among these varieties are mostly lexical or phonological, and Abenaho and Apahapsili often agree with each other as opposed to the other two. There are two editions of this Yali Dictionary: a Yali-German edition, published in 2017, and a Yali-English-German edition, published in 2021.
