12. Self‐assembled fullerene (C60)‐pentacene superstructures for photodetectors.

Abstract

Fullerene assembling with specific donor molecules would yield multifunctional metamaterials via the collective behavior, wherein linear acenes are widely used as donor molecules to construct the charge‐transfer heterojunction structure with fullerene. However, they are generally prepared by vacuum deposition due to the insoluble property of high‐performance linear acenes molecules in common solvents, which makes the construction of fullerene with insoluble donor molecules still be a big challenge in the solution‐processed method. To this end, chemical modification provides an effective solution‐processed strategy to construct donor and acceptor systems. Here, the C60‐pentacene is assembled into controllable flower‐like superstructures by the surface grafting method. It is found that the nanofeatures of the microflowers could be regulated by temperature, resulting in dense‐flakes morphology at room temperature and loose flakes at high temperatures. Furthermore, the dense‐flakes microflowers structures with less mass but better crystalline structure exhibit better optoelectronic properties. Our results reveal an effective control on the nanofeatures of the self‐assembled fullerenes complex superstructures and their role for the optoelectronic performance, which may promote the exploring of fullerene superstructures as photodetectors. Abstract

The homology between restin and three other cytoskeletal proteins of varied biological functions was demonstrated. All four cytoskeletal-associated proteins displayed a common coiled-coil secondary structure. They all showed a highly conserved glycine residue at the amino terminal domain followed by a secondary modification sequence. Restin and BIK1 from Saccharomyces cerevisiae showed a metal-binding site at the carboxy end. These data suggest possible functional similarities among such proteins in different organisms.

36. Targeted Delivery of Human VEGF Gene via Complexes of Magnetic Nanoparticle-Adenoviral Vectors Enhanced Cardiac Regeneration.

Abstract

This study assessed the concept of whether delivery of magnetic nanobeads (MNBs)/adenoviral vectors (Ad)-encoded hVEGF gene (AdhVEGF) could regenerate ischaemically damaged hearts in a rat acute myocardial infarction model under the control of an external magnetic field. Adenoviral vectors were conjugated to MNBs with the Sulfo-NHS-LC-Biotin linker. In vitro transduction efficacy of MNBs/Ad-encoded luciferase gene (Adluc) was compared with Adluc alone in human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) under magnetic field stimulation. In vivo, in a rat acute myocardial infarction (AMI) model, MNBs/AdhVEGF complexes were injected intravenously and an epicardial magnet was employed to attract the circulating MNBs/AdhVEGF complexes. In vitro, compared with Adluc alone, MNBs/Adluc complexes had a 50-fold higher transduction efficiency under the magnetic field. In vivo, epicardial magnet effectively attracted MNBs/AdhVEGF complexes and resulted in strong therapeutic gene expression in the ischemic zone of the infarcted heart. When compared to other MI-treated groups, the MI-M+/AdhVEGF group significantly improved left ventricular function (p<0.05) assessed by pressure-volume loops after 4 weeks. Also the MI-M+/AdhVEGF group exhibited higher capillary and arteriole density and lower collagen deposition than other MI-treated groups (p<0.05). Magnetic targeting enhances transduction efficiency and improves heart function. This novel method to improve gene therapy outcomes in AMI treatment offers the potential into clinical applications. Abstract

The application of nanotechnology concepts to medicine joins two large cross-disciplinary fields with an unprecedented societal and economical potential arising from the natural combination of specific achievements in the respective fields. The common basis evolves from the molecular-scale properties relevant to the two fields. Local probes and molecular imaging techniques allow surface and interface properties to be characterized on a nanometer scale at predefined locations, while chemical approaches offer the opportunity to elaborate and address surfaces, for example, for targeted drug delivery, enhanced biocompatibility, and neuroprosthetic purposes. However, concerns arise in this cross-disciplinary area about toxicological aspects and ethical implications. This Review gives an overview of selected recent developments and applications of nanomedicine.
