Radio galaxies have long been considered as potential sources of ultra-high-energy cosmic rays (UHECRs). Recent analyses of the UHECR spectrum, composition, and arrival directions indicate that the nearest radio galaxy, Centaurus A, could be linked to the reported dipole anisotropy, though the mechanism underlying the acceleration remains elusive. In this Letter, we explore UHECR acceleration in the kiloparsec-scale jets of radio galaxies, exemplified by Centaurus A. Using high-resolution relativistic magneto-hydrodynamic and test-particle simulations without sub-grid physics, we investigate the acceleration of the highest-energy particles in the turbulent sheath of a fast-moving jet. Our findings demonstrate that acceleration close to the maximum theoretical expectation is possible. When extrapolated to nearby radio galaxies, our results suggest that the kiloparsec-scale jets of Centaurus A could account for the dipole anisotropy in UHECRs, while more potent Fanaroff-Riley type II radio galaxies may account for the observed UHECR spectrum with a rigidity cutoff at a few Exavolts., Comment: 11 pages, 9 figures, 1 table, 3 appendices, accepted to ApJL

High-resolution radio observations of nearby active galactic nuclei have revealed extended, limb-brightened structures in their inner jets. This ties in with other multi-wavelength observations from radio to X-ray and gamma-ray, indicating that a structured jet model is required. While electrons need to be kept energized to account for the observed features, the underlying particle acceleration mechanism is still unclear. We explore the role of stochastic Fermi-type particle acceleration, i.e., classical second-order Fermi and shear acceleration, for understanding the multi-wavelength observations of the inner jets of M87. An analytical Fokker-Planck description is adopted to infer characteristic spectral indices and cutoff energies for these two mechanisms. We focus on electron synchrotron radiation as the dominant emission process. We find that the multi-wavelength observations of M87 can be satisfactorily accounted for in a framework, where the X-rays are produced at a larger distance from the core than the radio emission region. This provides further support to multi-zone, broadband emission modelling. The detection of gravitational waves from a binary neutron star merger by Advanced LIGO and Advanced Virgo (GW170817), along with the discovery of the electromagnetic counterparts of this gravitational wave event, ushered in a new era of multimessenger astronomy, providing the first direct evidence that BNS mergers are progenitors of short gamma-ray bursts (GRBs). Such events may also produce very-high-energy (VHE, > 100GeV) photons which have yet to be detected in coincidence with a gravitational wave signal. The Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) is a next-generation VHE observatory which aims to be indispensable in this search, with an unparalleled sensitivity and ability to slew anywhere on the sky within a few tens of seconds. New observing modes and follow-up strategies are being developed for CTA to rapidly cover localization areas of gravitational wave events that are typically larger than the CTA field of view. This work will evaluate and provide estimations on the expected number of of gravitational wave events that will be observable with CTA, considering both on- and off-axis emission. Shear particle acceleration is a promising candidate for the origin of extended high-energy emission in extra-galactic jets. In this paper, we explore the applicability of a shear model to 24 X-ray knots in the large-scale jets of FR II radio galaxies, and study the jet properties by modeling the multi-wavelength spectral energy distributions (SEDs) in a leptonic framework including synchrotron and inverse Compton - CMB processes. In order to improve spectral modelling, we analyze Fermi-LAT data for five sources and reanalyzed archival data of Chandra on 15 knots, exploring the radio to X-ray connection. We show that the X-ray SEDs of these knots can be satisfactorily modelled by synchrotron radiation from a second, shear-accelerated electron population reaching multi-TeV energies. The inferred flow speeds are compatible with large-scale jets being mildly relativistic. We explore two different shear flow profiles (i.e., linearly decreasing and power-law) and find that the required spine speeds differ only slightly, supporting the notion that for higher flow speeds the variations in particle spectral indices are less dependent on the presumed velocity profile. The derived magnetic field strengths are in the range of a few to ten microGauss, and the required power in non-thermal particles typically well below the Eddington constraint. The last decade has seen tremendous developments in gamma-ray astronomy with the extragalactic sky becoming highly populated by Active Galactic Nuclei (AGNs). X-ray observations of several kiloparsec-scale extragalactic jets favour a synchrotron origin. The short cooling times of the emitting electrons requires distributed acceleration of electrons up to sub-PeV energies. In a previous paper, we found that this can be self-consistently explained by a shear acceleration model, where particles are accelerated to produce power-law spectra with a spectral index being determined mainly by the velocity profile and turbulence spectrum. In this paper, we perform 3D relativistic magneto-hydrodynamic simulations to investigate the formation of a spine-sheath structure and the development of turbulence for a relativistic jet propagating into a static cocoon. We explore different spine velocities and magnetic field profiles with values being chosen to match typical Fanaroff-Riley type I/II jets. We find that in all cases a sheath is generated on the interface of the spine and the cocoon mainly due to the Kelvin-Helmholtz instability. The large scale velocity profile in the sheath is close to linear. Turbulence develops in both the spine and the sheath, with a turbulent velocity spectrum consistent with Kolmogorov-scaling. Active Galactic Nuclei (AGNs) and their relativistic jets belong to the most promising class of ultra-high-energy cosmic ray (UHECR) accelerators. This compact review summarises basic experimental findings by recent instruments, and discusses possible interpretations and astrophysical constraints on source energetics. Particular attention is given to potential sites and mechanisms of UHECR acceleration in AGNs, including gap-type particle acceleration close to the black hole, as well as first-order Fermi acceleration at trans-relativistic shocks and stochastic shear particle acceleration in large-scale jets. We consider the acceleration of charged particles in relativistic shearing flows, with Lorentz factor up to $\Gamma_0 \sim 20$. We present numerical solutions to the particle transport equation and compare these with results from analytical calculations. We show that in the highly relativistic limit the particle energy spectrum that results from acceleration approaches a power law, $N(E)\propto E^{-\tilde{q}}$, with a universal value $\tilde{q}=(1+\alpha)$ for the slope of this power law, where $\alpha$ parameterizes the power-law momentum dependence of the particle mean free path. At mildly relativistic flow speeds, the energy spectrum becomes softer and sensitive to the underlying flow profile. We explore different flow examples, including Gaussian and power-law-type velocity profiles, showing that the latter yield comparatively harder spectra, producing $\tilde{q}\simeq 2$ for $\Gamma_0 \simeq 3$ and Kolmogorov turbulence. We provide a comparison with a simplified leaky-box approach and derive an approximate relation for estimating the spectral index as a function of the maximum shear flow speed. These results are of relevance for jetted, high-energy astrophysical sources such as active galactic nuclei, since shear acceleration is a promising mechanism for the acceleration of charged particles to relativistic energies and is likely to contribute to the high-energy radiation observed., Comment: 14 pages, 10 figures; ApJ in press

The radiative loss interpretation for the broken power-law spectra of blazars is often questioned since the difference between the indices does not support this inference. Using the blazar Mkn 421 as a case study, we performed a detailed analysis of its characteristic photon energy where the spectral index changes significantly. We used the observations of the source by Swift-XRT from 2008 to 2019 to identify the characteristic photon energy and the corresponding spectral indices. The spectra in the energy range 0.3-10.0 keV can be well fitted by a log parabola as well as a smooth broken power-law. From the smooth broken power-law spectral fit we show that the spectral indices before and after the characteristic photon energy are strongly anti-correlated. Further, the spectral curvature measured at the characteristic photon energy indicates an anti-correlation with the low energy spectral index while the high energy spectral index shows a positive correlation. These findings are at variance with a simple radiative loss interpretation for the characteristic photon energy, and alternative scenarios are thus discussed. Though these scenarios are in principle capable of reproducing the correlation results, they deviate significantly from the observed properties., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS

The convex (concave upward) high-energy X-ray spectra of the blazar PKS\,2155-304, observed by \emph{XMM-Newton}, is interpreted as the signature of sub-dominant inverse Compton emission. The spectra can be well fitted by a superposition of two power-law contributions which imitate the emission due to synchrotron and inverse Compton processes. The methodology adopted enables us to constrain the photon energy down to a level where inverse Compton emission begins to contribute. We show that this information supplemented with knowledge of the jet Doppler factor and magnetic field strength can be used to constrain the low-energy cutoff $\gamma_{\rm min}m_{\rm e} c^2$ of the radiating electron distribution and the kinetic power $P_{\rm j}$ of the jet. We deduce these quantities through a statistical fitting of the broadband spectral energy distribution of PKS\,2155-304 assuming synchrotron and synchrotron self Compton emission mechanisms. Our results favour a minimum Lorentz factor for the non-thermal electron distribution of $\gamma_{\rm min} \gtrsim 60$, with a preference for a value around $\gamma_{\rm min} \simeq 330$. The required kinetic jet power is of the order of $P_{\rm j} \sim 3\times 10^{45}$ erg s$^{-1}$ in case of a heavy, electron-proton dominated jet, and could be up to an order of magnitude less in case of a light, electron-positron dominated jet. X-ray observations of kilo-parsec scale jets indicate that a synchrotron origin of the sustained non-thermal emission is likely. This requires distributed acceleration of electrons up to near PeV energies along the jet. The underlying acceleration mechanism is still unclear. Shear acceleration is a promising candidate, as velocity-shear stratification is a natural consequence of the collimated flow of a jet. We study the details of shear acceleration by solving the steady-state Fokker-Planck-type equation and provide a simple general solution for trans-relativistic jets for a range of magnetohydrodynamic turbulent power-law spectra. In general, the accelerated particle population is a power-law spectrum with an exponential-like cut-off, where the power-law index is determined by the turbulence spectrum and the balance of escape and acceleration of particles. Adopting a simple linearly decreasing velocity profile in the boundary of large-scale jets, we find that the multi-wavelength spectral energy distribution of X-ray jets, such as Centaurus A and 3C 273, can be reproduced with electrons that are accelerated up to $\sim$ PeV. In kpc-scale jets, protons may be accelerated up to $\sim$ EeV, supporting the hypothesis that large-scale jets are strong candidates for ultra-high-energy-cosmic-ray sources within the framework of shear acceleration., Comment: 9 pages, 3 figures, 1 table, accepted to MNRAS

We explore constraints imposed by shear-driven instabilities on the acceleration of energetic particles in relativistic shearing flows. We show that shearing layers in large-scale AGN jets are likely to encompass a sizeable fraction ($\geq 0.1$) of the jet radius, requiring seed injection of GeV electrons for efficient acceleration. While the diffusion process may depend on pre-developed turbulence if injection occurs at higher energies, electron acceleration to PeV and proton acceleration to EeV energies appears possible within the constraints imposed by jet stability., Comment: 6 pages, 2 figures; ApJL to appear

The power spectral density (PSD) represents a key property quantifying the stochastic or random noise type fluctuations in variable sources like Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN). In recent years, estimates of the PSD have been refined by improvements in both, the quality of observed lightcurves and modeling them with simulations. This has aided in quantifying the variability including evaluating the significance of quasi-periodic oscillations. A central assumption in making such estimates is that of weak non-stationarity. This is violated for sources with a power-law PSD index steeper than one as the integral power diverges. As a consequence, estimates of the flux probability density function (PDF) and PSD are interlinked. In general, for evaluating parameters of both properties from lightcurves, one cannot avoid a multi-dimensional, multi-parameter model which is complex and computationally expensive, as well as harder to constrain and interpret. However, if we only wish to compute the PSD index as is often the case, we can use a simpler model. We explore a bending power-law model instead of a simple power-law as input to time-series simulations to test the quality of reconstruction. Examining the longterm variability of the classical blazar Mrk 421, extending to multiple years as is typical of Fermi-LAT or Swift-BAT lightcurves, we find that a transition from pink (PSD index one) to white noise at a characteristic timescale, $t_b \sim 500-1000$ years, comparable to the viscous timescale at the disk truncation radius, seems to provide a good model for simulations. Sagittarius A* (Sgr A*) is a potential VHE gamma-ray and cosmic-ray source. We examine limits to gap-type particle acceleration in the magnetosphere of Sgr A*, showing that in the current phase of activity proton acceleration to PeV energies is possible, with injection powers into the environment usually limited to several 10^{36} erg/s. Compton upscattering of ambient soft photons by gap-accelerated electrons could yield TeV emission compatible with the detected VHE points source. We explore the dependency of the results on changes in the accretion rate showing that higher stages in the past are unlikely to increase the power output unless the inner accretion flows itself changed its configuration., Comment: Accepted for Publication in ApJL

The detection of rapidly variable gamma-ray emission in active galactic nuclei has generated renewed interest in magnetospheric particle acceleration and emission scenarios. In order to explore its potential, we study the possibility of steady gap acceleration around the null surface of a rotating black hole magnetosphere. We employ a simplified (1D) description along with the general relativistic expression of Gauss's law, and we assume that the gap is embedded in the radiation field of a radiatively inefficient accretion flow. The model is used to derive expressions for the radial distribution of the parallel electric field component, the electron and positron charge density, the particle Lorentz factor, and the number density of $\gamma$-ray photons. We integrate the set of equations numerically, imposing suitable boundary conditions. The results show that the existence of a steady gap solution for a relative high value of the global current is in principle possible if charge injection of both species is allowed at the boundaries. We present gap solutions for different choices of the global current and the accretion rate. We examine limits to the efficiency for particles acceleration in shearing flows, showing that relativistic flow speeds are required for efficient gradual shear acceleration. We estimate maximum achievable particle energies for parameters applicable to relativistic AGN jets. The implications of our estimates is that if large-scale jets are relativistic, then efficient electron acceleration up to several PeV, and proton acceleration up to several EeV energies appears feasible. Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) and their relativistic jets are believed to be potential sites of ultra-high-energy (UHE) cosmic ray acceleration. This paper reviews basic observational findings as well as requirements on source energetics, and then discusses the relevance of different acceleration sites and mechanisms, such as black hole gap, shock in back-flows or jet shear acceleration. When put in context, the result suggests that Fermi-type particle acceleration at trans-relativistic shocks and/or in shearing, relativistic flows offers the most promising framework for UHECR production in AGN. Shear flows are ubiquitously present in space and astrophysical plasmas. This paper highlights the central idea of the non-thermal acceleration of charged particles in shearing flows and reviews some of the recent developments. Topics include the acceleration of charged particles by microscopic instabilities in collisionless relativistic shear flows, Fermi-type particle acceleration in macroscopic, gradual and non-gradual shear flows, as well as shear particle acceleration by large-scale velocity turbulence. When put in the context of jetted astrophysical sources such as Active Galactic Nuclei, the results illustrate a variety of means beyond conventional diffusive shock acceleration by which power-law like particle distributions might be generated. The last few years have seen gamma-ray astronomy maturing and advancing in the field of time-domain astronomy, utilizing source variability on timescales over many orders of magnitudes, from a decade down to a few minutes and shorter, depending on the source. This review focuses on some of the key science issues and conceptual developments concerning the timing characteristics of active galactic nuclei (AGN) at gamma-ray energies. Radio Galaxies have by now emerged as a new $\gamma$-ray emitting source class on the extragalactic sky. Given their remarkable observed characteristics, such as unusual gamma-ray spectra or ultrafast VHE variability, they represent unique examples to probe into the nature and physics of AGN in general. This review provides a compact summary of their observed characteristics at very high $\gamma$-ray energies (VHE; $> 100$ GeV) along with a discussion of their possible physics implications. Context.In recent years, non-blazar Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) such as Radio Galaxies have emerged as a highly instructive source class providing unique insights into high energy acceleration and radiation mechanisms. Aims.Here we aim at a detailed characterization of the high-energy (HE;>100 MeV) gamma-ray emission from the prominent radio galaxy M87. Methods.We analyze 8 years of Fermi-LAT data and derive the spectral energy distribution between 100 MeV and 300 GeV. We extract lightcurves and investigate the variability behaviour for the entire energy range as well as below and above 10 GeV. Results.Our analysis provides (i)evidence for HE gamma-ray flux variability and (ii)indications for a possible excess over the standard power-law model above Eb~10 GeV, similar to the earlier indications in the case of Cen A. When viewed in HE-VHE context, this is most naturally explained by an additional component dominating the highest-energy part of the spectrum. Investigation of the gamma-ray lightcurves suggests that the lower-energy (<10 GeV) component is variable on timescales of (at least) a few months. The statistics of the high energy component (>10 GeV) does not allow significant constraints on variability. We find indications, however, for spectral changes with time that support variability of the putative additional component and seem to favor jet-related scenarios for its origin capable of accommodating month-type variability. Conclusions.The current findings suggest that both the high-energy (> Eb) and the very high energy (VHE;>100 GeV) emission in M87 are compatible with originating from the same physical component. The variability behaviour at VHE then allows further constraints on the location and the nature of the second component. The X-ray emission from the jets in Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) carries important information on the distributions of relativistic electrons and magnetic fields on large scales. We reanalyze archival Chandra observations on the jet of M87 from 2000 to 2016 with a total exposure of 1460 kiloseconds to explore the X-ray emission characteristics along the jet. We investigate the variability behaviours of the nucleus and the inner jet component HST-1, and confirm indications for day-scale X-ray variability in the nucleus contemporaneous to the 2010 high TeV gamma-ray state. HST-1 shows a general decline in X-ray flux over the last few years consistent with its synchrotron interpretation. We extract the X-ray spectra for the nucleus and all knots in the jet, showing that they are compatible with a single power-law within the X-ray band. There are indications of the resultant X-ray photon index to exhibit a trend, with slight but significant index variations ranging from $\simeq 2.2$ (e.g. in knot D) to $\simeq 2.4-2.6$ (in the outer knots F, A, and B). When viewed in a multi-wavelength context, a more complex situation is arising. Fitting the radio to X-ray spectral energy distributions (SEDs) assuming a synchrotron origin, we show that a broken power-law electron spectrum with break energy $E_b$ around $1~(300\mu G/B)^{1/2}$ TeV allows a satisfactorily description of the multi-band SEDs for most of the knots. However, in the case of knots B, C and D we find indications that an additional high energy component is needed to adequately reproduce the broadband SEDs. Non-thermal magnetospheric processes in the vicinity of supermassive black holes have attracted particular attention in recent times. Gap-type particle acceleration accompanied by curvature and Inverse Compton radiation could in principle lead to variable gamma-ray emission that may be detectable with current instruments. We shortly comment on the occurrence of magnetospheric gaps and the realisation of different potentials. The detection of rapid variability becomes most instructive by imposing a constraint on possible gap sizes, thereby limiting extractable gap powers and allowing to assess the plausibility of a magnetospheric origin. The relevance of this is discussed for the radio galaxies Cen A, M87 and IC310. The rapidly variable, very high-energy (VHE) gamma-ray emission from Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) has been frequently associated with non-thermal processes occurring in the magnetospheres of their supermassive black holes. The present work aims to explore the adequacy of different gap-type (unscreened electric field) models to account for the observed characteristics. Based on a phenomenological description of the gap potential, we estimate the maximum extractable gap power $L_{gap}$ for different magnetospheric set-ups, and study its dependence on the accretion state of the source. $L_{gap}$ is found to be in general proportional to the Blandford-Znajek jet power $L_{BZ}$ and a sensitive function of gap size $h$, i.e. $L_{gap} \sim L_{BZ} (h/r_g)^{\beta}$, where the power index $\beta \geq 1$ is dependent on the respective gap-setup. The transparency of the black hole vicinity to VHE photons generally requires a radiatively inefficient accretion environment and thereby imposes constraints on possible accretion rates, and correspondingly on $L_{BZ}$. Similarly, rapid variability, if observed, may allow to constrain the gap size $h\sim c \Delta t$. Combining these constraints, we provide a general classification to assess the likelihood that the VHE gamma-ray emission observed from an AGN can be attributed to a magnetospheric origin. When applied to prominent candidate sources these considerations suggest that the variable (day-scale) VHE activity seen in the radio galaxy M87 could be compatible with a magnetospheric origin, while such an origin appears less likely for the (minute-scale) VHE activity in IC310., Comment: 13 pages, 2 figures, ApJ in press

Non-blazar Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) have emerged as a new gamma-ray emitting source class on the extragalactic sky and started to deepen our understanding of the physical processes and the nature of AGN in general. The detection of Narrow Line Seyfert 1 galaxies in the Fermi-LAT energy regime, for example, offers important information for our understanding of jet formation and radio-loudness. Radio galaxies, on the other hand, have become particularly interesting at high (HE) and very high (VHE) gamma-ray energies. With their jets not directly pointing towards us (i.e. misaligned), they offer a unique tool to probe into the nature of the fundamental (and often hidden) physical processes in AGN. A major flaring state of the BL Lac object Mrk 501 was observed by the High Energy Stereoscopic System (H.E.S.S.) in June, 2014. Flux levels higher than one Crab unit were recorded and rapid variability at very high energies ($\sim$2-20 TeV) was revealed. The high statistics afforded by the flares allowed us to probe the presence of minutes timescale variability and study its statistical characteristics exclusively at TeV energies owing to the high energy threshold of approximately 2 TeV. Doubling times of a few minutes are estimated for fluxes greater than 2 TeV. Statistical tests on the light curves show interesting temporal structure in the variations including deviations from a normal flux distribution similar to those found in the PKS 2155-304 flare of July 2006, at nearly an order of magnitude higher threshold energy. Observations at Very High Energies (VHE, E > 100 GeV) of the BL Lac object Mrk 501 taken with the High Energy Stereoscopic System (H.E.S.S.) in four distinct periods between 2004 and 2014 are presented, with focus on the 2012 and 2014 flaring states. The source is detected with high significance above $\sim$ 2 TeV in $\sim$ 13.1 h livetime. The observations comprise low flux states and strong flaring events, which in 2014 show a flux level comparable to the 1997 historical maximum. Such high flux states enable spectral variability and flux variability studies down to a timescale of four minutes in the 2-20 TeV energy range. During the 2014 flare, the source is clearly detected in each of these bins. The intrinsic spectrum is well described by a power law of index $\Gamma=2.15\pm0.06$ and does not show curvature in this energy range. Flux dependent spectral analyses show a clear harder-when-brighter behaviour. The high flux levels and the high sensitivity of H.E.S.S. allow studies in the unprecedented combination of short timescales and an energy coverage that extends significantly above 20 TeV. The high energies allow us to probe the effect of EBL absorption at low redshifts, jet physics and LIV. Time variability of the photon flux is a known feature of active galactic nuclei (AGN) and in particular of blazars. The high frequency peaked BL Lac (HBL) object PKS 2155-304 is one of the brightest sources in the TeV band and has been monitored regularly with different instruments and in particular with the H.E.S.S. experiment above 200 GeV for more than 11 years. These data together with the observations of other instruments and monitoring programs like SMARTS (optical), Swift-XRT/RXTE/XMM-Newton (X-ray) and Fermi-LAT (100 MeV < E < 300 GeV) are used to characterize the variability of this object in the quiescent state over a wide energy range. Variability studies are made by looking at the lognormality of the light curves and at the fractional root mean square (rms) variability Fvar in several energy bands. Radio galaxies have emerged as a new gamma-ray emitting source class on the extragalactic sky. With their jets misaligned, i.e. not directly pointing towards us, they offer a unique tool to probe some of the fundamental (and otherwise hidden) non-thermal processes in AGN. This contribution briefly summarizes the observed characteristics of the four radio galaxies detected so far at very high energies (VHE). Given its prominence, particular attention is given to the origin of the variable VHE emission in M87. Recent high-sensitivity observation of the nearby radio galaxy M87 have provided important insights into the central engine that drives the large-scale outflows seen in radio, optical and X-rays. The detection of high energy (HE) {\gamma}-ray emission up to about 3 GeV from the giant lobes of the radio galaxy Centaurus A has been recently reported by the Fermi-LAT Collaboration based on ten months of all-sky survey observations. A data set more than three times larger is used here to study the morphology and photon spectrum of the lobes with higher statistics. The larger data set results in the detection of HE {\gamma}-ray emission (up to about 6 GeV) from the lobes with a significance of more than 10 and 20 {\sigma} for the North and the South lobe, respectively. Based on a detailed spatial analysis and comparison with the associated radio lobes, we report evidence for a substantial extension of the HE {\gamma}-ray emission beyond the WMAP radio image in the case of the Northern lobe of Cen A. We reconstruct the spectral energy distribution (SED) of the lobes using radio (WMAP) and Fermi-LAT data from the same integration region. The implications are discussed in the context of hadronic and leptonic scenarios.

The environs of supermassive black holes are among the universe's most extreme phenomena. Understanding the physical processes occurring in the vicinity of black holes may provide the key to answer a number of fundamental astrophysical questions including the detectability of strong gravity effects, the formation and propagation of relativistic jets, the origin of the highest energy gamma-rays and cosmic-rays, and the nature and evolution of the central engine in Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN). As a step towards this direction, this paper reviews some of the progress achieved in the field based on observations in the very high energy domain. It particularly focuses on non-thermal particle acceleration and emission processes that may occur in the rotating magnetospheres originating from accreting, supermassive black hole systems. Topics covered include direct electric field acceleration in the black hole's magnetosphere, ultra-high energy cosmic ray production, Blandford-Znajek mechanism, centrifugal acceleration and magnetic reconnection, along with the relevant efficiency constraints imposed by interactions with matter, radiation and fields. Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) are known to show significant variability over a wide frequency range. We review observational results on the variability characteristics of blazars in the very high energy (VHE) domain, focusing on recent findings of rapid VHE variability and evidence for an underlying multiplicative driving process in PKS 2155-304. We explore a physical scenario where the variability is assumed to arise due to accretion disk fluctuations transmitted to the jet, and discuss its implications for the central powerhouse., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures. It is proposed that the variable TeV emission observed in M87 may be produced in a starved magnetospheric region, above which the outflow associated with the VLBA jet is established. It is shown that annihilation of MeV photons emitted by the radiative inefficient flow in the vicinity of the black hole, can lead to injection of seed charges on open magnetic field lines, with a density that depends sensitively on accretion rate, $n_\pm\propto\dot{m}^{4}$. For an accretion rate that corresponds to the inferred jet power, and to a fit of the observed SED by an ADAF model, the density of injected pairs is found to be smaller than the Goldreich-Julian density by a factor of a few. It is also shown that inverse Compton scattering of ambient photons by electrons (positrons) accelerating in the gap can lead to a large multiplicity, $\sim 10^3$, while still allowing photons at energies of up to a few TeV to freely escape the system. The estimated gap width is not smaller than $0.01 r_s$ if the density of seed charges is below the Goldreich-Julian value. The VHE power radiated by the gap can easily account for the luminosity of the TeV source detected by H.E.S.S. The strong dependence of injected pair density on accretion rate should render the gap emission highly intermittent. Context: The $\gamma$-ray blazar PKS 2155-304 has attracted considerable attention because of its extreme TeV variability characteristics during an exceptional flaring period in 2006. Among the observed key findings are (i) a minimum variability timescale as short as $\sim 200$ sec and (ii) highly variable TeV emission, which in the frequency interval [$10^{-4}$ Hz, $10^{-2}$ Hz] can be described by a log-normal distribution and suggests an underlying multiplicative (and not additive) process. Aims: Simultaneously accounting for these findings appears difficult within conventional approaches. Following earlier suggestions for the TeV blazar Mkn 501, we explore a possible scenario where PKS 2155-304 is supposed to harbor a supermassive binary black hole system and where the observed TeV variability is dominated by emission from the less massive black hole. Methods: We analyze the constraints on the very high energy (VHE) source imposed by the observed variability characteristics and the integrated VHE luminosity output, and discuss its implications for a binary black hole system. Results: We show that for a secondary mass of $m_{\rm BH} \sim 10^7 M_{\odot}$, fluctuations in the disk accretion rate that feed the jet could account for the observed red-noise type variability process down to frequencies of $\sim 10^{-2}$ Hz. Jet curvature induced by orbital motion, on the other hand, could further relax constraints on the intrinsic jet speeds. Conclusions: Because a binary system can lead to different (yet not independent) periodicities in different energy bands, a longterm (quasi-) periodicity analysis could offer important insights into the real nature of the central engine of PKS~2155-304., Comment: 5 pages, 1 figure; A&A in press

We discuss a representative selection of particle acceleration mechanisms believed to be operating in Active Galactic Nuclei. Starting from direct electrostatic field acceleration in the vicinity of the black hole up to Fermi-type particle acceleration in the jet and beyond, possible efficiency constraints on the energization of ultra-high energy cosmic rays (UHECR) are evaluated. When paradigmatically applied to Cen A, the following results are obtained: (i) Proton acceleration to energies of $E_c = 5\times 10^{19}$ eV and beyond remains challenging and most likely requires the operation of an additional mechanism capable of boosting energetic seed protons up by a factor of $\sim$ten. It is argued that shear acceleration along the large-scale jet in Cen A could be a promising candidate for this. (ii) Heavier elements, like iron nuclei, are more easily accelerated (by, e.g., shocks or direct electrostatic fields) and may not need additional boosting to reach $E \geq E_c$; (iii) If Cen A indeed proves to be an UHECR source, the cosmic ray composition might thus be expected to become heavier above energies of a few times $10^{19}$ eV., Comment: 8 pages, one figure; based on invited talk at the JEM-EUSO Workshop, Torino/Italy, December 2008. The origin of very energetic charged particles and the production of very high-energy (VHE) gamma-ray emission remains still a challenging issue in modern pulsar physics. By applying a toy model, we explore the acceleration of co-rotating charged particles close to the light surface in a plasma-rich pulsar magnetosphere and study their interactions with magnetic and photon fields under conditions appropriate for Crab-type pulsars. Centrifugal acceleration of particles in a monopol-like magnetic field geometry is analyzed and the efficiency constraints, imposed by corotation, inverse Compton interactions and curvature radiation reaction are determined. We derive expressions for the maximum particle energy and provide estimates for the corresponding high-energy curvature and inverse Compton power outputs. It is shown that for Crab-like pulsars, electron Lorentz factor up to $\gamma \sim 10^7$ can be achieved, allowing inverse Compton (Klein-Nishina) up-scattering of thermal photons to TeV energies with a maximum luminosity output of $\sim10^{31}$ erg/s. Curvature radiation, on the other hand, will result in a strong GeV emission output of up to $\sim(10^{34}-10^{35})$ erg/s, quasi-exponentially decreasing towards higher energies for photon energies below $\sim 50$ GeV. Supermassive binary black holes (SBBHs) are a natural outcome of galaxy mergers. Here we show that low-frequency ($f \leq 10^{-6}$ Hz) quasi-periodic variability observed from cosmic blazar sources can provide substantial inductive support for the presence of close ($d \lppr 0.1$ pc) SBBHs at their centers. It is argued on physical grounds that such close binary systems are likely to give rise to different (although not independent) periodicities in the radio, optical and X-ray/TeV regime, and, hence that detection of appropriate period ratios significantly corroborates the SBBH interpretation. This is illustrated for a binary model where optical longterm periodicity is related to accretion disk interactions, radio periodicity to Newtonian jet precession, and periodicities in the high energy bands to the orbital motion of the jet. A microscopic analysis of the viscous energy gain of energetic particles in (gradual) non-relativistic shear flows is presented. We extend previous work and derive the Fokker-Planck coefficients for the average rate of momentum change and dispersion in the general case of a momentum-dependent scattering time $\tau(p) \propto p^{\alpha}$ with $\alpha \geq 0$. We show that in contrast to diffusive shock acceleration the characteristic shear acceleration timescale depends inversely on the particle mean free path which makes the mechanism particularly attractive for high energy seed particles. Based on an analysis of the associated Fokker-Planck equation we show that above the injection momentum $p_0$ power-law differential particle number density spectra $n(p) \propto p^{-(1+ \alpha)}$ are generated for $\alpha >0$ if radiative energy losses are negligible. We discuss the modifications introduced by synchrotron losses and determine the contribution of the accelerated particles to the viscosity of the background flow. Gradual shear acceleration of energetic particles in gamma-ray burst (GRB) jets is considered. Special emphasis is given to the analysis of universal structured jets, and characteristic acceleration timescales are determined for a power-law and a Gaussian evolution of the bulk flow Lorentz factor $\gamma_b$ with angle $\phi$ from the jet axis. The results suggest that local power-law particle distributions may be generated and that higher energy particles are generally concentrated closer to the jet axis. Taking several constraints into account we show that efficient electron acceleration in gradual shear flows, with maximum particle energy successively decreasing with time, may be possible on scales larger than $r \sim 10^{15}$ cm, provided the jet magnetic field becomes sufficiently weak and/or decreases rapidly enough with distance, while efficient acceleration of protons to ultra-high energies $> 10^{20}$ eV may be possible under a wide range of conditions., Comment: 11 pages, 3 figures; ApJ Letters accepted; final version: small typos corrected in order to match published version

We consider the periodic modulation of emission from jets in blazar-type sources. A differential Doppler boosting origin, associated with the helical motion of a radiating component, is analyzed for different periodic driving sources including orbital motion and jet precession in a binary black hole system (BBHS). We emphasize that for non-ballistic helical motion classical travel time effects can lead to strong shortening effects, such that the observed period may be a factor $\gamma_b^2$ smaller than the underlying driving period, where $\gamma_b$ denotes the bulk Lorentz factor of the jet flow. We review the acceleration of energetic particles in relativistic astrophysical jets characterized by a significant velocity shear. The possible formation of power-law momentum spectra is discussed and typical acceleration timescales are determined for a variety of different conditions such as parallel and azimuthal shear flows. Special attendance is given to the analysis of parallel shear flows with either a linear decreasing or a Gaussian-type velocity profile. It is shown that in the presence of a gradual shear flow and a particle mean free path scaling with the gyroradius, synchrotron radiation losses may no longer be able to stop the acceleration once it has started to work efficiently. We consider the acceleration of particles due to a velocity shear in relativistic astrophysical flows. The basic physical picture and the formation of power law momentum spectra is discussed for a non-relativistic velocity field using a microscopic approach. We identify possible sites for shear acceleration in relativistic astrophysical jets and analyze their associated acceleration timescales. It is shown in particular that for a mean scattering time $\tau$ scaling with the gyro-radius, the acceleration timescale for gradual shear scales in the same manner as the synchrotron cooling timescale, so that losses may no longer be able to stop the acceleration once it has started to work efficiently. Recent observations and analysis of blazar sources provide strong evidence for (i) the presence of significant periodicities in their lightcurves and (ii) the occurrence of helical trajectories in their radio jets. In scenarios, where the periodicity is caused by differential Doppler boosting effects along a helical jet path, both of these facts may be naturally tied together. Here we discuss four possible driving mechanisms for the occurrence of helical trajectories: orbital motion in a binary system, Newtonian-driven jet precession, internal jet rotation and motion along a global helical magnetic field. We point out that for non-ballistic helical motion the observed period may appear strongly shortened due to classical travel time effects. We consider the acceleration of energetic particles by a velocity shear in the relativistic background flow containing scattering centers. Three possible acceleration sites for astrophysical jets are identified: (1) gradual velocity shear parallel to the jet axis, such as a velocity profile decreasing linearly outward with radial coordinate, (2) gradual velocity shear perpendicular to the jet axis, such as intrinsic jet rotation, and (3) non-gradual/discontinuous, longitudinal velocity shear at the jet-side boundary. We determine the characteristic acceleration timescales, specify the conditions for efficient acceleration and discuss observational features with respect to each process.
