Abstract

Deep Reinforcement Learning (DRL) methods often rely on the meticulous tuning of hyperparameters to successfully resolve problems. One of the most influential parameters in optimization procedures based on stochastic gradient descent (SGD) is the learning rate. We investigate cyclical learning and propose a method for defining a general cyclical learning rate for various DRL problems. In this paper we present a method for cyclical learning applied to complex DRL problems. Our experiments show that, utilizing cyclical learning achieves similar or even better results than highly tuned fixed learning rates. This paper presents the first application of cyclical learning rates in DRL settings and is a step towards overcoming manual hyperparameter tuning.

Abstract

Vibration compensation is important for many domains. For the machine tool industry it translates to higher machining precision and longer component lifetime. Current methods for vibration damping have their shortcomings (e.g. need for accurate dynamic models). In this paper we present a reinforcement learning based approach to vibration compensation applied to a machine tool axis. The work describes the problem formulation, the solution, the implementation and experiments using industrial machine tool hardware and control system.

Abstract

Customer demands force manufacturing companies to offer individualised products to remain competitive. This results in a demand for flexibility and adaptability in product development and production, which causes a rise in complexity. Simultaneously, manufacturers strive to further automatise production and assembly lines to increase cost efficiency and optimise output. This leads to a conflict of interest between two different approaches, 'streamlined and cost-efficient' or 'individualised and costly'. Software-Defined Manufacturing (SDM) is a new approach that seeks to reconcile these diametrical goals by increasing the adaptability of automated manufacturing. This is achieved by virtualising key functionalities of production machines, which permit the configuration of system functionality via software. With current production equipment, this is difficult, because it was designed for a specific process and because there is no meaningful separation between the executing physical part of the machine and the controlling software. This article presents a new method for the development of SDM-ready production machines and processes. The application of the method on a production use-case demonstrates its usefulness in the improvement of existing production facilities and processes. It further addresses the wider trend of Software-Defined Anything (SDx) and outlines the role SDM could play on the pathway towards autonomous manufacturing. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Die zunehmende Digitalisierung und Autonomisierung der Logistik führen zu einem grundlegenden Wandel für die Mitarbeitenden und ihre Aufgaben. Hierfür müssen Qualifizierungsstrategien entwickelt werden, welche Kompetenzanforderungen beinhalten. Die Arbeit stellt eine Methode für das Kompetenzmanagement dar. Basierend auf einer tätigkeitsorientierten Beschreibung der Logistikprozesse und einem Kompetenzmodell für die operativen und dispositiven Tätigkeiten erfolgt die Ermittlung von Kompetenzanforderungen sowie die Ableitung von Qualifizierungsbedarfen., The increasing digitalization and autonomization of logistics are leading to a fundamental change for employees and their tasks. Qualification strategies must be developed for this, which include competency requirements. The work presents a method for competency management. Based on a task-oriented description of the logistics processes and a competency model for the operative and dispositive jobs, the determination of competency requirements as well as the derivation of qualification needs is realized.

Abstract

Introduction: Family history of depression and childhood maltreatment are established risk factors for depression. However, how these factors are interrelated and jointly influence depression risk is not well understood. The present study investigated (i) if childhood maltreatment is associated with a family history of depression (ii) if family history and childhood maltreatment are associated with increased lifetime and current depression, and whether both factors interact beyond their main effects, and (iii) if family history affects lifetime and current depression via childhood maltreatment. Methods: Analyses were based on a subgroup of the first 100,000 participants of the German National Cohort (NAKO), with complete information (58,703 participants, mean age"="51.2 years, 53% female). Parental family history of depression was assessed via self-report, childhood maltreatment with the Childhood Trauma Screener (CTS), lifetime depression with self-reported physician's diagnosis and the Mini-International Neuropsychiatric Interview (MINI), and current depressive symptoms with the depression scale of the Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9). Generalized linear models were used to test main and interaction effects. Mediation was tested using causal mediation analyses. Results: Higher frequencies of the childhood maltreatment measures were found in subjects reporting a positive family history of depression. Family history and childhood maltreatment were independently associated with increased depression. No statistical interactions of family history and childhood maltreatment were found for the lifetime depression measures. For current depressive symptoms (PHQ-9 sum score), an interaction was found, with stronger associations of childhood maltreatment and depression in subjects with a positive family history. Childhood maltreatment was estimated to mediate 7%-12% of the effect of family history on depression, with higher mediated proportions in subjects whose parents had a depression onset below 40 years. Abuse showed stronger associations with family history and depression, and higher mediated proportions of family history effects on depression than neglect. Discussion: The present study confirms the association of childhood maltreatment and family history with depression in a large population-based cohort. While analyses provide little evidence for the joint effects of both risk factors on depression beyond their individual effects, results are consistent with family history affecting depression via childhood maltreatment to a small extent.
