Intermediate mass black holes (10^2 < M_BH< 10^5 Msun) are an open question in our understanding of black hole evolution and growth. They have long been linked to dense star cluster environments thanks to cluster dynamics, but there are a limited number of secure detections. We leverage existing X-ray observations from Chandra X-ray Observatory and optical catalogs from Hubble Space Telescope with new radio observations from the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array to search for any evidence of accreting black holes in young massive clusters in the nearby galaxy M51. We find that of 43 bright ($L_X > 10^{38}$ erg/s) X-ray point sources in M51, 24 had probable matches to objects including possible associated star clusters in the HST Legacy Extragalactic UV Survey catalog, seven of which were classified as contaminants (background galaxies or foreground stars). We explore the optical properties of the remaining 17 sources, including cluster age and mass estimates, and search for radio counterparts in the 8-12 GHz band. The lack of radio counterparts to X-ray sources we know to be associated with young massive clusters in M51 suggests that we do not significantly detect hard-state IMBHs ~ 10^4 Msun or above. Echocardiography is the most widely used imaging to monitor cardiac functions, serving as the first line in early detection of myocardial ischemia and infarction. However, echocardiography often suffers from several artifacts including sensor noise, lack of contrast, severe saturation, and missing myocardial segments which severely limit its usage in clinical diagnosis. In recent years, several machine learning methods have been proposed to improve echocardiography views. Yet, these methods usually address only a specific problem (e.g. denoising) and thus cannot provide a robust and reliable restoration in general. On the other hand, cardiac MRI provides a clean view of the heart without suffering such severe issues. However, due to its significantly higher cost, it is often only afforded by a few major hospitals, hence hindering its use and accessibility. In this pilot study, we propose a novel approach to transform echocardiography into the cardiac MRI view. For this purpose, Echo2MRI dataset, consisting of echocardiography and real cardiac MRI image pairs, is composed and will be shared publicly. A dedicated Cycle-consistent Generative Adversarial Network (Cycle-GAN) is trained to learn the transformation from echocardiography frames to cardiac MRI views. An extensive set of qualitative evaluations shows that the proposed transformer can synthesize high-quality artifact-free synthetic cardiac MRI views from a given sequence of echocardiography frames. Medical evaluations performed by a group of cardiologists further demonstrate that synthetic MRI views are indistinguishable from their original counterparts and are preferred over their initial sequence of echocardiography frames for diagnosis in 78.9% of the cases., Comment: 18 pages, 42 figures

The success of modern deep learning is attributed to two key elements: huge amounts of training data and large model sizes. Where a vast amount of data allows the model to learn more features, the large model architecture boosts the learning capability of the model. However, both these factors result in prolonged training time. In some practical applications such as edge-based learning and federated learning, limited-time budgets necessitate more efficient training methods. This paper proposes an effective technique for training arbitrary deep learning models within fixed time constraints utilizing sample importance and dynamic ranking. The proposed method is extensively evaluated in both classification and regression tasks in computer vision. The results consistently show clear gains achieved by the proposed method in improving the learning performance of various state-of-the-art deep learning models in both regression and classification tasks.

The non-stoichiometric Fe$_2$P-type (FeMnP$_{0.5}$Si$_{0.5}$)$_{1-x}$(FeV)$_{x}$ alloys ( $x=0, 0.01$, $0.02$, and $0.03$) have been investigated as potential candidates for magnetic refrigeration near room temperature. The magnetic ordering temperature decreases with increasing FeV concentration, $x$, which can be ascribed to decreased ferromagnetic coupling strength between the magnetic atoms. The strong magnetoelastic coupling in these alloys results in large values of the isothermal entropy change ($\Delta S_M$); $15.7$ J/kgK, at $2$ T magnetic field for the $x = 0$ alloy. $\Delta S_M$ decreases with increasing $x$. Results from M{\"o}ssbauer spectroscopy reveal that the average hyperfine field (in the ferromagnetic state) and average center shift (in the paramagnetic state) have the same decreasing trend as $\Delta S_M$. The thermal hysteresis ($\Delta T_{hyst}$) of the magnetic phase transition decreases with increasing $x$, while the mechanical stability of the alloys improves due to the reduced lattice volume change across the magnetoelastic phase transition. The adiabatic temperature change $\Delta T_{ad}$, which highly depends on $\Delta T_{hyst}$, is $1.7$ K at $1.9$ T applied field for the $x = 0.02$ alloy.

Citizen science offers an opportunity for ordinary people, known as citizen scientists or citizen astronomers in the context of astronomy, to contribute to scientific research. The Pan-African Citizen Science e-Lab (PACS e-Lab) was founded to promote and engage the African public in citizen science and soft astronomy research to advance space research and exploration and enhance space education and outreach. PACS e-Lab, in collaboration with several international astronomy research, education, and outreach organizations, currently runs several projects including but not limited to asteroid search, exoplanet photometry, research writing for peer-reviewed publications, astrophoto visual development, and Amateur Radio contact with astronauts aboard the International Space Station (ARISS). Despite several challenges, the group has engaged over 600 Africans from more than 40 countries and is working towards covering the entire continent in the future. Asteroid search is a global effort for planetary defense. The International Astronomical Search Collaboration (IASC) is the leading global educational outreach program that provides high-quality astronomical datasets to citizen scientists to discover asteroids. Since December 4, 2020, the Pan-African Citizen Science e-Lab (PACS e-Lab) has been IASC's biggest partner on the continent in recruiting and training citizen scientists in asteroid search endeavors. Over 30 asteroids have been discovered by 60 citizen scientists. About 595 citizen scientists from over 40 countries have been engaged in the project up to the time of composing this literature. The advent of Intelligent Reflecting Surfaces (IRS) and Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) is setting a new benchmark in the field of wireless communications. IRS, with their groundbreaking ability to manipulate electromagnetic waves, have opened avenues for substantial enhancements in signal quality, network efficiency, and spectral usage. These surfaces dynamically reconfigure the propagation environment, leading to optimized signal paths and reduced interference. Concurrently, UAVs have emerged as dynamic, versatile elements within communication networks, offering high mobility and the ability to access and enhance coverage in areas where traditional, fixed infrastructure falls short. This paper presents a comprehensive survey on the synergistic integration of IRS and UAVs in wireless networks, highlighting how this innovative combination substantially boosts network performance, particularly in terms of security, energy efficiency, and reliability. The versatility of UAVs, combined with the signal-manipulating prowess of IRS, creates a potent solution for overcoming the limitations of conventional communication setups, especially in challenging and underserved environments. Furthermore, the survey delves into the cutting-edge realm of Machine Learning (ML), exploring its role in the strategic deployment and operational optimization of UAVs equipped with IRS. The paper also underscores the latest research and practical advancements in this field, providing insights into real-world applications and experimental setups. It concludes by discussing the future prospects and potential directions for this emerging technology, positioning the IRS-UAV integration as a transformative force in the landscape of next-generation wireless

Hallucinations and delusions are often grouped together within the positive symptoms of psychosis. However, recent evidence suggests they may be driven by distinct computational and neural mechanisms. Examining the time course of their emergence may provide insights into the relationship between these underlying mechanisms. Participants from the second (N = 719) and third (N = 699) iterations of the North American Prodrome Longitudinal Study (NAPLS 2 and 3) were assessed for timing of CHR-P-level delusion and hallucination onset. Pre-onset symptom patterns in first-episode psychosis patients (FEP) from the Prevention and Early Intervention Program for Psychosis (PEPP-Montreal; N = 694) were also assessed. Symptom onset was determined at baseline assessment and the evolution of symptom patterns examined over 24 months. In all three samples, participants were more likely to report the onset of delusion-spectrum symptoms prior to hallucination-spectrum symptoms (odds ratios (OR): NAPLS 2 = 4.09; NAPLS 3 = 4.14; PEPP, Z = 7.01, P < 0.001) and to present with only delusions compared to only hallucinations (OR: NAPLS 2 = 5.6; NAPLS 3 = 11.11; PEPP = 42.75). Re-emergence of delusions after remission was also more common than re-emergence of hallucinations (Ps < 0.05), and hallucinations more often resolved first (Ps < 0.001). In both CHR-P samples, ratings of delusional ideation fell with the onset of hallucinations (P = 0.007). Delusions tend to emerge before hallucinations and may play a role in their development. Further work should examine the relationship between the mechanisms driving these symptoms and its utility for diagnosis and treatment.
