Increasing demand for copper resources, accompanied by increasing pollution, has resulted in an urgent need for effective materials for copper binding and extraction. Polyethylenimine (PEI) is one of the strongest copper-chelating agents but is not suitable directly (as is) for most applications due to its high solubility in water. PEI-based composite materials show potential as efficient and practical alternatives. In the present work, the interaction of copper ions with PEI-silica nanocomposite particles and precursor PEI microgels (as a reference) is investigated. It is hypothesized that the main driving force of the reaction is chelation of copper ions by amino groups in the PEI network. The presence of silica in the PEI-silica composites was shown to increase the copper-binding capacity in comparison with the parent microgel. The copper-binding behavior of etched (PEI-free "ghost") composite particles in comparison with the original composites and microgel particles shows that silica nanoparticles in the composite structure increase the number of copper-binding sites in the PEI network rather than adsorbing copper themselves. PEI-silica composites can be easily recycled after copper adsorption by simply washing in 1 M nitric acid, which results in complete copper extraction. Employing this recovery method, PEI-silica composite particles can be used for multiple, efficient cycles of copper removal and extraction.

From atomic force microscopy (AFM) experiments, we report a new phenomenon in which the dissolution rate of fused silica is enhanced by more than 5 orders of magnitude by simply pressing a second, dissimilar surface against it and oscillating the contact pressure at low kHz frequencies in deionized water. The silica dissolution rate enhancement was found to exhibit a strong dependence on the pressure oscillation frequency consistent with a resonance effect. This harmonic enhancement of the silica dissolution rate was only observed at asymmetric material interfaces (e.g., diamond on silica) with no evidence of dissolution rate enhancement observed at symmetric material interfaces (i.e., silica on silica) within the experimental time scales. The apparent requirement for interface dissimilarity, the results of analogous experiments performed in anhydrous dodecane, and the observation that the silica "dissolution pits" continue to grow in size under contact stresses well below the silica yield stress refute a mechanical deformation or chemo-mechanical origin to the observed phenomenon. Instead, the silica dissolution rate enhancement exhibits characteristics consistent with a previously described 'electrochemical pressure solution' mechanism, albeit, with greatly amplified kinetics. Using a framework of electrochemical pressure solution, an electrochemical model of mineral dissolution, and a recently proposed "surface resonance" theory, we present an electro-chemo-mechanical mechanism that explains how oscillating the contact pressure between dissimilar surfaces in water can amplify surface dissolution rates by many orders of magnitude. This reaction rate enhancement mechanism has implications not only for dissolution but also for potentially other reactions occurring at the solid-liquid interface, e.g. catalysis.

A novel procedure for the synthesis of polyethylenimine (PEI)-silica nanocomposite particles with high adsorption capacities has been developed based on an emulsion templating concept. The exceptional chelating properties of PEI as the parent polymer for the particle core promote the binding abilities of the resulting composite for charged species. Further, the subsequent introduction of silica via the self-catalyzed hydrolysis of tetraethoxysilane facilitates production of robust composite particles with smooth surfaces, enabling potential use in multiphase environments. To enable tailored application in solid/liquid porous environments, the production of particles with reduced sizes was attempted by modulating the shear rates and surfactant concentrations during emulsification. The use of high-speed homogenization resulted in a substantial decrease in average particle size, while increasing surfactant loading only had a limited effect. All types of nanocomposites produced demonstrated excellent binding capacities for copper ions as a test solute. The maximum binding capacities of the PEI-silica nanocomposites of 210-250 mg/g are comparable to or exceed those of other copper binding materials, opening up great application potential in resources, chemical processing, and remediation industries.

Mesoporous polydopamine (PDA) nanobowls, which can be prepared using Pluronic® F-127, ammonia, and 1,3,5-trimethylbenzene (TMB), are one of the most studied anisotropic nanoparticle systems. However, only limited reports on polymerised analogues polynorepinephrine (PNE) and polyepinephrine (PEP) exist. Herein, we present modifications to a one-pot, soft template method, originally applied to make PDA nanobowls, to fabricate new shape-anisotropic nanoparticles (mesoporous nanospheres or "nano-golf balls" and nanobowls) using PNE and PEP for the first time. Polymeric particles that combine pH responsiveness and anisotropic morphology are reported, based on cross-linked 2-(diethylamino)ethyl methacrylate (DEA) coated polystyrene (PS) particles, obtained via a seeded polymerization procedure. DEA coating results in a single cavity within the seed particles, providing a cup-shaped final morphology. Two hydrophilic monomers, 2-(dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate (DMA) and allylamine (AAm), are also used to further functionalize the particle surfaces. Through controlled monomer ratios, four pitted particles with different chemical compositions are prepared: DEA, DEA/DMA (two different ratios), and DEA/AAm. Monomer composition precisely tunes the resulting particle morphology, with the ability to change from cup shaped to multicavity. The pH-dependent release properties of the pitted particles are investigated using Rhodamine 6G at pH 6.5 and 7.4. Analysis of drug release kinetics with the Korsmeyer-Peppas model shows the drug release mechanism varies depending on the pH as well as the polymer composition. The biocompatibility of particles is assessed via the MTT cell viability assay.

Hypothesis Morphology of surfactant self-assemblies are governed by the intermolecular interactions and packing constraints of the constituent molecules. Therefore, rational design of surfactant structure should allow targeting of the specific self-assembly modes, such as wormlike micelles (WLMs). By inclusion of an appropriate photo-responsive functionality to a surfactant molecule, light-based control of formulation properties without the need for additives can be achieved. Experiments A novel azobenzene-containing surfactant was synthesised with the intention of producing photo-responsive wormlike micelles. Aggregation of the molecule in its cis and trans isomers, and its concomitant flow properties, were characterised using UV–vis spectroscopy, small-angle neutron scattering, and rheological measurements. Finally, the fluids capacity for mediating particle diffusion was assessed using dynamic light scattering. Findings The trans isomer of the novel azo-surfactant was found to form a viscoelastic WLM network, which transitioned to inviscid ellipsoidal aggregates upon photo-switching to the cis isomer. This was accompanied by changes in zero-shear viscosity up to 16,000 × . UV–vis spectroscopic and rheo-SANS analysis revealed π - π interactions of the trans azobenzene chromophore within the micelles, influencing aggregate structure and contributing to micellar rigidity. Particles dispersed in a 1 wt% surfactant solution showed a fivefold increase in apparent diffusion coefficient after UV-irradiation of the mixture.

While applications of polydopamine (PDA) are exponentially growing, research concerning the closely related neurotransmitter derivative polynorepinephrine (PNE) is in paucity, even though norepinephrine shares dopamine's ability to self-polymerize and form a coating film that is nearly substrate-agnostic. In this review, we demonstrate that PNE can be used as an alternative to PDA with equal or ever superior performance. PNE offers a thinner and smoother coating surface and thus is capable of more effectively resisting fouling by biofoulants, enhancing cell adhesion capability, surface hydrophilicity and biomolecule immobilisation. With the abundance of catechol, amino and hydroxyl groups in PNE's structure, PNE can perform as an electron donor and receiver at the same time and initiate ring opening and redox reactions. It has also been shown that PNE has the potential to be used as a biosensor due to its bioconjugation and molecular recognition ability. Here, we summarise the applications of PNE to date and discuss its potential research directions in the near future.

Recently, carbon dots (CDs) have attracted wide attention for their potential use as fluorescence probes in biological and analytical chemistry due to their great stability and high fluorescence quantum yields. In our work, norepinephrine (NE)-derived CDs with green luminescence and an average size of 10 nm were fabricated using a one-step hydrothermal route. As-prepared CDs show a strong emission at a wavelength of 520 nm when excited at 420 nm, and demonstrate pH and concentration dependent fluorescence behaviour. Multiple functional groups on the CDs allow their protonation/deprotonation and thus alter fluorescence intensity and peak position in different pH conditions. Prepared CDs show significant potential to be used as a live-cell imaging agent with long-term photostability. Furthermore, a simple but effective method to determine the concentration of hemoglobin (Hb) in diluted human blood samples was also developed based on the inner filter effect (IFE). The method demonstrates good linearity from 0.01-10 μM, with a limit of determination (LOD) of 52 nM.

In this article, we present a facile and robust method for the surfactant-free preparation of polynorepinephrine stabilised microcapsules templated from an oil-in-water emulsion. The resulting microcapsule structures are dependent on the concentration of Cu2+ used to catalyse norepinephrine polymerisation. When the concentration of Cu2+ increases, the diameter of the microcapsules and the thickness of the shell increase correspondingly. The mechanical and chemical stability provided by the polynorepinephrine shell are explored using surface pressure measurements and atomic force microscopy, demonstrating that a rigid and robust polynorepinephrine shell is formed. In order to demonstrate potential application of the microcapsules in sustained release, Nile red stained squalane was encapsulated, and pH responsive release was monitored. It was seen that by controlling pH, the release profile could be controlled, with highest release efficacy achieved in alkaline conditions, offering a new pathway for development of encapsulation systems for the delivery of water insoluble actives.

Paper-based diagnostics are leading the field of low-cost, point of care analytical techniques. However, large scale testing facilities such as hospitals are still primarily using the gel column agglutination technique. This is because paper-based systems are single use tests that are generally more time consuming and less automatable than traditional methods. Here, we present a novel, rapid and scalable, paper-based blood typing method that can produce test results in under ten seconds. We believe this is the fastest blood typing test that is appropriate for large scale automation. The test consists of placing a drop of antibody solution on paper, followed by a drop of blood on the same locus, and measuring the evolution of blood stain area as a function of time. Positive reactions for both forward and reverse tests have significantly slower growth rates and smaller final stain sizes when compared to negatives. We analyse the effect paper type, red blood cell concentration, antibody specificity (A, B and D) and antibody dilution have on the sensitivity and reproducibility of the technique. A high sensitivity is found in papers with a low density and thickness. The optimum red blood cell concentration is determined from a balance between wicking rate, strength of reaction and optical contrast. A and B antibodies give more sensitive results than D; however, the D antigen can still be successfully identified. This technique has the potential to significantly cut down the time and cost of blood typing tests and enable design of a new high throughput and fully automatable system.

Azobenzene-based materials have found applications in a wide variety of systems as a convenient method to induce photo-responsive behaviour through facile trans (E) to cis (Z) isomerization. Of particular interest are condensed matter systems, for which diverse assemblies have been applied in myriad ways to produce optical materials, controllable assemblies and functional surfaces. However, isomerization of azobenzene faces unique challenges in condensed systems when compared with dilute states (molecular solution and gas phase) where isomerization is best understood. In the present work, we explore recent studies looking at these challenges experienced in condensed matter phases, some solutions proposed to improve isomerization efficiency, and further give these issues wider context for the future development of light-responsive soft-matter systems.

Perfluorocarbon emulsion droplets are interesting colloidal systems with applications, ranging from diagnostics and theranostics to drug delivery, due to their controllable phase transition into microbubbles via heat application or acoustic droplet vapourisation. This work highlights the application of small- and ultra-small-angle neutron scattering (SANS and USANS, respectively), in combination with contrast variation techniques, in observing the in situ phase transition of polydopamine-stabilised perfluorohexane (PDA/PFH) emulsion droplets into microbubbles during heating. Results show peak USANS intensities at temperatures around 90 °C, which indicates that the phase transition of PDA/PFH emulsion droplets occurs at significantly higher temperatures than the bulk boiling point of pure liquid PFH (56 °C). Analysis and model fitting of the SANS and USANS data allowed us to estimate droplet sizes and interfacial properties at different temperatures (20 °C, 90 °C, and 20 °C after cooling), giving valuable insights about the transformation of these polydisperse emulsion droplet systems.

Pickering emulsions with stimuli responsive properties have attracted mounting research attention owing to their potential for on-demand destabilisation of emulsions. However, a combination of biocompatibility and long-term stability are essential to efficiently apply such systems in biomedical applications, and this remains a significant challenge. To address current limitations, here we report the formation of photothermally responsive oil-in-water (o/w) Pickering emulsions fabricated using biocompatible stabilisers and showing prolonged stability. For the first time, we explore polydopamine (PDA) bowl-shaped mesoporous nanoparticles (PDA nanobowls) as a Pickering stabiliser without any surface modification or other stabiliser present. As-prepared PDA nanobowl-stabilised Pickering emulsions are shown to be pH responsive, and more significantly show high photothermal efficiency under near-infrared illumination due the incorporation of PDA into the system, which has remarkable photothermal response. These biocompatible, photothermally responsive o/w Pickering emulsion systems show potential in controlled drug release applications stimulated by NIR illumination.

Concentrated wormlike micellar fluids form the basis for a vast array of formulated products, from liquid soaps and shampoos to drag reduction and drilling fluids. Typically, these systems are analyzed using bulk rheological measurements to determine their flow properties and cryo-microscopy to detect their nanostructure. Small-angle neutron scattering provides an opportunity to directly and nonperturbatively analyze nanostructure in situ but is complicated for concentrated systems by correlations from interparticle volume exclusion. Here, we use small-angle and ultra-small-angle neutron scattering to probe directly for the first time the nanostructure of concentrated wormlike micellar fluids composed of the widely used surfactant pair sodium laureth sulfate and cocamidopropyl betaine in aqueous electrolytes. Obtained data are analyzed using different approaches to determine scattering contributions from the wormlike particles themselves and interactions between them. It is found that approximating worms as locally rigid cylinders offers some insight into their aggregation dimensions at short length scales, and both volume exclusion and screened Coulombic interaction potentials describe interactions reasonably well. Using the semi-empirical polymer reference interaction site model (PRISM) gives excellent agreement with observed scattering, and physical insight obtained using this approach is discussed in detail. A drawback of this method is the significant complexity in coding the model in order to fit data, so to facilitate this for future researchers, we provide with this paper a fully operational, open-source code to utilize this model.

Hypothesis Confinement causes a change in the amount of surfactant adsorbed and in the adsorption morphology. Experiments Two cationic surfactants, tetradecyltrimethylammonium bromide (TTAB) and cetylpyridinium chloride (CPC) were adsorbed at the silica-water interface. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) force curves were measured on 50 nm and 80 nm wide trenches. Force curves were also measured on silica pillars, and the results were quantified based on distance from the edge. Findings Trenches: Adsorbed surfactants films in 50 nm and 80 nm trenches showed the same break-through values. However, compared to unconfined values, TTAB in trenches had decreased break-through and adhesion forces while CPC in trenches had increased break-through and adhesion forces, indicating that surfactant identity varies the confinement effect. Pillars: Near the edge, few surfactants adsorb, and those that do extend in the direction normal to the surface. While the experimental data agree qualitatively with previous coarse-grained molecular dynamic simulations, the length scales at which the phenomena are detected differ by ~ half-order of magnitude. Specifically, experimental data show measurable effects on adsorbed surfactant morphology at a distance from the edge 10–20 times the length of a surfactant molecule after accounting for the ~8 nm size of the probe.

The ability to diagnose and treat critically bleeding patients can save more than 2 million lives a year. Diagnosing hypofibrinogenemia is essential in these patients. Recently, with the development of new handheld diagnostics, fibrinogen concentration can be measured rapidly at the point of care. However, these diagnostics can only work with plasma and hence need blood cells to be separated before use. In this study, we demonstrate a handheld fibrinogen diagnostic that works with whole blood. The test works by (1) forming a premixed droplet of a whole blood sample and thrombin solution on a solid surface, (2) allowing it to clot, and (3) dropping a paper strip on top. The further that blood moves down the strip, the lower the fibrinogen concentration. The diagnostic can easily measure plasma fibrinogen concentrations below 1.6 g/L for blood samples with hematocrits between 40 and 50%. Furthermore, diluting blood samples not only increases the test's sensitivity but also eliminates the effect of hematocrit and thrombin inhibitors. The test can be completed in 3-4 min, making it suitable for diagnosing early hypofibrinogenemia and allowing for fibrinogen replacement therapy in critically bleeding patients.

The mechanical properties of crystals are controlled by the translational symmetry of their structures. But for glasses with a disordered structure, the link between the symmetry of local particle arrangements and stability is not well established. In this contribution, we provide experimental verification that the centrosymmetry of nearest-neighbor polyhedra in a glass strongly correlates with the local mechanical stability. We examine the distribution of local stability and local centrosymmetry in a glass during aging and deformation using microbeam x-ray scattering. These measurements reveal the underlying relationship between particle-level structure and larger-scale behavior and demonstrate that spatially connected, coordinated local transformations to lower symmetry structures are fundamental to these phenomena. While glassy structures lack obvious global symmetry breaking, local structural symmetry is a critical factor in predicting stability.

The gel test is the most prevalent method for the forward and reverse blood typing tests. It relies on the controlled centrifugation of red blood cells (RBCs) and antibodies through a gel column. This noncontinuous matrix is currently based on microbeads that often lack sensitivity. For the first time, nanocellulose hydrogel is demonstrated as a sustainable and reliable medium for gel-based blood typing diagnostics. Gels with a minimum of 0.3 wt % TEMPO-oxidized cellulose nanofibers (0.92 mmol/g of carboxyl content) separate agglutinated and individual RBCs in the forward test. The addition of glycine is able to balance the osmotic pressure and reduce hemolysis to 5%, while retaining the electrostatic repulsion responsible for the gel network structure and its rheological properties. For the reverse typing, cellulose nanofibers are chemically cross-linked with hexamethylenediamine (HMDA), increasing the gel yield point 8-fold. Sodium chloride is added to achieve the osmolality found in the human plasma and limit cell lysis to 15%, without affecting the gel colloidal stability. Nanocellulose hydrogel constitutes a performant, low cost, and green soft material, providing clear and well-defined results for both blood grouping tests.

Biomedical device-related infection (BDI) is of great concern in modern clinical and medical applications. Various approaches to combat BDI are based on two major principles: the prevention of biofoulants adhering on medical devices and the ability to eradicate biofouling once formed. To minimize the risk of BDI, an antifouling coating with bactericidal ability is highly desirable. In this work, we report on the use of polynorepinephrine (PNE) as a promising strategy to prevent BDI due to its excellent antifouling and photothermal bacterial killing capabilities. PNE coatings show superior protein resistance against a model biofoulant (bovine serum albumin (BSA)) when compared with poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) and polydopamine (PDA) coatings. The antifouling mechanism between BSA protein molecules and coating films is investigated using atomic force microscopy (AFM). We also demonstrate that PNE-modified surfaces show remarkable bacterial killing ability against both Gram-positive

The concept of blood typing diagnostics using blood drops dried onto transparent cellulose nanocrystal thin film (∼35 nm) coatings has been demonstrated. The substrate onto which the blood drops are dried plays an important role in such tests, depending on surface composition, roughness, and wettability. The drying profile of three different fluid dispersions: model latex particles, reagent blood cells, and whole human blood was studied on a range of different surfaces, including cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs), regenerated cellulose, and several hydrophobic polymers, in order to understand the role of surface chemistry, roughness, and fluid dispersion properties. The morphology of these surfaces was investigated using atomic force microscopy, roughness was calculated, and wettability was explored via contact angle measurement. The morphology of dried drops of human blood on different cellulosic surfaces was compared in order to understand the importance of cellulose crystallinity. Well-defined dried blood drops were observed on random and aligned CNC surfaces, facilitating visualization of individual cells. A simple antibody-antigen test was used to demonstrate the effectiveness of the CNC substrate for blood testing, showing high and reproducible selectivity.

Hypothesis: The self-assembly of long tail sugar-based surfactants into worm-like micelles has recently been demonstrated, and the rheological properties of such systems have been shown to be tuneable through subtle modifications of the molecular characteristics of the surfactant monomer. In particular, the anomeric configuration of the hexadecylmaltoside headgroup was shown to induce profound changes in the nanostructure and rheology of the system. The origin of such changes is hypothesised to arise from differences in the structure and relaxation of the micellar networks in the semi-dilute regime. Experiments: Here we explore the molecular background to the flow properties of the two anomers of hexadecylmaltoside (alpha- and beta-C(16)G(2)) by directly connecting their rheological behaviour to the micelle morphology. For this purpose, 1-3 plane rheo-small-angle neutron scattering measurements, using a Couette cell geometry, probed the structural changes in the micellar phase under shear. The effect of surfactant anomeric configuration, surfactant concentration, temperature and mixing ratio of the two anomers were investigated. The static micelle structure in the semi-dilute regime was determined using the polymer reference interaction site model. Findings: The segmental alignment of the micellar phase was studied under several flow conditions, showing that the shear-thinning behaviour relates to the re-arrangement of beta-C(16)G(2) worm-like micelles, whilst shorter alpha-C(16)G(2) micelles are considerably less affected by the flow. The results are rationalised in terms of micelle alignment and disruption of the entangled network, providing a detailed mechanism by which sugar-based surfactants control the rheology of the fluid. To further enable future studies, we provide the complete code for modelling micelle structure in the semi-dilute regime using the polymer reference interaction site model. (C) 2021 The Authors. Optogenetic approaches have broad applications, including regulating cell signaling and gene expression. Photoresponsive protein LOV2 and its binding partner ZDK represent an important protein caging/uncaging optogenetic system. Herein, we combine time-resolved small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) and atomic force microscopy (AFM) to reveal different structural states of LOV2 and the light-controlled mechanism of interaction between LOV2 and ZDK. In response to blue light within a time frame of ca. 70 s, LOV2 has a significantly higher value of radius of gyration Rg (29.6 ± 0.3 vs 26.4 ± 0.4 A) than its dark state, suggesting unwinding of the C-terminal Jα-helix into an open structure. Atomic force microscopy was used to characterize molecular interactions of LOV2 in open and closed states with ZDK at a single-molecule level. The closed state of LOV2 enables strong binding with ZDK, characterized by a 60-fold lower dissociation rate and a ∼1.5-times higher activation energy barrier than for its open state. In combination, these data support a light-switching mechanism that is modulated by the proximity of multiple binding sites of LOV2 for ZDK.

Cellular uptake and intracellular targeting to specific organelles are key events in the cellular processing of nanomaterials. Herein, we perform a detailed structure-property relationship study on carboxylic acid-side-chain-bearing polyacrylates to provide design criteria for the manipulation of their cellular interactions. Redox-initiated reversible addition-fragmentation chain-transfer (RRAFT) polymerization of three -butyl-protected -acylated amino ester-based acrylate monomers of different substitutions and degrees of polymerization (DPs) yielded defined and pH-responsive carboxylic acid-side-chain polymers upon deprotection (-acetyl, DP 1: P(M); -propionyl, DP 1: P(E), DP 2: P(E)). Flow cytometry studies revealed time-dependent cell association with P(E) > P(E) > P(M) at any given time point. Importantly, the type of cyanine dye used for labeling was found to significantly influence the cellular processing of the polymers. Changing the dye from Cy5 to its sulfonated version sulfoCy5 resulted in a much lower cellular association. Moreover, Cy5-labeled polymers were targeted to mitochondria, while sulfoCy5 modification caused a significant change in the cellular fate of polymers toward lysosome trafficking. This study highlights the importance of selecting a suitable dye but also demonstrates the possibilities for the rational design of organelle-specific targeting of carboxylated polyacrylates.

Spontaneous formation of vesicles from the self-assembly of two specific surfactants, one zwitterionic (oleyl amidopropyl betaine, OAPB) and the other anionic (Aerosol-OT, AOT), is explored in water using small-angle scattering techniques. Two factors were found to be critical in the formation of vesicles: surfactant ratio, as AOT concentrations less than equimolar with OAPB result in cylindrical micelles or mixtures of micellar structures, and salt concentration, whereby increasing the amount of NaCl promotes vesicle formation by reducing headgroup repulsions. Small-angle neutron scattering measurements reveal that the vesicles are approximately 30-40 nm in diameter, depending on sample composition. Small-angle X-ray scattering measurements suggest preferential partitioning of OAPB molecules on the vesicle inner layer to support vesicular packing. Heating the vesicles to physiological temperature (37 °C) causes them to collapse into smaller ellipsoidal micelles (2-3 nm), with higher salt concentrations (≥10 mM) inhibiting this transition. These aggregates could serve as responsive carriers for loading or unloading of aqueous cargoes such as drugs and pharmaceuticals, with temperature changes serving as a simple release/uptake mechanism.

In this study, we analyze stain growth kinetics from droplets of biological fluids such as blood, plasma, and protein solutions on paper both experimentally and numerically. The primary difference of biological fluids from a simple fluid is a significant wetting/dewetting hysteresis in paper. This becomes important in later stages of droplet wicking, after the droplet has been completely absorbed into paper. This is shown by anomalous power dependence of area with time in the later stages of radial wicking. At early stages, current numerical wicking models can predict stain growth of biological fluids. However, at later stages, the introduction of hysteresis complicates modeling significantly. We show that the cause of the observed hysteresis is due to contact angle effects and that this is the dominant mechanism that leads to the anomalous stain growth kinetics measured uniquely in biological fluids. Results presented will streamline the design process of paper-based diagnostics, allowing a modeling approach instead of a trial and error method.

Cellulose nanocrystal (CNC) research has addressed increased attention in the bioprocessing community, especially the utility of these materials in different fields, including biomedical and materials applications. In this review, the different preparation methods and properties of CNC materials will be initially briefly discussed. The latter focuses special attention on the alignment of CNCs and its applications. Different methods to induce CNC alignment, including self-assembly, shear-based alignment, magnetic and electric field alignment, spin-coating, dip-coating, etc., are reviewed in detail, followed by the different characterization techniques to quantify the alignments of CNCs. The current and potential applications of aligned CNCs, such as fillers to enhance the mechanical and thermal properties of biocomposites, photonic materials to deal with structural colors and enhancement in optical properties of iridescent films, and reduced wettability for high-resolution printing, are further discussed to provide more insights into this promising research direction. We hope that this review will shine light on CNC alignment and also open the door to different types of applications.

Fluorinated hydrocarbon (FHC) contamination has attracted global attention recently because of persistence within the environment and ecosystems of many types of FHC. The surfactant perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) is particularly commonly found in contaminated sites, and thus, urgent action is needed for its removal from the environment. In this study, water dispersible hybrid capsules were successfully prepared from an oil-in-water emulsion stabilized by graphene oxide and including a silicate precursor to grow a strong, mesoporous capsule shell surrounding the droplets. These capsules were decorated with amine groups to present a positively charged outer corona that attracts negative PFOA molecules. The aminated capsules were effectively applied as a novel technology to adsorb and sequester PFOA contamination in water. It was confirmed that PFOA removal by the capsules was pH and PFOA concentration dependent, with adsorption efficiencies of >60 mg g-1 under ideal conditions. PFOA removal kinetics followed using high-performance liquid chromatography and liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry showed that capture of PFOA by the capsules reached a maximum of >99.9% in 2-3 days.

This paper reports the molecular weight control of polymers from bis-thyminyl monomers via confined photo-polymerisation inside different sized nanoreactors. Bis-thyminyl monomers were hosted inside nanoreactors (oil-in-water microemulsion, water-in-oil microemulsion, and miniemulsion) and topochemically polymerised using UV-light. UV-VIS and NMR spectroscopy and gel permeation chromatography (GPC) were used to confirm polymer formation and the molecular weight of formed polymers. The molecular weight of the formed polymer could be increased by increasing the diameter of the nanoreactors, which demonstrates that it is possible to control polymer molecular weight by modifying the nanoscopic reaction vessel size. This confined polymerisation provides polymers with a narrow molecular weight distribution when compared with conventional topochemical polymerisation.

The spontaneous adsorption of graphene oxide (GO) sheets at the air-water interface is explored using X-ray reflectivity (XRR) measurements. As a pure aqueous dispersion, GO sheets do not spontaneously adsorb at the air-water interface due to their high negative surface potential (-60 mV) and hydrophilic functionality. However, when incorporated with surfactant molecules at optimal ratios and loadings, GO sheets can spontaneously be driven to the surface. It is hypothesised that surfactant molecules experience favourable attractive interactions with the surfaces of GO sheets, resulting in co-assembly that serves to render the sheets surface active. The GO/surfactant composites then collectively adsorb at the air-water interface, with XRR analysis suggesting an interfacial structure comprising surfactant tailgroups in air and GO/surfactant headgroups in water for a combined thickness of 30-40 Å, depending on the surfactant used. Addition of too much surfactant appears to inhibit GO surface adsorption by saturating the interface, and low loadings of GO/surfactant composites (even at optimal ratios) do not show significant adsorption indicating a partitioning effect. Lastly, surfactant chemistry is also a key factor dictating adsorption capacity of GO. The zwitterionic surfactant oleyl amidopropyl betaine causes marked increases in GO surface activity even at very low concentrations (≤0.2 mM), whereas non-ionic surfactants such as Triton X-100 and hexaethyleneglycol monododecyl ether require higher concentrations (ca. 1 mM) in order to impart spontaneous adsorption of the sheets. Anionic surfactants do not enhance GO surface activity presumably due to like-charge repulsions that prevent co-assembly. This work provides useful insight into the synergy between GO sheets and molecular amphiphiles in aqueous systems for enhancing the surface activity of GO, and can be used to inform system formulation for developing water-friendly, surface active composites based around atomically thin materials.

Ultrasound has important applications, predominantly in the field of diagnostic imaging. Presently, colloidal systems such as microbubbles, phase-change emulsion droplets and particle systems with acoustic properties and multiresponsiveness are being developed to address typical issues faced when using commercial ultrasound contrast agents, and to extend the utility of such systems to targeted drug delivery and multimodal imaging. Current technologies and increasing research data on the chemistry, physics and materials science of new colloidal systems are also leading to the development of more complex, novel and application-specific colloidal assemblies with ultrasound contrast enhancement and other properties, which could be beneficial for multiple biomedical applications, especially imaging-guided treatments. In this article, we review recent developments in new colloids with applications that use ultrasound contrast enhancement. This work also highlights the emergence of colloidal materials fabricated from or modified with biologically derived and bio-inspired materials, particularly in the form of biopolymers and biomembranes. Challenges, limitations, potential developments and future directions of these next-generation colloidal systems are also presented and discussed.

Wormlike micelles (WLMs) are vital components of many consumer products and industrial fluids, adding a shear-dependent viscous texture through their entanglement in solutions. It is now well accepted from experiments such as coupling rheology and scattering that, similar to many polymer solutions and dispersions of highly anisotropic particles, WLM behavior during shear arises from the alignment of the “worms” with the shear field, resulting in ordering that is rapidly lost in the cessation of shear. Most studies of such systems have been limited to dilute systems that are far below concentrations used industrially and commercially, due to the complexity of analyzing shear-induced many-body effects in high volume fraction dispersions. Here, we explore the shear alignment of concentrated WLM solutions comprising sodium laureth sulfate and cocamidopropyl betaine in 0.38 M aqueous sodium chloride. By analyzing only scattering data at high values of the scattering vector (i.e., correlations at short length scales that are dominant in such concentrated systems), we explore whether useful information can be obtained by naïvely approximating the WLMs as an ensemble of unconnected short rods representing sections of the worms. By taking this reductionist approach to analyzing the obtained two-dimensional scattering patterns from these systems under shear, we find that in this regime, such concentrated worms can be approximated as cylinders that become more aligned with the direction of shear as volume fraction and shear rate increase.

Perfluorocarbon emulsion droplets are hybrid colloidal materials with vast applications, ranging from imaging to drug delivery, due to their controllable phase transition into microbubbles via heat application or acoustic droplet vapourisation. The current work highlights the application of small- and ultra-small-angle neutron scattering (SANS and USANS), in combination with contrast variation techniques, in observing the in situ phase transition of polydopamine-shelled, perfluorocarbon (PDA/PFC) emulsion droplets with controlled polydispersity into microbubbles upon heating. We correlate these measurements with optical and transmission electron microscopy imaging, dynamic light scattering, and thermogravimetric analysis to characterise these emulsions, and observe their phase transition into microbubbles. Results show that the phase transition of PDA/PFC droplets with perfluorohexane (PFH), perfluoropentane (PFP), and PFH–PFP mixtures occur at temperatures that are around 30–40 °C higher than the boiling points of pure liquid PFCs, and this is influenced by the specific PFC compositions (perfluorohexane, perfluoropentane, and mixtures of these PFCs). Analysis and model fitting of neutron scattering data allowed us to monitor droplet size distributions at different temperatures, giving valuable insights into the transformation of these polydisperse, emulsion droplet systems.

Pattern formation is a common occurrence in drying colloidal systems. The most common in droplets, is a ring distribution where the constituents have relocated to the edge, which is referred to as a coffee ring. This deposit is unfavourable in many manufacturing processes and is of fundamental interest. In this study, we present a model capable of predicting when a coffee ring will be observed in hard spherical particle systems. Ring profiles are found to be formed at low contact angles with the specific angle predicated upon the initial concentration of the suspension. Modelling results are in agreement with experiments using latex suspensions.

The first steps towards top-down morphology control in micellar self-assembly are introduced. Kinetically stable micelles are formed from block copolymers (BCPs) using continuous flow techniques by turbulent mixing of water with a THF solution of polymers. In this way, particle shape and size can be altered from spheres to ellipsoids solely via tuning of mixing parameters from a single BCP.
