Abstract

Plant functional traits can predict community assembly and ecosystem functioning and are thus widely used in global models of vegetation dynamics and land-climate feedbacks. Still, we lack a global understanding of how land and climate affect plant traits. A previous global analysis of six traits observed two main axes of variation: (1) size variation at the organ and plant level and (2) leaf economics balancing leaf persistence against plant growth potential. The orthogonality of these two axes suggests they are differently influenced by environmental drivers. We find that these axes persist in a global dataset of 17 traits across more than 20,000 species. We find a dominant joint effect of climate and soil on trait variation. Additional independent climate effects are also observed across most traits, whereas independent soil effects are almost exclusively observed for economics traits. Variation in size traits correlates well with a latitudinal gradient related to water or energy limitation. In contrast, variation in economics traits is better explained by interactions of climate with soil fertility. These findings have the potential to improve our understanding of biodiversity patterns and our predictions of climate change impacts on biogeochemical cycles.

Abstract

We study properties of evolution equations which are first order in time and arbitrary order in space (FTNS). Following Gundlach and Mart\'in-Garc\'ia (2006) we define strong and symmetric hyperbolicity for FTNS systems and examine the relationship between these definitions, and the analogous concepts for first order systems. We demonstrate equivalence of the FTNS definition of strong hyperbolicity with the existence of a strongly hyperbolic first order reduction. We also demonstrate equivalence of the FTNS definition, up to N=4, of symmetric hyperbolicity with the existence of a symmetric hyperbolic first order reduction., Comment: 33 pages

11. Hyperbolicity of Physical Theories with Application to General Relativity

Abstract

We consider gauge theories from the free evolution point of view, in which initial data satisfying constraints of a theory are given. Because the constraints are compatible with the field equations they remain so. We study a model constrained Hamiltonian theory and identify a particular structure in the equations of motion which we call the standard gauge freedom. The pure gauge subsystem of this model theory is identified and the manner in which the gauge variables couple to the field equations is presented. We demonstrate that the set of gauge choices that can be coupled to the field equations to obtain a, properly defined, wave-like formulation is exactly the set of wave-like pure gauges. Consequently we analyze a parametrized family of formulations of general relativity. The generalization of the harmonic gauge formulation to a five parameter family of gauge conditions is obtained.

Abstract

Well-posedness of the initial (boundary) value problem is an essential property, both of meaningful physical models and of numerical applications. To prove well-posedness of wave-type equations their level of hyperbolicity is an essential ingredient. We develop helpful tools and classify a large class of Hamiltonian versions of Einstein's equations with live gauge conditions with respect to their hyperbolicity. 15. Hyperbolic formulations of General Relativity with Hamiltonian structure

Abstract

With the aim of deriving symmetric hyperbolic free-evolution systems for GR that possess Hamiltonian structure and allow for the popular puncture gauge condition we analyze the hyperbolicity of Hamiltonian systems. We develop helpful tools which are applicable to either the first order in time, second order in space or the fully second order form of the equations of motion. For toy models we find that the Hamiltonian structure can simplify the proof of symmetric hyperbolicity. 16. Strongly hyperbolic Hamiltonian systems in numerical relativity: Formulation and symplectic integration

Abstract

We consider two strongly hyperbolic Hamiltonian formulations of general relativity and their numerical integration with a free and a partially constrained symplectic integrator. In those formulations we use hyperbolic drivers for the shift and in one case also for the densitized lapse. A system where the densitized lapse is an external field allows to enforce the momentum constraints in a holonomically constrained Hamiltonian system and to turn the Hamilton constraint function from a weak to a strong invariant. These schemes are tested in a perturbed Minkowski and the Schwarzschild space-time. In those examples we find advantages of the strongly hyperbolic formulations over the ADM system presented in [arXiv:0807.0734]. 19. Free and constrained symplectic integrators for numerical general relativity

Abstract

We consider symplectic time integrators in numerical General Relativity and discuss both free and constrained evolution schemes. For free evolution of ADM-like equations we propose the use of the Stoermer-Verlet method, a standard symplectic integrator which here is explicit in the computationally expensive curvature terms. For the constrained evolution we give a formulation of the evolution equations that enforces the momentum constraints in a holonomically constrained Hamiltonian system and turns the Hamilton constraint function from a weak to a strong invariant of the system. This formulation permits the use of the constraint-preserving symplectic RATTLE integrator, a constrained version of the Stoermer-Verlet method. The behavior of the methods is illustrated on two effectively 1+1-dimensional versions of Einstein's equations, that allow to investigate a perturbed Minkowski problem and the Schwarzschild space-time. We compare symplectic and non-symplectic integrators for free evolution, showing very different numerical behavior for nearly-conserved quantities in the perturbed Minkowski problem. Further we compare free and constrained evolution, demonstrating in our examples that enforcing the momentum constraints can turn an unstable free evolution into a stable constrained evolution. This is demonstrated in the stabilization of a perturbed Minkowski problem with Dirac gauge, and in the suppression of the propagation of boundary instabilities into the interior of the domain in Schwarzschild space-time., Comment: 25 pages, 7 figures; This version contains minor clarifications and corrections

Abstract

In this article we describe applications of the numerical method of discrete differential forms in computational GR. In particular we consider the initial value problem for vacuum space-times that admit plane gravitational waves. As described in an earlier paper the discrete differential form approach can provide accurate results in spherically symmetric space-times. Moreover it is manifestly coordinate independent. Here we use the polarised Gowdy solution as a testbed for two numerical schemes. One scheme reproduces that solution very well, in particular it is stable for a comparatively long time and converges quadratically.

Abstract

Understanding the nature–culture entanglement by combining the methods of natural sciences and humanities is little approached in neither of the fields. With a specific combination of methods from both digital humanities and ecology, we aimed at identifying several of people's life circumstances that relate to their individual sensitivity towards biodiversity. The circumstances with a strong correlation could be considered and targeted by decision‐makers, for example by developing specific education programmes for making people more eco‐conscious or adjusting relevant regulations.We applied machine learning techniques onto a database including information about the frequency of biodiversity mentioned in creative literature (BiL) from 1705 to 1969 as response variable related to metadata about the corresponding works and their authors as predictors, including localisation, age, gender and literature genre. The algorithm determined the response's dependency on each predictor, which can be interpreted as the intensity of this particular sensitivity parameter for biodiversity, and which we also related to time.We recognised that gender, age, region and settlement size are predictors significantly correlated to BiL. Statistically, these predictors can be viewed as starting points of the eventual individual level of awareness for biodiversity. For example, authors from villages exhibit a higher BiL than those from cities, which we interpret as a signal for the dependence of awareness for biodiversity on spatial distance from nature, which in turn can be addressed in urban development.Our conclusion is that applying a machine learning technique on literary data yields meaningful results, thereby showing potential for further similar investigations and the combination of methods from natural sciences and humanities to achieve so far unattainable insights. 24. A Framework for a Persistent Representation of Customer Knowledge to Enhance Product Development

Abstract

Competitive pressure, individualization, and constantly advancing technologies require manufacturers to gain knowledge about their customers to offer well-adapted solutions. Despite being an indispensable resource for achieving a competitive advantage, managing customer knowledge is an enormous challenge that quickly becomes a complexity trap, unless targeted processes are available. From the literature, it is known that the target-oriented knowledge management systems are required to map knowledge structures, which help to improve the organizational knowledge lifecycle and advance organizational learning. In this article, we extend research on the intersection of knowledge management and customer integration by proposing a framework for the persistent representation of customer knowledge for product development. This allows companies to integrate customer knowledge into development processes, adding value, and also leading to organizational learning from the knowledge-based view. Knowledge management systems with respect to the customer knowledge are relatively unexplored, and the literature on knowledge management often lacks empirical data. Empirical data are collected through a case study of a leading commercial vehicle manufacturer to explore the link between customer integration and knowledge management. Practitioners are provided with a practice-oriented concept that offers guidance on how to structure a knowledge representation from the company's point of view, aiming at achieving a competitive advantage.

Abstract

Deadwood is a large global carbon store with its store size partially determined by biotic decay. Microbial wood decay rates are known to respond to changing temperature and precipitation. Termites are also important decomposers in the tropics but are less well studied. An understanding of their climate sensitivities is needed to estimate climate change effects on wood carbon pools. Using data from 133 sites spanning six continents, we found that termite wood discovery and consumption were highly sensitive to temperature (with decay increasing >6.8 times per 10°C increase in temperature)—even more so than microbes. Termite decay effects were greatest in tropical seasonal forests, tropical savannas, and subtropical deserts. With tropicalization (i.e., warming shifts to tropical climates), termite wood decay will likely increase as termites access more of Earth’s surface. These findings have the potential to improve our understanding of biodiversity patterns and our predictions of climate change impacts on biogeochemical cycles. The authors investigate the broad-scale climatological and soil properties that co-vary with major axes of plant functional traits. They find that variation in plant size is attributed to latitudinal gradients in water or energy limitation, while variation in leaf economics traits is attributed to both climate and soil fertility including their interaction.

Abstract

Forest canopies are complex and highly diverse environments. Their diversity is affected by pronounced gradients in abiotic and biotic conditions, including variation in leaf chemistry. We hypothesised that branch-localised defence induction and vertical stratification in mature oaks constitute sources of chemical variation that extend across trophic levels. To test this, we combined manipulation of plant defences, predation monitoring, food-choice trials with herbivores and sampling of herbivore assemblages. Both induction and vertical stratification affected branch chemistry, but the effect of induction was stronger. Induction increased predation in the canopy and reduced herbivory in bioassays. The effects of increased predation affected herbivore assemblages by decreasing their abundance, and indirectly, their richness. In turn, we show that there are multiple factors contributing to variation across canopies. Branch-localised induction, variation between tree individuals and predation may be the ones with particularly strong effects on diverse assemblages of insects in temperate forests.

Abstract

Deadwood is a large global carbon store with its store size partially determined by biotic decay. Microbial wood decay rates are known to respond to changing temperature and precipitation. Termites are also important decomposers in the tropics but are less well studied. An understanding of their climate sensitivities is needed to estimate climate change effects on wood carbon pools. Using data from 133 sites spanning six continents, we found that termite wood discovery and consumption were highly sensitive to temperature (with decay increasing >6.8 times per 10°C increase in temperature)—even more so than microbes. Termite decay effects were greatest in tropical seasonal forests, tropical savannas, and subtropical deserts. With tropicalization (i.e., warming shifts to tropical climates), termite wood decay will likely increase as termites access more of Earth’s surface.
