The development of the health care system in Switzerland has recently been driven by different processes such as economic rationalization, bureaucratization, or digitalization, while maintaining professional notions of 'good cure and care.' Drawing on qualitative data from a Swiss acute hospital, we analyze how potentially market driven modes of governance manifest themselves in the everyday activities of nurses and physicians. We show how professional understandings of 'good cure and care' remain persistent and intermingle with logics that we call economic rationalities, manifesting in the four interrelated issues of financial pressure, bureaucratization, time pressure, and staff shortage.

Functional relationships between romantic jealousy and traits, such as neuroticism or adult attachment styles, are well-known. For the first time, we conducted a joint analysis of the Big Five traits and attachment dimensions as predictors of jealousy, which considered gender differences as well as differences in infidelity experiences and relationship status. In 847 participants, path modeling showed that higher neuroticism, lower agreeableness, and lower openness predicted higher romantic jealousy. The attachment dimensions "anxiety" and "depend" partly mediated the effect of neuroticism and fully mediated the effect of agreeableness on romantic jealousy. The direct and indirect relationships did not differ as a function of gender, relationship status, and infidelity experiences. These findings contribute to a better understanding of individual differences in romantic jealousy from a personality perspective.

Die Anzahl Gefangener, die im Justizvollzug alt werden und bis an ihr Lebensende hinter Gittern verbleiben, nimmt schweizweit zu. Diese Situation stellt die Betroffenen sowie die Institution als Ganzes vor grosse Herausforderungen. Dieser Beitrag geht der Frage der (juristischen) Möglichkeiten von Entlassungen in Zusammenhang mit einem Sterbeprozess nach und skizziert Möglichkeiten und Voraussetzungen für ein menschenwürdiges Sterben im Gefängnis.

Alors que le nombre de publications sur les études de genre ne cesse de croître dans la plupart des disciplines des sciences sociales, il nous est apparu important de faire le point sur l'apport spécifique qu'elles apportent à la géographie si l'on considère que cette discipline est aujourd'hui une science sociale attachée à penser l'espace des sociétés humaines. Comment les études de genre peuvent-elles interroger l'organisation des espaces à toutes les échelles ainsi que la spatialité des acteurs ? La géographie est-elle toujours aussi marquée par une approche androcentrique, par la naturalisation sexuée des espaces et les interprétations qui en découlent ? Quelle place une approche critique des rapports de genre peut-elle avoir à l'intersection d'autres approches géographiques qui s'intéressent au postcolonialisme, aux phénomènes de globalisation, aux migrations ? L'objectif de cet ouvrage est de faire apparaître la dimension épistémologique du genre comme outil de questionnement de la science géographique en général, qu'elle s'appréhende par le biais de l'analyse spatiale, de la géographie des pratiques sociales, d'études régionales ou d'études culturelles.

Since the spatial turn, there has been an increased use of spatial terms in social science, and geographical scales have been translated into theoretical concepts like globalisation and transnationalism. But most of this spatial terminology is used metaphorically rather than developed as an analytical tool. Critical geography has responded by pointing out that these metaphors nevertheless represent political acts that position subjects and create realities (Pratt, 1997; Smith and Katz, 1993)....

The main goal of most systems of criminal justice and most corresponding institutions, such as prisons or forensic psychiatric hospitals, is to eventually release inmates and therefore organize rehabilitative work on the basis that, after their release, they should be able to live a life without further offending. On the contrary, for offenders whose future is constrained to custody and who therefore will most probably die in prison, reinsertion or rehabilitation is not an inherent goal of custody. The chapter will explore the reasons (ageing and health conditions, delinquency at a later age and, in particular, a restrictive system of sanctions and security measures) that lead to the increase of end of life cases in prisons. Insights into the situation in selected countries provide some statistical ground for a better understanding of the importance of the phenomenon as well as of differences in cross-national perspective. Different approaches in handling end of life in prisons and related ethical questions are discussed. These approaches deal with challenges on the level of the penitentiary system, on the organizational level of the single prison, for the day-to-day work of staff, and for fellow prisoners as well as for the dying prisoners themselves.

The specialisation of physicians but also of nurses is steadily increasing. What kind of tasks a person accomplishes within a hospital does not only depend on formal qualifications, but also on social categories such as gender, age, and migration as well as informal skills like work experience, language knowledge or one’s assertiveness.

In der Schweiz werden immer mehr Menschen im Justizvollzug alt und sterben. Die Vollzugsanstalten stehen vor grossen Herausforderungen für den Lebensabend das Lebensende und das Sterben würdige Bedingungen zu schaffen. Drei Forscher der Universität Bern und der Universität Fribourg haben sich mit diesem Thema einlässlich beschäftigt. Sie stellen ihre wichtigsten Erkenntnisse dar.

En Suisse de plus en plus de détenus vont vieillir et mourir en prison. Les établissements pénitentiaires sont confrontés à un défi de taille: offrir aux détenus la possibilité de finir leur vie dans la dignité. Trois chercheurs de l’Université de Berne et de l’Université de Fribourg se sont penchés de manière approfondie sur cette question. Ils présentent ici les principaux résultats de leur étude.
