1. Search for the Decay $\Upsilon(1S)\to \gamma\eta^{'}$

Abstract: We report on a search for the radiative decay U(1S) -> gamma + eta' in 61.3 pb^-1 of data taken with the CLEO II detector at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring. Three decay chains were investigated, all involving eta' -> pi+ pi- + eta, followed by eta -> gamma + gamma, eta -> pi0 + pi0 + pi0, or eta -> pi+ + pi- + pi0. We find no candidate events in any of the three cases and set a combined upper limit of 1.6 x 10^-5 at 90% C.L., significantly smaller than the previous limit. 2. Two-body B Meson Decays to eta and eta': Observation of B->eta K*

Abstract: In a sample of 19 million produced B mesons, we have observed the decays B -> eta K* and improved our previous measurements of B -> eta'K. The branching fractions we measure for these decay modes are BR(B+ -> eta K*+) = (26.4 +9.6-8.2 +- 3.3) x $10^{-6}$, BR(B0 -> eta K*0) = (13.8 +5.5-4.6 +- 1.6) x $10^{-6}$, BR(B+ -> eta' K+) = (80 +10-9 +- 7) x $10^{-6}$ and BR(B0 -> eta' K0) = (89 +18-16 +- 9) x $10^{-6}$. Abstract: Using 4.68 fb^{-1} of e^+e^- annihilation data collected with the CLEO II detector at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring (CESR) we have studied tau radiative decays tau -> mu nu nu gamma and tau -> e nu nu gamma. For a 10 MeV minimum photon energy in the tau rest frame, the branching fraction of radiative tau decay to a muon or electron is measured to be (3.61+-0.16+-0.35)*10^{-3} or (1.75+-0.06+-0.17)*10^{-2}, respectively. Abstract: Using the CLEO detector at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring, we have studied the distribution of kinematic variables in the decay Lambda(c)(+)->Lambda e(+)nu(e). By performing a four-dimensional maximum likelihood fit, we determine the form factor ratio, R=f(2)/f(1)=-0.31 +/- 0.05(stat)+/- 0.04(syst), the pole mass, M-pole=[2.21 +/- 0.08(stat)+/- 0.14(syst)] GeV/c(2), and the decay asymmetry parameter of the Lambda(c)(+), alpha(Lambda c)=-0.86 +/- 0.03(stat)+/- 0.02(syst), for < q(2)>=0.67 (GeV/c(2))(2). We compare the angular distributions of the Lambda(c)(+) and (Lambda) over bar (-)(c) and find no evidence for CP violation: A(Lambda c)=(alpha(Lambda c)+alpha((Lambda) over barc))/(alpha(Lambda c)-alpha((Lambda) over barc))=0.00 +/- 0.03(stat)+/- 0.01(syst)+/- 0.02, where the third error is from the uncertainty in the world average of the CP-violating parameter, A(Lambda), for Lambda -> p pi(-).

Abstract: We report on a search for CP violation in the decay of D-0 and D-0 to K(S)(0)pi(+)pi(-). The data come from an integrated luminosity of 9.0 fb(-1) of e(+)e(-) collisions at rootsapproximate to10 GeV recorded with the CLEO II.V detector. The resonance substructure of this decay is well described by ten quasi-two-body decay channels plus a small nonresonant component. We observe no evidence for CP violation in the amplitudes that describe the decay D-0-->K(S)(0)pi(+)pi(-).

Abstract: Using the CLEO III detector at CESR, we have measured the branching ratio of the decay Xi(c)(0)-->pK(-)K(-)pi(+) relative to Xi(c)(0)-->Xi(-)pi(+). We find B(Xi(c)(0)-->pK(-)K(-)pi(+))B(Xi(c)(0)-->Xi(-)pi(+))=0.35+/-0.06(stat)+/-0.03(syst). In the resonant substructure of this mode, we find evidence for Xi(c)(0) decays to pK(*)(892)K-0(-), and measure B(Xi(c)(0)-->pK(*)(892)K-0(-))xB(K-*(892)(0)-->K(-)pi(+))/B(Xi(c)(0)-->Xi(-)pi(+))=0.14+/-0.03(stat)+/-0.01(syst) and B(Xi(c)(0)-->pK(-)K(-)pi(+))/B(Xi(c)(0)-->Xi(-)pi(+))=0.21+/-0.04(stat)+/-0.02(syst) for the non-K-*(892)(0)Xi(c)(0)-->pK(-)K(-)pi(+) decays.

Abstract: Using a 13.7 fb(-1) data sample collected with the CLEO II and II.V detectors, we report new branching fraction measurements for two Cabibbo-suppressed decay modes of the D+ meson: B(D+-->pi(+)pi(0))=(1.31+/-0.17+/-0.09+/-0.09)x10(-3) and B(D+-->K+(K) over bar (0))=(5.24+/-0.43+/-0.20+/-0.34)x10(-3) which are significant improvements over past measurements. The errors reflect statistical and systematical uncertainties as well as the uncertainty in the absolute D+ branching fraction scale. We also set the first 90% confidence level upper limit on the branching fraction of the doubly Cabibbo-suppressed decay mode B(D+-->K(+)pi(0))

Abstract: We report on a search for a CP-violating asymmetry in the charmless hadronic decay B-->K*(892)(+/-)pi(-/+), using 9.1 fb(-1) of integrated luminosity produced at roots = 10.58 GeV and collected with the CLEO detector. We find A(CP)(B-->K*(892)(+/-)pi(-/+)) = 0.26(-0.34)(+0.33)(stat)(-0.08)(+0.10)(syst), giving an allowed interval of [-0.31,0.78] at the 90% confidence level.

Abstract: We report on determinations of \V-ub\ resulting from studies of the branching fraction and q(2) distributions in exclusive semileptonic B decays that proceed via the b-->u transition. Our data set consists of the 9.7x106B (B) over bar meson pairs collected at the Y(4S) resonance with the CLEO II detector. We measure B(B-0-->pi(-)l(+)nu)=(1.33+/-0.18+/-0.11+/-0.01+/-0.07)x10(-4) and B(B-0-->rho(-)l(+)nu)=(2.17+/-0.34(-0.54)(+0.47)+/-0.41+/-0.01)x10(-4), where the errors are statistical, experimental systematic, systematic due to residual form-factor uncertainties in the signal, and systematic due to residual form-factor uncertainties in the cross-feed modes, respectively. We also find B(B+-->etal(+)nu)=(0.84+/-0.31+/-0.16+/-0.09)x10(-4), consistent with what is expected from the B-->pilnu mode and quark model symmetries. We extract \V-ub\ using light-cone sum rules for 0less than or equal toq(2)

Abstract: We present final measurements of 13 charmless hadronic B decay modes from the CLEO experiment. The decay modes include the ten pipi, Kpi, and KK final states and new limits on dibaryonic final states, p (p) over bar, p (&ULambda;) over bar, and Lambda(&ULambda;) over bar, as well as a new determination of the ratio B(B-->DK)/B(B-->Dpi). The results are based on the full CLEO II and CLEO III data samples totalling 15.3 fb(-1) at the Y(4S), and supercede previously published results.

Abstract: Using 13.5 fb(-1) of e(+)e(-) annihilation data collected with the CLEO II detector, we have observed a narrow resonance decaying to D-s*(+)pi(0) with a mass near 2.46 GeV/c(2). The search for such a state was motivated by the recent discovery by the BaBar Collaboration of a narrow state at 2.32 GeV/c(2), the D-sJ*(2317)(+), that decays to D(s)(+)pi(0). Reconstructing the D(s)(+)pi(0) and D-s*(+)pi(0) final states in CLEO data, we observe peaks in both of the corresponding reconstructed mass difference distributions, DeltaM(D(s)pi(0))=M(D(s)pi(0))-M(D-s) and DeltaM(D-s*pi(0))=M(D-s*pi(0))-M(D-s*), both of them at values near 350 MeV/c(2). We interpret these peaks as signatures of two distinct states, the D-sJ*(2317)(+) plus a new state, designated as the D-sJ(2463)(+). Because of the similar DeltaM values, each of these states represents a source of background for the other if photons are lost, ignored or added. A quantitative accounting of these reflections confirms that both states exist. We have measured the mean mass differences =350.0+/-1.2 (stat)+/-1.0 (syst) MeV/c(2) for the D-sJ*(2317)(+) state, and =351.2+/-1.7 (stat)+/-1.0 (syst) MeV/c(2) for the new D-sJ(2463)(+) state. We have also searched, but find no evidence, for decays of the two states via the channels D-s*(+)gamma, D(s)(+)gamma, and D(s)(+)pi(+)pi(-). The observations of the two states at 2.32 and 2.46 GeV/c(2), in the D(s)(+)pi(0) and D-s*(+)pi(0) decay channels, respectively, are consistent with their interpretations as c (s) over bar mesons with an orbital angular momentum L=1 and spin and parity J(P)=0(+) and 1(+).

Abstract: Using 13.8 fb(-1) of data collected at or just below the Y(4S) with the CLEO detector, we report the result of a search for the flavor changing neutral current process D-0 --> gammagamma. We observe no significant signal for this decay mode and determine 90% confidence level upper limits on the branching fractions B(D-0 --> gammagamma)/B(D-0 --> pi(0)pi(0)) < 0.033 and B(D-0 --> gammagamma) < 2.9 x 10(-5).

Abstract: Using the CLEO II detector at CESR, we measure the eta' energy spectra in Y(1S) decays that we compare with models of the eta'g*g form factor. This form factor, especially at large eta' energies, may provide an explanation of the large rate for B-->X(s)eta'. Our data do not support a large anomalous coupling at higher q(2) and thus the large eta' rate remains a mystery, possibly requiring a non-standard-model explanation.

Abstract: In the standard model, the charged current of the weak interaction is governed by a unitary quark mixing matrix that also leads to CP violation. Measurement of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa (CKM) matrix elements is essential to searches for new physics, either through the structure of the CKM matrix, or a departure from unitarity. We determine the CKM matrix element \V-cb\ using a sample of 3x10(6) B (B) over bar events in the CLEO detector at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring. We determine the yield of reconstructed (B) over bar (0)-->D*(+)l (ν) over bar and B--->D(*0)l (ν) over bar decays as a function of w, the boost of the D* in the B rest frame, and from this we obtain the differential decay rate dGamma/dw. By extrapolating dGamma/dw to w=1, the kinematic end point at which the D* is at rest relative to the B, we extract the product \V-cb\F(1), where F(1) is the form factor at w=1. We find \V-cb\F(1)=0.0431+/-0.0013(stat)+/-0.0018(syst). We combine \V-cb\F(1) with theoretical results for F(1) to determine \V-cb\=0.0469+/-0.0014(stat)+/-0.0020(syst)+/-0.0018(theor). We also integrate the differential decay rate over w to obtain B((B) over bar (0)-->D*(+)(ν) over bar)=(6.09+/-0.19+/-0.40)% and B(B--->D*(0)l (ν) over bar)=(6.50+/-0.20+/-0.43)%.

Abstract: Using data collected on the Y(4S) resonance and the nearby continuum by the CLEO detector at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring, we have searched for the semileptonic decay of B mesons to e (p) over bar inclusive final states. We obtain an upper limit for b-->c decays of B(B-->(p) over bare(-)(ν) over bar X-e)u decay, we find an upper limit of B(B--->p (p) over bare(-)(ν) over bar (e))p (p) over bare(-)(ν) over bar (e))

Abstract: Using 9.1 fb(-1) of e(+)e(-) data collected at the Y(4S) with the CLEO detector using the Cornell Electron Storage Ring, measurements are reported for both the branching fractions and the helicity amplitudes for the decays B--->D(*0)rho(-) and (B) over bar (0)-->D(*+)rho(-). The fraction of longitudinal polarization in (B) over bar (0)-->D(*+)rho(-) is found to be consistent with that in (B) over bar (0)-->D(*+)l(-)(ν) over bar at q(2)=M-rho(2), indicating that the factorization approximation works well. The longitudinal polarization in the B- mode is similar. The measurements also show evidence of nontrivial final-state interaction phases for the helicity amplitudes.

Abstract: Using data collected by the CLEO III detector at CESR, we report on the first observation of the decays Lambda(c)(+)-->Lambdapi(+)pi(+)pi(-)pi(0) and Lambda(c)(+)-->Lambdaomegapi(+). The branching fractions are measured relative to the pK(-)pi(+) mode; we find B(Lambda(c)(+)-->Lambdapi(+)pi(+)pi(-)pi(0))/B(Lambda(c)(+)-->pK(-)pi(+))=0.36+/-0.09(stat)+/-0.09(syst) and B(Lambda(c)(+)-->Lambdaomegapi(+))/B(Lambda(c)(+)-->pK(-)pi(+))=0.24+/-0.06(stat)+/-0.06(syst). We also observe a small excess of events in Lambda(c)(+)-->Lambdaetapi(+), eta-->pi(+)pi(-)pi(0) from which we find B(Lambda(c)(+)-->Lambdaetapi(+))/B(Lambda(c)(+)-->pK(-)pi(+))=0.41+/-0.17+/-0.10 with a corresponding limit of Lambdaetapi(+), eta-->gammagamma. We find that the combined branching fractions for Lambda(c)(+)-->Lambdaomegapi(+) and Lambda(c)(+)-->Lambdaetapi(+) comprise (87+/-13)% of the total Lambda(c)(+)-->Lambdapi(+)pi(+)pi(-)pi(0) rate. We set an upper limit on B(Lambda(c)(+)-->Lambdapi(+)pi(+)pi(-)pi(0))/B(Lambda(c)(+)-->pK(-)pi(+)) for non-omega and non-eta modes of 0.13 at 90% confidence level.

Abstract: We measure the primary lepton momentum spectrum in (B) over bar -->Xl (ν) over bar decays, for plgreater than or equal to1.5 GeV/c in the B rest frame. From this, we calculate various moments of the spectrum. In particular, we find R(0)equivalent tointegral(1.7 GeV)(dGamma/dE(sl))dEl/integral(1.5 GeV)(dGamma/dE(sl))dEl=0.6187+/-0.0014(stat)+/-0.0016(sys) and R(1)equivalent tointegral(1.5 GeV)El(dGamma/dE(sl))dEl/integral(1.5 GeV)(dGamma/dE(sl))dEl=(1.7810+/-0.0007(stat)+/-0.0009(sys)) GeV. We use these moments to determine non-perturbative parameters governing the semileptonic width. In particular, we extract the heavy quark expansion parameters (&ULambda;) over bar=(0.39+/-0.03(stat)+/-0.06(sys)+/-0.12(th)) GeV and lambda(1)=(-0.25+/-0.02(stat)+/-0.05(sys)+/-0.14(th)) GeV2. The theoretical constraints used are evaluated through order 1/M-B(3) in the non-perturbative expansion and beta(0)alpha(s)(2) in the perturbative expansion. We use these parameters to extract \V-cb\ from the world average of the semileptonic width and find \V-cb\=(40.8+/-0.5(Gammasl)+/-0.4((lambda1),((&ULambda;) over bar )exp)+/-0.9(th))x10(-3). In addition, we extract the short range b-quark mass m(b)(1S)=(4.82+/-0.07(exp)+/-0.11(th)) GeV/c(2). Finally, we discuss the implications of our measurements for the theoretical understanding of inclusive semileptonic processes.

Abstract: We have searched for the baryon-containing radiative penguin decays B- -->Lambda(p) over bar gamma and B--->Sigma(0)(p) over bar gamma, using a sample of 9.7x10(6) B (B) over bar events collected at the Y(4S) with the CLEO detector. We find no evidence for either, and set 90% confidence level upper limits of B(B--->Lambda(p) over bar gamma)+0.3B(B--->Sigma(0)(p) over bar gamma)](Egamma)>2.0 GeVSigma(0)(p) over bar gamma)+0.4B(B--->Lambda(p) over bar gamma)](Egamma)>2.0 GeVX(s)gamma,X-s containing baryons)(Egamma)>2.0 GeVsgamma that are less than half the combined statistical and systematic errors quoted on these quantities.

Abstract: We report on the observation of B̄→D*π+π-π-π 0 decays. The branching ratios for D*+ and D*0 are (1.72±0.14±0.24)% and (1.80±0.24±0.27)%, respectively. Each final state has a a D*ωπ- component, with branching ratios (0.29±0.03±0.04)% and (0.45±0.10±0.07)% for the D*+ and D*0 modes, respectively. We also observe B̄→Dωπ- decays. The branching ratios for D+ and D0 are (0.28±0.05±0.04)% and (0.41±0.07±0.06)%, respectively. A spin parity analysis of the ωπ- system in the Dωπ- final state shows a preference for a wide 1- resonance. A fit to the ωπ- mass spectrum finds a central mass of (1349 ±25-5+10) MeV and width of (547±86-45+46) MeV. We identify this object as the ρ(1450) or the ρ′. ©2001 The American Physical Society.

Abstract: We report on a search for the radiative decay U(1S) -> gamma + eta' in 61.3 pb^-1 of data taken with the CLEO II detector at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring. Three decay chains were investigated, all involving eta' -> pi+ pi- + eta, followed by eta -> gamma + gamma, eta -> pi0 + pi0 + pi0, or eta -> pi+ + pi- + pi0. We find no candidate events in any of the three cases and set a combined upper limit of 1.6 x 10^-5 at 90% C.L., significantly smaller than the previous limit. Abstract: Using a sample of 4.7 fb-1 integrated luminosity accumulated with the CLEO II detector at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring (CESR), we investigate the mass spectrum and resonant structure in τ- →Κ-π+π-ντ decays. We measure the relative fractions of Κ1(1270) and Κ1(1400) resonances in these decays, as well as the Κ1 masses and widths. Our fitted Κ1 resonances are somewhat broader than previous hadroproduction measurements, and in agreement with recent CERN LEP results from tau decay. The larger central value of our measured width supports models which attribute the small τ-→Κ-π+π -ντ branching fraction to larger Κ1 widths than are presently tabulated. We also determine the Κa-Κb mixing angle θΚ. ©2000 The American Physical Society.

Abstract: We report on a study of the invariant mass spectrum of the hadronic system in the decay τ-→π-π0ντ. This study was performed with data obtained with the CLEO II detector operating at the CESR e+e- collider. We present fits to phenomenological models in which resonance parameters associated with the ρ(770) and ρ(1450) mesons are determined. The π-π0 spectral function inferred from the invariant mass spectrum is compared with data on e+e-π+π- as a test of the conserved vector current theorem. We also discuss the implications of our data with regard to estimates of the hadronic contribution to the muon anomalous magnetic moment. ©2000 The American Physical Society.

Abstract: The resonant structure of the four pion final state in the decay τ→3 ππ0ντ has been analyzed using 4.27 million τ+τ- pairs collected by the CLEO II experiment at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring. A partial wave analysis of the resonant structure of the τ→3 ππ0ντ decay has been performed; the spectral decomposition of the four pion system is dominated by the ωπ and a1π final states. The mass and width of the ρ′ resonance have been extracted from a fit to the τ→ωπντ spectral function. We have searched for second class currents in the decay τ→ωπντ using spin-parity analysis and established an upper limit on the non-vector current contribution. © 2000 The American Physical Society.

Abstract: We have observed four fully reconstructed B0 → D*+D*- candidates in 5.8 × 106 Υ(4S) → BB̄ decays recorded with the CLEO detector. The background is estimated to be 0.31 ± 0.10 events. The probability that the background could produce four or more signal candidates with the observed distribution among D*+ and D*- decay modes is 1.1 × 10-4. The measured decay rate, B(B0 → D*+D*-) = [6.2-2.9+4.0(stat) ± 1.0(syst)] × 10-4, is large enough for this decay mode to be of interest for the measurement of a time-dependent CP asymmetry. © 1999 The American Physical Society.

33. Two-Body B Meson Decays to $��$ and $��^{'}$ - Observation of $B\to ��K^{*}$

Abstract: In a sample of 19 million produced B mesons we have observed decays B -> eta K*, and improved our previous measurements of B -> eta' K. The branching fractions we measure for these decay modes are B(B+ -> eta K*+) = (27.3 +9.6 -8.2 (stat) +- 5.0 (sys)) * 10^(-6), B(B0 -> eta K*0) = (13.8 +5.5 -4.4 +- 1.7) * 10^(-6), B(B+ -> eta' K+) = (80 +10 -9 +- 8) * 10^(-6), and B(B0 -> eta' K0) = (88 +18 -16 +- 9) * 10^(-6). We have searched with comparable sensitivity for related nonstrange decays, and report upper limits for these rates. Abstract: We have studied semileptonic B meson decays with a p-wave charm meson in the final state using 3.29 × 106 BB̄ events collected with the CLEO II detector at the Cornell Electron-Positron Storage Ring. We find a value for the exclusive semileptonic product branching fraction ℬ(B- → D10ℓ ν̄ℓ)ℬ(D10 → D*+π-) = (0.373 ± 0.085 ± 0.052 ± 0.024)% and an upper limit for ℬ(ℬ- → D2*0ℓ-ν̄ ℓ)ℬ(D2*0 → D*+π) < 0.16% (90% C.L.). Furthermore, we present the first measurement of the q2 spectrum for B- → D10ℓ-ν̄ℓ.

Abstract: In a sample of 6.6 × 106 produced B mesons we have observed decays B → η′K, with branching fractions B(B+ → η′K+) = (6.5-1.4+1.5 ± 0.9) × 10-5 and B(B0 → η′K0) = (4.7-2.0+2.7 ± 0.9) × 10-5. We have searched with comparable sensitivity for 17 related decays to final states containing an η or η′ meson accompanied by a single particle or low-lying resonance. Our upper limits for these constrain theoretical interpretations of the B → η′K signal.

Abstract: We use the CLEO detector at the Cornell e+ e- storage ring, CESR, to search for the two-photon production of the glueball candidate fJ(2220) in its decay to KsKs. We present a restrictive upper limit on the product of the two-photon partial width and the KsKs branching fraction, (Γγγ BKsks)fJ(2220). We use this limit to calculate a lower limit on the stickiness, which is a measure of the two-gluon coupling relative to the two-photon coupling. This limit on stickiness indicates that the fJ(2220) has substantial glueball content.

Abstract: Using the CLEO detector at the Cornell e+e- storage ring CESR we study the two-photon production of ΛΛ̄, making the first observation of γγ→ΛΛ̄. We present the cross section for γγ→ΛΛ̄ as a function of the γγ center of mass energy and compare it to that predicted by the quark-diquark model.

Abstract: We have studied the decay B̄ → Dlv̄, where l = e or μ. From a fit to the differential decay rate dΓ/dw we measure the rate normalization FD(1)|Vcb| and form factor slope ρ̂D2, and, using measured values of τB, find Γ(B̄ → Dlv̄) = (12.0 ± 0.9 ± 2.1) ns-1. The resulting branching fractions are B(B̄0 → D+l-v̄) = (1.87 ± 0.15 ± 0.32)% and B(B- → D0l v̄) = (1.94 ± 0.15 ± 0.34)%. The form factor parameters are in agreement with those measured in B̄ → D*lv̄ decays, as predicted by heavy quark effective theory.

Abstract: The CLEO Collaboration has made the first observations of hadronic transitions among bottomonium (b (b) over bar) states other than the dipion transitions among Y(nS) states. In our study of Y(3S) decays, we find a significant signal for Y(3S)-->gammaomegaY(1S) that is consistent with radiative decays Y(3S)-->gammachi(b1,2)(2P), followed by chi(b1,2)(2P)-->omegaY(1S). The branching ratios we obtain are B[chi(b1)(2P)-->omegaY(1S)]=(1.63(-0.31-0.15)(+0.35+0.16))% and B[chi(b2)(2P)-->omegaY(1S)]=(1.10(-0.28-0.10)(+0.32+0.11))%, in which the first error is statistical and the second is systematic.

Abstract: From electron-positron collision data collected with the CLEO detector operating at Cornell Electron Storage Ring near roots=10.6 GeV, improved measurements of the branching fractions for tau decays into three explicitly identified hadrons and a neutrino are presented as B(tau(-)-->pi(-)pi(+)pi(-)nu(tau))=(9.13+/-0.05+/-0.46)%, B(tau(-)-->K(-)pi(+)pi(-)nu(tau))=(3.84+/-0.14+/-0.38)x10(-3), B(tau(-)-->K(-)K(+)pi(-)nu(tau))=(1.55+/-0.06+/-0.09)x10(-3), and B(tau(-)-->K(-)K(+)K(-)nu(tau))<3.7x10(-5) at 90% C.L., where the uncertainties are statistical and systematic, respectively.
