Systems, structures, and practices perpetuate disparities because they reinforce barriers that sort and separate students based on assumed success or failure. When students are disadvantaged in this way, the implicit message is that their learning doesn't matter. The counterpoint to these discriminatory systems is an asset-based approach, which is one that helps students and adults identify their strengths and use knowledge of those strengths to support their learning. Choosing the right improvement strategy, with continuous, meaningful, and effective professional learning at the center, is critical. Based on their work with partner districts around the U.S., the authors have identified a set of conditions for such professional learning, examples of successful professional learning practices, and recommendations for district leaders.

Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to illustrate the implementation of the flipped classroom method in teaching the course and to investigate the student's perceived helpfulness, learning outcomes and satisfaction in respect of the pre-class learning videos. Design/methodology/approach: Pre-class learning videos were integrated into a course to encourage students to acquire knowledge before lectures and workshops. Having completed the flipped classroom, a delivery questionnaire containing all items was distributed to all of the participants. The data collected were analysed statistically, using a structured equation modelling technique. Findings: Findings indicate that the perceived quality of experience of using videos before lectures and workshops has a positive influence on the perceived helpfulness of the pre-class learning videos. Furthermore, the perceived helpfulness of the pre-class learning videos has a positive effect of the acquisition perceived learning outcomes. The perceived helpfulness of the pre-class learning videos also has a positive impact on the student satisfaction with the course. Finally, there is a positive and causal relationship between the perceived learning outcomes and student's satisfaction with the course. Originality/value: Analysis reveals that the learning process and student satisfaction are improved by using pre-class learning videos.

Work-integrated learning (WIL) is a signature feature of study in many higher education institutions. In business degrees, industry feedback is recognized as an integral part of the assessment of WIL, yet the role played by industry in appraising student performance in the workplace has not been clearly defined. Based on interviews with industry supervisors and academic mentors, this paper addresses the integration of academic and industry supervisor assessment practices designed to maximize student learning outcomes and capture the depth of the learning experiences during a work placement. A model of industry feedback was developed to incorporate planned assessment practices that achieve the learning outcomes agreed to at the start of the placement by all stakeholders: the student, the academic mentor and the industry supervisor.

In a time of hyperpolarization and hyper partisanship, preparing students to deliberate about their differences becomes even more important. In this interview, Diana Hess, dean of the School of Education at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and co-author of The Political Classroom, describes the challenge of ensuring that students have access to multiple and competing viewpoints about issues of public importance. In her research with co-author Paula McAvoy, Hess said she learned that students value hearing their teachers' viewpoints as long as teachers aren't pressing those views on students but that hearing a teacher's viewpoint didn't often change a student's own opinion.

Beverly Daniel Tatum, author of "Why Are All the Black Kids Sitting Together in the Cafeteria?", talks about race with "Kappan" editor-in-chief Joan Richardson. Tatum advises more conversations about race and racial identities as a way to bridge the divide between the races. Silence, she says, is not an effective strategy for improving relationships. Silence may actually harm children because, when parents and teachers avoid talking about race, others will fill the gap for them, often with misinformation or negative information.

In this paper, we discuss the role of the educator in terms of designing a learning environment for the student which encourages the student to develop their own academic integrity. In such an environment, there is no need for the student to resort to plagiarism, as the learning and assessment tasks are not conducive to cheating, being unique and challenging for each student, regardless of the number of students enrolled in the particular course. We consider the learning design approach to assessment in the context of high-level vocational education. Educational resources are designed to support work-based knowledge and personal development capabilities. Educators assess to provide for professions, work contexts and individual learning needs. The major focus of this paper is discussion of the design of learning approaches and assessment tasks that disenable plagiarism and cheating, and promote problem-solving skills, academic integrity and creativity. The NAACP, nation's largest civil rights organization, steps up its opposition to charter schools just as a president and new education secretary appear ready to kick the sector into high gear. In 2016, the NAACP passed a resolution calling on a moratorium on the expansion of charter schools, citing concerns about transparency and accountability, diversion of money away from traditional public schools to charter schools, discipline and segregation of racial minorities. Julian Vasquez Heilig, who is a member of the California NAACP and a professor of educational leadership and policy studies at California State University Sacramento, responds to questions about that resolution and the role that charter schools play in the United States.

Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to propose the use of case studies in teaching an undergraduate course of Internet for Business in class, based on the revised Bloom's taxonomy. The study provides the empirical evidence about the effect of case-based teaching method integrated the revised Bloom's taxonomy on students' incremental learning, measured by the four constructs: knowledge application, higher-order thinking, practice evaluation knowledge and knowledge improvement. Design/methodology/approach: In this study, learning activities associated with the revised taxonomy-based learning strategy were proposed to support the development of higher-level cognitive skills. Revised application scale, higher-order thinking scale, practice evaluation knowledge scale and knowledge improvement scale were used to measure students' perception of skills corresponding to their level of application, analysis, evaluation and creation, respectively. After completing each task pertinent to case studies, students were encouraged to complete the survey questionnaire. Structural equation modelling (SEM) was employed to examine the relationships between constructs. Students participate in a course where case studies are employed as the main learning activities to promote higher-order thinking. Upon completing the course, they fill in a survey to evaluate the four constructs of incremental learning: level of knowledge application, higher-order thinking, practice evaluation knowledge and knowledge improvement. The relationships between the four constructs are then examined using SEM. Findings: Analysis reveals that with the use of case-based learning activities, knowledge application creates a positive impact on higher-order thinking. Higher-order thinking has positive influence on practice evaluation knowledge. Eventually, practice evaluation knowledge produces a positive effect on knowledge improvement. The results show the desired effects of incremental learning. Research limitations/implications: The case studies designed for teaching the Internet for Business course might not be suitable in terms of content for other courses, which limit the implication of the findings. Practical implications: The key implication is that cognitive process is enhanced by using case studies where learning activities are designed, based on the revised Bloom's taxonomy. Originality/value: The paper offers a comprehensive perspective on incremental learning where students' knowledge of Internet for Business moves developmentally towards the higher-order cognitive process dimension of the revised Bloom's taxonomy.
