Abstract

The absolute-magnitude distributions of seven supernova types are presented. The data used here were primarily taken from the Asiago Supernova Catalogue, but were supplemented with additional data. We accounted for both foreground and host-galaxy extinction. A bootstrap method is used to correct the samples for Malmquist bias. Separately, we generate volume-limited samples, restricted to events within 100 Mpc. We find that the superluminous events (M_B < -21) make up only about 0.1% of all supernovae in the bias-corrected sample. The subluminous events (M_B > -15) make up about 3%. The normal Ia distribution was the brightest with a mean absolute blue magnitude of -19.25. The IIP distribution was the dimmest at -16.75., Comment: 22 pages, 17 figures. Abstract

Photometry data were collected from the literature and analyzed for supernovae that are thought to have a gamma-ray burst association. There are several gamma-ray burst afterglow light curves that appear to have a supernova component. For these light curves, the supernova component was extracted and analyzed. A supernova light curve model was used to help determine the peak absolute magnitudes as well as estimates for the kinetic energy, ejected mass and nickel mass in the explosion. The peak absolute magnitudes are, on average, brighter than those of similar supernovae (stripped-envelope supernovae) that do not have a gamma-ray burst association, but this can easily be due to a selection effect. However, the kinetic energies and ejected masses were found to be considerably higher, on average, than those of similar supernovae without a gamma-ray burst association., Comment: Accepted by AJ, 16 pages, 5 figures

7. Absolute-Magnitude Distributions and Light Curves of Stripped-Envelope Supernovae

Abstract

The absolute visual magnitudes of three Type IIb, 11 Type Ib and 13 Type Ic supernovae (collectively known as stripped-envelope supernovae) are studied by collecting data on the apparent magnitude, distance, and interstellar extinction of each event. Weighted and unweighted mean absolute magnitudes of the combined sample as well as various subsets of the sample are reported. The limited sample size and the considerable uncertainties, especially those associated with extinction in the host galaxies, prevent firm conclusions regarding differences between the absolute magnitudes of supernovae of Type Ib and Ic, and regarding the existence of separate groups of overluminous and normal-luminosity stripped-envelope supernovae. The spectroscopic characteristics of the events of the sample are considered. Three of the four overluminous events are known to have had unusual spectra. Most but not all of the normal luminosity events had typical spectra. Light curves of stripped-envelope supernovae are collected and compared. Because SN 1994I in M51 was very well observed it often is regarded as the prototypical Type Ic supernova, but it has the fastest light curve in the sample. Abstract

A detailed description of the apparent light curves of microlensed SNe Ia as extended and expanding sources is presented. We show that microlensing amplification can have significant effects on supernova observation. A model light curve is used to compare lensed and unlensed cases and we find that significant changes in shape can occur because of microlensing. We briefly discuss the probability of observing such effects as well. Abstract

The Asiago Supernova Catalog is used to carry out a comparative study of supernova absolute-magnitude distributions. An overview of the absolute magnitudes of the supernovae in the current observational sample is presented, and the evidence for subluminous and overluminous events is examined. The fraction of supernovae that are underluminous (M_B > -15) appears to be higher (perhaps much higher) than one fifth but it remains very uncertain. The fraction that are overluminous (M_B < -20) is lower (probably much lower) than 0.01. The absolute-magnitude distributions for each supernova type, restricted to events within 1 Gpc, are compared. Although these distributions are affected by observational bias in favor of the more luminous events, they are useful for comparative studies. We find mean absolute blue magnitudes (for H_0=60) of -19.46 for normal Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia), -18.04 for SNe Ibc, -17.61 and -20.26 for normal and bright SNe Ibc considered separately, -18.03 for SNe II-L, -17.56 and -19.27 for normal and bright SNe II-L considered separately, -17.00 for SNe II-P, and -19.15 for SNe IIn., Comment: 27 pages, accepted for publication by the Astronomical Journal (Feb. 2002)

Abstract

The objective of this study was to determine the diagnostic ability of serum amyloid A (SAA) and fibrinogen for early detection of surgical site infection (SSI) after equine internal fixation. Horses undergoing internal fixation for fracture, arthrodesis, or osteotomy with internal fixation for limb deformity were included in the study. SAA and fibrinogen were measured on blood samples preoperatively and on days 1, 3, 5, 7, 10, and 14 postoperatively. Statistical analysis included use of Spearman's rank correlation, logistic regression, and calculating the area under the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve. SAA and fibrinogen measurements were both associated with SSI, with SAA being considered an excellent marker (area under the ROC curve 0.8) and fibrinogen being considered acceptable (

31. Computed tomographic guidance for internal fixation of type II distal phalangeal fractures in 51 horses.

Abstract

Background: Type II distal phalanx (P3) fractures are a well‐described cause of lameness in horses. Reports on outcome following internal fixation of type II P3 fractures are lacking, and with little emphasis on complications. Objective: To describe a technique for internal fixation of type II P3 fractures, and evaluate whether specific variables influenced post‐operative complications or a horse's ability to return to work. Study design: Retrospective case series. Methods: Medical records of 51 horses with CT‐guided internal fixation of type II P3 fractures were reviewed. Outcome data were acquired from race records and telephone interviews. Associations between independent variables and outcome were analysed using multivariable logistic regression. Results: Eighty‐six per cent (95% CI 74%‐94%; n = 44) successfully returned to work. Implant infection (n = 15) and distal interphalangeal joint osteoarthritis (n = 9) were the most common complications, with the latter reducing the likelihood of success (OR = 0.09, 95% CI 0.01‐0.7, P =.02). Implant infection increased the time to return to work (HR = 0.5, 95% CI 0.2‐0.9, P =.03). The odds of delayed infection decreased by filling the hoof defect with acrylic hoof adhesive rather than poly(methyl methacrylate) and deeply countersinking the screw head (OR = 0.08, 95% CI 0.02‐0.38, P =.001); the individual effect of each treatment is unknown. Radiographic healing was not associated with likelihood of success. Main limitations: Study limitations included variation in follow‐up methods, lack of control population for comparison and lack of randomisation of treatment protocols. Conclusions: Internal fixation of type II P3 fractures is an effective treatment that allows horses to return to athletic use, with similar improved success rates as those reported for conservative management. Infection rates were reduced by deeply countersinking the screw head and filling the hoof defect with an acrylic that mimics hoof wall flexibility and provides a secure seal. Abstract

Posttraumatic osteoarthritis is a disabling condition impacting the mostly young and active population. In the present study, we investigated the impact of intra‐articular sprifermin, a recombinant truncated fibroblast growth factor 18, on the outcome of microfracture treatment, a widely used surgical technique to enhance cartilage healing at the site of injury. For this study, we created a cartilage defect and performed microfracture treatment in fetlock joints of 18 horses, treated joints with one of three doses of sprifermin (10, 30, or 100 μg) or with saline, hyaluronan, and evaluated animals functional and structural outcomes over 24 weeks. For primary outcome measures, we performed histological evaluations and gene expression analysis of aggrecan, collagen types I and II, and cartilage oligomeric matrix protein in three regions of interest. As secondary outcome measures, we examined animals' lameness, performed arthroscopic, radiographic, and computed tomography (CT) scan imaging and gross morphology assessment. We detected the highest treatment benefit following 100 μg sprifermin treatment. The overall histological assessment showed an improvement in the kissing region, and the expression of constitutive genes showed a concentration‐dependent enhancement, especially in the peri‐lesion area. We detected a significant improvement in lameness scores, arthroscopic evaluations, radiography, and CT scans following sprifermin treatment when results from three dose‐treatment groups were combined. Our results demonstrated, for the first time, an enhancement on microfracture outcomes following sprifermin treatment suggesting a cartilage regenerative role and a potential benefit of sprifermin treatment in early cartilage injuries.
