Increasing air conditioner use for cooling indoor spaces has the potential to be a primary driver of global greenhouse gas emissions. Moving indoor air with residential fans can raise the temperature threshold at which air conditioning needs to be turned on to maintain the thermal comfort of building occupants. We investigate whether fans can be used to reduce air conditioner use and associated greenhouse gas emissions.We developed an integrated framework, featuring a dynamic adaptive thermal comfort model with a geographical information system-based spatially gridded map of Australia, further complemented with census data. We assessed the change in energy use and associated greenhouse gas emissions for five scenarios of air conditioner and fan use: an air conditioner-only scenario (no fans); and four fan-first scenarios with fans operating at speeds of 0·1 m/s, 0·3 m/s, 0·8 m/s, and 1·2 m/s, with air conditioning used only once the upper temperature threshold for thermal discomfort is exceeded. For each day of the selected case study year, we estimated the upper temperature limit for thermal comfort and the number of hours in which air conditioning would be switched on.The thermal comfort threshold was increased by the use of fans compared with air conditioner use alone. We found that widespread indoor fan use had the potential to reduce energy demand and greenhouse gas emissions attributable to air conditioner use, without compromising thermal comfort. Taking an annual perspective, the use of fans with air speeds of 1·2 m/s compared with air conditioner use alone resulted in a 76% reduction in energy use (from 5592 GWh to 1344 GWh) and associated greenhouse gas emissions (5091 kilotonnes to 1208 kilotonnes).A common strategy to cope with hot weather is the use of air conditioners, which feed a cycle of high electricity consumption, often delivered by fossil fuel power stations that in turn contribute to further increases in emissions. Several research studies have ranked indoor pollution among the top environmental risks to public health in recent years. Good indoor air quality is an essential component of a healthy indoor environment and significantly affects human health and well-being. Poor air quality in such environments may cause respiratory disease for millions of pupils around the globe and, in the current pandemic-dominated era, require ever more urgent actions to tackle the burden of its impacts.\ud The poor indoor quality in such environments could result from poor management, operation, maintenance, and cleaning. Pupils are a different segment of the population from adults in many ways, and they are more exposed to the poor indoor environment: They breathe in more air per unit weight and are more sensitive to heat/cold and moisture. Thus, their vulnerability is higher than adults, and poor conditions may affect proper development.\ud However, a healthy learning environment can reduce the absence rate, improves test scores, and enhances pupil/teacher learning/teaching productivity. In this article, we analyzed recent literature on indoor air quality and health in schools, with the primary focus on ventilation, thermal comfort, productivity, and exposure risk. This study conducts a comprehensive review to summarizes the existing knowledge to highlight the latest research and solutions and proposes a roadmap for the future school environment. In conclusion, we summarize the critical limitations of the existing studies, reveal insights for future research directions, and propose a roadmap for further improvements in school air quality. More parameters and specific data should be obtained from in-site measurements to get a more in-depth understanding at contaminant characteristics. Meanwhile, site-specific strategies for different school locations, such as proximity to transportation routes and industrial areas, should be developed to suit the characteristics of schools in different regions. The socio-economic consequences of health and performance effects on children in classrooms should be considered. There is a great need for more comprehensive studies with larger sample sizes to study on environmental health exposure, student performance, and indoor satisfaction. More complex mitigation measures should be evaluated by considering energy efficiency, IAQ and health effects.

This paper presents results of a longitudinal field study which aims to investigate adaptive comfort behaviours (i.e. turning on air-conditioner, turning on fans and opening windows or doors) in residential buildings. Field measurements were conducted in 43 homes in Tianjin, northern China, from Spring through early Winter in 2016. Occupants' ‘right-here-right-now' thermal perception and adaptive comfort behaviours were collected through online questionnaires delivered to their smartphones. Results indicated that clothing insulation adjustment was the requisite adaptive behaviour to attain thermal comfort. Clothing insulation was more climate-responsive in Tianjin's autumn than in summer. Statistical models were developed to predict the likelihood of various thermally adaptive behaviours with regard to outdoor air temperatures. An outdoor air temperature of 25.2°C was associated with maximum use of windows/doors for comfort ventilation and minimum use of air conditioning (AC). When outdoor air temperature exceeded 32.5°C, 50% of occupants turned on AC for cooling.

Hot ambient conditions and associated heat stress can increase mortality and morbidity, as well as increase adverse pregnancy outcomes and negatively affect mental health. High heat stress can also reduce physical work capacity and motor-cognitive performances, with consequences for productivity, and increase the risk of occupational health problems. Almost half of the global population and more than 1 billion workers are exposed to high heat episodes and about a third of all exposed workers have negative health effects. However, excess deaths and many heat-related health risks are preventable, with appropriate heat action plans involving behavioural strategies and biophysical solutions. Extreme heat events are becoming permanent features of summer seasons worldwide, causing many excess deaths. Heat-related morbidity and mortality are projected to increase further as climate change progresses, with greater risk associated with higher degrees of global warming. Particularly in tropical regions, increased warming might mean that physiological limits related to heat tolerance (survival) will be reached regularly and more often in coming decades. Climate change is interacting with other trends, such as population growth and ageing, urbanisation, and socioeconomic development, that can either exacerbate or ameliorate heat-related hazards. Urban temperatures are further enhanced by anthropogenic heat from vehicular transport and heat waste from buildings. Although there is some evidence of adaptation to increasing temperatures in high-income countries, projections of a hotter future suggest that without investment in research and risk management actions, heat-related morbidity and mortality are likely to increase.

Heat extremes (ie, heatwaves) already have a serious impact on human health, with ageing, poverty, and chronic illnesses as aggravating factors. As the global community seeks to contend with even hotter weather in the future as a consequence of global climate change, there is a pressing need to better understand the most effective prevention and response measures that can be implemented, particularly in low-resource settings. In this Series paper, we describe how a future reliance on air conditioning is unsustainable and further marginalises the communities most vulnerable to the heat. We then show that a more holistic understanding of the thermal environment at the landscape and urban, building, and individual scales supports the identification of numerous sustainable opportunities to keep people cooler. We summarise the benefits (eg, effectiveness) and limitations of each identified cooling strategy, and recommend optimal interventions for settings such as aged care homes, slums, workplaces, mass gatherings, refugee camps, and playing sport. The integration of this information into well communicated heat action plans with robust surveillance and monitoring is essential for reducing the adverse health consequences of current and future extreme heat.

In a field study conducted in office settings in Sydney, Australia, background survey and right-here-right-now thermal comfort questionnaires were collected from a sample of office workers. Indoor environmental observations, including air temperature, mean radiant temperature, air velocity, and relative humidity, were also recorded and matched with each questionnaire according to the time and location. During exploratory data analyses, we observed that female subjects aged over 40 and 50 or younger registered significantly warmer sensations than other subjects, male and female, from other age ranges. To further explore this phenomenon, the sample of building occupants was classified into two groups-women of perimenopausal age (over 40 and 50 or younger) while the remaining respondents served as a reference group for comparison. Women in the perimenopausal age range demonstrated an increased perception of warmth (p < 0.01) and expressed thermal dissatisfaction more frequently (p < 0.01) than the reference group respondents who were exposed to the same indoor environmental conditions. The Griffiths method is widely used in thermal comfort studies to derive building users’ comfort temperature, or thermal neutrality as it is sometimes known. A single value (so called the Griffiths Constant, typically 0.5/°C) is prescribed as a representation of thermal sensitivity of building occupants to indoor temperature variations, which in turn is used to estimate indoor thermal neutrality from a subject's actual thermal sensation vote at a measured room temperature. Despite the Griffiths Constant of 0.5/°C having been used widely across the thermal comfort research literature and in some generic standards, the constant was derived exclusively from office building data and its applicability across different typologies is yet to be rigorously validated. The objective of this study is to quantify how sensitive people are to temperature variations inside a building, and to investigate if thermal sensitivity differs between different contexts (including building typologies, modes of ventilation, outdoor climatic types, and genders). A collection of thermal comfort field studies in different building typologies containing around 11,500 datasets was used to statistically derive building users’ thermal sensitivity, i.e. the rate of change in thermal sensation per unit change in indoor temperature within a day. Our results suggest that occupant thermal sensitivity does vary depending on building typologies and building ventilation mode. In naturally ventilated spaces users are about half as sensitive to temperature variations as in air-conditioned spaces. Age, gender and climate are found to be factors that can also influence thermal sensitivity of building occupants. Our findings imply that reliance on a universal thermal sensitivity value, the Griffiths Constant, in comfort temperature (neutrality) calculations should be avoided because it is in fact a variable.

Aging populations pose significant social challenges for many countries including China. The elderly spends most of their time inside built environments, so a better understanding of their thermal comfort indoors is important. This study investigated the perceptual and physiological responses of elderly subjects to different operative temperatures (21 °C, 25 °C, 28 °C and 31 °C). Their indoor thermal requirements were investigated, and results compared with those of young people. Sixteen healthy subjects aged 70+, including both males and females, participated in this experiment. In addition to thermal comfort perceptions, two physiological parameters, including skin temperature (local and mean) and electrocardiograph (ECG) were also monitored. Results showed that skin temperature and the ratio of LFnorm to HFnorm of ECG were sensitive to the ambient temperature. For comparative purposes, we refer to the previously published climate chamber experimental results of young college-age subjects also in Shanghai [1]. Neutral operative temperature (26 °C for a mean thermal sensation of “neutral”) and neutral skin temperature (32.2 °C for a mean thermal sensation of “neutral”) of the elderly sample in the present study was not different from that of young people. However, the elderly subjects were not as sensitive as the young college-age counterparts when it came to changes in operative temperature.

We assessed whether increasing airflow with an electric fan is similarly effective as decreasing air temperature with air cooling (AC) in preventing heat-related reductions in productivity, and elevations in body temperatures and discomfort in a warm/humid indoor environment. In 48 experimental trials, we compared the reduction in the human heat stress response of sixteen participants during 135 min of intermittent arm ergometry at a fixed heart rate of 110 beats min−1, from a simulated tropical environment (HOT; 30 °C, 70%RH; wind °C, 70%RH, wind °C, 70%RH, wind = 4.2 m s−1). Cumulative work was similarly improved (+11%) by FAN compared to AC. Likewise, reductions in rectal temperature, thermal sensation, and thermal discomfort were similar with the two different cooling strategies. Sweat losses in the FAN trial were higher compared to AC but lower than HOT without fanning. In conclusion, fanning offers an effective method for alleviating thermal stress and preventing productivity losses for workers exposed to environmental heat. Moving air instead of chilling it may require a little more sweating, but it can save electricity and hence lower greenhouse gas emissions compared to AC.

The quality of buildings can be assessed in terms of the indoor air quality, thermal comfort, lighting quality, acoustic comfort afforded the occupants, collectively referred to as Indoor Environmental Quality (IEQ). A major barrier to a more thoroughly representative audit of actual IEQ performance are the expense and complexity of the measurement instrumentation required. Rapid developments in sensor technology in recent years present the opportunity for continuous and pervasive IEQ monitoring to deliver truly representative characterisations of building performance at a modest cost. The last remaining obstacle to realising these developments seems to be a concern about instrument accuracy. In this paper we test the performance of a low-cost IEQ monitoring system (SAMBA) introduced in an earlier paper. Calibration data from 100 devices was analysed to calculate the standard error of the estimate as a measure of equipment accuracy. Those performance specifications were used in a Monte Carlo simulation based on measurements of thermal comfort parameters from 24 office buildings. Performance measures suggests the low-cost system, whilst not as accurate as laboratory equipment, is more than sufficient for building IEQ diagnostics and compliance assessments. Furthermore, the results of the Monte Carlo simulation show that continuous monitoring systems are better at characterising long-term performance than ad hoc measurement strategies using precision equipment. Low-cost pervasive monitoring technologies therefore offer a unique opportunity to improve our quantitative understanding of, and response to, indoor environmental quality issues.

Addressing two common challenges for building performance – reducing the carbon footprint attached to the provision of comfortable indoor environments, and improving the health and wellbeing of occupants – requires a more comprehensive understanding of how the indoor environments of buildings are operated. This paper introduces SAMBA, a state-of-the-art monitoring station for continuous, real-time measurements of indoor environmental quality (IEQ) parameters from occupants’ work desks. It combines a hardware solution that integrates a low-cost suite of sensors with a software platform designed to automatically analyse and visualize data for quick interpretation of IEQ performance by non-scientist. In addition to feeding a massive IEQ database for research, the resulting data may be used to better inform the metrological requirements for popular international IEQ rating schemes. This new era of indoor environmental monitoring based upon systems such as SAMBA affords a fundamentally new approach to built environmental field research that holds significant promise to improve building performance and indoor environmental quality and occupant satisfaction, health, wellbeing and performance.

The effect of the thermal environment on performance and productivity has been a focus of interest among indoor environmental researchers for nearly a century, but most of that work has been conducted in relative isolation from the cognate disciplines of human performance evaluation. The present review examines thermal environmental effects on cognitive performance research conducted across multiple disciplines. After differentiating performance from productivity, we compare the two dominant conceptual models linking thermal stress to performance; (1) the inverted-U concept and (2) the extended-U relationship. The inverted-U specifies a single optimum temperature (or its corresponding subjective thermal sensation) at which performance is maximised. In contrast, the extended-U model posits a broad central plateau across which there is no discernible thermal effect on cognitive performance. This performance plateau is bounded by regions of progressive performance decrements in more extreme thermal conditions. The contradictions between these opposing conceptual models might derive from various confounding factors at play in their underlying research bases. These include, inter alia, environment-related, task-related, and performer-related factors, as well as their associated two-way and three-way interaction effects. Methodological discrepancies that might also contribute to the divergence of these conceptual models are evaluated, along with the proposed causal mechanisms underlying the two models. The weight of research evidence reviewed in this paper suggests that the extended-U hypothesis fits the relationship between moderate thermal environments and cognitive performance. In contrast to the inverted-U relationship, implemention of the extended-U in indoor climate control implies substantial reductions in building energy demand, since it permits the heating and cooling setpoint deadband to expand across the full width of the thermal comfort zone, or even slightly further during emergencies such as peak demand events on the electricity grid. Use of personal comfort systems can further extend the thermostat setpoint range beyond the comfort zone.

This paper presents an uncertainty analysis of subjective thermal comfort measurement, which was overlooked in some subjective thermal comfort studies. Three chamber experiments were conducted to collect the data and to analyze how the uncertainty of subjective measurement is influenced by the survey instrument and the experiment protocol. Four widely-utilized subjective indicators were examined: thermal sensation, humidity sensation, draught sensation and thermal satisfaction. It was found that the Standard Uncertainty, defined as the Standard Error of the Mean, of subjective thermal comfort measurement would decrease with the increasing number of person-votes (number of subjects times votes per subject). When the person-votes were above 40, the Standard Uncertainty of subjective measurement was within 3% of the total scale length, confirming the precision and reliability of subjective thermal comfort measurement. It was found the measurement of thermal sensation/satisfaction and humidity sensation had similar uncertainty level, while the measurement of draught sensation had higher uncertainty. Discrete multiple-points scales (Likert) are recommended for subjective thermal comfort measurement since continuous scales enlarge intra-individual differences.

Research into human thermal perception indoors has focused on "neutrality" under steady-state conditions. Recent interest in thermal alliesthesia has highlighted the hedonic dimension of our thermal world that has been largely overlooked by science. Here, we show the activity of sensory neurons can predict thermal pleasure under dynamic exposures. A numerical model of cutaneous thermoreceptors was applied to skin temperature measurements from 12 human subjects. A random forest model trained on simulated thermoreceptor impulses could classify pleasure responses (F1 score of 67%) with low false positives/negatives (4%). Accuracy increased (83%) when excluding the few extreme (dis)pleasure responses. Validation on an independent dataset confirmed model reliability. This is the first empirical demonstration of the relationship between thermoreceptors and pleasure arising from thermal stimuli. Insights into the neurophysiology of thermal perception can enhance the experience of built environments through designs that promote sensory excitation instead of neutrality.

A key to the development of more effective interventions to promote movement and reduce physical inactivity in office workplaces may be to measure and locate individual's spatial movement. Using an activity space estimation method, high resolution location data collected from 15 office workers over 12 days were used to estimate and analyse the location and extent of their daily spatial movement whilst in an office work-based setting. The results indicated that the method, kernel density estimation, combined with location data offers significant opportunities to not only measure and compare spatial movement behaviours but also simultaneously identify the locations where the behaviours occur. Combined with other data streams, this method will allow researchers to further investigate the influence of different environmental characteristics on these behaviours, potentially leading the development of more effective, longer lasting interventions to promote movement and reduce stationary behaviour, ultimately improving the health of office workers.

Air conditioning (A/C) is generally responsible for a significant proportion of total building energy consumption. However, occupants’ air conditioning usage patterns are often unrealistically characterised in building energy performance simulation tools, which leads to a gap between simulated and actual energy use. The objective of this study was to develop a stochastic model for predicting occupant behaviour relating to A/C cooling and heating in residential buildings located in the Subtropical Sydney region of Australia. Multivariate logistic regression was used to estimate the probability of using A/C in living rooms and bedrooms, based on a range of physical environmental (outdoor and indoor) and contextual (season, day of week, and time of day) factors observed in 42 Sydney region houses across a two-year monitoring period. The resulting models can be implemented in building energy performance simulation (BEPS) tools to more accurately predict indoor environmental conditions and energy consumption attributable to A/C operation.

The assessment of local and short-term thermal discomfort in buildings has been widely investigated, and different metrics are available in the literature to predict the likelihood of dissatisfied people. These metrics are named right-here and right-now discomfort indexes and constitute the basis for evaluating long-term thermal comfort conditions in buildings. Well-known examples are the Predicted Percentage of Dissatisfied (PPD) part of the Fanger comfort model included in the ISO standard 7730 and the Overheating risk index (NaOR), built upon the EN adaptive thermal comfort model. This study proposes a new index for use with the ASHRAE adaptive thermal comfort model to fill a gap in the literature and standard. It is called the ASHRAE Likelihood of Dissatisfaction (ALD) and is obtained from a logistic regression of the right-here and right-now thermal comfort field data contained in the 1990s ASHRAE RP-884 database. The recent release of another, more extensive database of thermal comfort field studies, the ASHRAE Global Thermal Comfort Database II, provides an opportunity to validate ALD with an independent dataset and assess its generalisability. The successful external validation of ALD and its agreement with NaOR give support to the reliability of the novel right-here and right-now index and open to the possibility to use it for assessing short-term thermal comfort conditions in buildings, calculating long-term thermal comfort indices based on the ASHRAE adaptive model, optimising both the design of new buildings and renovations and for assessing the operational thermal comfort performance of existing buildings.

Thermal comfort research has been traditionally based on cross-sectional studies and spatial aggregation of individual surveys at building level. This research design is susceptible to compositional effects and may lead to error in identifying predictors to thermal comfort indices, in particular in relation to adaptive mechanisms. A relationship between comfort and different predictors can be true at an individual level but not evident at the building level. In addition, cross-sectional studies overlook temporal changes in individual thermal perception due to contextual factors. To address these limitations, this study applied a longitudinal research design over 8 to 21 months in eight buildings located in six countries around the world. The dataset comprises of 5,567 individual thermal comfort surveys from 258 participants. The analysis aggregated survey responses at participant level and clustered participants according to their thermal sensation votes (TSV). Four TSV clusters were introduced, representing four different thermal sensation traits. Further analysis reviewed the probability of cluster membership in relation to demographic characteristics and behavioural adaptation. Finally, the analysis at individual level enabled the introduction of a new metric, the thermal zone (Zt), which in this study ranges from 21.5 °C to 26.6 °C. The thermal sensation traits and person-centric thermal zone (Zt) are a first step into the development of new metrics incorporating individual perceived comfort into dynamic building controls for adaptive buildings.

Green infrastructure has the potential to cool urban environments and reduce the health burden due to heatwaves. This study develops a new method to quantify the benefits of urban heat mitigation technologies on human heat balance and population mortality. The Heat Health Impact (HHI) method is based on the state-of-the-art, multi-parameter model, Universal Thermal Climate Index (UTCI). A proof-of-concept exercise applied the HHI method to Sydney, Australia (population = 5.7 million). All available weather stations (10) were selected for full spatial coverage of the Sydney region (12,367 km2), and average hourly UTCI was calculated from meteorological observations spanning the entire year 2017. In the baseline analysis, average daily UTCI values were calculated for each of the 10 observation sites, and then spatially interpolated across the entire Sydney region for Feb 9, 2017, a representative heatwave day for Sydney. Three different greening intervention scenarios were investigated, and daily average change in UTCI (ΔUTCI) was calculated under each by comparison with the baseline scenario; this ΔUTCI was named Urban Cooling Effect (UCE). We implemented a health impact assessment methodology to estimate the change in attributable mortality due to each greening scenario for the Sydney GMR population for the representative heatwave day. Urban greening infrastructure scenarios reduced daily average UTCI between −0.2 and −1.7 °C on the heatwave day, with the health impact assessment indicating heat attributable deaths reducing up to 11.7 per day across the Sydney GMR compared to the baseline scenario. Our results highlight the health benefits of greening infrastructure to cool urban environments.

An experimental study on the influence of climatic thermal exposure on human thermal preference was carried out. Fifty-one Chinese female migrants were recruited in Australia and divided into two groups according to their recent climatic exposures. Group A comprised subjects who had arrived in Sydney's summer from China's winter within two weeks prior the experiment whereas Group B subjects had resided in Sydney for longer than two weeks. Subjects participated in an individual climate chamber experiment lasting 2 h. Preferred temperature was determined by adjusting the temperature every 10 min according to the subject's stated thermal preferences. It was found that the preferred temperatures/preferred standard effective temperatures (SET*) of Group A and Group B were 25.4/24.7 °C and 25.7/25.2 °C, respectively, and the corresponding mean skin temperatures were 32.8 °C and 33.2 °C. Furthermore, the individual differences and the effects of previous thermal experience were discussed. It indicated that the recent cold exposure would decrease the preferred temperature and the corresponding skin temperature. And it took about 1 week to adapt to a hot climate after transition from cold climate. The results of this study could provide supports and references for further exploration of thermal adaptation mechanism.

This study assessed the effect of wind on human thermal comfort by preforming outdoor urban climatic comfort simulations using state-of-the-art heat-balance models of human thermo-physiology (Universal Thermal Climate Index-UTCI). A series of simulations for computing "wind cooling potential" have been performed using the UTCI index temperatures. The comfort cooling effect of wind has been estimated by modelling with wind taken into account, and under calm wind (0.05 m/s) (ΔUTCI). A novel wind rose biometeorological data visualisation tool that integrates an additional thermal comfort dimension into the conventional climatology wind rose visualisation was developed in this study. The new wind rose graphic tool identifies "predominant" wind directions, and whether or not they are "desirable" from the human thermal comfort point of view. This tool's utility lies in its identification of the optimal building orientation in its surrounding urban morphology, based on the cooling potential of wind resources when enhanced ventilation is desirable for thermal comfort.
