International audience; SVOM (space-based multi-band astronomical variable objects monitor) is a mission developed within a Sino-French cooperation context and dedicated to the detection, localization and study of gamma ray bursts (GRBs) and other high-energy transient phenomena. Four instruments, operating in different wavelengths, are implemented on board in order to perform GRB detection and observations. The MXT instrument, developed by the National French Space Agency (CNES) in collaboration with CEA, MPE, IJCLab and the University of Leicester, is dedicated to the observation of GRB afterglows in the soft x-ray band and is one of the four instruments implemented on the Chinese satellite. First the design chosen of this instrument will be described and then the main results of the qualification campaign performed with the development models as EQM or STM and PFM models will be presented, as much at the instrument level as at the SVOM satellite QM level. Then, we will present how flight model design has been updated regarding the qualification campaign results. Furthermore, it will be presented how the performance of this kind of instrument is evaluated or measured through several models at sub system level or at instrument level. The next generation x-ray observatory ATHENA (advanced telescope for high energy astrophysics) requires an optics with unprecedented performance. It is the combination of low mass, large effective area and good angular resolution that is the challenge of the x-ray optics of such a mission. ATHENA is the second large class mission in the science programme of ESA, and is currently in a reformulation process, following a design-to-cost approach to meet the cost limit of an ESA L-class mission. The silicon pore optics (SPO) is the mission enabler being specifically developed for ATHENA, in a joint effort by industry, research institutions and ESA. All aspects of the optics are being addressed, from the mirror plates and their coatings, over the mirror modules and their assembly into the ATHENA telescope, to the facilities required to build and test the flight optics, demonstrating performance, robustness, and programmatic compliance. The SPO technology is currently being matured to the level required for the adoption of the ATHENA mission, i.e., the start of the mission implementation phase. The monocrystalline silicon material and pore structure of the SPO provide these optics with excellent thermal and mechanical properties. Benefiting from technology spin-in from the semiconductor industry, the equipment, processes, and materials used to produce the SPO are highly sophisticated and optimised.

The ATHENA (Advanced Telescope for High ENergy Astrophysics) mission is steadily progressing both in terms of system studies and technology developments. The mission is currently in Phase B1 and is maturing towards a successful mission adoption. This paper describes the mission status including the main accomplishments achieved during this phase in terms of convergence of system and technological aspects. An overview of the different system studies is given including the latest programmatic assumptions, emphasizing on the Mirror Assembly demonstration and the critical interfaces between the mirror and the different facilities that are being developed in tandem to the mission. The reference telescope design is also described based on the Silicon Pore Optics (SPO) technology. The main design choices are explained as well as the modelling performed to ensure that all technological and system level constraints are met from plate level all the way to the mirror assembly level. The resulting effective area performance and budgeting is briefly described and future improvements are identified.

The Athena mission, under study and preparation by ESA as its second Large-class science mission, requires the largest X-ray optics ever flown, building on a novel optics technology based on mono crystalline silicon. Referred to as Silicon Pore Optics technology (SPO), the optics is highly modular and benefits from technology spin-in from the semiconductor industry. The telescope aperture of about 2.5 meters is populated by around 700 mirror modules, accurately co-aligned to produce a common focus. The development of the SPO technology is a joint effort by European industrial and research entities, working together to address the challenges to demonstrate the imaging performance, robustness and efficient series production of the Athena optics. A technology development plan was established and is being regularly updated to reflect the latest developments, and is fully funded by the ESA technology development programmes. An industrial consortium was formed to ensure coherence of the individual technology development activities. The SPO technology uses precision machined mirror plates produced using the latest generation top quality 12 inch silicon wafers, which are assembled into rugged stacks. The surfaces of the mirror plates and the integral support structure is such, that no glue is required to join the individual mirror plates. Once accurately aligned with respect to each other, the surfaces of the mirror plates merge in a physical bonding process. The resultant SPO mirror modules are therefore very accurate and stable and can sustain the harsh conditions encountered during launch and are able to tolerate the space environment expected during operations. The accommodation of the Athena telescope is also innovative, relying on a hexapod mechanism to align the optics to the selected detector instruments located in the focal plane. System studies are complemented by dedicated technology development activities to demonstrate the capabilities before the adoption of the Athena mission.

The ATHENA (Advanced Telescope for High ENergy Astrophysics) mission studies and technology preparation are continuing to progress. The optics for this future space observatory is based on the Silicon Pore Optics (SPO), and is being evolved in a joint effort by industry, research institutions and ESA. The SPO technology uses the superb properties of monocrystalline Silicon, and spins in technologies developed for the semiconductor industry, benefiting from excellent materials, processes and equipment. In a holistic approach the technical and programmatic challenges of the ATHENA optics are being addressed simultaneously. A comprehensive Technology Development Plan (TDP) was defined and is being implemented to develop this novel X-ray optics technology. The performance, environmental compatibility and serial automated production and testing are being addressed in parallel, aiming at the demonstration of the required technology readiness for the Athena Mission Adopt ion Review (MAR) expected in 2022.

The Transient High Energy Sources and Early Universe Surveyor is an ESA M5 candidate mission currently in Phase A, with Launch in $\sim$2032. The aim of the mission is to complete a Gamma Ray Burst survey and monitor transient X-ray events. The University of Leicester is the PI institute for the Soft X-ray Instrument (SXI), and is responsible for both the optic and detector development. The SXI consists of two wide field, lobster eye X-ray modules. Each module consists of 64 Micro Pore Optics (MPO) in an 8 by 8 array and 8 CMOS detectors in each focal plane. The geometry of the MPOs comprises a square packed array of microscopic pores with a square cross-section, arranged over a spherical surface with a radius of curvature twice the focal length of the optic. Working in the photon energy range 0.3-5 keV, the optimum $L/d$ ratio (length of pore $L$ and pore width $d$) is upwards of 50 and is constant across the whole optic aperture for the SXI. The performance goal for the SXI modules is an angular resolution of 4.5 arcmin, localisation accuracy of $\sim$1 arcmin and employing an $L/d$ of 60. During the Phase A study, we are investigating methods to improve the current performance and consistency of the MPOs, in cooperation with the manufacturer Photonis France SAS. We are entering a new era for high energy astrophysics with the use of new technology to increase our ability to both survey and monitor the sky. The Soft X-ray Imager (SXI) instrument on the THESEUS mission will revolutionize transient astronomy by using wide-field focusing optics to increase the sensitivity to fast transients by several orders of magnitude. The THESEUS mission is under Phase A study by ESA for its M5 opportunity. THESEUS will carry two large area monitors utilizing Lobster-eye (the SXI instrument) and coded-mask (the XGIS instrument) technologies, and an optical-IR telescope to provide source redshifts using multi-band imaging and spectroscopy. The SXI will operate in the soft (0.3-5 keV) X-ray band, and consists of two identical modules, each comprising 64 Micro Pore Optics and 8 large-format CMOS detectors. It will image a total field of view of 0.5 steradian instantaneously while providing arcminute localization accuracy. During the mission, the SXI will find many hundreds of transients per year, facilitating an exploration of the earliest phase of star formation and comes at a time when multi-messenger astronomy has begun to provide a new window on the universe. We propose the development of X-ray interferometry (XRI), to reveal the universe at high energies with ultra-high spatial resolution. With baselines which can be accommodated on a single spacecraft, XRI can reach 100 $\mu$as resolution at 10 \AA (1.2 keV) and 20 $\mu$as at 2 \AA (6 keV), enabling imaging and imaging-spectroscopy of (for example) X-ray coronae of nearby accreting supermassive black holes (SMBH) and the SMBH `shadow'; SMBH accretion flows and outflows; X-ray binary winds and orbits; stellar coronae within ~100 pc and many exoplanets which transit across them. For sufficiently luminous sources XRI will resolve sub-pc scales across the entire observable universe, revealing accreting binary SMBHs and enabling trigonometric measurements of the Hubble constant with X-ray light echoes from quasars or explosive transients. A multi-spacecraft `constellation' interferometer would resolve well below 1 $\mu$as, enabling SMBH event horizons to be resolved in many active galaxies and the detailed study of the effects of strong field gravity on the dynamics and emission from accreting gas close to the black hole., Comment: White Paper submitted in response to ESA's Voyage 2050 call

The Large Area Telescope (LAT) on board the \Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope (\Fermi) shows long-lasting high-energy emission in many gamma-ray bursts (GRBs), similar to X-ray afterglows observed by the Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory \citep[\textit{Swift};][]{gehrels2004}. Some LAT light curves (LCs) show a late-time flattening reminiscent of X-ray plateaus. We explore the presence of plateaus in LAT temporally extended emission analyzing GRBs from the second \lat GRB Catalog \citep[2FLGC;][]{Ajello2019apj} from 2008 to May 2016 with known redshifts, and check whether they follow closure relations corresponding to 4 distinct astrophysical environments predicted by the external forward shock (ES) model. We find that three LCs can be fit by the same phenomenological model used to fit X-ray plateaus \citep{Willingale2007} and show tentative evidence for the existence of plateaus in their high-energy extended emission. The most favorable scenario is a slow cooling regime, whereas the preferred density profile for each GRBs varies from a constant density ISM to a $r^{-2}$ wind environment. We also compare the end time of the plateaus in $\gamma$-rays and X-rays using a statistical comparison with 222 \textit{Swift} GRBs with plateaus and known redshifts from January 2005 to August 2019. Within this comparison, the case of GRB 090510 shows an indication of chromaticity at the end time of the plateau. Finally, we update the 3-D fundamental plane relation among the rest frame end time of the plateau, its correspondent luminosity, and the peak prompt luminosity for 222 GRBs observed by \textit{Swift}. An X-ray Interferometer (XRI) has recently been proposed as a theme for ESA's Voyage 2050 planning cycle, with the eventual goal to observe the X-ray sky with an unprecedented angular resolution better than 1 micro arcsec (5 prad) [1]. A scientifically very interesting mission is possible on the basis of a single spacecraft [2], owing to the compact 'telephoto' design proposed earlier by Willingale [3]. Between the practical demonstration of X-ray interferometry at 1 keV by Cash et al. [4] with a 1 mm baseline and 0.1 arcsec effective resolution to a mission flying an interferometer with a baseline of one or more meters, an effective collecting area of square meters and micro arcsec resolution lie many milestones. The first important steps to scale up from a laboratory experiment to a viable mission concept will have to be taken on a scalable and flexible testbed set-up. Such a testbed cannot singularly focus on the optical aspects, but should simultaneously address the thermal and mechanical stability of the interferometer. A particular challenge is the coherent X-ray source, which should provide a wavefront at the entrance of the interferometer that is transversely coherent over a distance at least equal to the baseline, and bright enough. The Soft X-ray Imager instrument on the ESA THESEUS mission will provide high-energy imaging and spectroscopy observations of fast transients, providing significant steps forward in our understanding and characterisation of the early Universe. The instrument will utilise high performance microchannel plate optics (MPOs) and some of the first X-ray optimised CMOS devices to be used for space applications. The instrument team are currently developing a flight-like prototype instrument in order to enable full and appropriate characterisation of the instrument, and in particular the performance of candidate detectors. Here we present early results from the focal plane requirement study programme (including performance modelling and trade-off studies).

Einstein Probe is a Chinese Academy of Science (CAS) mission due for launch at the end of 2022 with its primary goals to discover high-energy transients and monitor variable objects. The mission consists of two instruments, the Wide field X-ray Telescope (WXT), a lobster eye X-ray telescope consisting of twelve identical modules; and the Follow-up X-ray Telescope (FXT), which is a traditional Wolter X-ray telescope, which is jointly developed by CAS, the European Space Agency (ESA) and the Max Planck Institute for Extraterrestrial Physics (MPE). Each of the WXT modules comprise of 36 micro pore optics (MPOs), with a 375 mm focal length, a field of view of more than 3600 square degrees, a goal of 5 arcmin resolution and working in the energy range of 0.5-4 keV. As part of the collaboration between CAS and ESA, the University of Leicester (UoL) is acting as a testing facility and repeatability check for several elements of the WXT optic development. This includes calibration of individual MPOs, temperature measurements on a prototype module, calibration of a qualification module and full calibration of one of the flight module optics. The majority of these tests will be performed in the two X-ray facilities at the University of Leicester, the Tunnel Test Facility (TTF) and the Vertical Test Facility (VTF). Presented here are details of the tests carried out and the results obtained from the first batch of individual MPOs and the plan for the thermal tests of the prototype in the TTF.

The Space-based multi-band astronomical Variable Objects Monitor (SVOM) is a Chinese – French satellite mission due to be launched in the summer of 2022. It is composed of four instruments: ECLAIRs, for detecting X-ray and gamma-ray transients (4-250 keV); GRM, a gamma-ray spectrometer (15 keV-5 MeV); VT, a visible telescope and the Microchannel X-ray Telescope (MXT). The MXT’s main goal is to precisely localize, and spectrally characterize X-ray afterglows of Gamma-Ray Bursts. The MXT is a narrow-field-optimised lobster eye X-ray focusing telescope comprising an array of 25 square Micro Pore Optics (MPOs), with a detectorlimited field of view of ∼1 square degree, working in the energy band 0.2-10 keV. The SVOM qualification model (QM) MXT optic (MOP) was designed and built at the University of Leicester, and is the first complete, lobster eye optic to be X-ray tested. We present results from the PANTER facility (MPE), where a full calibration of the QM MOP was carried out. The response of the optic was studied at seven energies from C-K to Cu-K, and the effective area at multiple off-axis angles at each energy was measured. The focal length of the MOP was confirmed and the PSF was studied on and off-axis. In addition, we present details of the modelling and analysis, which was used to calculate the results from the test campaign. The effective area and PSF are in good agreement with the modelling, indicating that the optic is performing as expected.

The current status of observations and theoretical models of gamma-ray bursts and some other related transients, including ultra-long bursts and tidal disruption events, is reviewed. We consider the impact of multi-wavelength data on the formulation and development of theoretical models for the prompt and afterglow emission including the standard fireball model utilizing internal shocks and external shocks, photospheric emission, the role of the magnetic field and hadronic processes. In addition, we discuss some of the prospects for non-photonic multi-messenger detection and for future instrumentation, and comment on some of the outstanding issues in the field.

Arcus provides high-resolution soft X-ray spectroscopy in the 12-50 Å bandpass with unprecedented sensitivity, including spectral resolution < 2500 and effective area < 250 cm^2. The three top science goals for Arcus are (1) to measure the effects of structure formation imprinted upon the hot baryons that are predicted to lie in extended halos around galaxies, (2) to trace the propagation of outflowing mass, energy, and momentum from the vicinity of the black hole to extragalactic scales as a measure of their feedback, and (3) to explore how stars form and evolve. Arcus uses the same 12 m focal length grazing-incidence Silicon Pore X-ray Optics (SPOs) that ESA has developed for the Athena mission; the focal length is achieved on orbit via an extendable optical bench. The focused X-rays from these optics are diffracted by high-efficiency Critical-Angle Transmission (CAT) gratings, and the results are imaged with flight-proven CCD detectors and electronics. Combined with the high-heritage NGIS LEOStar-2 spacecraft and launched into 4:1 lunar resonant orbit, Arcus provides high sensitivity and high efficiency observing of a wide range of astrophysical sources.

The Athena Mirror comprises an array of Silicon Pore Optics (SPO) modules which conform to the Wolter- Schwartzschild (W-S) geometry. In common with all Wolter Type I telescope mirrors the SPO modules produce stray X-ray flux which does not form a focused image but nevertheless impacts on the focal plane and introduces an extra background component in the X-ray images. This stray X-ray flux has 3 components, single reflections from the 2ndWolter I surfaces (the hyperbolic surface), reflections from the backsides of the reflecting membranes and support ribs in the SPO structure and scattering associated with the 2-reection imaged X-rays. We present a detailed analytical model for predicting the distribution of the stray X-ray flux in the Athena Mirrors and assess the impact of this on the sensitivity and imaging capability of the Athena Observatory.

Currently for the European Space Agency (ESA) ATHENA [1,2] mission Silicon Pore Optic (SPO) [3-8] Mirror Modules (MM) with a focal length of f = 12 m, are being developed and tested. The SPO MMs are also the baseline optic for the NASA medium explorer high-resolution spectroscopy mission Arcus [9-10] with f = 12 m that is currently undergoing a phase A study. SPOs are currently being tested at both the PTB laboratory of the BESSY synchrotron facility in Berlin using an X-ray pencil beam and the PANTER X-ray test facility in Neuried of the Max-Planck-Institut fur extraterrestrische Physik, Garching using a long vacuum beamline (distance source to optic ~120 m). The different types of measurements performed at PANTER to characterise the ATHENA and Arcus optics will be discussed. We present the 2SXPS (Swift-XRT Point Source) catalog, containing 206,335 point sources detected by the Swift X-ray Telescope (XRT) in the 0.3--10 keV energy range. This catalog represents a significant improvement over 1SXPS, with double the sky coverage (now 3,790 deg$^2$), and several significant developments in source detection and classification. In particular, we present for the first time techniques to model the effect of stray light -- significantly reducing the number of spurious sources detected. These techniques will be very important for future, large effective area X-ray mission such as the forthcoming Athena X-ray observatory. We also present a new model of the XRT point spread function, and a method for correctly localising and characterising piled up sources. We provide light curves -- in four energy bands, two hardness ratios and two binning timescales -- for every source, and from these deduce that over 80,000 of the sources in 2SXPS are variable in at least one band or hardness ratio. We present a ray tracing simulation of the Soft X-ray Imager (SXI) optics for the THESEUS observatory using the open-source McXtrace software package. THESEUS is a candidate mission within the Cosmic Vision programme of the European Space Agency and is designed to monitor high-energy transient events in the entire sky, therefore relying on fast slewing of the spacecraft. This capability will however impose large temperature variations and gradients across the optics which can cause thermoelastic deformation of the Soft X-ray Imager microchannel optics. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the impact on the point spread function (PSF) due to in-orbit temperature variation. Based on thermal analysis of the Soft X-ray Imager, perturbations to the ideal microchannel geometry are derived and provided as input to the ray tracer.

Athena, a future high-energy mission, is expected to consist of a large aperture x-ray mirror with a focal length of 12 m. The mirror surface is to be coated with iridium and a low Z overcoat. To define the effective area of the x-ray telescope, the atomic scattering factors of iridium with an energy resolution less than that (2.5 eV) of the x-ray integral field unit are needed. We measured the reflectance of the silicon pore optics mirror plate coated with iridium in the energy range of 9 to 15 keV and that near the iridium L-edges in steps of 10 and 1.5 eV, respectively, at the synchrotron beamline SPring-8. The L3, L2, and L1 edges were clearly detected around 11,215, 12,824, and 13,428 eV, respectively. The measured scattering factors were 1/43 % smaller than the corresponding values reported by Henke et al., likely due to the presence of an overlayer on the iridium coating, and were consistent with those measured by Graessle et al. The angular dependence of the reflectivity measured indicates that the iridium surface was extremely smooth, with a surface roughness of 0.3 nm.

The complete Swift Burst Alert Telescope and X-Ray Telescope light curves of 118 gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) with known redshifts were fitted using the physical model of GRB pulses by Willingale et al. to produce a total of 607 pulses. We compute the pulse luminosity function utilizing three GRB formation rate models: a progenitor that traces the cosmic star formation rate density (CSFRD) with either a single population of GRBs, coupled to various evolutionary parameters, or a bimodal population of high- and low-luminosity GRBs, and a direct fit to the GRB formation rate excluding any a priori assumptions. We find that a single population of GRB pulses with an evolving luminosity function is preferred over all other univariate evolving GRB models, or bimodal luminosity functions in reproducing the observed GRB pulse L-z distribution and that the magnitude of the evolution in brightness is consistent with studies that utilize only the brightest GRB pulses. We determine that the appearance of a GRB formation rate density evolution component is an artifact of poor parametrization of the CSFRD at high redshifts rather than indicating evolution in the formation rate of early epoch GRBs. We conclude that the single brightest region of a GRB light curve holds no special property, by incorporating pulse data from the totality of GRB emission we boost the GRB population statistics by a factor of 5, rule out some models utilized to explain deficiencies in GRB formation rate modelling, and constrain more tightly some of the observed parameters of GRB behaviour., Comment: 20 pages, 9 figures, 3 tables. Micropore optics have recently been implemented in a lobster eye geometry as a compact X-ray telescope. Fields generated by rare-earth magnets are used to reduce the flux of energetic electrons incident upon the focal plane detector in such a setup. We present the design and implementation of the electron diverters for X-ray telescopes of two upcoming missions: the microchannel X-ray telescope onboard the space-based multiband astronomical variable objects monitor and the soft X-ray instrument onboard the solar wind magnetosphere ionosphere link explorer. Electron diverters must be configured to conform to stringent limits on their total magnetic dipole moment and be compensated for any net moment arising from manufacturing errors. The two missions have differing designs, which are presented and evaluated in terms of the fractions of electrons reaching the detector, as determined by relativistic calculations of electron trajectories. The differential flux of electrons to the detector is calculated, and the integrated electron background is determined for both designs.

The recent discovery of the electromagnetic counterpart of the gravitational wave source GW170817, has demonstrated the huge informative power of multi-messenger observations. During the next decade the nascent field of multi-messenger astronomy will mature significantly. Around 2030, third generation gravitational wave detectors will be roughly ten times more sensitive than the current ones. At the same time, neutrino detectors currently upgrading to multi km^3 telescopes, will include a 10 km^3 facility in the Southern hemisphere that is expected to be operational around 2030. In this review, we describe the most promising high frequency gravitational wave and neutrino sources that will be detected in the next two decades. In this context, we show the important role of the Transient High Energy Sky and Early Universe Surveyor (THESEUS), a mission concept proposed to ESA by a large international collaboration in response to the call for the Cosmic Vision Programme M5 missions. THESEUS aims at providing a substantial advancement in early Universe science as well as playing a fundamental role in multi-messenger and time-domain astrophysics, operating in strong synergy with future gravitational wave and neutrino detectors as well as major ground- and space-based telescopes. Arcus, a Medium Explorer (MIDEX) mission, was selected by NASA for a Phase A study in August 2017. The observatory provides high-resolution soft X-ray spectroscopy in the 12-50 A bandpass with unprecedented sensitivity: effective areas of >350 cm^2 and spectral resolution >2500 at the energies of O VII and O VIII for z=0-0.3. The Arcus key science goals are (1) to measure the effects of structure formation imprinted upon the hot baryons that are predicted to lie in extended halos around galaxies, groups, and clusters, (2) to trace the propagation of outflowing mass, energy, and momentum from the vicinity of the black hole to extragalactic scales as a measure of their feedback and (3) to explore how stars, circumstellar disks and exoplanet atmospheres form and evolve. Arcus relies upon the same 12m focal length grazing-incidence silicon pore X-ray optics (SPO) that ESA has developed for the Athena mission; the focal length is achieved on orbit via an extendable optical bench. The focused X-rays from these optics are diffracted by high-efficiency Critical-Angle Transmission (CAT) gratings, and the results are imaged with flight-proven CCD detectors and electronics. The power and telemetry requirements on the spacecraft are modest. Arcus will be launched into an ~ 7 day 4:1 lunar resonance orbit, resulting in high observing efficiency, low particle background and a favorable thermal environment. We report on the design, development and measured performance of the Microchannel plate X-ray optics for the Mercury imaging X-ray spectrometer instrument, due to fly to Mercury on the ESA/JAXA BepiColombo mission in 2018. This paper serves as a progress update, identifying further work to finish the analysis of data from the flight model.

The SVOM (Space-based multi-band astronomical Variable Objects Monitor) French-Chinese mission is dedicated to the detection, localization and study of Gamma Ray Bursts (GRBs) and other high-energy transient phenomena. We first present the general description of the French payload composed of the ECLAIRs instrument, dedicated to GRB detection and localization and the MXT instrument, dedicated to GRB follow-up observation in soft X-ray band. Then the paper describes more in detail the design and the performances of the MXT instrument, finally a status of MXT development will be given.

The progress of X-ray Optics joint research activity of the European Union Horizon 2020 AHEAD project is presented here covering the X-ray optic technologies that are currently being worked on in Europe. These are the Kirkpatrick Baez, lobster eye micropore (SVOM, SMILE), slumped glass, and silicon pore (ATHENA, ARCUS) optics technologies. In this activity detailed comparisons of the measurements, of the different optics produced by the participating optics groups, obtained mainly at the MPEs PANTER X-ray test facility, are compared with simulations. In preparation for the ATHENA mission a study has been made to design the BEaTRiX X-ray test facility for testing individual silicon pore optics mirror modules, and the realization of the facility is now on going. A zone plate collimating optics developed for PANTER is being studied, optimized, and tested at PANTER. This zone plate will be used for characterising a high quality optics module in a parallel beam to verify the BEaTriX performance. Several of the measurements and selected results are presented here.

This paper, “Reducing the optical and x-ray stray light In the ESA XMM telescopes," was presented as part of International Conference on Space Optics—ICSO 1997, held in Toulouse, France.

THESEUS is a space mission concept aimed at exploiting Gamma-Ray Bursts for investigating the early Universe and at providing a substantial advancement of multi-messenger and time-domain astrophysics. These goals will be achieved through a unique combination of instruments allowing GRB and X-ray transient detection over a broad field of view (more than 1sr) with 0.5¿1 arcmin localization, an energy band extending from several MeV down to 0.3¿keV and high sensitivity to transient sources in the soft X-ray domain, as well as on-board prompt (few minutes) follow-up with a 0.7¿m class IR telescope with both imaging and spectroscopic capabilities. THESEUS will be perfectly suited for addressing the main open issues in cosmology such as, e.g., star formation rate and metallicity evolution of the inter-stellar and intra-galactic medium up to redshift 10, signatures of Pop III stars, sources and physics of re-ionization, and the faint end of the galaxy luminosity function. In addition, it will provide unprecedented capability to monitor the X-ray variable sky, thus detecting, localizing, and identifying the electromagnetic counterparts to sources of gravitational radiation, which may be routinely detected in the late ¿20s/early ¿30s by next generation facilities like aLIGO/ aVirgo, eLISA, KAGRA, and Einstein Telescope. The Smart X-ray Optics (SXO) Basic Technology project started in April 2006 and will end in October 2010. The aim is to develop new technologies in the field of X-ray focusing, in particular the application of active and adaptive optics. While very major advances have been made in active/adaptive astronomical optics for visible light, little was previously achieved for X-ray optics where the technological challenges differ because of the much shorter wavelengths involved. The field of X-ray astronomy has been characterized by the development and launch of ever larger observatories with the culmination in the European Space Agency’s XMM-Newton and NASA's Chandra missions which are currently operational. XMM-Newton uses a multi-nested structure to provide modest angular resolution (∼10 arcsec) but large effective area, while Chandra sacrifices effective area to achieve the optical stability necessary to provide sub-arc second resolution. Currently the European Space Agency (ESA) is engaged in studies of the next generation of X-ray space observatories, with the aim of producing telescopes with increased sensitivity and resolution. To achieve these aims several telescopes have been proposed, for example ESA and NASA’s combined International X-ray Observatory (IXO), aimed at spectroscopy, and NASA’s Generation-X. In the field of X-ray astronomy sub 0.2 arcsecond resolution with high efficiency would be very exciting. Such resolution is unlikely to be achieved by anything other than an active system. The benefits of a such a high resolution would be important for a range of astrophysics subjects, for example the potential angular resolution offered by active X-ray optics could provide unprecedented structural imaging detail of the Solar Wind bowshock interaction of comets, planets and similar objects and auroral phenomena throughout the Solar system using an observing platform in low Earth orbit. A major aim of the SXO project was to investigate the production of thin actively controlled grazing incident optics for the next generation of X-ray space telescopes. Currently telescope systems are limited in the resolution and sensitivity by the optical quality of the thin shell optics used. As part of its research programme an actively controlled prototype X-ray thin shell telescope optic of dimensions 30x10cm has been developed to bench test the technology. The design is based on thin nickel shells bonded to shaped piezo-electric unimorph actuators made from lead zirconate titanate (PZT).

At the PANTER X-ray test facility of the Max-Planck-Institut fur extraterrestrische Physik a lot of effort has and will be devoted to develop, test and calibrate the optics of ESA’s Athena X-ray observatory. We will present and discuss the type of measurements that are and will be done at PANTER based on experience of testing and calibrating the optics of ROSAT, XMM-Newton as well as recently eROSITA. This encompasses the testing of single silicon pore optics and mini petals as part of Athena mirror assembly integration and testing efforts. Finally the testing of the complete Athena mirror during different stages of integration as well as the final calibration will have to be performed in a new upgraded X-ray test facility.

Long gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) with a plateau phase in their X-ray afterglows obeys a three-dimensional (3D) relation (Dainotti et al. 2016), between the rest-frame time at the end of the plateau, Ta, its corresponding X-ray luminosity, La, and the peak luminosity in the prompt emission, Lpeak, an extension of the two-dimensional Dainotti relation. This 3D relation identifies a GRB fundamental plane whose existence we here confirm. We extend the original analysis with X-ray data untill July 2016 gathering 183 Swift GRBs with afterglow plateaus and known redshifts. We compare several GRB categories, such as shorts with extended emission, SEE, X-ray Flashes, GRBs associated with SNe, a sample of only long-duration GRBs (132), selected from the total sample by excluding GRBs of the previous categories, and the gold sample, composed by GRBs with light curves with good data coverage and relatively flat plateaus. The relation planes for each of these categories are not statistically different from the gold fundamental plane, with the exception of the SEE, which are hence identified as a physically distinct class of objects. The gold fundamental plane has an intrinsic scatter smaller than any plane derived from the other sample categories. Thus, the distance of any particular GRB category from this plane becomes a key parameter. Additionally, we tested this 3D relations by using GRBs observed at high energy, namely the peak luminosity values derived by the Fermi-Gamma Ray Burst Monitor (GBM). The 3D relation is also confirmed for GRBs observed by the GBM, thus showing its independence from the energy range. Furthermore, we computed the several category planes with T*a as a dependent parameter obtaining for each category smaller intrinsic scatters (reaching a reduction of $24\%$ for the long GRBs). Future X-ray astronomy missions require light-weight thin shells to provide large collecting areas within the weight limits of launch vehicles, whilst still delivering angular resolutions close to that of Chandra (0.5 arc seconds). Additive manufacturing (AM), also known as 3D printing, is a well-established technology with the ability to construct or ‘print’ intricate support structures, which can be both integral and light-weight, and is therefore a candidate technique for producing shells for space-based X-ray telescopes. The work described here is a feasibility study into this technology for precision X-ray optics for astronomy and has been sponsored by the UK Space Agency’s National Space Technology Programme. The goal of the project is to use a series of test samples to trial different materials and processes with the aim of developing a viable path for the production of an X-ray reflecting prototype for astronomical applications. The initial design of an AM prototype X-ray shell is presented with ray-trace modelling and analysis of the X-ray performance. The polishing process may cause print-through from the light-weight support structure on to the reflecting surface. Investigations in to the effect of the print-through on the X-ray performance of the shell are also presented.

Discovery of protein biomarkers in clinical samples necessitates significant prefractionation prior to liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) analysis. Integrating traveling wave ion mobility spectrometry (TWIMS) enables in-line gas phase separation which when coupled with nanoflow liquid chromatography and data independent acquisition tandem mass spectrometry, confers significant advantages to the discovery of protein biomarkers by improving separation and inherent sensitivity. Incorporation of TWIMS leads to a packet of concentrated ions which ultimately provides a significant improvement in sensitivity. As a consequence of ion packeting, when present at high concentrations, accurate quantitation of proteins can be affected due to detector saturation effects. Human plasma was analyzed in triplicate using liquid-chromatography data independent acquisition mass spectrometry (LC-DIA-MS) and using liquid-chromatography ion-mobility data independent acquisition mass spectrometry (LC-IM-DIA-MS). The inclusion of TWIMS was assessed for the effect on sample throughput, data integrity, confidence of protein and peptide identification, and dynamic range. The number of identified proteins is significantly increased by an average of 84% while both the precursor and product mass accuracies are maintained between the modalities. Sample dynamic range is also maintained while quantitation is achieved for all but the most abundant proteins by incorporating a novel data interpretation method that allows accurate quantitation to occur. This additional separation is all achieved within a workflow with no discernible deleterious effect on throughput. Consequently, TWIMS greatly enhances proteome coverage and can be reliably used for quantification when using an alternative product ion quantification strategy. Using TWIMS in biomarker discovery in human plasma is thus recommended.

Gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) are most probably powered by collimated relativistic outflows (jets) from accreting black holes at cosmological distances. Bright afterglows are produced when the outflow collides with the ambient medium. Afterglow polarization directly probes the magnetic properties of the jet, when measured minutes after the burst, and the geometric properties of the jet and the ambient medium when measured hours to days after the burst. High values of optical polarization detected minutes after burst in GRB 120308A indicate the presence of large-scale ordered magnetic fields originating from the central engine (the power source of the GRB). Theoretical models predict low degrees of linear polarization and negligable circular polarization at late times, when the energy in the original ejecta is quickly transferred to the ambient medium and propagates farther into the medium as a blastwave. Here we report the detection of circularly polarized optical light in the afterglow of GRB 121024A, measured 0.15 days after the burst. We show that the circular polarization is intrinsic to the afterglow and unlikely to be produced by dust scattering or plasma propagation effects. A possible explanation is to invoke anisotropic (rather than the commonly assumed isotropic) electron pitch angle distributions, and we suggest that new models are required to produce the complex microphysics of realistic shocks in relativistic jets., Published as Wiersema et al. 2014, Nature 509, 201-204. Arcus will be proposed to the NASA Explorer program as a free-flying satellite mission that will enable high-resolution soft X-ray spectroscopy (8-50) with unprecedented sensitivity - effective areas of >500 sq cm and spectral resolution >2500. The Arcus key science goals are (1) to determine how baryons cycle in and out of galaxies by measuring the effects of structure formation imprinted upon the hot gas that is predicted to lie in extended halos around galaxies, groups, and clusters, (2) to determine how black holes influence their surroundings by tracing the propagation of out-flowing mass, energy and momentum from the vicinity of the black hole out to large scales and (3) to understand how accretion forms and evolves stars and circumstellar disks by observing hot infalling and outflowing gas in these systems. Arcus relies upon grazing-incidence silicon pore X-ray optics with the same 12m focal length (achieved using an extendable optical bench) that will be used for the ESA Athena mission. The focused X-rays from these optics will then be diffracted by high-efficiency off-plane reflection gratings that have already been demonstrated on sub-orbital rocket flights, imaging the results with flight-proven CCD detectors and electronics. The power and telemetry requirements on the spacecraft are modest. The majority of mission operations will not be complex, as most observations will be long ( 100 ksec), uninterrupted, and pre-planned, although there will be limited capabilities to observe targets of opportunity, such as tidal disruption events or supernovae with a 3-5 day turnaround. After the end of prime science, we plan to allow guest observations to maximize the science return of Arcus to the community.

Arcus is a NASA/MIDEX mission under development in response to the anticipated 2016 call for proposals. It is a freeflying, soft X-ray grating spectrometer with the highest-ever spectral resolution in the 8-51 A (0.24 – 1.55 keV) energy range. The Arcus bandpass includes the most sensitive tracers of diffuse million-degree gas: spectral lines from O VII and O VIII, H- and He-like lines of C, N, Ne and Mg, and unique density- and temperature-sensitive lines from Si and Fe ions. These capabilities enable an advance in our understanding of the formation and evolution of baryons in the Universe that is unachievable with any other present or planned observatory. The mission will address multiple key questions posed in the Decadal Survey1 and NASA’s 2013 Roadmap2: How do baryons cycle in and out of galaxies? How do black holes and stars influence their surroundings and the cosmic web via feedback? How do stars, circumstellar disks and exoplanet atmospheres form and evolve? Arcus data will answer these questions by leveraging recent developments in off-plane gratings and silicon pore optics to measure X-ray spectra at high resolution from a wide range of sources within and beyond the Milky Way. CCDs with strong Suzaku heritage combined with electronics based on the Swift mission will detect the dispersed X-rays. Arcus will support a broad astrophysical research program, and its superior resolution and sensitivity in soft X-rays will complement the forthcoming Athena calorimeter, which will have comparably high resolution above 2 keV.

SVOM is a French-Chinese space mission to be launched in 2021, whose goal is the study of Gamma-Ray Bursts, the most powerful stellar explosions in the Universe. The Micro-channel X-ray Telescope (MXT) is an X-ray focusing telescope, on board SVOM, with a field of view of 1 degree (working in the 0.2-10 keV energy band), dedicated to the rapid follow-up of the Gamma-Ray Bursts counterparts and to their precise localization (smaller than 2 arc minutes). In order to reduce the optics mass and to have an angular resolution of few arc minutes, a Lobster-Eye" configuration has been chosen. Using a numerical model of the MXT Point Spread Function (PSF) we simulated MXT observations of point sources in order to develop and test different localization algorithms to be implemented on board MXT. We included preliminary estimations of the instrumental and sky background. The algorithms on board have to be a combination of speed and precision (the brightest sources are expected to be localized at a precision better than 10 arc seconds in the MXT reference frame). We present the comparison between different methods such as barycentre, PSF fitting in one or two dimensions. The temporal performance of the algorithms is being tested using the X-ray afterglow data base of the XRT telescope on board the NASA Swift satellite.
