The study of outer halo globular cluster (GC) populations can give insight into galaxy merging, GC accretion, and the origin of GCs. We use archival Subaru Hyper Suprime-Cam (HSC) data in concert with space-based GALEX, IRAC, and Gaia EDR3 data to select candidate GCs in the outer halo of the M81 group for confirmation and future study. We use a small sample of previously discovered GCs to tune our selection criteria, finding that bright already-known GCs in the M81 group have sizes that are typically slightly larger than the Subaru PSF in our fields. In the optical bands, GCs appear to have colours that are only slightly different from stars. The inclusion of archival IRAC data yields dramatic improvements in colour separation, as the long wavelength baseline aids somewhat in the separation from stars and clearly separates GCs from many compact background galaxies. We show that some previously spectroscopically identified GCs in the M81 group are instead foreground stars or background galaxies. GCs close to M82 have radial velocities, suggesting that they fell into the M81 group along with M82. The overall M81 GC luminosity function is similar to the Milky Way and M31. M81’s outer halo GCs are similar to the Milky Way in their metallicities and numbers, and much less numerous than M31’s more metal-rich outer halo GC population. These properties reflect differences in the three galaxies’ merger histories, highlighting the possibility of using outer halo GCs to trace merger history in larger samples of galaxies.

Since 1986, about sixty Floating Production Systems (FPSs) have been installed in the US Gulf of Mexico (GoM). They include Spar, Semisubmersible, Tension Leg Platform (TLP) and Floating Production Storage and Offloading (FPSO) platforms. They have been installed in water depths ranging from 500 m to 3,000 m, and production rates ranging from 40,000 boepd to 250,000 boepd. A floating production platform is a major capital investment of a deepwater field development and presents a significant execution challenge. An Operator that opts to install a floating platform for a greenfield development must select a platform type, decide on a contracting strategy and establish credible cycle times for the Appraise, Select, Define and Execute phases of the field development. In their 2021 OTC paper (OTC 31115) the authors undertook a critical assessment of ten major field developments in the GoM, that were sanctioned between 2006 and 2014. They included all four major platform types. A comprehensive database of the field developments including host platform particulars, concept selection, contracting strategies, major engineering, fabrication and installation contractors and cycle times for the four development phases was presented for each project. In the current paper the authors add to the prior body of work, conducting a similar assessment of the seven floating platforms (Appomattox, Argos, Vito, King’s Quay, Anchor, Whale and Shenandoah) that were sanctioned between 2015 and 2021. Taken together, the two papers provide the industry with its most comprehensive accounting of the evolution of GoM floating production platforms, development strategies and cycle times. This information will assist Operators and Development Planners plan and benchmark future GoM deepwater developments with a floating platform. Emerging trends in GoM field developments, following the collapse of oil prices in 2014, and the industry pivot to Energy Transition are also addressed.

The Milky Way halo was predominantly formed by the merging of numerous progenitor galaxies. However, our knowledge of this process is still incomplete, especially in regard to the total number of mergers, their global dynamical properties and their contribution to the stellar population of the Galactic halo. Here, we uncover the Milky Way mergers by detecting groupings of globular clusters, stellar streams and satellite galaxies in action ($\mathbf{J}$) space. While actions fully characterize the orbits, we additionally use the redundant information on their energy ($\textit{E}$) to enhance the contrast between groupings. For this endeavour, we use $\textit{Gaia}$ EDR3 based measurements of $170$ globular clusters, $41$ streams and $46$ satellites to derive their $\mathbf{J}$ and $\textit{E}$. To detect groups, we use the $\texttt{ENLINK}$ software, coupled with a statistical procedure that accounts for the observed phase-space uncertainties of these objects. We detect a total of $N=6$ groups, including the previously known mergers $\textit{Sagittarius}$, $\textit{Cetus}$, $\textit{Gaia-Sausage/Enceladus}$, $\textit{LMS-1/Wukong}$, $\textit{Arjuna/Sequoia/I'itoi}$ and one new merger that we call $\textit{Pontus}$. All of these mergers, together, comprise $62$ objects ($\approx 25\%$ of our sample). We discuss their members, orbital properties and metallicity distributions. We find that the three most metal-poor streams of our Galaxy -- "C-19" ([Fe/H]$=-3.4$ dex), "Sylgr" ([Fe/H]$=-2.9$ dex) and "Phoenix" ([Fe/H]$=-2.7$ dex) -- are associated with $\textit{LMS-1/Wukong}$; showing it to be the most metal-poor merger. In order to backward integrate the orbits of Milky Way (MW) dwarf galaxies, much effort has been invested in recent years to constrain their initial phase-space coordinates. Yet equally important are the assumptions on the potential that the dwarf galaxies experience over time, especially given the fact that the MW is currently accreting the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). In this work, using a dark matter-only zoom-in simulation, we test whether the use of common parametric forms of the potential is adequate to successfully backward integrate the orbits of the subhaloes from their present-day positions. We parametrise the recovered orbits and compare them with those from the simulations. We find that simple symmetric parametric forms of the potential fail to capture the complexities and the inhomogeneities of the true potential experienced by the subhaloes. More specifically, modelling a recent massive accretion like that of the LMC as a sum of two spherical parametric potentials leads to substantial errors in the recovered parameters of the orbits. These errors rival those caused due to a) a 30\% uncertainty in the virial mass of the MW and b) not modelling the potential of the recently accreted massive satellite. Our work suggests that i) the uncertainties in the parameters of the recovered orbits of some MW dwarfs may be under-estimated and that ii) researchers should characterise the uncertainties inherent to their choice of integration techniques and assumptions of the potential against cosmological zoom-in simulations of the MW, which include a recently-accreted LMC., Accepted for publication in MNRAS

Renal denervation has been shown to lower blood pressure in the presence of antihypertensive medications; however, long-term safety and efficacy data from randomised trials of renal denervation are lacking. In this pre-specified analysis of the SPYRAL HTN-ON MED study, we compared changes in blood pressure, antihypertensive drug use, and safety up to 36 months in renal denervation versus a sham control group.This randomised, single-blind, sham-controlled trial enrolled patients from 25 clinical centres in the USA, Germany, Japan, the UK, Australia, Austria, and Greece, with uncontrolled hypertension and office systolic blood pressure between 150 mm Hg and 180 mm Hg and diastolic blood pressure of 90 mm Hg or higher. Eligible patients had to have 24-h ambulatory systolic blood pressure between 140 mm Hg and less than 170 mm Hg, while taking one to three antihypertensive drugs with stable doses for at least 6 weeks. Patients underwent renal angiography and were randomly assigned (1:1) to radiofrequency renal denervation or a sham control procedure. Patients and physicians were unmasked after 12-month follow-up and sham control patients could cross over after 12-month follow-up completion. The primary endpoint was the treatment difference in mean 24-h systolic blood pressure at 6 months between the renal denervation group and the sham control group. Statistical analyses were done on the intention-to-treat population. Long-term efficacy was assessed using ambulatory and office blood pressure measurements up to 36 months. Drug surveillance was used to assess medication use. Safety events were assessed up to 36 months. This trial is registered with ClinicalTrials.gov, NCT02439775; prospectively, an additional 260 patients are currently being randomly assigned as part of the SPYRAL HTN-ON MED Expansion trial.Between July 22, 2015, and June 14, 2017, among 467 enrolled patients, 80 patients fulfilled the qualifying criteria and were randomly assigned to undergo renal denervation (n=38) or a sham control procedure (n=42). Mean ambulatory systolic and diastolic blood pressure were significantly reduced from baseline in the renal denervation group, and were significantly lower than the sham control group at 24 and 36 months, despite a similar treatment intensity of antihypertensive drugs. The medication burden at 36 months was 2·13 medications (SD 1·15) in the renal denervation group and 2·55 medications (2·19) in the sham control group (p=0·26). 24 (77%) of 31 patients in the renal denervation group and 25 (93%) of 27 patients in the sham control group adhered to medication at 36 months. At 36 months, the ambulatory systolic blood pressure reduction was -18·7 mm Hg (SD 12·4) for the renal denervation group (n=30) and -8·6 mm Hg (14·6) for the sham control group (n=32; adjusted treatment difference -10·0 mm Hg, 95% CI -16·6 to -3·3; p=0·0039). Treatment differences between the renal denervation group and sham control group at 36 months were -5·9 mm Hg (95% CI -10·1 to -1·8; p=0·0055) for mean ambulatory diastolic blood pressure, -11·0 mm Hg (-19·8 to -2·1; p=0·016) for morning systolic blood pressure, and -11·8 mm Hg (-19·0 to -4·7; p=0·0017) for night-time systolic blood pressure. There were no short-term or long-term safety issues associated with renal denervation.Radiofrequency renal denervation compared with sham control produced a clinically meaningful and lasting blood pressure reduction up to 36 months of follow-up, independent of concomitant antihypertensive medications and without major safety events. A major objective of a greenfield deepwater field development with a host platform, is to achieve the first production milestone set at project sanction. A field development consists of subsurface characterization, reservoir depletion, drilling and completion, subsea production system, host platform and export system. Of these, the floating host platform is a major capital expense and presents a significant execution challenge. Over fifty deepwater floating platforms have been installed in the US Gulf of Mexico (GoM) since 1986, representing the four major platform options; spars, semisubmersibles, Tension Leg Platforms (TLPs) and Floating Production Storage and Offloading (FPSO) platforms, operated by International, Independent and National Oil Companies. They are installed in water depths ranging from 500 m to 3,000 m, with production capacities from 40,000 to over 250,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day (boepd). Over this period the technologies, operator, and supply chain capabilities to execute deepwater projects have matured. An operator embarking on a deepwater project must credibly benchmark cycle times for sequential field development stages (Appraise, Select, Define and Execute). Many variables determine these cycle times including reservoir characterization, fluid properties, estimated recovery, location, access to pipeline networks, water depth, subsea architecture, platform size and complexity and contracting strategy. To provide these benchmarks, the authors have undertaken a critical assessment of ten recent, producing deep and ultra-deepwater field developments in the US GoM, focusing on project execution of the floating platform. Selected field developments capture all floating platform types, several contracting strategies, a wide range of water depths, various reservoir geologies and field locations that cover the entire GoM. The information is intended to assist operators validate cycle times when planning a development, especially the Execute stage. In addition, the paper addresses emerging trends in deepwater GoM field developments following the oil price collapse in 2014 and 2020.

Background: The multicenter, international, randomized, blinded, sham-controlled RADIANCE-HTN SOLO trial (A Study of the ReCor Medical Paradise System in Clinical Hypertension) demonstrated a 6.3 mm Hg greater reduction in daytime ambulatory systolic blood pressure (BP) at 2 months by endovascular ultrasound renal denervation (RDN) compared with a sham procedure among patients not treated with antihypertensive medications. We report 6-month results after the addition of a recommended standardized stepped-care antihypertensive treatment to the randomized endovascular procedure under continued blinding to initial treatment. Methods: Patients with a daytime ambulatory BP ≥135/85 mm Hg and Results: A total of 69/74 RDN patients and 71/72 sham patients completed the 6-month ambulatory BP measurement. At 6 months, 65.2% of patients in the RDN group were treated with the standardized stepped-care antihypertensive treatment versus 84.5% in the sham group ( P =0.008), and the average number of antihypertensive medications and defined daily dose were less in the RDN group than in the sham group (0.9±0.9 versus 1.3±0.9, P =0.010 and 1.4±1.5 versus 2.0±1.8, P =0.018; respectively). Despite less intensive standardized stepped-care antihypertensive treatment, RDN reduced daytime ambulatory systolic BP to a greater extent than sham (−18.1±12.2 versus −15.6±13.2 mm Hg, respectively; difference adjusted for baseline BP and number of medications: −4.3 mm Hg, 95% confidence interval, −7.9 to −0.6, P =0.024). There were no major adverse events in either group through 6 months. Conclusions: The BP-lowering effect of endovascular ultrasound RDN was maintained at 6 months with less prescribed antihypertensive medications compared with a sham control. Recent progress in constraining the massive accretions (>1:10) experienced by the Milky Way (MW) and the Andromeda galaxy (M31) offers an opportunity to understand the dwarf galaxy population of the Local Group. Using zoom-in dark matter-only simulations of MW-mass haloes and concentrating on subhaloes that are thought to be capable of hosting dwarf galaxies, we demonstrate that the infall of a massive progenitor is accompanied with the accretion and destruction of a large number of subhaloes. Massive accreted progenitors do not increase the total number of infalling subhaloes onto a MW-mass host, but instead focus surrounding subhaloes onto the host causing a clustering in the infall time of subhaloes. This leads to a temporary elevation in the number of subhaloes as well as changes in their cumulative radial profile within the virial radius of the host. Surviving associated subhaloes with a massive progenitor have a large diversity in their orbits. We find that the star formation quenching times of Local Group dwarf spheroidal galaxies ($10^{5} \mathrm{M_{\odot}} \lesssim \mathrm{M}_{*} \lesssim 10^{7} \mathrm{M_{\odot}}$) are clustered around the times of the most massive accretions suffered by the MW and M31. Our results imply that a) the quenching time of dwarf spheroidals is a good proxy of their infall time and b) the absence of recently quenched satellites around M31 suggests that M33 is not on its first infall and was accreted much earlier., Accepted for publication in MNRAS. We investigate whether the considerable diversity in the satellite populations of nearby Milky Way (MW)-mass galaxies is connected with the diversity in their host's merger histories. Analyzing 8 nearby galaxies with extensive observations of their satellite populations and stellar halos, we characterize each galaxy's merger history using the metric of its most dominant merger, $M_{\rm \star,Dom}$, defined as the greater of either its total accreted stellar mass or most massive current satellite. Background. The introduction of carbidopa-levodopa extended-release (CD-LD ER) capsules (Rytary®) did not go as smoothly as expected, largely due to difficulty around dose conversion from available immediate-release (IR) levodopa (LD) formulations. The dose conversion table in the CD-LD ER prescribing information was similar to the table used in the pivotal clinical trial and is considered by many prescribing HCPs to be less than optimal. By the end of the dose conversion period in that trial, dosing in 76% of subjects was adjusted for symptom control; roughly 60% of patients required a higher dose and about half required more frequent administration than the recommended TID dosing. Objective. The primary objective of our nationwide (US) survey was to determine the dose conversion strategy most commonly employed by CD-LD ER frequent prescribers. The survey also aimed to explore additional features regarding CD-LD ER use in clinical practice. Methods. A survey consisting of 21 multiple-choice questions was developed and administered to experts in the use of CD-LD ER, based on prescription volume. Results. Of the 394 HCPs who were invited to participate, 90 (23%) HCPs completed the survey. All respondents were aware of the dose conversion table; the largest group did not find the table to be helpful and did not use it to convert patients to CD-LD ER. The most common strategy in calculating the CD-LD ER dose was based on the total daily LD IR dose, with the majority of that group initiating dose conversion by doubling the total daily LD dose from CD-LD IR and administering CD-LD ER one less time per day. Conclusion. Overall, most survey respondents agreed that a good starting point for CD-LD ER conversion could be doubling the daily LD IR dose and administering it one time less frequently. Moreover, rapid patient follow-up after initial dose conversion to allow for further dose adjustments plays a critical role in achieving success. Gaining experience over time is important for satisfactory conversion.

For patients with Parkinson's disease, clinicians commonly assess duration of benefit for individual doses of levodopa in order to consider medication changes.To determine the mean duration of ON time per dose and mean duration of ON time without troublesome dyskinesia (WoTD) per dose of CD-LD IR vs. CD-LD ER in the ADVANCE-PD trial.We performed a post hoc analysis of the ADVANCE-PD trial. Mean ON time per dose and ON time WoTD was calculated at baseline and end-of-study (EOS). Changes were compared between CD-LD IR and CD-LD ER (Rytary®) treatment groups using an ANCOVA model.Mean (SD) baseline ON time per dose of CD-LD IR (n = 393) was 2.20 h. Patients randomized to double-blind treatment with CD-LD IR (n = 192) experienced an increase in mean ON time per dose from baseline to EOS from 2.24 h to 2.38 h. In comparison, patients randomized to double-blind treatment with CD-LD ER (n = 201) experienced an increase in mean ON time per dose from baseline (on CD-LD IR) to EOS (on CD-LD ER) from 2.17 h to 3.55 h. Conversion and optimization with CD-LD ER increased ON time per dose by 1.21 h more than optimization of CD-LD IR (p 0.0001). Similarly, CD-LD ER increased ON time WoTD per dose by 1.16 h more than CD-LD IR (p 0.0001).In the ADVANCE-PD trial, CD-LD ER significantly increased ON time per dose compared to CD-LD IR (+1.21 h, p 0.0001) and provided significantly more ON time per dose (3.55 h vs 2.38 h, p 0.0001).

NGC 300 is a low-mass disk galaxy in the Sculptor group. In the literature, it has been identified as a pure exponential disk galaxy, as its luminosity profile could be well fitted with a single exponential law over many disk scale lengths (Type I). We investigate the stellar luminosity distribution of NGC 300 using $Hubble$ $Space$ $Telescope$ (HST) archive data, reaching farther and deeper than any other previous studies. Color magnitude diagrams show a significant population of old red giant branch (RGB) stars in all fields out to $R\sim19$ kpc ($32'$), as well as younger populations in the inner regions. We construct the density profiles of the young, intermediate-aged, and old stellar populations. We find two clear breaks in the density profiles of the old RGB and intermediate-aged stars: one down-bending (Type II) at $R\sim5.9$ kpc, and another up-bending (Type III) at $R\sim8.3$ kpc. Moreover, the old RGB stars exhibit a negative radial color gradient with an up-bending at $R\sim8$~kpc, beyond which the stellar populations are uniformly old ($>$7~Gyr) and metal-poor ($\rm[Fe/H] = -1.6^{+0.2}_{-0.4}$ dex). The outer stellar component at $R\gtrapprox8$ kpc is, therefore, well separated from the inner disk in terms of the stellar density and stellar populations. While our results cast doubt on the currently established wisdom that NGC\,300 is a pure exponential disk galaxy, a more detailed survey should be carried out to identify the outskirts as either a disk or a stellar halo., 6 pages, 5 figures, 1 appendix, accepted for publication in A&A Letters

This paper is part of the special OTC session "Floating Memories-Look Back to Leap Forward" intended as a historic retrospective of the evolution of the four major types of floating production platforms: Floating Production Storage and Offloading (FPSO), Semisubmersible (FPS), Tension Leg Platform (TLP) and Spar, from their inception to the present day. The session includes a look ahead to the future of these floating platforms and what it will take to sustain their commercial viability as they adapt to headwinds from continuous volatility of oil and gas prices and competition from onshore tight oil projects.This paper's focus is the Semisubmersible Floating Production System (FPS). It chronicles the forty five year progression of FPS technology from its humble beginnings in 1975 as a converted Mobile Offshore Drilling Unit (MODU) deployed on the Argyll field in the North Sea in 80 m of water, to Appomattox, the most recent FPS, that began production in 2019 in 2250 m of water in the Gulf of Mexico (GoM) . It also touches briefly on the evolution of the FPS hull, mooring and riser systems and addresses future trends and prospects.From Argyll to Appomattox

Summary Background Catheter-based renal denervation has significantly reduced blood pressure in previous studies. Following a positive pilot trial, the SPYRAL HTN-OFF MED (SPYRAL Pivotal) trial was designed to assess the efficacy of renal denervation in the absence of antihypertensive medications. Methods In this international, prospective, single-blinded, sham-controlled trial, done at 44 study sites in Australia, Austria, Canada, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Japan, the UK, and the USA, hypertensive patients with office systolic blood pressure of 150 mm Hg to less than 180 mm Hg were randomly assigned 1:1 to either a renal denervation or sham procedure. The primary efficacy endpoint was baseline-adjusted change in 24-h systolic blood pressure and the secondary efficacy endpoint was baseline-adjusted change in office systolic blood pressure from baseline to 3 months after the procedure. We used a Bayesian design with an informative prior, so the primary analysis combines evidence from the pilot and Pivotal trials. The primary efficacy and safety analyses were done in the intention-to-treat population. This trial is registered at ClinicalTrials.gov , NCT02439749 . Findings From June 25, 2015, to Oct 15, 2019, 331 patients were randomly assigned to either renal denervation (n=166) or a sham procedure (n=165). The primary and secondary efficacy endpoints were met, with posterior probability of superiority more than 0·999 for both. The treatment difference between the two groups for 24-h systolic blood pressure was −3·9 mm Hg (Bayesian 95% credible interval −6·2 to −1·6) and for office systolic blood pressure the difference was −6·5 mm Hg (−9·6 to −3·5). No major device-related or procedural-related safety events occurred up to 3 months. Interpretation SPYRAL Pivotal showed the superiority of catheter-based renal denervation compared with a sham procedure to safely lower blood pressure in the absence of antihypertensive medications. We investigate the origin of the type III (up-bending) discs based on a sample of 1808 galaxies from SDSS and a sub-sample of 286 galaxies with HI data from ALFALFA. We examine how the type III fraction f3, the fraction of disc galaxies which host up-bending disc breaks, depends on other galactic properties. We confirm that f3 strongly depends on the stellar concentration of galaxies. We find that HI-rich galaxies with low spins tend to have significantly more type III disc breaks than control galaxies, which are matched in concentration and stellar mass. This trend is independent of the existence of strong bars or environment of the galaxies. This result is broadly consistent with predictions from theoretical simulations, and indicates in-situ star formation fueled by gas accretion to be an important mechanism that builds the outer discs of type III galaxies., Comment: 17 pages, key results in Figure 5, accepted for publication at MNRAS

Summary Background Early studies suggest that radiofrequency-based renal denervation reduces blood pressure in patients with moderate hypertension. We investigated whether an alternative technology using endovascular ultrasound renal denervation reduces ambulatory blood pressure in patients with hypertension in the absence of antihypertensive medications. Methods RADIANCE-HTN SOLO was a multicentre, international, single-blind, randomised, sham-controlled trial done at 21 centres in the USA and 18 in Europe. Patients with combined systolic–diastolic hypertension aged 18–75 years were eligible if they had ambulatory blood pressure greater than or equal to 135/85 mm Hg and less than 170/105 mm Hg after a 4-week discontinuation of up to two antihypertensive medications and had suitable renal artery anatomy. Patients were randomised (1:1) to undergo renal denervation with the Paradise system (ReCor Medical, Palo Alto, CA, USA) or a sham procedure consisting of renal angiography only. The randomisation sequence was computer generated and stratified by centres with randomised blocks of four or six and permutation of treatments within each block. Patients and outcome assessors were blinded to randomisation. The primary effectiveness endpoint was the change in daytime ambulatory systolic blood pressure at 2 months in the intention-to-treat population. Patients were to remain off antihypertensive medications throughout the 2 months of follow-up unless specified blood pressure criteria were exceeded. Major adverse events included all-cause mortality, renal failure, an embolic event with end-organ damage, renal artery or other major vascular complications requiring intervention, or admission to hospital for hypertensive crisis within 30 days and new renal artery stenosis within 6 months. This study is registered with ClinicalTrials.gov, number NCT02649426. Findings Between March 28, 2016, and Dec 28, 2017, 803 patients were screened for eligibility and 146 were randomised to undergo renal denervation (n=74) or a sham procedure (n=72). The reduction in daytime ambulatory systolic blood pressure was greater with renal denervation (−8·5 mm Hg, SD 9·3) than with the sham procedure (−2·2 mm Hg, SD 10·0; baseline-adjusted difference between groups: −6·3 mm Hg, 95% CI −9·4 to −3·1, p=0·0001). No major adverse events were reported in either group. Interpretation Compared with a sham procedure, endovascular ultrasound renal denervation reduced ambulatory blood pressure at 2 months in patients with combined systolic–diastolic hypertension in the absence of medications. This paper reports findings from a systematic search of the empirical literature from 2000 to 2020 on the assessment of creativity in narrative writing. It seeks to synthesise the designs, methods and findings on how different disciplines have gathered relevant data to the question of how creativity in writing might be assessed, and feedback made more effective. It draws together the established knowledge base around two research questions. The methodology for the systematic involved searches on five academic databases for relevant keywords, producing 1796 papers. Initial screening of the abstracts identified 97 studies for further scrutiny, and for which full texts were accessed for secondary screening based on the inclusion criteria. The final 39 papers judged to satisfy the selection criteria were subject to in-depth analysis and synthesis. The findings of the review reveal that four main techniques have been utilised in efforts to assess creativity in writing, each with their own merits and limitations, and a paucity of research in several crucial areas. The review indicates that, while several disciplines have contributed to the knowledge base in this area, few interdisciplinary studies exist that draw together multiple techniques and provide clear answers for the research questions used in the study. Furthermore, there is little empirical evidence suggesting that assessment improves student creativity with regard to writing, and new research in the field would be advanced by addressing explicit definitions of creativity, the practices of writing ‘experts’, and writing considered within its social and cultural context.

Recent work has shown that Milky Way-mass galaxies display an incredible range of stellar halo properties, yet the origin of this diversity is unclear. The nearby galaxy M81 $-$ currently interacting with M82 and NGC 3077 $-$ sheds unique light on this problem. We present a Subaru Hyper Suprime-Cam survey of the resolved stellar populations around M81, revealing M81's stellar halo in never-before-seen detail. We resolve the halo to unprecedented $V$-band equivalent surface brightnesses of 33 mag arcsec$^{-2}$, and produce the first-ever global stellar mass density map for a Milky Way-mass stellar halo outside of the Local Group. Using the minor axis, we confirm M81's halo as one of the lowest mass and metal-poorest known ($M_{\star} \simeq 1.16{\times}10^9 M_{\odot}$, [Fe/H] $\simeq {-}1.2$) $-$ indicating a relatively quiet prior accretion history. Yet, our global halo census finds that tidally unbound material from M82 and NGC 3077 provides a substantial infusion of metal-rich material ($M_{\star} \simeq 5.4{\times}10^8$ $M_{\odot}$, [Fe/H] $\simeq {-}$0.9). We further show that, following the accretion of its massive satellite M82 (and the LMC-like NGC 3077), M81 will host one of the most massive and metal-rich stellar halos in the nearby universe. Thus, the saga of M81: following a passive history, M81's merger with M82 will completely transform its halo from a low-mass, anemic halo rivaling the MW, to a metal-rich behemoth rivaled only by systems such as M31. Following the oil price collapse in mid-2014, the number of deepwater projects with a floating production host platform sanctioned in the GOM plunged to historic lows. In this period only three projects were sanctioned, Stampede (2014), Appomattox (2015) and Mad Dog 2 (2017). During this time cost compression across the industry reduced the average breakeven project costs from $70 per barrel to $45-$50 per barrel for many, but not all deepwater projects. An additional 10%-15% reduction in breakeven costs is required to get these stalled projects to a final investment decision. The industry is assessing and implementing many different strategies to achieve these additional cost efficiencies that include standardization, simplification, technology, collaboration and creative financing. Many of these are being addressed at a component level rather than at a field development level. A universal field development approach for deepwater GOM projects requiring a host platform is proposed that entails using the same building blocks for a majority of field developments that will: Provide a universal field development solution that accommodates a range of reservoir types, sizes and complexities Maximize flexibility for field layout, phased development and contracting options Reduce project delivery uncertainty, as universality facilitates standardization and repeatability Significantly improve discovery to First Oil cycle time while adapting to changing reservoir information during the development phases This paper presents a universal field development approach together with specific standardization and simplification recommendations of its key component building blocks; floating host platform and subsea system. Taken together these will provide the additional break even cost reduction, project cycle time improvement and increased certainty of project delivery to enable operators’ to confidently sanction a greater number of stranded deepwater Gulf of Mexico projects than is currently possible.

Although the proximity of the Andromeda galaxy (M31) offers an opportunity to understand how mergers affect galaxies, uncertainty remains about M31's most important mergers. Previous studies focused individually on the giant stellar stream or the impact of M32 on M31's disk, thereby suggesting many substantial satellite interactions. Yet models of M31's disk heating and the similarity between the stellar populations of different tidal substructures in M31's outskirts both suggested a single large merger. M31's stellar halo (its outer low-surface-brightness regions) is built up from the tidal debris of satellites and provides information about its important mergers. Here we use cosmological models of galaxy formation to show that M31's massive and metal-rich stellar halo, containing intermediate-age stars, dramatically narrows the range of allowed interactions, requiring a single dominant merger with a large galaxy (with stellar mass about 2.5 x 10^10 solar masses, the third largest member of the Local Group) about 2 Gyr ago. This single event explains many observations that were previously considered separately: M31's compact and metal-rich satellite M32 is likely to be the stripped core of the disrupted galaxy, its rotating inner stellar halo contains most of the merger debris, and the giant stellar stream is likely to have been thrown out during the merger. This interaction may explain M31's global burst of star formation about 2 Gyr ago in which approximately a fifth of its stars were formed. The dwarf satellites of `giant' Milky Way (MW)-mass galaxies are our primary probes of low-mass dark matter halos. The number and velocities of the satellite galaxies of the MW and M31 initially puzzled galaxy formation theorists, but are now reproduced well by many models. Yet, are the MW's and M31's satellites representative? Were galaxy formation models `overfit'? These questions motivate deep searches for satellite galaxies outside the Local Group. We present a deep survey of the `classical' satellites ($M_{\star}$$\geqslant$4$\times$10$^5 M_{\odot}$) of the MW-mass galaxy M94 out to 150 kpc projected distance. We find $only\ two$ satellites, each with $M_{\star}{\sim}10^6 M_{\odot}$, compared with 6-12 such satellites in the four other MW-mass systems with comparable data (MW, M31, M81, M101). Using a `standard' prescription for occupying dark matter halos (taken from the fully hydrodynamical EAGLE simulation) with galaxies, we find that such a sparse satellite population occurs in $, Comment: 9 pages, 4 figures, 1 table, published + additional reference

The stellar halo of a galaxy offer us a unique way of probing its merger history. In this paper, I outline a method of studying the average properties of the stellar haloes of galaxies as a function of stellar mass and galaxy type by stacking a large number of similar galaxies together from the large all-sky Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). By stacking nearly ~10,000 galaxies together in bins of stellar mass and galaxy type, we can study the surface brightness profiles of these galaxies to a depth of 31 magnitudes/arcsec2 in the r-band and out to a distance of nearly 100 kpc away from the center of a galaxy. Measuring the amount of accreted stellar material in the haloes of galaxies also allows us to test our present theories of galaxy formation.

Since the 2014 oil price collapse, the Oil and Gas industry has sought to reduce project development costs to align with a "lower for longer" commodity price scenario. Galaxies with Milky Way-like stellar masses have a wide range of bulge and black hole masses; in turn, these correlate with other properties such as star formation history. While many processes may drive bulge formation, major and minor mergers are expected to play a crucial role. Stellar halos offer a novel and robust measurement of galactic merger history; cosmologically-motivated models predict that mergers with larger satellites produce more massive, higher metallicity stellar halos, reproducing the recently-observed stellar halo metallicity-mass relation. We quantify the relationship between stellar halo mass and bulge or black hole prominence using a sample of eighteen Milky Way-mass galaxies with newly-available measurements of (or limits on) stellar halo properties. There is an order of magnitude range in bulge mass, and two orders of magnitude in black hole mass, at a given stellar halo mass (or, equivalently, merger history). Galaxies with low mass bulges show a wide range of quiet merger histories, implying formation mechanisms that do not require intense merging activity. Galaxies with massive 'classical' bulges and central black holes also show a wide range of merger histories. While three of these galaxies have massive stellar halos consistent with a merger origin, two do not - merging appears to have had little impact in making these two massive 'classical' bulges. Galaxy mergers are expected to influence galaxy properties, yet measurements of individual merger histories are lacking. Models predict that merger histories can be measured using stellar halos and that these halos can be quantified using observations of resolved stars along their minor axis. Such observations reveal that Milky Way-mass galaxies have a wide range of stellar halo properties and show a correlation between their stellar halo masses and metallicities. This correlation agrees with merger-driven models where stellar halos are formed by satellite galaxy disruption. In these models, the largest accreted satellite dominates the stellar halo properties. Consequently, the observed diversity in the stellar halos of Milky Way-mass galaxies implies a large range in the masses of their largest merger partners. In particular, the Milky Way’s low mass halo implies an unusually quiet merger history. We used these measurements to seek predicted correlations between the bulge and central black hole (BH) mass and the mass of the largest merger partner. We found no significant correlations: while some galaxies with large bulges and BHs have large stellar halos and thus experienced a major or minor merger, half have small stellar halos and never experienced a significant merger event. These results indicate that bulge and BH growth is not solely driven by merger-related processes.

The MaNGA Survey (Mapping Nearby Galaxies at Apache Point Observatory) is one of three core programs in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey IV. It is obtaining integral field spectroscopy (IFS) for 10K nearby galaxies at a spectral resolution of R~2000 from 3,622-10,354A. The design of the survey is driven by a set of science requirements on the precision of estimates of the following properties: star formation rate surface density, gas metallicity, stellar population age, metallicity, and abundance ratio, and their gradients; stellar and gas kinematics; and enclosed gravitational mass as a function of radius. We describe how these science requirements set the depth of the observations and dictate sample selection. The majority of targeted galaxies are selected to ensure uniform spatial coverage in units of effective radius (Re) while maximizing spatial resolution. About 2/3 of the sample is covered out to 1.5Re (Primary sample), and 1/3 of the sample is covered to 2.5Re (Secondary sample). We describe the survey execution with details that would be useful in the design of similar future surveys. We also present statistics on the achieved data quality, specifically, the point spread function, sampling uniformity, spectral resolution, sky subtraction, and flux calibration. For our Primary sample, the median r-band signal-to-noise ratio is ~73 per 1.4A pixel for spectra stacked between 1-1.5 Re. Mapping Nearby Galaxies at Apache Point Observatory (MaNGA) is an optical fiber-bundle integral-field unit (IFU) spectroscopic survey that is one of three core programs in the fourth-generation Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS-IV). With a spectral coverage of 3622 - 10,354 Angstroms and an average footprint of ~ 500 arcsec^2 per IFU the scientific data products derived from MaNGA will permit exploration of the internal structure of a statistically large sample of 10,000 low redshift galaxies in unprecedented detail. Comprising 174 individually pluggable science and calibration IFUs with a near-constant data stream, MaNGA is expected to obtain ~ 100 million raw-frame spectra and ~ 10 million reduced galaxy spectra over the six-year lifetime of the survey. In this contribution, we describe the MaNGA Data Reduction Pipeline (DRP) algorithms and centralized metadata framework that produces sky-subtracted, spectrophotometrically calibrated spectra and rectified 3-D data cubes that combine individual dithered observations. For the 1390 galaxy data cubes released in Summer 2016 as part of SDSS-IV Data Release 13 (DR13), we demonstrate that the MaNGA data have nearly Poisson-limited sky subtraction shortward of ~ 8500 Angstroms and reach a typical 10-sigma limiting continuum surface brightness mu = 23.5 AB/arcsec^2 in a five arcsec diameter aperture in the g band. The wavelength calibration of the MaNGA data is accurate to 5 km/s rms, with a median spatial resolution of 2.54 arcsec FWHM (1.8 kpc at the median redshift of 0.037) and a median spectral resolution of sigma = 72 km/s., Comment: 37 pages, 22 figures. Beginning in 1986, with the Placid Oil GC 29 development using a converted drilling semisubmersible in 460 m of water, the Gulf of Mexico (GOM) has been the incubator of deepwater Floating Production System (FPS) innovation. In the following 30 years over fifty FPSs that included Tension Leg Platforms (TLPs), Spar platforms (Spars) and Semisubmersible platforms (Semisubs), were sanctioned . Deepwater frontiers have been extended to over 2,900 m in that span. Many technical and commercial challenges have been managed and overcome in doing so. In the wake of the recent collapse in oil and gas prices and the specter of a prolonged period of low hydrocarbon prices, the industry is confronting perhaps its most formidable challenge in developing new deepwater fields in the GOM that require a host facility. Historically, all too frequent project execution cost and schedule overruns were masked by rising oil prices. In many instances, the topside to hull integration, platform installation and hook-up to mooring and riser systems and commissioning (Integration and Installation Phase) have been the root cause of overruns as they are high risk, high consequence activities with little float for schedule recovery. In the current low oil price environment there is little margin for error for Integration and Installation (I&I) miscues that rapidly erode project value. The authors have reviewed the critical I&I phase performance of thirty-three (33) TLP, Spar and Semisub platforms in the GOM and substantiated the review based on either first-hand experience, public domain information or in discussions with project team leaderships. The objective is to provide performance benchmarks, observations and recommendations for future FPS developments in the GOM to help avoid repetition of costly missteps and delays and incorporate lessons from those projects that have been well executed.

Natural germanium and selenium consist of, respectively, five and six stable isotopes. Several of these isotopes have considerable abundances and one should expect to observe the bands of at least six isotopic variants of germanium monoselenide (GeSe). In this paper, for the first time, the results of the high-resolution electronic spectrum of the main transition A 1 Π– X 1 Σ + of the specific isotopomer 74 Ge 80 Se, excited in a microwave discharge and recorded in the 33 500–26 000 cm −1 region using a Fourier transform spectrometer, is discussed. From the rotational analysis of 25 bands involving v″ = 0–12 and v′ = 0–7, accurate vibrational and rotational constants of the A 1 Π state are determined. The present study has revealed perturbations in the v′ = 6 and 7 levels of the A 1 Π state.

Despite the potential tolerability advantage of enteric-coated mycophenolate sodium (EC-MPS), no prospective, randomized trial has evaluated whether conversion from mycophenolate mofetil (MMF) to EC-MPS permits mycophenolic acid dose to be increased or gastrointestinal side-effects to be ameliorated. In a randomized, multicenter, open-label trial, kidney transplant recipients experiencing gastrointestinal side-effects either remained on MMF or switched to an equimolar dose of EC-MPS, adjusted 2 weeks subsequently to target the highest tolerated dose up to 1440 mg/day (EC-MPS) or 2000 mg/day (MMF). Patients were followed up to 12 weeks postrandomization. One hundred and thirty-four patients were randomized. The primary efficacy endpoint, the proportion of patients receiving a higher mycophenolic acid (MPA) dose at week 12 than at randomization, was significantly greater in the EC-MPS arm (32/68, 47.1%) than the MMF arm (10/61, 16.4%; P < 0.001). At the final visit, 50.0% (34/68) of EC-MPS patients were receiving the maximum recommended dose versus 26.2% (16/61) of MMF patients (P = 0.007). Kidney transplant patients receiving reduced-dose MMF because of gastrointestinal side-effects can tolerate a significant increase in MPA dose after conversion to EC-MPS. Patient-reported gastrointestinal outcomes with higher doses of EC-MPS remained at least as good as in MMF-treated controls.

Secondary hyperparathyroidism (SHPT) is a common side effect of end-stage renal disease (ESRD) and is associated with increased risk of fracture and cardiovascular events (CV). Current standard treatment includes dietary control, phosphate binders and vitamin D. However, many patients do not have their parathyroid hormone (PTH), calcium and phosphate levels controlled by this regimen. Cinacalcet is the first of a new class of calcimimetic drugs which suppress PTH production. Although there is convincing evidence of the impact of cinacalcet on serum biomarkers, the long-term clinical implications of treatment are less clear. The aim of this study is to estimate the cost-utility of cinacalcet as an addition to standard treatment of SHPT compared with standard treatment alone.A Markov model was developed to estimate the incremental cost-utility of cinacalcet. Uncertainty was explored through extensive sensitivity analysis.Compared with standard treatment, cinacalcet incurs average additional lifetime costs of pound21,167 per person and confers an additional 0.34 quality adjusted life years, resulting in an incremental cost-effectiveness ratio of pound61,890 (approximately euro89,000) per quality-adjusted life-year (QALY). Extensive one-way sensitivity analysis showed that cinacalcet was only likely to be considered cost-effective if the relative risk of mortality for people with very high levels of PTH was 2.2 compared with people whose PTH reached target levels, or if drug costs were considerably reduced. Probabilistic sensitivity analysis showed cinacalcet was very unlikely to be cost-effective at usual levels of willingness to pay in the National Health Service (NHS).Unless the cost of cinacalcet is considerably reduced, it is unlikely to be considered a cost-effective treatment for people with SHPT.

Background Renal denervation (RDN) may lower blood pressure (BP); however, it is unclear whether medication changes may be confounding results. Furthermore, limited data exist on pattern of ambulatory blood pressure (ABP) response—particularly in those prescribed aldosterone antagonists at the time of RDN. Methods We examined all patients treated with RDN for treatment-resistant hypertension in 18 UK centres. Results Results from 253 patients treated with five technologies are shown. Pre-procedural mean office BP (OBP) was 185/102 mmHg (SD 26/19; n = 253) and mean daytime ABP was 170/98 mmHg (SD 22/16; n = 186). Median number of antihypertensive drugs was 5.0: 96 % ACEi/ARB; 86 % thiazide/loop diuretic and 55 % aldosterone antagonist. OBP, available in 90 % at 11 months follow-up, was 163/93 mmHg (reduction of 22/9 mmHg). ABP, available in 70 % at 8.5 months follow-up, was 158/91 mmHg (fall of 12/7 mmHg). Mean drug changes post RDN were: 0.36 drugs added, 0.91 withdrawn. Dose changes appeared neutral. Quartile analysis by starting ABP showed mean reductions in systolic ABP after RDN of: 0.4; 6.5; 14.5 and 22.1 mmHg, respectively (p 0.2). Conclusion In 253 patients treated with RDN, office BP fell by 22/9 mmHg. Ambulatory BP fell by 12/7 mmHg, though little response was seen in the lowermost quartile of starting blood pressure. Fall in BP was not explained by medication changes and aldosterone antagonist use did not affect response. We derive average flux corrections to the \texttt{Model} magnitudes of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) galaxies by stacking together mosaics of similar galaxies in bins of stellar mass and concentration. Extra flux is detected in the outer low surface brightness part of the galaxies, leading to corrections ranging from 0.05 to 0.32 mag for the highest stellar mass galaxies. We apply these corrections to the MPA-JHU (Max-Planck Institute for Astrophysics - John Hopkins University) stellar masses for a complete sample of half a million galaxies from the SDSS survey to derive a corrected galaxy stellar mass function at $z=0.1$ in the stellar mass range $9.5, Comment: 11 pages, 8 figures, Accepted to MNRAS

This paper provides insights for the accurate calculation of theoretical intensities of single transitions in a parahydrogen crystal containing trace amounts of orthohydrogen impurity. From the ratio of the experimental intensity to that of theoretical one ( α ˜ exp / α ˜ th ) we can deduce the value of the phonon renormalization factors, which are not easily amenable for calculations, a priori and are customarily set equal to unity. The ratio α ˜ exp / α ˜ th for S transitions varies over a wide range from 0.15 to 0.94. Different reasons are advanced for this wide variation and remedy suggested. A more careful experimental measurement of the intensity of single transitions in a parahydrogen crystal at different, carefully controlled, orthohydrogen concentrations is desirable. The accurate knowledge of the ratio α ˜ exp / α ˜ th will then lead to a detailed understanding of the theory of phonon renormalization factors in quantum solids.
