BackgroundAs the first point of contact in health care, primary care providers play an integral role in pandemic response. Despite this, primary care has been overlooked in previous pandemic plans, with a lack of emphasis on ways in which the unique characteristics of family practice could be leveraged to create a more effective response.AimTo explore family physicians’ perceptions of the integration of primary care in the COVID-19 pandemic response.Design and settingDescriptive qualitative approach examining family physician roles during the COVID-19 pandemic across four regions in Canada.MethodSemi-structured qualitative interviews were conducted with family physicians and participants were asked about their roles during each pandemic stage, as well as facilitators and barriers they experienced in performing these roles. Interviews were transcribed and a thematic analysis approach was employed to develop a unified coding template across the four regions and identify recurring themes.ResultsIn total, 68 family physicians completed interviews. Four priorities for integrating primary care in future pandemic planning were identified: 1) improve communication with family physicians; 2) prioritise community-based primary care; 3) leverage the longitudinal relationship between patients and family physicians; and 4) preserve primary care workforce capacity. Across all regions, family physicians felt that primary care was not well incorporated into the COVID-19 pandemic response.ConclusionFuture pandemic plans require greater integration of primary care to ensure the delivery of an effective and coordinated pandemic response. Strengthening pandemic preparedness requires a broader reconsideration and better understanding of the central role of primary care in health system functioning.

Background: Timely access and attachment to a primary healthcare provider is essential for population health outcomes. Patients without a family physician or nurse practitioner (“unattached”) or who cannot access their provider when needed may seek care from a community pharmacist. Community pharmacists are highly accessible in Canada and have a broad scope of practice. During the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, community pharmacists took on additional roles. However, little is known about how community pharmacists managed the needs of unattached versus attached patients before and during the COVID-19 pandemic.Aim: To explore Nova Scotian community pharmacists’ roles in caring for patients before and during the COVID-19 pandemic and identifying barriers and facilitators to optimizing patient access.Method: Semi-structured interviews with community pharmacists across the province of Nova Scotia (Canada) were conducted. Data were analyzed using framework analysis.Results: Eleven community pharmacists were interviewed. Five key themes were noted: 1) rising pressure on pharmacists to meet unique health needs; 2) what pharmacists have to offer; 3) positioning pharmacists in the system; 4) pharmacist wellbeing; and 5) recommendations for practice post-pandemic.Conclusion: Before and during the pandemic, community pharmacists played a significant and increasing role in providing care to patients, especially unattached patients. With the growing number of unattached patients, it is vital community pharmacists are supported to provide additional services to care for the health needs of patients.

BACKGROUND Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, primary care in Canada lagged behind other countries in the use of virtual care modalities. The COVID-19 pandemic incited widespread acceptance and uptake of virtual care in Canada. The use of synchronous virtual care (e.g., telephone or video modalities) was widespread and has been a valuable tool in primary care. While patients and providers have shown interest in using asynchronous modalities (e.g., messaging or email), the use of these modalities was limited compared to synchronous modalities. OBJECTIVE To evaluate the implementation and use of an asynchronous virtual care platform at two academic family medicine clinics in Nova Scotia, Canada, in 2021. METHODS This mixed-methods study utilized qualitative interview data with family physicians, family practice nurses, and administrative staff from two family medicine clinics; and administrative data, including indicators of the platform’s uptake and use. Critical incident narratives were elicited through semi-structured interviews, and these data were thematically analyzed. Descriptive analyses of administrative data from January to September 2021 were conducted to describe asynchronous care platform utilization over time and by patient characteristics. RESULTS The results of this evaluation were organized using a logic model. Interviewees identified inputs, such as technical support and training, and the importance of appropriate funding models to support the use of asynchronous care modalities, which was notably absent. Identified outputs included registration and use of the platform. Various invitation modes were used, but the most successful were individual invitations sent following conversations between the patient and provider. Most of the platform users were women and people over the age of 50, aligning with the characteristics of the highest primary care users. Most interactions on the platform were resolved within a day, but almost a quarter were resolved within 15 minutes. Short-term outcomes of using the asynchronous virtual care platform were considered across the Quadruple Aim Framework. The platform has the potential to improve population health outcomes, improve care and patient experience, improve provider satisfaction, and lower costs. CONCLUSIONS The use of virtual care has increased during the COVID-19 pandemic, and patients and providers have expressed a desire for virtual care access to remain beyond the pandemic. This evaluation identifies the necessary inputs to support the implementation of an asynchronous virtual care platform and, if well supported, asynchronous virtual care platforms have the potential to address the four quadrants of the Quadruple Aim, thereby improving the delivery of primary healthcare for patients and providers. This evaluation is formative, and the findings may be used to inform the continued uptake of asynchronous virtual care platforms within primary healthcare settings.

Introduction Health system disruptions, caused by unexpected emergencies such as disease outbreaks, natural disasters, and cybercrimes, impact the delivery of routine preventative care. As comprehensive care providers, family physicians (FPs) devote significant time to prevention. However, without emergency and pandemic plans in place in primary care, FPs face added barriers to prioritizing and sustaining preventative care when health systems are strained, which was evident during the COVID-19 pandemic. This study aims to describe FPs’ experiences providing preventative care during the COVID-19 pandemic and their perceptions of the impacts of disrupted preventative care in primary care settings. Methods Using a qualitative descriptive approach, we conducted semistructured interviews with FPs across 4 provinces in Canada (i.e. Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia, Ontario, British Columbia) between October 2020 and June 2021 as part of a larger multiple case study. These interviews broadly explored the roles and responsibilities of FPs during the COVID-19 pandemic. Interviews were coded thematically and codes from the larger study were analysed further using an iterative, phased process of thematic analysis. Results Interviews averaged 58 min in length (range 17–97 min) and FPs had a mean of 16.9 years of experience. We identified 4 major themes from interviews with FPs (n = 68): (i) lack of capacity and coordination across health systems, (ii) patient fear, (iii) impacts on patient care, and (iv) negative impacts on FPs. Physicians voiced concerns with managing patients’ prevention needs when testing availability and coordination of services was limited. Early in the pandemic, patients were also missing or postponing their own primary care appointments. Change in the provision and coordination of routine preventative care had negative impacts on both patients and physicians, affecting disease incidence/progression, physician workload, and psychological wellbeing. Conclusion During the COVID-19 pandemic, upstream care efforts were impacted, and FPs were forced to reduce their provision of preventative care. FPs contribute direct insight to primary care delivery that can support pandemic planning to ensure preventative care is sustained during future emergencies.

Purpose Strong leadership in primary care is necessary to coordinate an effective pandemic response; however, descriptions of leadership roles for family physicians are absent from previous pandemic plans. This study aims to describe the leadership roles and functions family physicians played during the COVID-19 pandemic in Canada and identify supports and barriers to formalizing these roles in future pandemic plans. Design/methodology/approach This study conducted semi-structured qualitative interviews with family physicians across four regions in Canada as part of a multiple case study. During the interviews, participants were asked about their roles during each pandemic stage and the facilitators and barriers they experienced. Interviews were transcribed and a thematic analysis approach was used to identify recurring themes. Findings Sixty-eight family physicians completed interviews. Three key functions of family physician leadership during the pandemic were identified: conveying knowledge, developing and adapting protocols for primary care practices and advocacy. Each function involved curating and synthesizing information, tailoring communications based on individual needs and building upon established relationships. Practical implications Findings demonstrate the need for future pandemic plans to incorporate formal family physician leadership appointments, as well as supports such as training, communication aides and compensation to allow family physicians to enact these key roles. Originality/value The COVID-19 pandemic presents a unique opportunity to examine the leadership roles of family physicians, which have been largely overlooked in past pandemic plans. This study’s findings highlight the importance of these roles toward delivering an effective and coordinated pandemic response with uninterrupted and safe access to primary care.

Family physicians play important roles throughout all stages of a pandemic response; however, actionable descriptions outlining these roles are absent from current pandemic plans. Using a multiple case study design, we conducted a document analysis and interviewed 68 family physicians in four Canadian regions. We identified roles performed by family physicians in five distinct stages of pandemic response: pre-pandemic, phased closure and re-opening, acute care crisis, vaccination, and pandemic recovery. In addition to adopting public health guidance to ensure continued access to primary care services, family physicians were often expected to operationalize public health roles (eg, staffing assessment centres), modulate access to secondary/tertiary services, help provide surge capacity in acute care facilities, and enhance supports and outreach to vulnerable populations. Future pandemic plans should include family physicians in planning, explicitly incorporate family physician roles, and ensure needed resources are available to allow for an effective primary care response.

BACKGROUND: Although the province of Newfoundland and Labrador has the highest rates of chronic disease in Canada, the current state of many chronic diseases in the province, including diabetes mellitus, has not been well explored. We profiled the demographic characteristics associated with, and the management of, diabetes in Newfoundland and Labrador, including any rural–urban differences. METHODS: We performed a population-based, cross-sectional analysis using data from the provincial Chronic Disease Registry for fiscal year 2015/16. Patients in the study sample were 20 years of age or older, with documented identifiers for age, sex and geographic location. We examined demographic characteristics, results of screening and diabetes clinical tests (glycated hemoglobin [HbA(1c)], low-density lipoprotein [LDL] cholesterol and urine albumin-to-creatinine ratio) and hospitalization rates. We described and compared demographic, clinical and hospitalization variables across urban and rural residents of the province. RESULTS: The study sample consisted of 66 325 individuals with diabetes in Newfoundland and Labrador (mean age 64.1 yr; 56.3% rural residents). Larger proportions of rural than urban residents with diabetes were aged 65 to 79 years (41.2% v. 37.5%), were female (50.2% v. 48.7%) and were identified as having the disease by laboratory tests only (19.6% v. 13.1%). Rural residents had worse clinical test outcomes than their urban counterparts, specifically with respect to HbA(1c) (mean and standard deviation [SD], 7.41% [SD 1.49] v. 7.26% [SD 1.50]) and LDL cholesterol (mean 2.46 [SD 0.95] v. mean 2.36 [SD 0.94] mmol/L). A total of 13.7% of individuals were admitted to hospital during the cohort year, with slightly more rural residents admitted for renal disease (standardized difference 0.021, 95% confidence interval 0.005 to 0.036). INTERPRETATION: For many individuals with diabetes in Newfoundland and Labrador, recommended targets for diabetes management are not being met, and residents in rural areas have poorer clinical outcomes. To inform the development and implementation of targeted provincial strategies for chronic disease management, further research is needed to determine how outcomes relate to the availability of primary health care services.

BackgroundPrimary care (PC) attachment improves healthcare access and prevention and management of chronic conditions. Yet, growing proportions of Canadians are unattached, signing-up on provincial waitlists. Understanding variations in healthcare utilization during COVID-19, and among potentially vulnerable unattached patients, is needed. This study compares emergency department (ED) utilization and hospitalization among those on and off a provincial PC waitlist, during the first two waves of COVID-19.MethodsWaitlist and administrative health data were linked to describe persons ever/never on the waitlist between January 1, 2017, and December 24, 2020. ED utilization and ambulatory care sensitive conditions (ACSC) hospitalization rates by current waitlist status were quantified from physician claims and hospitalization data. Relative differences during COVID-19 first and second waves were compared with the previous year.ResultsDuring the study period, 100,867 Nova Scotians (10.1%) were on the waitlist. Those on the waitlist had higher ED utilization and ACSC hospitalizations. ED utilization was higher overall for individuals ≥65 years and females; lowest during first two COVID-19 waves; and differed more by waitlist status for those InterpretationNova Scotians seeking PC attachment utilize hospital-based services more frequently than those not on the waitlist. Both groups had lower utilization during the COVID-19 pandemic than the year before. The degree to which forgone services produces downstream health burden remains to be seen.

Background COVID-19 catalyzed a rapid and substantial reorganization of primary care, accelerating the spread of existing strategies and fostering a proliferation of innovations. Access to primary care is an essential component of a health care system, particularly during a pandemic. We describe organizational innovations aiming to improve access to primary care and related contextual changes, during the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic in two Canadian provinces, Quebec and Nova Scotia.MethodsWe conducted a multiple case studies, based on 63 semi-structured interviews (n=33 in Quebec, n=30 in Nova Scotia) conducted between October 2020 and May 2021 and a review of related internal documents from both jurisdictions. We recruited a diverse range of provincial and regional stakeholders (e.g., policymakers, decision-makers, family physicians, nurses) involved in reorganizing primary care during COVID-19 using purposeful sampling (e.g., based on role, region). Interviews were transcribed verbatim and thematic analysis was conducted in NVivo12. Emerging results were discussed by team members to identify salient themes and organized into logic models.Results We identified and analyzed six organizational innovations. Four of these - centralized public online booking systems, centralized access centers for unattached patients, and interim primary care clinics for unattached patients and community connector to health and social services for older adults – pre-dated COVID-19 but were accelerated by the pandemic context. The remaining two innovations were created to specifically address pandemic-related needs: COVID-19 hotlines and COVID dedicated primary healthcare clinics. Innovation spread and proliferation was influenced by several factors such as a strengthened sense of community amongst providers, decreased patient demand at the beginning of the first wave, renewed policy and provider interest in population-wide access (versus attachment of patients only), suspended performance targets (e.g., continuity ≥80%) in Quebec, in modality of care delivery, modified fee codes, and greater regional flexibility to implement tailored innovations.Conclusion COVID-19 accelerated the uptake and creation of organizational innovations to potentially improve access to primary healthcare, removing, at least temporarily, certain longstanding barriers. Many stakeholders believed this reorganization would have positive impacts on access to primary care after COVID-19. Further studies should analyze the effectiveness and sustainability of innovations adapted, developed, and implemented during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Background Family practice nurses are Registered Nurses who work collaboratively in primary care and deliver a range of services. Professional competency statements have been developed to describe the skills and knowledge of family practice nurses as a distinct field. Purpose We conducted a secondary analysis of qualitative interview data to examine how family practice nurse roles/activities relate to recently developed professional competencies. Methods Family physicians and family practice nurses in Newfoundland and Labrador (NL) participated in semi-structured interviews, during which they discussed roles/activities and scope of practice surrounding family practice nursing. For this secondary analysis, we used competency statements to inform thematic coding of the transcribed interviews. Results For the initial study, a total of 8 participants (5 family practice nurses; 3 family physicians) were interviewed from diverse practices. All transcripts from the original study (n = 8) were included in the secondary analysis and analysed across 47 competencies encompassing 6 domains (Professionalism; Clinical Practice; Communication; Collaboration and Partnership; Quality Assurance, Evaluation and Research; Leadership). Roles/activities reported by participants were reflective of the competencies, but with substantial variation in expression. Conclusions Family practice nursing competency statements reflect the actual activities of family practice nurses in NL. The professional competencies can serve as a framework to examine contributions of family practice nurses and identify areas warranting further training. The use of competencies to explore family practice nurses’ roles and activities can assist with optimizing scope of practice.

In late January 2020, the first COVID-19 case was reported in Canada. By March 5, 2020, community spread of the virus was identified and by May 26, 2020, close to 86,000 patients had COVID-19 and 6,566 had died. As COVID-19 cases increased, provincial and territorial governments announced states of public health emergency between March 13 and 20, 2020. This paper examines Canada’s public health response to the COVID-19 pandemic during the first four months (January to May 2020) by overviewing the actions undertaken by the federal (national) and regional (provincial/territorial) governments. Canada’s jurisdictional public health structures, public health responses, technological and research endeavours, and public opinion on the pandemic measures are described. As the pandemic unravelled, the federal and provincial/territorial governments unrolled a series of stringent public health interventions and restrictions, including physical distancing and gathering size restrictions; closures of borders, schools, and non-essential businesses and services; cancellations of non-essential medical services; and limitations on visitors in hospital and long-term care facilities. In late May 2020, there was a gradual decrease in the daily numbers of new COVID-19 cases seen across most jurisdictions, which has led the provinces and territories to prepare phased re-opening. Overall, the COVID-19 pandemic in Canada and the substantial amount of formative health and policy-related data being created provide an insight on how to improve responses and better prepare for future health emergencies.

Introduction Promoting active transportation is an important public health objective. Limited research has examined the potential of interventions that highly constrain transportation and their potential impact on cycling. From November 1-7th, 2016, Philadelphia's transit workers went on strike, stopping all transit services in the city. Methods We used the strike event as a natural experiment to examine the impact of public transit strikes on use of Philadelphia's bicycle share program. We estimated the impact of the strike using two separate approaches, interrupted time series and Bayesian structural time series models. We estimated the impact of the intervention overall and stratified by membership type (members and non-members). Models controlled for the weather in Philadelphia (daily temperature and precipitation), and the rate of bicycle share use per 100,000 people in Washington, Boston, and Chicago. Results We estimate the strike caused an increase of between 86 and 92 trips per 100,000 population (57% increase in use) on average in Philadelphia during the strike period. After the strike ridership quickly returned to baseline, decreasing by 80 trips per 100,000 population after the strike. Similarly, members and non-member ridership increased by 41 and 49 trips per 100,000 population on average during the strike period and quickly returned to baseline, respectively. Conclusions Our results suggest that interventions that highly constrain transit can increase active transportation but the behavior may not be sustained after transit becomes available again.

IntroductionGiven the recurrent risk of respiratory illness-based pandemics, and the important roles family physicians play during public health emergencies, the development of pandemic plans for primary care is imperative. Existing pandemic plans in Canada, however, do not adequately incorporate family physicians’ roles and perspectives. This policy and planning oversight has become increasingly evident with the emergence of the novel coronavirus disease, COVID-19, pandemic. This study is designed to inform the development of pandemic plans for primary care through evidence from four provinces in Canada: British Columbia, Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia, and Ontario.Methods and analysisWe will employ a multiple-case study of regions in four provinces. Each case consists of a mixed methods design which comprises: (1) a chronology of family physician roles in the COVID-19 pandemic response; (2) a provincial policy analysis; and (3) qualitative interviews with family physicians. Relevant policy and guidance documents will be identified through targeted, snowball and general search strategies. Additionally, these policy documents will be analysed to identify gaps and/or emphases in existing policies and policy responses. Interviews will explore family physicians’ proposed, actual and potential roles during the pandemic, the facilitators and barriers they have encountered throughout and the influence of gender on their professional roles. Data will be thematically analysed using a content analysis framework, first at the regional level and then through cross-case analyses.Ethics and disseminationApproval for this study has been granted by the Research Ethics of British Columbia, the Health Research Ethics Board of Newfoundland and Labrador, the Nova Scotia Health Authority Research Ethics Board and the Western University Research Ethics Board. Findings will be disseminated via conferences and peer-reviewed publications. Evidence and lessons learnt will be used to develop tools for government ministries, public health units and family physicians for improved pandemic response plans for primary care.

Purpose The purpose of this study was to explore the experiences and perspectives of men who have had prostate cancer to better understand the effect of prostate cancer and associated stigmas on men in the Canadian province Newfoundland and Labrador (NL). Participants & setting Eleven men from NL who have had prostate cancer participated in semistructured interviews exploring their perspectives and experiences of prostate cancer and stigma. Methodologic approach A social-ecological framework was used to understand experiences from different domains. Interviews were analyzed using Lichtman's three Cs approach. Analysis focused on establishing themes of the participants' lived experience of prostate cancer and related stigma. Findings Participants described how emasculating a prostate cancer diagnosis can feel. They identified ways prostate cancer negatively affected their behaviors and sense of self, described coping with the diagnosis and different strategies, and talked about broader system change required to address prostate cancer stigma. Participants expressed a need for additional support from healthcare providers (HCPs). Implications for nursing HCPs, such as oncology nurses, may be able to reduce stigmatization by providing patient navigation, improving information delivery, or providing psychosocial counseling to individuals experiencing feelings of internal or external stigmatization related to prostate cancer.

Background: Newfoundland and Labrador has a rapidly aging population, much of which is rural, with poor health behaviours and high rates of chronic disease. These factors contribute to a unique challenge in health care delivery. Our aim was to describe the availability of publicly funded primary health care programs and services delivered by regional health authorities across the province. Methods: We performed a descriptive analysis using data from a cross-sectional provincial primary health care survey deployed across Newfoundland and Labrador. Survey data included location, disease-specific chronic disease prevention programming, types of routine primary care, allied health prevention and promotion, chronic disease prevention and management services, and team-based care. The mode of service delivery was identified for most programs and services. Results: Surveys were returned by 153 sites (99.4% response rate). Family physician services were available at 66% of sites (95/145) and nurse practitioner services were available at 51% (74/144) of sites. Many sites offered screening for cervical (60%, 86/144), colon (42%, 59/142) and prostate cancers (43%, 60/141), in addition to various self-management and education services. Allied health services, such as clinical nutrition counselling (47%, 68/46) and occupational therapy (46%, 68/147), were available at many sites. Available health care services were most often offered by on-site staff, and few sites provided primary health care services through telehealth. Overall, rural sites offered a greater variety of services than urban sites. Interpretation: Considerable variability exists in the range of primary health care services available across Newfoundland and Labrador, with limited delivery of some programs and services. Future research should examine how availability of programs and services affects health outcomes and costs.

OBJECTIVE The purpose of this systematic review was to examine the validity and reliability of commercial wearables in measuring step count, heart rate, and energy expenditure. METHODS We identified devices to be included in the review. Database searches were conducted in PubMed, Embase, and SPORTDiscus, and only articles published in the English language up to May 2019 were considered. Studies were excluded if they did not identify the device used and if they did not examine the validity or reliability of the device. Studies involving the general population and all special populations were included. We operationalized validity as criterion validity (as compared with other measures) and construct validity (degree to which the device is measuring what it claims). Reliability measures focused on intradevice and interdevice reliability. RESULTS We included 158 publications examining nine different commercial wearable device brands. Fitbit was by far the most studied brand. In laboratory-based settings, Fitbit, Apple Watch, and Samsung appeared to measure steps accurately. Heart rate measurement was more variable, with Apple Watch and Garmin being the most accurate and Fitbit tending toward underestimation. For energy expenditure, no brand was accurate. We also examined validity between devices within a specific brand. CONCLUSIONS Commercial wearable devices are accurate for measuring steps and heart rate in laboratory-based settings, but this varies by the manufacturer and device type. Summary ‘Physical literacy’ (PL) education—that is, teaching foundational skills, attitudes, behaviors and knowledge about lifelong involvements in physical activities, is an important aspect for health promotion among children. Universities have been playing a critical role by teaching future PL professionals. Additionally, various universities have offered university-based PL programming for neighborhood children as a way of public health promotion service and community engagement. However, this additional role of universities and the ways of promoting the quality of this type of health promotion service programming have not been investigated in the current research literature. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to identify the practicable strategies to enhance the quality of university-based PL programming for children from the perspectives of community stakeholders. Overall, 24 community stakeholders who held professional positions that are related to PL education participated in a 90-min focus group interview. This grounded theory study identified that university-based PL programming for children should be (i) inclusive, (ii) collaborative, (iii) welcoming and (iv) responsive. Practical suggestions and recommendations were also provided. This study has provided empirical knowledge to prioritize aspects for the future actions in planning and implementing university-based PL programming for children and informed for further cross-cultural comparisons amongst the perspectives of participants, university service providers and community stakeholders. The knowledge acquired from this research will also be translated to university service providers who operate similar type of health promotion service programming to the public.

To assess the quality and accuracy of cancer-related physical activity (PA) and sedentary behaviour (SB) information provided on major cancer websites from English-speaking countries.The study used a cross-sectional design.A list of major cancer websites (N = 11) was generated from countries that speak English primarily (e.g., Canada, Australia).These websites were assessed for quality and accuracy based on a detailed coding framework (e.g., PA guidelines, PA and cancer prevention). Frequencies and descriptive statistics were derived for website characteristics of interest.All sites reviewed within this study offered PA information for cancer prevention and cancer survivorship. However, while 81% of the sites presented information for SB and cancer prevention, very little information was presented for SB and cancer survivorship, with only 18.2% of the information being offered.The quality and accuracy of cancer-related PA and SB information presented on leading cancer websites is variable. Further information is warranted in the areas of SB, resistance training, and behaviour change strategies.Websites have considerable value as knowledge translation tools and, therefore, presenting evidence-based information that is easy to understand may positively impact the health and behaviours of cancer populations, as well as the general population.

In this study, we assessed the quality of publicly available cancer-related physical activity (PA) information appearing on reputable sites from Canada and other English-speaking countries. A cross-sectional Internet search was conducted on select countries (Canada, USA, Australia, New Zealand, UK) using Google to generate top 50 results per country for the keywords "'physical activity' AND 'cancer'". Top results were assessed for quality of PA information based on a coding frame. Additional searches were performed for Canadian-based sites to produce an exhaustive list. Results found that many sites offered cancer-related PA information (94.5%), but rarely defined PA (25.2%). Top 50 results from each country did not differ on any indicator examined. The exhaustive list of Canadian sites found that many sites gave information about PA for survivorship (78.3%) and prevention (70.0%), but rarely defined (6.7%) or referenced PA guidelines (28.3%). Cancer-related PA information is plentiful on the Internet but the quality needs improvement. Sites should do more than mention PA; they should provide definitions, examples and guidelines. With improvements, these websites would enable healthcare providers to effectively educate their patients about PA, and serve as a valuable resource to the general public who may be seeking cancer-related PA information.

The volume and velocity of data are growing rapidly and big data analytics are being applied to these data in many fields. Population and public health researchers may be unfamiliar with the terminology and statistical methods used in big data. This creates a barrier to the application of big data analytics. The purpose of this glossary is to define terms used in big data and big data analytics and to contextualise these terms. We define the five Vs of big data and provide definitions and distinctions for data mining, machine learning and deep learning, among other terms. We provide key distinctions between big data and statistical analysis methods applied to big data. We contextualise the glossary by providing examples where big data analysis methods have been applied to population and public health research problems and provide brief guidance on how to learn big data analysis methods.
