26. Optimal Scheduling of Periodic Gang Tasks

Abstract

The gang scheduling of parallel implicit-deadline periodic task systems upon identical multiprocessor platforms is considered. In this scheduling problem, parallel tasks use several processors simultaneously. We propose two DPFAIR (deadline partitioning) algorithms that schedule all jobs in every interval of time delimited by two subsequent deadlines. These algorithms define a static schedule pattern that is stretched at run-time in every interval of the DPFAIR schedule. The first algorithm is based on linear programming and is the first one to be proved optimal for the considered gang scheduling problem. Furthermore, it runs in polynomial time for a fixed number m of processors and an efficient implementation is fully detailed. The second algorithm is an approximation algorithm based on a fixed-priority rule that is competitive under resource augmentation analysis in order to compute an optimal schedule pattern. Precisely, its speedup factor is bounded by (2-1/m). Both algorithms are also evaluated through intensive numerical experiments.

Abstract

In working to build a better, more just future, post-secondary institutions play a crucial role in shaping the students of today and tomorrow. Many institutions already employ a number of innovative programs aimed at broadening students' horizons. We can now look forward to seeing these initiatives grow. As students, we outline our views on some of the challenges and possible avenues for change in post-secondary education. Efforts to strengthen student leadership, optimize experiential learning, and develop a more holistic educational approach are important. Current challenges to post-secondary education lie within aspects of accessibility, funding, relationship disconnect, and segregated educational approaches. Strengths and challenges encountered within post-secondary education can frame learning boundaries to be deconstructive or constructive. Both boundary modalities can play important roles in designing the future of post-secondary education in Canada.

41. Partitioned scheduling of multimode multiprocessor real-time systems with temporal isolation

Abstract

We consider the partitioned scheduling problem of multimode real-time systems upon identical multiprocessor platforms. During the execution of a multimode system, the system can change from one mode to another such that the current task set is replaced with a new one. In this paper, we consider a synchronous transition protocol in order to take into account mode-independent tasks, i.e., tasks of which the execution pattern must not be jeopardized by the mode changes. We propose two methods for handling mode changes in partitioned scheduling. The first method is offline/optimal and computes a static allocation of tasks schedulable and respecting both tasks and transition deadlines (if any). The second approach is subject to a sufficient condition in order to ensure online First Fit based allocation to satisfy the timing constraints.

Abstract

Algorithms based on semi-partitioned scheduling have been proposed as a viable alternative between the two extreme ones based on global and partitioned scheduling. In particular, allowing migration to occur only for few tasks which cannot be assigned to any individual processor, while most tasks are assigned to specific processors, considerably reduces the runtime overhead compared to global scheduling on the one hand, and improve both the schedulability and the system utilization factor compared to partitioned scheduling on the other hand. In this paper, we address the preemptive scheduling problem of hard real-time systems composed of sporadic constrained-deadline tasks upon identical multiprocessor platforms. We propose a new algorithm and a scheduling paradigm based on the concept of semi-partitioned scheduling with restricted migrations in which jobs are not allowed to migrate, but two subsequent jobs of a task can be assigned to different processors by following a periodic strategy.
