9. New Media Resistance: Barriers to Implementation of Computer Video Games in the Classroom

Abstract

Computer video games are an emerging instructional medium offering strong degrees of cognitive efficiencies for experiential learning, team building, and greater understanding of abstract concepts. As with other new media adopted for use by instructional technologists for pedagogical purposes, barriers to classroom implementation have manifested in tandem with rising interest in the medium. This paper draws upon a broad analysis of current research dealing with the educative impact of computer video games in the classroom, with a focus on these barriers to implementation. This study was a qualitative review of several scholarly papers exploring the use of computer video games in the classroom. Papers were chosen for inclusion in the review based on their focus on educational video game research. Review of the papers led to six major barriers, which are identified and summarized in this article. Barriers included negative perceptions toward video games as educational components; the difficulty of providing state of the art graphics in educational video games; a lack of adequate computing hardware in the classrooms to run advanced video games; a school day divided by short class periods which hindered long term engagement in complex games; a lack of real world affordances; and a lack of alignment to state standards. Implications for each barrier and suggestions for future research round out the findings.

Abstract

An interagency Nuclear Safety Working Group (NSPWG) was chartered to recommend nuclear safety policy, requirements, and guidelines for the Space Exploration Initiative (SEI) nuclear propulsion program. These recommendations, which are contained in this report, should facilitate the implementation of mission planning and conceptual design studies. The NSPWG has recommended a top-level policy to provide the guiding principles for the development and implementation of the SEI nuclear propulsion safety program. In addition, the NSPWG has reviewed safety issues for nuclear propulsion and recommended top-level safety requirements and guidelines to address these issues. These recommendations should be useful for the development of the program's top-level requirements for safety functions (referred to as Safety Functional Requirements). The safety requirements and guidelines address the following topics: reactor start-up, inadvertent criticality, radiological release and exposure, disposal, entry, safeguards, risk/reliability, operational safety, ground testing, and other considerations.

39. Assessing Higher Order Thinking in Video Games.

Abstract

Computer video games have become highly interesting to educators and researchers since their sophistication has improved considerably over the last decade. Studies indicate simple video games touting educational benefits are common in classrooms. However, a need for identifying truly useful games for educational purposes exists. This article begins with an examination of lower level learning in so-called edutainment products and concludes with an example of an advanced social studies simulation that fosters higher order thinking. The article identifies characteristics of highly cognitive virtual interactive environments and offers a detailed index and scoring rubric as a tool for teachers and preservice teachers to use when evaluating the tendencies a video game demonstrates toward encouraging higher order thinking in its participants. 41. Night Time Shape Recognition of Reflectorized Warning Plates as a Function of Full Reflectorization, Borders Only Reflectorization and Target Brightness

Abstract

A study, using 11 subjects sitting in a stationary car on an unused airport runway with low beams on, was conducted to determine the distance at which a shape coded, white, reflectorized warning plate can be recognized at night as a function of the amount of reflectorization (either fully reflectorized or borders only reflectorized) and as a function of target brightness. Recognition distances were recorded for a balanced and randomized combination of 30 experimental conditions consisting of 3 different specific intensity levels of target brightness (high, prismatic sheeting material, 1080 cd/fc/sg ft at .2 degree observation angle and −4 degrees entrance angle; medium, encapsulated lens, 305 cd/fc/sq ft; and low, embedded or enclosed lens, 105 cd/fc/sq ft), 5 different target shapes of equal area (18 square inches, rectangle, square, triangle, circle and octagon), and two different types of reflectorization (targets that were fully reflectorized and targets that had only 4.25 square inches along their borders reflectorized). A car heading of −3 degrees to the left was used for the experiment to maximize target illumination. The results indicate that increasing target brightness had either no effect or only a small detrimental effect on correct target recognition distances for both the full reflectorization and borders only reflectorization, and that the triangle (the object with the fewest and longest sides) was recognized at the largest distance and with the fewest errors for both the full reflectorization and borders only reflectorization. The embedded or enclosed lens sheeting material transmitted the most information and produced the highest percentage of correct responses. Targets with the borders only reflectorized were also recognized further away than the fully reflectorized targets (15% futher for 23.6% reflectorization). Implications of these results for the design of shape coded reflectorized warning plates for night use for both traffic and industrial settings are discussed.

Abstract

The feasibility of using the numerical method of finite elements for digital computer determinations of Green's functions was investigated in this thesis. A study of Poisson's equation, the Helmholtz equation, and the diffusion equation in one and two dimensions was conducted using the CDC 6600 computer. Both Dirichlet and mixed boundary conditions were considered. The Green's functions numerically determined by the finite element method were compared with those found by the analytical method and the finite difference method for accuracy. The numerical and analytical Green's functions were also used in the solution of several boundary value problems, and the accuracy of the results were compared. The results of the study indicated that although for Poisson's equation, the finite element method produced the same results as the finite difference method, the finite element method was more time consuming. For the Helmholtz and diffusion equations, the finite element method again required more computations, but in most cases gave greater accuracy.

Abstract

Educational video games have proven a useful tool for educators, offering experiential pedagogy in a variety of fields. Predicting the success of a video game in engaging students and motivating them to work with relevant material is problematic. One approach was attempted through administering the Myers-Briggs Personality Type Indicator to 42 high school students and observing subsequent voluntary performance on a popular mathematics video game throughout one semester. Game dynamics matching certain personality elements of the students generally correlated between learning preferences in the classroom and in the online gaming environment. Students who enjoyed group dynamics in classroom settings likewise indicated enthusiasm for the group dynamics in game play. Those students preferring structured learning environments may prefer less open ended virtual learning gaming environments. Since the game incorporated multiple choice questions and rewarded correct choices made quickly, those students with personality styles in which questions are carefully considered before answering suffered in points scored compared to those used to making fast intuitive choices in exam settings. Additional studies, including those with larger populations and different types of video games, are needed for more definite conclusions.

Abstract

Sedimentary rocks at Eagle crater in Meridiani Planum are composed of fine-grained siliciclastic materials derived from weathering of basaltic rocks, sulfate minerals (including magnesium sulfate and jarosite) that constitute several tens of percent of the rock by weight, and hematite. Cross-stratification observed in rock outcrops indicates eolian and aqueous transport. Diagenetic features include hematite-rich concretions and crystal-mold vugs. We interpret the rocks to be a mixture of chemical and siliciciastic sediments with a complex diagenetic history. The environmental conditions that they record include episodic inundation by shallow surface water, evaporation, and desiccation. The geologic record at Meridiani Planum suggests that conditions were suitable for biological activity for a period of time in martian history., Organismic and Evolutionary Biology
